Make a calendar with all COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas

Advertising and Marketing, IdeaStorm submitted by krasmussen 09/22/07 **REVIEWED**

One of the biggest annoyances with IdeaStorm is that the horizon for an idea being implemented is very blurry, if at all existing. If you're lucky, you get "third quarter 2009", but mostly, there is no timeframe at all. This leads to the feeling that not much is being done, and exactly that feeling is what IdeaStorm should be eliminating.

Therefore, I propose that you make a list or calender with all the COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas with timeframes for all of them. Just a "december 2008" would be nice, or better yet, "deadline 31st november 2008".

I don't know if this is connected with some goal management inside Dell, if it is, maybe you should work on improving that, too?

Today, the best way to know the progress of an idea is through Ideas in Action, our Weekly Update or Dell comments in the thread.

Recycle & refurbish old Dell PCs back to Dell for 10% discount

Environment submitted by reg 05/18/07

Recycle your old Dell back to Dell for a 10% discount on new equipment. Dell can then secure overwrite erase the hard drive, install Ubuntu + hardware drivers, then donate the hardware to unemployment, food stamp, and welfare offices Nationwide. The social services offices then can pass out the refurbished used equipment to its clients, and Dell can be given BIG tax breaks by the State and Federal Systems.

1. Recycle - Turn it in, don't landfill it.
2. Reuse - There is still life left in that old hardware
3. Reduce - Buy new electronics less often, get 5 years use out of every PC.
4. Refuse - wasteful spending, wasteful practices & wasteful companies.
5. Refute - Once wasteful practices or procedures are identified, correct the problem with Action! 58 Comments »

15.4 size XPS system

XPS products, Laptops submitted by lilredfoxie 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I think theyre needs to be another 15.4" size XPS system, currently the XPS lineup has no middle ground, theres either the m1210 which is too small, or the m1710 which is too large ( I dont count the m2010, since its not really a laptop, its more of its own hybrid desktop/laptop comptuer thing) use the e1505 chassis, give it the cool XPS lights, and a D-dock connectior below
Check out the Idea in Action post for details about our new 15in system.

Make Flat Panel TV's that happen to be PC's as well.

Monitors and Displays submitted by johnslade 02/28/07

I know that dell makes flat panel tv's that can be used as PC monitors as well, but lets take the TV a step further. As the concept of PC/Home media/Home control systems take root, Dell wil be ready with the PC-TV's in one. 9 Comments »

flip up keyboard for notebook

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by caskade 05/10/07

I often use my notebook in horizontal positions (on the couch, the bed, the floor). The problem is that I cannot see the keyboard and the keys. That is when I want to type in something I have to change position.

I would like to have a notebook where I can flip up the keyboard some degrees. Of course, stability should be guaranteed.

Upgradeable Laptop Video Card - Here's the Answer!

Monitors and Displays submitted by captainsensible 05/08/07

A company called Magma though is now selling an easy to use device that will allow most ‘desktop-only’ PCI Express cards to be used with a laptop.

The ExpressBox1 is like an external drive enclosure except that it’s designed to hold a PCI-E graphics card. There’s a smaller version that supports cards up to 6.6 inches in length and a pro version for cards up to 12.28 inches in length. They connect to a laptop via the ExpressCard/34 module and a PCI-E cable and Magma claims there is no latency in the connection since there’s a theoretical maximum throughput of 2000Mbps (or 250 MegaBytes per second) in each direction. At the moment the ExpressBox1 is only designed for single-width video cards needing a maximum of 55 watts of power. However double-width cards that require auxillary power will be supported later this year.

Of course performance has never come cheap in the PC world. The standard version ExpressBox1 is available on the Magma website for $729 (that’s without a graphics card) while the Pro version is available for $749.

Recommend Windows XP, not Windows Vista

Operating Systems submitted by dankster 05/08/07

The whole world, even Microsoft, knows that Windows XP is a much better choice than Vista at this time. It may not have the eye candy as Vista but thats not as important as reliability, stability and usability. Why would you say "Dell recomends Vista" on all your computers? Do you really recommend Vista or is Microsoft making you say that? Obviously, vista should be an option, but not "Recommended". You should be saying "Dell recommends Windows XP". Too many people are going to have a horrible Vista experience on Dell computers. 15 Comments »

Dell goes GREENER ... _and_ saves money?!?!

Dell, Environment submitted by phubert 05/09/07

Vote FOR this if you want to CONGRATULATE Dell

Forgive me, Dell, if you've posted this somewhere and I've missed it, BUT...

Dell reinvents the cardboard box

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/05/08/dell_box_multipack/
Dell will revitalize its server business by, er, shifting fewer boxes.

The strategy may seem counterintuitive until you realize that we're quite literally talking about boxes - those cardboard things that go around the servers. Dell today revealed - a liberal use of the word - project Multipack. This initiative - still liberal - will see Dell pack large numbers of systems in fewer boxes, helping it save on costs and cardboard consumption.

An open solution to categorization

IdeaStorm submitted by cosh 05/08/07

This was originally posted on May 8. Lots of people were saying IdeaStorm was cluttered, and that spam and duplicates were appearing, that we needed better categories and a search engine that returns better results, and that it was taking too long to get bug fixes and improvements.

I built a new system, a mirror of every idea on the site, to try and sort it out myself, and to demonstrate to Dell that when everybody is complaining, improvements should happen in days, not months.

It has a better search engine than IdeaStorm, and the ability to browse ideas based on the Dell-assigned tags. As well as demonstrating good potential features for IdeaStorm, it should prove useful as it is.

The link:» » New IdeaStorm Categorizer « «

Initially I was trying to get people to help sort the ideas into categories, but I'm considering adding a robot to sort the rest of them out automatically. Thanks very much to people who helped categorize ideas!

Improve the appearance of DELL Notebooks and Inspirons and Dimensions

Dimension products, Inspiron products, Laptops submitted by sandesh_airen 05/04/07

Hi,

Feel, the one thing lacking in DELL is to improve the appearance of the Notebooks. Look at a T43 from IBM and look at Latitude D620 . Ignoring the functionality the T43 looks great in appearance.

Same is the case with Inspirons and Dimensions. We should improve the way they look. Looks attract attention. Involves the customer to dig for information. Then the customer starts with the comparing of the functionality at the same price.

Also we should have a notebook/ Desktops with all in one features of gizmo and functionalities. It's difficult i know but this can be a differentating factor in competitive times.

We should also have copy, scan, fax, printer etc in our printers. But then again the appearance should be more attractive.

We feel and are doing great but in changing competitive market we continously need to have product differentiation at competitive cost to have an edge which is very difficult taks.

Hope DELL wins 1 Comment »

Don't describe Windows as an "Upgrade"

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by stevefraser 02/19/07

If Linux is offered as the Operating System (As has been suggested many times on this site), don't describe an offer to purchase Windows as an "Upgrade", for example "Upgrade to Microsoft Windows for only $$$", Some other phrase should be used instead, such as "Add in Microsoft Windows for $$$", as the word Upgrade may give the impression that Windows is superior to Linux, and there are several people who would disagree with that statement. 8 Comments »

Publish the "noise" specs on every PC

Dell Web Site, Desktops and Laptops submitted by stk 05/02/07

I want to buy a quiet PC, but Dell doesn't quote noise specs anywhere on the website.

For example, the XPS 210 says: "Runs cool, quiet, and is energy efficient"
but the tech specs on the noise are nowhere to be found (not even on the "tech specs" page for that PC).

If you really make quiet PCs, then why hide the noise specs? Why not make it a standard part of the tech specs page for each machine? 9 Comments »

Don't Make Me Go Straight to Crucial after ordering

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by pepitoe 02/19/07

Memory prices are still ridiculous, and it is common knowledge that if you want more than the standard memory in a dell, you buy it elsewhere. If you priced it more competitively you might actually sell more. At the moment to upgrade from 1GB to 2GB in an Inspiron 9400 costs £211.50, the same from Crucial is £119.94 and you will have 1GB of Dells memory left to sell or whatever. 5 Comments »

Show the Vista performance rating during system configuration.

Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

People may not realize that Vista gives your computer a performance rating based on several factors (processor, RAM, hard drive and video card).
Dell should show the performance rating on the side as you build your computer and update it as you go along changing the configuation. This should give people a guage as to if an upgrade will really improve your overall performance and also what kinds of games and programs your new computer will be capable of.

Dell if Microsoft is giving you a hard time, stop selling their products

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by mrlinux11 05/08/07

Microsoft needs you more than you need them, most big customers dont even buy a Windows License since they have Volume License. You can put more of dent in their sales than yours 11 Comments »

Please Dell, if you give us something for free, give something good

Printers and Ink, Sales Strategies submitted by j.bandringa 05/04/07

Recently, I bought a Dell computer and got a 725 Printer with it for free. I found out that there is only one cartridge in it for both black and colour printing. Now after some printing my prints turn from black into brown into red. I also have to buy a new (color) cartridge very often. Of course these cartridges are only for sale at Dell. I do not like to be locked in!

1. Please Dell, if you give me something for free, give something good. Give a quality printer or give me just a cheaper computer.

2. Please, do not sell or include printers with only one cartridge for both colour and black/white printing.

3. Finally, also start selling printers with standard cartridges, that you can buy anywhere. Give us freedom of choice!

Allow Us to Delete Our Own Articles

IdeaStorm submitted by josmar52789 05/03/07

To my knowledge, we can't even delete the articles we post on IdeaStorm. What in the world is Dell thinking? Maybe that's why it's so cluttered on this site... 10 Comments »
