Make a dedicated '@' key on keyboards.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by badblood 10/09/07

Most keyboards I've worked on have the '@' symbol merged with the number 2 key. We all use @ a lot these days and I kind of think it's time that it was given its own key, or at least was in a more convenient location - closer to the shift key. The keyboard I am typing on now has two ridiculous 'windows' keys. What a waste. Why not make one of them an '@' key. At least then I'd press it now and again.

I also think the brackets should be swapped with the parenthesis, which are used a lot more....

Anywho......... 27 Comments »

Refresh the ideas/points count

IdeaStorm submitted by badblood 10/15/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

There seems to be a very big difference between the number of ideas and points shown for different users of ideastorm and the actual number - the one you get if you count the ideas manually.

It might be good idea to refresh the count, however it is that you do that....

Please don't delete this idea. Thanks
Personal points for IdeaStorm users have been refreshed. Click here for more details.

Turn your most powerful laptop into a desktop

New Product Ideas submitted by badblood 10/18/07

Why not remove the keyboard and screen from your most powerful laptop and turn it into a desktop?

Jazz it up a little with shiny paint, in different colors, add a wireless keyboard and matching monitor and mouse.

There you have it a beautiful, functional slim form factor desktop computer. 9 Comments »

Admit it - you were wrong....Send Steve Jobs a bottle of Champagne.

Service and Support submitted by badblood 10/22/07

Ten years ago this month, Michael Dell said Steve Jobs should ```shut down'' Apple Inc. and return the money to shareholders.Dell then had a market value of $4 billion to Apple's $700 million. Apple's valuation has since soared to $150 billion, more than double that of its rival. Last month, Apple passed PC leader Hewlett-Packard Co. in market capitalization for the first time.

How the winds of success are fleeting.

Admit it - You were wrong.

Send Steve Jobs a bottle of Champagne.

Stop describing computers as 'solutions'

Advertising and Marketing submitted by badblood 10/25/07

I've never understood why computers and software are described as 'solutions'. On dell.com there is a little box with links that says:

'Solutions for: home and office, small and medium business, etc'

'Solutions' are by definition methods for solving problems.....as well as mixtures of ingredients...

So I am reading that little box and trying to figure out a) why dell thinks I have problems to be solved; b) how does Dell know what my problems are anyway and c) what would make Dell think that a computer might be a solution to my problems which are mostly psychological and emotional anyway?

Anywho, mostly I use computers not because I have a problem but because they help me do things or learn things, because I have no choice at work, or because they are entertaining.

So stop calling them 'solutions'. Think of something else, something a little more positive, that reflects why most people use computers.....

Thanks. 10 Comments »

Make the choice of Browser Optional or make it Firefox or Opera

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by badblood 10/26/07

Let us choose our default browser:

Or make Firefox or Opera the default browser, because they are better than Internet Explorer.

Please stop forcing us to use sub-standard software

I know this is a duplicate, but it is one of the most popular ideas and has been under review for such a long time that I wanted to put it up again.

I don't know about you, but waiting for an answer to this idea is getting annoying.

Get with the program salesfarce.com

Dell Web Site submitted by badblood 10/26/07

Ideastorm is a great idea, hampered by poor software. This site is so buggy as to be unusable half the time. New bugs have just sprung up today that prevent you from editing your comments. Users all over lost points last night for no apparent reason.

Cosh, an ideastorm user, has developed a better version of this software. If he can do it during lunch breaks, why can't salesforce.com manage it with all their millions of buck and staff. Are you staffed by Windows Vista developers or what?

Salesforce.com what's up. Get with the program!

Oh the idea....
Ring up salesforce.com and tell them that their software is rubbish, that ideastorm users are tired of working as volunteer test rodents, and that they should spend some of their millions and fix this software!

Put a button on laptops to turn off the monitor

Laptops submitted by badblood 10/26/07

Put a little button or switch on laptops to turn off the monitor whenever you want.

Think about one to turn off the processor too, or even boost it.

Eject button for hard drives

Desktops submitted by badblood 10/26/07

Put a little button on desktop computers to eject the hard drive out the front of the computer. I reckon this would be handy in case of a house fire.

The little panic button could be used to erase everything in case of a raid.

You might want to put the buttons under a little cover so that you don't accidentally erase everything or eject the hard drive in the middle of a game.

The buttons could be on the case or on the keyboard, as you like.

All hardware should be optional

Dell submitted by badblood 10/30/07

Ever stop to think when you decide to buy a new computer that there are parts on your old computer that still work and meet operational standards. Who has replaced a laptop with busted or outdated processor that still has a good screen or a good CD ROM.

Make all hardware components optional when configuring a new computer so we can keep old components that still work, like power supplies, screens, processors, modems, hard drives, etc. 12 Comments »

Support Space Ship One

Dell submitted by badblood 10/31/07

Scaled Composites SpaceShipOne completed the first privately funded human spaceflight on June 21, 2004. SpaceShipOne was developed by Scaled Composites, Burt Rutan's aviation company, without government funding. On October 4, it won the $10-million Ansari X PRIZE, by reaching 100 kilometers in altitude twice in a two-week period with the equivalent of three people on board, with no more than ten percent of the non-fuel weight of the spacecraft replaced between flights. Development costs were estimated to be $25-million, funded completely by Paul Allen.

Developing the capability to escape the boundaries of our home planet is one of mankind’s most spectacular achievements and has enormous potential significance to the future of the human race. Already, our limited exploration of space has changed the way we live and think, from instant global communications to a better understanding of climate change. Space travel to date though has come at enormous expense, not just in financial terms but in its environmental impact and the personal safety of those involved.

Dell should recognise that private sector innovation is often the key to radical improvement. Dell needs to improve its history of promoting and investing in breakthrough technologies.

Dell should acknowledge that it is in mankind’s interest to develop our knowledge and understanding as well as our access to space. For this reason Dell should undertake to support the development and commercialization of this completely new approach to manned space travel - made possible by Burt Rutan and SpaceShipOne. In doing so, Dell will enable many thousands of people across the world to experience space for themselves and help to unlock the potential benefits that will come from safe and affordable manned space access.

Add a little lamp to laptops

submitted by badblood 11/11/07

Lenovo has added a little lamp to their laptop keyboards. The ThinkLight keyboard light allows you to work in low-light conditions. Located on the top edge of the display, this tiny LED illuminates your keyboard to let you keep working. ThinkPad notebooks are the only notebook family with the ThinkLight keyboard light.

This is a really nice feature and doesn't drain the battery and helps you type in the dark. 6 Comments »

When is a 'duplicate' idea a 'repeat' idea

IdeaStorm submitted by badblood 11/13/07

Let's face it there are billions of duplicate ideas on this website, leading to clutter and misplaced votes. They annoy us, bore us and distract us.

But lets agree that some ideas that appear again are not in fact duplicates they are repeats of an older good idea. Why do we repeat ideas? Because after some time all ideas get lost and are difficult to find, new people don't see them. Others Dell have said they would do something about but have sat on, thinking that we might not notice. In both cases some ideas are worth repeating as part of our advocacy efforts.

So when is a 'duplicate' a repeat idea? When we intentionally post the same idea for advocacy purposes. When we note and admit that it is the same as an older idea.

Leave repeat ideas alone. Do not merge repeat ideas. Do not delete repeat ideas.

Thanks. 21 Comments »
