Allow Anti-Virus as Optional

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by rgb66rgb 09/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Some purchasers already have subscriptions to anti-virus products that can be ported to new systems. Not having a 'no anti-virus' option on every system order page forces those users to essentially buy two licenses when only one machine will be used.

Bloatware on Separate CD

Software submitted by rgb66rgb 09/20/07

Rather than load trial or other software outside the basic operating system, provide all software that manufacturers pay you to preinstall on a separate CD with every system. This way a user wanting to trial Office 2007, or install MS Works or any other offer can do so at any time by running the software CD.

This will significantly reduce the amount of time user's need to spend uninstalling trial versions, enhancing the overall Dell experience. This could be a win-win proposition for all. 8 Comments »

Uniform and Expanded Hardware Options

Sales Strategies submitted by rgb66rgb 09/20/07

One of the most frustrating things in configuring potential systems is discovering the hard drive or video card or other component I want is not offered under a particular model. Why do some systems offer the multi-card reader with bluetooth option, and others don't (when both use the same operating system).

While limiting product selection of components such as drives and graphic cards may benefit seen as a benefit by those who prefer to let Dell do the thinking for them in product selection, I know of many, many others that would welcome the ability to toggle a button to see a full and complete offering of all hardware options that could be added to any system. Direct2Dell Clutter

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by rgb66rgb 09/20/07

You *really* have to clean up the number of times an article is posted. It's one thing to post a story on the welcome page and under the category it relates to, but repeating the same story multiple times wastes reader's time and ultimately results in frustration with the site.

For example, the second front page story today is "Dell to Open Retail Store in Russia". This story is also the lead story on the Consumer, Customer Experience, Dell 2.0, Products, Servers, Small Business, Solution Providers, and Strategy categories! Surely if an item doesn't fit a specific category, a new one - such as "Dell Stores" - could be created? I'm sure you will have future stories that could fit that topic.

Another recent example is the XPS motherboard replacement program. Almost every category contained pages of information on the program's status and eventually how to apply, when a specific XPS exchange category had been created just for this topic!

Overall, the result of multi-posting articles diminishes any good intentions Dell may have originally had on providing meaningful communications with end users through this site. 1 Comment »

Dell Offer a Refund on the XPS 700 Fiasco!

Sales Strategies, Service and Support, XPS products submitted by jorge 09/20/07

Dell offer to give the shafted customers of that XPS 700 system that has a never ending problem to get replaced. It has been a nightmare for both Dell and especially the customers who got shafted with a defective system.

Dell just offer those shafted customers a refund and let them rest in peace! Imagine the customers that spent that amount of money only to have a paperweight instead of a computer. I'm just glad I was not one of those customers because I'd of thrown it through the nearest Dell store window. 9 Comments »

Nipple on desktop keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by badblood 09/20/07

Here I am typing away on my desktop and getting very tired of moving my hand from the keyboard to the mouse, from the mouse to the keyboard, blah, blah, blah, blaaaaah.

It would be nice if you could add a nipple or track point thingy to desktop keyboards. Much more convenient....

Thanks 9 Comments »

Roster of Volunteers

IdeaStorm, Service and Support submitted by badblood 09/20/07

Ideastorm users are Dell volunteers - volunteering their time to contribute ideas and experiences to Dell. What we get in return is a sense of satisfaction that we are participating and contributing.

This participation should be formally acknowledged by Dell.

Establish a roster of volunteers. Formalize the structure.

There are very few private companies with so very many volunteers.

It is an opportunity not to be missed. 2 Comments »

Stop the deceptive advertising

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 09/20/07

Dell (along with other companies) likes to advertise low priced computers that then need upgrades to make them what most people would consider usable. In the process Dell makes people pay unreasonable upgrade costs to increase their profit margin.

With all the number jumbling Dell cannot keep its own website pricing in line with print ad pricing and this is where you can see just how badly people are getting ripped off.

Here is an image of the price and specs of the current $499 notebook offer on the Dell web site.

This image is of the current print add $499 notebook when upgrades are added to make it the same computer as the online offer.

So if an unassuming person calls in or uses the print ad's "value code" they get less computer for the same money. I could go on all day showing how Dell charges unreasonable upgrade costs.

Here is an article I found online about the same topic. http://www.seacoastonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070920/BIZ/709200379 25 Comments »

Latitude ATG tablet

Broadband and Mobility, Latitude products submitted by jervis961 09/20/07

Dell needs to design an ATG tablet. The tablet could be marketed to emergency workers, military and others who need a reliable system in the field or in their vehicle that can stand up to the constant abuse. The tablet touch screen would interface with programs already in the industry and help improve documentation and accountability that is currently done on a clipboard. The swivel screen would also enable a passenger or driver to easily view the screen as needed. Commercials of Emergency workers using the ATG in the field are also a great way to improve the image of Dell by showing the sturdiness of their products. Comment »

Desktop using AMD Triple Core Phenom processor

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by jervis961 09/20/07

http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=6334

AMD is coming out with a triple core processor in early 2008. Dell should use them in desktops as they should still be cheaper than an Intel Dual core and have more power. 16 Comments »

Sell the option for licenced codecs with ubuntu systems

Sales Strategies submitted by sheol 09/20/07

It would be great to have all the major media for4mats preinstalled on an Ubuntu OS. I'm sure people would happily pay money to not have to worry about these sorts of problems. Contact Apple and MicroSoft nd ask thm to allow users to buy a codec bundle on their preinstalled Ubuntu computer. 6 Comments »

Time to bring out the QUAD-CORE processors...!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by michaelyork29 09/20/07

Dell,

I think its about time you bring in the new quad-core processors from Intel (and maybe AMD when they come out with them) as an option on some of the new desktops and possibly laptops. People who multi-task on their computer of use a lot of CPU power need these processors and by doing this you'll also be one of the few companies now putting these processors in consumer desktops which would give you an advantage to the "others."

Allow Major Customers to Re-Badge the Name Tag; Make Computers Look to be part of the Buyers Company.

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies, Simplify IT submitted by jorge 09/19/07

Dell offer to re-badge computers for your major customers who buy a ton of computers so they are named after the buyers company with a Dell reference included as well. For example: (only examples don't go postal on me)

McDonalds Inspiron 2000 by Dell (small type on the "by Dell")
or
GreenPeace Precision Workstation 520 by Dell

This allows large corporations/organizations to have computers tagged as being their property in a more obvious way for not only name recognition by those visiting/using but for security reasons as well (theft) and leaving the "by Dell" ending give you that signature at the end. Look you're already painting computers those awful colors so re-branding the front of computers should take more than a sticker or etch change, depending on the model.

Great marketing angle. 4 Comments »

Business class Linux notebooks with large screens.

Linux, Monitors and Displays, Small Business submitted by nategoose 09/19/07

I check the dell.com/open everyday looking for the day when you have a higher end Linux notebook. Bigger screen and possibly 2 hard drive bays. Maybe a docking station, but not necessary. 1 Comment »

Smaller Form Factor

Desktops submitted by bnkr327 09/19/07

Guys,
I have 4 Dell Desktops, 3 Dell Laptops Needless to say, I like Dell.

I Enjoy that Dell wants to hear what the public wants and is not trying the "This is what they are going to buy" approach.

How about a different form factor?
a Simple 2 box setup:
One Box for the Motherboard and two optical drives
With dual Monitor support and optional - built in Wireless Keyboard and Mouse.
(Also, How about a monitor that I can plug my KB and Mouse into?)

The Second Box a Raid 5 (or Raid 6) E-Sata Setup (Hot Swapable).

Each box not to exceed 12" cubed (I am looking at some cube shaped bookshelving units and think it would be great if I could put my system in two cubes of space.

This Saves me Desk Space, and could solve some of my ugly cable issues. 2 Comments »

Provide French toll-free phone numbers (or better publish them if they already exist)

Service and Support submitted by jmxz 09/19/07

Provide French toll-free phone numbers (or better publish them if they already exist) so your French customers and intending-to-be-customers can get the help they need.

In the comments of another IdeaStorm thread IdeaStorm user a3_nm who is trying to buy a Dell computer writes

Apparently, there are no toll-free phone numbers for the French website, but I'm connected right now with a Dell technician on Live Chat. I'll give you more infos soon.

When I ordered my last Dell, your 1-800 (US toll free) numbers were very valuable -- for reasons including that your phone support people could see different options on the E1505N than were visible on your public web site.

Make such a resource available to your European users too - or else you're losing people who really want to become Dell customers. Comment »
