Allow your customers to change the colour of the laptop lid

Laptops submitted by programatix Yesterday

I'm seeing that more and more colours are offered by Dell (after I purchased my laptop) and it really hurt seeing the colour I wanted so much finally being offered but is out of my reach.

It would be great if Dell allows customers to change the colour of the laptop lid (maybe with a small price) after the system is purchased. 13 Comments »

movie night

New Product Ideas submitted by bledyard Jul 2

picture this... the long lines at the movie theatre, the crying baby that the mother cant do anything with, the pre-teens and teens running wild. If you are as tired of this as I am, I propose we do something about it. I propose that we develop a partnership with either cable companies or satalite providers and have the movies that are in the theatre in our household. I know that I would pay $50 per movie to have this feature available to me so I wont have to deal with the above situations. 10 Comments »

Ubuntu on Studio Notebooks

Linux, Laptops submitted by joshhendo 3 days ago

The new Dell Studio laptops look great! Taking the best design features from many other Dell products, and put them all into one.

This laptop actually looks like it should run Linux (that is the first thing I thought when I saw it). I don't know why I say that, but it just does. So, why not give it ago? I don't have a Studio, though I suspect it shouldn't take too much to get Ubuntu working (may need one or two drivers written, but from my experience with Dell laptops and Ubuntu, most things work well).

This is one of the products I would particularly like to see Ubuntu as an option to be pre-inatlled on if Ubuntu can't be an option on all models. 2 Comments »

Small Laptops

New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by jolorraine Jul 1

I would like to see from Dell an ultra micro computer. Something small to fit in your purse. I saw one months ago, but it only had Linux OS. The smaller I have seen on Dell was a 12 inch years ago. Is there something Dell can consider? 7 Comments »

limit the number of new idea submitions withing a 24 hour period

IdeaStorm submitted by undead999 Jul 1

I see a lot of what i consider spam posting going on, obscure ideas and nonsense ideas getting posted. One poster will post 5 or more ideas that are duplicates or not in Dell's line of business, this forces good ideas to to page 2 or 3 where they may not get the attention/votes they deserve. I think each uses should be allowed to post 1 or 2 ideas within any 24 hour period. 8 Comments »

Alternate navigation paths on Dell.com

Dell Web Site submitted by efriese Jul 1

There needs to be alternate forms of navigation besides flash. I work for the U.S. Government and was unable to navigate to the government section for a server quote. Flash is blocked for most government computers. Comment »

Linux banner on Dell.com consumer page

Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rafaelrojasc Jul 1

Probably this has been thought of before, but Dell hasn't really implemented it: Dell.com features Ubuntu products with a very small and almost undetectable mention on the menu. I think Dell should feature the Linux products with a small yet readable banner with a Tux penguin, an Ubuntu logo or something similar mentioning YOUR UBUNTU IS HERE, YOU'RE GETTING UBUNTU, etc. It's just a matter of promoting your choices a bit more prominently. Dell.com consumer-oriented Linux page

Dell, Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by rafaelrojasc Jul 1

I know Dell already has a Linux-oriented Web page at www.dell.com/linux but it's too BUSINESS-oriented. Dell should make a small Web page explaining to regular consumers the benefit of using Linux and their Ubuntu offering (no virus, no spyware, rock stable, choice, free as in freedom), and then direct the user to Dell's Ubuntu computers, instead of the "cautionary tale" you get when you click on the "Dell ubuntu" link which says something like "Ubuntu's not for everyone. If you want Windows, come back.".

This proposed Web page can also say something like that, but it can also feature all the positives of using Linux. I mean, Apple tells you all about Macs telling you how nice they look and are, how stable it is and they don't really care if most Users go for Windows. It's all about saying "here's a choice. You can try it". Comment »

Graphics upgrade for Studio 15

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by extortioner Jul 1

The Studio 15 concept is great, and is superb for the space between the Inspirons and the XPS, but there's only 1 problem: Graphic cards!

Even the 15xx series of the Inspirons have the Geforce 8400 as an option, and the Studio 15 get a Radeon with the almost the same graphical power as an onboard Intel X3000 (OK, maybe that's a bit exaggerated).

I'm a huge fan of Dell and the new Studio line, but the only thing missing from making it a big hit is a graphics upgrade (that and they should ve waited for Montevina, but that's just a matter of opinion).

Please Dell: Give us Nvidia options with some power for the Studio 15 line. 3 Comments »

USB connector at keyboard for extension...

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility submitted by mauricio_martins Jun 30

It might look as I'm trying to promote my previous post: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66299/Simplify_USB_wiring_redesigning_s...

Well in these days I bought a bunch of things to attach to USB like USB externam memory, video capture cards and a bluetooth... It comes in my mind the ancient idea S*n and A**ple had: Why don't Dell add a USB mini hub in its keyboards just to improve connectivity?

I know the "word of order" today is wireless... but some devices will perform better wired... Well, to simplify my wires at my desk, I hacked my keyboard to add a 2 port hub inside of it... I hade my mouse cable shortened by a half and now, KB and mouse works attached to the computer via 1 wire... The hardest part of this task was to find a space to accomodate that hub. :) Think that! :) 2 Comments »

OCZ Core series SSD should be offered on Dell systems

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jervis961 Jul 1

The SATA II Solid State Drives are currently priced at $169 (32GB), $259 (64GB) and $479. Dell should offer these on their systems or produce a competitive alternative. These are a significant cost savings over Dell's current offerings of a 64GB SSD as a $575 upgrade.

New XPS M1330 9cell battery shape

XPS products submitted by jeopardy Jun 27

The 9cell battery for the XPS M1330 should drop straight down at the back of the notebook, instead of the weird almost "Z" shape it does at the moment.

The M1530 9cell does this.

I am not requesting that the battery be flush with the system - I know it needs to stick out a bit, and personally I prefer the slightly raised angle and improved cooling the 9cell provides. Comment »

Copy new features on the Studio back to the XPS line

XPS products submitted by jeopardy Jun 27

Just a brief idea;

Some of the new Studio features should be copied back to the XPS line. These include:-

- LED Displays (still unavailable on M1530 in UK)

- new MediaDirect icon/button (latest design standardised across all Inspiron/Studio/XPS products, if you're wondering why, some of my friends often mistake it for a "Home" button which they thought would launch Internet Explorer..)

- backlit keyboards (if space permits.. would be fantastic to see that on the M1330) 3 Comments »

Work Back to the States

Service and Support submitted by meand3ts Jun 30

I have been very upset trying to get help with my Dell product. I could not understand the person and they could not understand what I was saying. So why don't you use Housewifes who don't work or Househusbands. A lot of people don't have jobs that know how to work on computers. So, instead of paying them a salary pay them on each job they do. You don't have a hourly salary, no benefits to pay, and they will have someone here in the US. Now if it is something they can't handle then they pass it on to someone that can. That person don't have to be staff but someone that knows computers. You can also offer classes to those that want more training. I am sure your complaints will go down. To make sure they have solved the problem you send a survey to the customer. 2 Comments »

Another comment from Michael Dell on Ideastorm.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Jun 30

It's been well over a year since Micheal Dell commented on IdeaStorm. It was nice to see his comments, since that made it look like IdeaStorm was really valued all the way up in Dell. Starbuck's CEO has posted more recently than that on their ideastorm, and some of Dell's competitors are very open in interacting with their users on their blogs many times a month.

Back in March 2007, when Michael Dell made his first first comment on IdeaStorm he gave the quite encouraging comment:

Thank you to all of our community for your ideas and suggestions! We are listening and learning a great deal and changing our company with your ideas.
But for the past year there's no sign that he cares anymore.

Just so we know this site still matters to Dell, have Michael Dell come by at least once a year and comment on the ten highest voted ideas so we know the votes mean something too. Even if his only comment is "I can't comment on this one", we'd at least know he's aware of what the top voted ideas are. 7 Comments »

M1330 Bios upgrade for booting from Sd/MMC Card

XPS products submitted by albert72 Jun 30 **REVIEWED**

A new Bios revision which make possible to boot from the internal SD card reader of M1330.

It would be very useful to boot a different operative system just inserting
an sd card.
Sd card now are 16Gb and 64Gb!! It's just like adding a "small" second hard disk!!
Please Please make internal SD card Reader bootable on M1330.
And of course release a new biuos upgrade with these feature!
Thanks! (from a multi year dell notebook user!! From C series Pentium II)

Innovative cooling pads

Laptops submitted by ringas85 Jun 29

Dell should have it as a standard feature to include a cooling pad for every laptop they sell. And the laptop colling pads should be the same size as the laptop they buy with the ability to lock-in to the laptop so it acts as one unit yet it will provide cooling as 2 units.I bought a targus laptop cooling pad with 2 fans and my Dell Inspiron 1501 went from a typical 86 degrees to a amazing 52 degrees.Makes a huge difference and will help make the laptops last longer, dell would save money on repair issues to to laptops overheating and blowing up.Just makes way more logic in my mind 9 Comments »

Light-Up Dell Logo

Laptops submitted by brokencrystal Jun 29

Make use of the LCD back-light on Dell notebooks by allowing some of the light to escape out of the back (cover) through the Dell logo causing it to light up bright white. You could make it light up any color to match the notebooks color scheme by using filters (different color plastic) while designing the covers. For example: You purchase a red notebook, you have the option of a white, red, blue color light on your Dell logo. You could also save $15.00 by selecting no light in the logo. While this is mostly for cosmetic, advertisement, and branding purposes, the light on the back could indicate that the notebook is turned on, off, or in power save mode from the back of the unit. 6 Comments »

Add Programable Touch Buttons to Laptops

Laptops submitted by james-94 Jun 27

Where the capacitive media control buttons are why not add maybe 4 or 5 programable buttons to launch applications. They could just be numbered 1,2,3,4,5 and each one is able to be programed to run any application etc. that you want.

I got this idea after I read jeopardy's idea here and thought instead to just add programable buttons instead of replacing existing ones. 2 Comments »

Allow MediaDirect button to be re-assigned

Software submitted by jeopardy Jun 27

If a customer chooses to uninstall Dell MediaDirect, provide a separate configuration application which can re-assign the MediaDirect button to launch another program (eg iTunes).

This is possible by editing the registry so presumably a simple program could easily be written and included.

Perhaps this feature could be incorporated into QuickSet? Comment »
