Linux or BSD alternative to "Windows Home Server"

Operating Systems submitted by homer 02/21/07

Dell already offers Business server products, but I think the time has come to accept that many home consumers also use servers (albeit of a smaller and cheaper variety). Microsoft certainly seem to agree with that conclusion, which is why they are developing their Home Server product.

Linux and BSDs are the De Facto server operating systems, and a typical Linux server setup can offer an order of magnitude more services than what is being proposed in Windows Home Server ... but without the cost, and with all the traditional benefits that Linux brings, like better security, stability, efficiency, and control.

I propose that Dell offer SFF (small form factor) Linux and/or BSD servers for non-business customers, and also standard form factor servers for those who want them, but with an emphasis on low-power consumption, so-called "quiet computing", and general headless use (no KVM).

An example of a very easy to set up server product, is

http://www.freenas.org/< featured in a review on

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rlC61qipiM< the emphasis of FreeNAS is obviously file storage, but I'd prefer to see a home server more oriented to all-in-one service provision.

As an example, one of my home servers offers the following services to all the workstations on my network:

bind DNS
DHCP
OpenSSH
Denyhosts (SSH hack protection + auto-reporting)
Dovecot IMAP
Postfix MTA
SpamAssassin (with Spamhaus + SpamCop RBLs)
Leafnode NNTP
Yam (Yum server)
RSS (local feed from Yam)
Apache
Squid
Privoxy
AWStats
IPTables (FireStarter)
PXE network boot (FC6 busybox + install script)
NFS
CIFS (Samba)
CUPS print server
Rsync (backup for all connected workstations)
Mondo (bare metal self-backup, i.e. disaster recovery)
BitTorrent Server + Tracker (Hosting FC5 and others)
GiFT P2P server + index node (hosting custom RPMs)
VNC server (Fluxbox)
MythTV server node (1 of 4)
Cinelerra render node (1 of 8)

The Yam server is particularly useful, since it facilitates updating the software (a la automatic updates) across the whole network. I.e. download once, deploy many times, thus saving a lot of bandwidth.

Now I wouldn't expect a Dell Linux Home Server to go as far as I have with the above services, but it's just a flavour of what's possible.

I should also add, that the server in question is a mere 533Mhz machine, with just 512MB of memory, yet it works transparently with no visible speed issues, or issues of any kind whatsoever, so that'll give you some idea of how efficient Linux is as a server OS, and how reliable.

Please vote for this idea. A pre-built, pre-installed, Linux home server is definitely the way forward, in this rapidly emerging market space. 10 Comments »

Printers with cheap refillable ink

Printers and Ink, Sales Strategies submitted by compujterguy 03/06/07

Two years ago, I wrote to then CEO Kevin Rollins suggesting Dell actually do some R&D and come out with new printers that have refillable ink containers, something on the order of a product called Niagra II. The case for more expensive printers but much cheaper ink has recently be realized...by Kodak - See Wall Street Journal article from Feb. 6, 2007. This could have been, and possibly still can be an option for Dell.

It would do Dell some good to actually do some R&D with the products they sell instead of just trying to sell good quality, generic Intel (and now AMD) boxes. 1 Comment »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Stop using Microsoft and Intel as crutches

Dell submitted by ronsemail 02/17/07

Try innovating without Microsoft or Intel as your R&D lab. Go hire and staff a kick butt set of designers and engineers and pay them the better than anyone else. In fact pay all of your staff better than anyone else, in 3 years you will be the best brand in the business. Try spending some of your customers money on product development instead of putting it your bank account. 4 Comments »

Smartphone

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by gautam 02/16/07

The Dell Axim PDA is not super-popular, but I think if it moved into the SmartPhone realm (especially in order to compete with upcoming iPhone) then it could pick up some market-share and be a great device for US cell phone providers. 92 Comments »

Fix your chat wait times. 20 minutes is unacceptable!

Service and Support submitted by baylor921 02/16/07 **REVIEWED**

For an internet company, your organization acts like it just entered the online market. Chatting with agents is the way of the future and waiting 20 minutes for a rep is terrible service. Especially for people who have an XPS or a $5000 workstation model.

I've gotten much quicker service at other internet businesses.

Thanks for the allowing my input.

We are committed to handling chat requests in a timely manner. Most times of the day, a customer should be greeted by an agent within one minute.

Don't make us buy Vista

Operating Systems submitted by icantseeyou 02/21/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

From all of the press I have read it is plain that Vista is a big bomb. To buy the cheapest version I hear it isn't even as good as XP SP2. At the same time you need at least 4 Gig to run it. Offer other options... I don't care if it's Linux, XP, or a rat running on a wheel. Don't make us buy Vista.

You can read more about this the OS options Dell offers here.

Would be Nice to Get the New Hybrid Hard Drives As Soon As Possible

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by guest_houston 02/17/07

Sometime this year some hard disk makers are to release "hybrid hard drive" technology, which is supported by the new Windows Vista.

This technology could possibly provide greater speed and energy savings, as well as making the computer quieter.

I can't wait for this to become available. 4 Comments »

Better looking PCs

Desktops and Laptops submitted by shanx24 02/17/07

If Dell wants to regain relevance with its target audience, it should seriously hire a couple of leading designers and make machines that don't look like poor man's tin clunkers. Yes, even that 'luxury' line of machines you've started look hideous. Take inspiration from Vaio SZ or the small full-black Fujitsu or just about anything from Apple. I used to be an avid Dell evangelist for nearly 5 years, until it became to make less and less sense to me (even your 'international support' was useless. It does NOT work). 3 Comments »

Linux + Beryl

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by oposit 02/21/07

I think dell computers with Linux or without OS is a good idea, but the potential for a hit resides in Linux with Beryl. Dell executives cold miss a great oportunity if they didn't realize the sales that can be made only on Beryl eyecandy (or enhanced productivity, if you are business minded).

Just look at it and surely you say "I want this in my computer"

Don't take my word about it. Better watch

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yw78IIEbzHs<

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYWaEJmpa5M<

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNb7gPA1JFk<

I know this is going to sound horrible, but I'm really convinced that is "Beryl nice".

People who knows linux will buy the dell computers if they had installed for the sake of security, stability, lower cost of software. People that doesn't knows linux will buy dell computers for Beryl, and get the security, stability and others advantages of linux as a bonus. 11 Comments »

BloatWare Uninstall- single click software remove

Software submitted by raymc 02/19/07

I understand the importance to Dell of the additional revenue stream collected from the suppliers of 'free' bundled software. So to shift the decision making process onto the customer, can Dell make the removal of such bundled software a single click choice 'remove bloatware' on first power-up of new products? Ergo Revenue stream retained and customer choice satisfied! 6 Comments »

Lighter laptops - some suggestions

Laptops submitted by amri64 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Would like to see more laptops below 2kg (4.4lbs).

Suggestions:

1. Replace Hard Disk with solid state storage device. Advantage: 1) lighter 2)no moving parts means less probability of breaking down (esp due to wear & tear)

2. External DVD drives. On the road, most things needed are already in the laptop. Leave the movie-watching & software-installing to the home/office/hotel room. The DVD drive can be checked in the suitcase.

3. Option to power off graphics card, camera, etc when not used for task at hand. Prolong battery life.

4. Lithium polymer batteries? For comparable charge densities, aren't they lighter?

Challenge: Fujitsu already has a 15" notebook at 2.4kg, though specs aren't so impressive, imho. Can Dell produce one at 2kg or less, & with specs "to die for"?

"Trade In" Program

Advertising and Marketing, Environment, Sales Strategies submitted by john_saddington 02/19/07

I'd love to see a "Trade In" Program and/or initiative, where a customer who's been a long time customer could trade in an old system for a new one, or at least, a good sized discount.

I've got an old laptop and seriously need a new one. It's been out of warranty for a long time, but, would love to get a discount for a new one if I could trade it in.

This would also be environmentally healthy! 34 Comments »

New Dell Retail Store! Death to Mall Kiosks!

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies submitted by evilspell 02/16/07

Dell should open a retail store very similar to the Apple store. I know that they have small kiosks inside malls that they try to sell Plasma TV's and a couple laptops next to a guy selling knock off sunglasses and verizon cell phone sales sharks! Very unprofessional. Open a classy Dell Store and offer Tech support right in the store just like the Genius Bar in the Apple Store. 144 Comments »

More OS choices

Dell Web Site, Operating Systems submitted by yop 02/19/07

I would like to see more choices of OS like... No OS, Linux, Windows.
Also Better Linux driver support, but better Linux support in general.

Make the fan on laptops make less noise please.
Also more choices of software like Firefox, OpenOffice, Thunderbird etc, etc.

Don't like to be forced to buy an OS that I'm not going to use, like MS Windows.
Don't see the point of wasting money of stuff that I never going to use, since I always install Linux based system like Debian, Ubuntu and soo. 4 Comments »

A single DVD that will install correct drivers on any model of Dell PC

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by danwarne 02/18/07

I've just posted an opinion editorial about this at APCMag.com -- http://apcmag.com/node/5359. Seems to me that a largely overlooked feature of Apple Boot Camp is the driver CD that will install drivers onto any model of Intel Mac with no searching/downloading required by the user. This could be a 'Dell crushing feature' unless Dell comes up with something similar. It has to be this easy: one click, and all drivers for that machine are identified and installed. And the CD or DVD image has to be downloadable. 18 Comments »

Internet Laptop Design Contest

Advertising and Marketing, Laptops submitted by mucho 02/16/07

In order to get direct input from Dell customers, and tie more closely with consumer trends, why not sponsor a contest over the internet to design a line of laptops for home/consumer use? This would tie into Dell's philosophy of direct relationships. So the new laptop would not only be built specifically for you, but also DESIGNED directly by Dell customers. Of course, designs would have to be reviewed by Dell engineers to be sure that they are technically feasible and can be built within cost constraints, etc... Seems like this could be a very cool way to design a new generation of home/consumer laptops thru collaboration directly with Dell customers. 9 Comments »

Remove metallic Windows sticker

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by bastos 02/21/07

The unremovable metallic "Vista capable" or "Designed for XP" sticker serves no purpose as soon as the laptop is in use by the end-user. Dell should design its notebooks to be sleek, stylish and simple -- and a permanent stickers is the exact opposite. This is (in part) why Apple sells the most stylish laptops, and why the one you buy is never as nice as the one you see in the promotional-pictures (no stickers!)

Replace the metallic sticker with an easily removable one !!! Dell should be large enough to stand up to Microsoft (who no doubt enforces the metal stickers). 23 Comments »

Use only the best and brightest LCDs for all laptops! No sub-par manufacturers need apply!

Laptops submitted by astudios 02/17/07

From what I understand, today's Dell LCDs on laptops are made by Toshiba, LG, Samsung, etc.. why make it an anticipating "waiting game" for the customer to see which quality of LCD they get when their laptop comes in? The LCD display is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT part of any laptop. Dell.. please, use ONLY the best and brightest LCDs on all of your laptops.

Quick story of my experience.. I'm a huge Dell-fan and buy lots of PCs and laptops from them for myself, my business, and for my friends and family. The LCD on their 700m laptops were the *absolute best* .. After that, I purchased the XPS1210. The LCD was "duller" and I was disappointed. But then I ordered the XPS1410 for a friend and when it came in, I was horrified with poor viewing angles of the LCD. The only way you could comfortably view the screen was when it was PERFECTLY square with your eyes! I was almost ashamed to give it to my friend. Finally, recently, I ordered the Inspiron 6000 (SXUGA?) and was relieved that is was much better. But still nothing like the 700m I used to own.

What happened to Dell's LCDs? Please make this top priority and bring the "wow" back into your laptops! (And oh, another thing, if you could somehow make your laptops thinner and lighter, that'd be great too!).

Thank you for allowing us this forum. 24 Comments »
