Admit it - you were wrong....Send Steve Jobs a bottle of Champagne.

Ten years ago this month, Michael Dell said Steve Jobs should ```shut down'' Apple Inc. and return the money to shareholders.Dell then had a market value of $4 billion to Apple's $700 million. Apple's valuation has since soared to $150 billion, more than double that of its rival. Last month, Apple passed PC leader Hewlett-Packard Co. in market capitalization for the first time.
How the winds of success are fleeting.
Admit it - You were wrong.
Send Steve Jobs a bottle of Champagne.

Linux Drivers for All Dell Devices
Linux, Monitors and Displays submitted by grifter
10/24/07 **REVIEWED**
If Dell truly wishes to promote their Ubuntu line of computers then they should make sure that all of their devices work properly with the OS. For instance, the SP2008WFP monitor, while it does display everything fine, does not have drives for Linux systems of any kind. This is most certainly a hamper for any Ubuntu users to want to buy a Dell peripheral.

Put Ubuntu on a laptop with better specs
Inspiron products, Linux submitted by piratehead
10/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Offer an Ubuntu laptop (Inspirion or otherwise) with available discreet graphics, discreet audio, 8GB or more of RAM, a quad-core processor, bluetooth, next-gen WiFi, and integrated webcam.
I don't know how many of those are possible at this point, but each one is a step forward for people who are waiting on certain specs to bite on a Dell laptop.
Now that you offer laptops with Ubuntu on them, I really don't want to go to another company just to get the computer specs I want. I wish to vote for Dell with my dollars, paying for a laptop that has actually been tested and certified by the manufacturer to run Ubuntu. Please give me the opportunity!
Check out the Idea in Action to find out more about our Ubuntu offerings.

Linux Hardware Compatibility List
Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by s3indiana
02/20/07 **IN PROGRESS**
Create a listing of Dell hardware that's compatible with the major Linux distributions (Fedora, OpenSuse, ubuntu, Freespire) providing compatibility with not just systems (desktops and laptops) but include peripherals (printers, camera's, flash drives, compatible routers, etc.). Include levels of compatibility so the reviewer can make an educated choice. This would provide the greatest assistance for those looking at alternatives... We're working to add something like this to our linux.dell.com wiki. Click here to see what john_h has to say.

Laptop & Desktop Boot in seconds from Flash Drives
Broadband and Mobility, Desktops and Laptops submitted by reg
02/19/07
Have laptops and PCs that boot quickly & quietly from fast internal flash drives, and run the whole OS and application programs in RAM. The New Dell PC will boot from internal Fast USB 2.0 flash drives in just a few seconds. The Hard drive can stay powered down, completely off, unless the user needs to store some extra large files (video, photos).
Laptop Battery life is measured in days, not hours.
Have 2 Recessed USB 2.0 Slots. Two USB Flash Drives would fit neatly into the laptop. In this way the whole OS and Apps run in RAM, and stores data files on an 8 GB flash drive.
The 8GB is used transparently as the 'On Line' Storage, with a hard drive acting as secondary storage. This gives desktops and laptops much greater speed and power savings.
<font> On-Line/Near-Line Storage Model for Laptops</font> 1. OS and App all run from RAM (so the machine should have 2GB+ of RAM) 2. Modified files are worked on in RAM, and stored on the Flash Drive 3. Older (non-system) files, that are 'inactive', get pushed down to the hard drive,
Hard Drive files are stored with on-the-fly hardware compression / decompression (back to RAM), with the flash drive file replaced with a pointer to the hard drive file. Data is always safely copied down to the hard drive on shut down.
The flash drive is removeable and upgradeable, so later if someone wants to upgrade to a 32GB flash drive, just unplug and plug in the new one.
On-line / Near-Line storage works great on very large data servers, where data is mostly write once, read infrequently. (Also known as Write Once, Read Mostly - WORM drives.)
It's time such ideas are put into practice for desktops and laptops.
You can run your Dell Laptop TODAY from 100% Flash Drive - Pen Drive using Puppy Linux.
www.puppylinux.org delivers a complete, small, fast Linux Distribution including all major tools in under 90MB. You can add Open Office, GIMP, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc and they all fit right in a USB Flash Drive. Pupply Linux Applications. Download Puppy Linux so you Can Try Flash Drive Dell Notebooks Today.

Advertise transfer rates in megabytes (MBps), not megabits (Mbps)

The transfer rate of the selected wireless card is 54 Mbps, or megabits per second. A megabit is a thousand bits, and a bit is a 1 or a 0. So Dell thinks that 54 thousand 1's and 0's are useful to me?
Advertise transfer rates in megabytes (MBps with an uppercase B), not megabits (Mbps with a lowercase B). A byte can be a character of a document or a web page, part of a picture, or something else. In any case, 1 MBps (one thousand bytes per second, or a megabyte per second) is much more useful to me. Besides, web pages, pictures and other files are measured in bytes/kilobytes/megabytes/etc., why not transfer rates?
Many people think that the transfer rate is in megabytes, only to find out later that the wireless card is transferring megabits. Please stop advertising in such a useless unit as megabits, and start advertising in more useful units, like megabytes! Besides, Dell is asking for ideas concerning wireless after all.

Dell; PROMOTE Linux and OSS in Education
Advertising and Marketing, Education, Linux submitted by phubert
09/24/07
* Learning Linux and _using_ OSS in education at all levels (primary, middle school, secondary, college and university, trades) will provide BETTER, FOUNDATIONAL education than the proprietary alternatives (Windows and Apple OS). * In addition this will result in significant cost savings for schools. * My original idea was _merged_ with one that did _not_ address these points!

Increase production of ubuntu computers
Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by howlingmadhowie
09/26/07
So i was on the german dell site just now and had a go at configuring a dell notebook with ubuntu. as we know, they are difficult to find and hidden away behind vast tracts on "buy windows instead!" and "linux will eat your cat!" notices.
anyway, when i did get to configure it, i read on the right hand side this:
Auf Grund einer noch nie dagewesenen Nachfrage bedauern wir Ihnen mitteilen zu müssen, dass Ihre Bestellung für dieses System eine Lieferzeit von ca. 4 Wochen in Anspruch nehmen kann. Wir entschuldigen uns für die Unanehmlichkeiten.
or, in english:
due to unprecedented demand, we are sorry to inform you that delivery for this system can take up to 4 weeks. we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
okay, dell computers, what are you waiting for? crank up production!

...to teach the competition what mistakes not to make.
:)
(semi)seriously, if the competition is smart enough to read here, it could improve the whole PC industry, especially if they notice what we think about bloatware.
For that matter, I suspect that the IdeaStorm "storm" about forcing Vista down our throats helped persuade M$oft to extend the XP cutoff date, so maybe we have already made the world a better place for non-Dell customers.

1815dn - Vista support for Netscan utility
Operating Systems, Printers and Ink submitted by aetherscape
10/02/07
Please update your network scan utility for the 1815dn to support the Vista OS.
Currently the NetScan utility (i.e. ability to scan documents from your computer over a network) that comes with the 1815dn does not support Vista. This is a key function for an all-in-one printer unit and one of the reasons I purchased the 1815dn to begin with.
Vista was released back in March 2007 and I have waited patiently for the update that would fix this incompatibility. Half a year later I am still waiting.
Please fix this functionality.

IdeaStorm feature: Allow us to browse based on the Dell-assigned tags
IdeaStorm submitted by cosh
05/18/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Dell assign "status tags" to some of the popular/notable ideas on this website, but they are tiny little things under the title of each idea, and there is no way to search or browse by them.
If we had a page on IdeaStorm so we could see ideas based on each status tag it will let everybody see what effect IdeaStorm is having, in addition to the few ideas mentioned under "Ideas in Action". It might also reduce the number of duplicates for very popular ideas, if people can see what Dell has already acknowledged.
The status tags being used at the moment are as follows:
- Acknowledged - Already Offered - Coming Soon - Fixed - Implemented - In Progress - Not Likely - Not Now - Under Review (formerly, Under Consideration) - Partially Implemented
You can see a sample of how this works on my categorizer web site, here. Some of the information may be out of date, but it works for most purposes.
Status tag links have been launched.

Dell: Note the positive PR your Ubuntu stuff gets you - front page NY Times Online article on Ubuntu/Dell
Linux submitted by jmxz
10/04/07
This Dell/Ubuntu article made the NYTimes Online front page.
The New York Times The Next Leap for Linux Published: October 4, 2007
Dell is testing the waters with a Linux-equipped notebook computer, in a challenge to Microsoft and Apple. ... Until recently, major PC makers shied away from Linux. Now the industry is watching as Dell is selling two Linux-equipped desktop models ...and a ...notebook PC. (Hewlett-Packard offers Linux systems to businesses, and Lenovo, the Chinese company that bought I.B.M.’s PC division, sells Linux machines in China and says it will soon offer Linux-based computers in the United States.) ... Now if only Dell would offer it on some more desirable systems (looking for a quad-core desktop now); and price it competitively internationally (where they still charge a few hundred dollar premium), this Linux effort might have a chance of working. The Idea is that Dell should take note of the positive PR and continue the PR efforts around it. Ubuntu+Dell is a newsworthy topic of interest to the mainstream media today.
