Multiple laptop screens
Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by nizzy
Jun 12
With this new multiple laptop screens innovation, many graphic designers, stock market traders or engineers can now open and display more than one windows on different screens. I have the design in 3D images from different angles and perspectives. These additional screens are located around the actual laptop screen within the base unit. Each screen can be rotatable and they can be slide in/out. Also laptop can dock to this multi-screen base unit, All screens can also be folded with the laptop for travelling as well. For example, a dam engineer can use this new idea to present his machine parts on different screens to his staff. Or, a stock market trader can watch his/her stocks from multiple screens without opening many windows on one monitor. How about this? A doctor is giving presentation about a broken bone construction without turning his laptop screen to people who are sitting across him, because each screen can be twisted to opposite direction and window turns upside down for correct display direction. There are many useful niches for this product.
THIS IDEA HAS BEEN PATENTED IN EUROPE AND TURKEY. US AND JAPAN PATENTS ARE ON THE WAY.
How to hear from an official a bad or good comments.
Thank you Nizam

MOBO Extension
Desktops and Laptops submitted by lucky7

- Today, you can upgrade some of the computer HW functionality via external add-ons such as adding a larger HD, changing to a new display, or adding a new keyboard. - This provides some expanded computing and may forestall obsolescence.
- Why not look into providing the capability to expand a desktop, laptop or handheld indefinitely via an external MOBO extension function? - This could potentially let users add SW to their computers nearly indefinitely, while never running into a performance ceiling. - A MOBO extension could be a good half-step to a full PC/laptop upgrade.

Recomendations for M1730
XPS products submitted by codyfranklin205

I have seen the M1730, and I am amazed at this high end gaming laptop, but... Dell leaves something to be desired. I have combined several (say... 80) reviews as well as my own experience to summarize what should be included in the next lineup. Below I have listed some recomendations for the next model.
1. HDMI output 2. Internal modem 3. More USP ports 4. Gigabit ethernet 5. More color options for lid 6. Availible WiFi with 4 types (a/b/g/n)

M1730 More USB Slots on the back.
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by stormrider451
May 17
Hello there..
I currently own a M1730 and I think this computer is lacking in the USB department. It does have a total of four USB slots (one in back, two on the right and one in the left). But, I think one in the back is too little. Even my Inspiron E1405 has two USB slots on the back. I think the M1730 should have at least two slots in the back because this computer serves as a Desktop replacement for many people. And due to its relative lack of mobility, it usually stays put on the desk (as in my case). Therefore, the printer will be connected, and many other things will be connected to this computer at all times like a desktop usually is. Therefore, once that back USB is taken up by the printer, any other cabled device will have to go right on the side which looks aweful, the less cables you see plugged into your computer, the better. So, I speak out of my own experience that the DELL should have at least 2, 3 or even 4 in the back. It ends up looking so ugly with the cables being plugged in the sides.

Dell... Offer Faster RAM!
Sales Strategies submitted by incubus240
Jan 20
Dell needs to offer faster RAM (i.e. If the FSB on the laptop is 800Mhz then match with 800Mhz RAM rather than 667Mhz RAM). I always have to buy the minimum amount of RAM for the system and end up throwing it away. They charge me $350 for 2GB of 667Mhz then I turn around and purchase 4GB of 800Mhz for $130. Since they make you buy at least 2GB... it is such a waiste!

Portable power supply
New Product Ideas, Laptop Power submitted by magiting
May 5
Hi Mr. Michael Dell,
I would like to suggest if you can make another product line which is a rechargeable 2.5 inch Li-Ion battery that is a plug-n-play design. I do not have doubts about the batteries that today's laptops have but each brand are making their own design. I wish a USB insert portable power supply would debut in the market sold by Dell which can have a battery power ranging from 2-5hours. This is especially good when in the mountains camping or making seminars in remote areas. It is a path towards standardized portable power supply for laptops.
Thanks, magiting

Making IdeaStorm Even Better!
IdeaStorm submitted by pmdigangi
May 4 **REVIEWED**
Here are a few ideas that Dell should consider to create a better, more effective IdeaStorm Community!
1.) Define a clear process that defines for users how to identify and describe their ideas!
Provide users with templates and help guides for submitting their ideas to IdeaStorm. The current process creates the potential for people to mis-categorize ideas, or not designate categories for their idea, making it harder for the community to locate and evaluate all ideas. IdeaStorm needs to provide examples of good and bad idea postings in order to help community members submit ideas that Dell can quickly assess and adopt!
2.) Provide users with the tools for developing consensus!
Let community members have the ability to gain some consensus on controversial ideas. Consider implementing some tools that allow community members to poll each other to make decisions on how to improve the idea.
3.) Dedicate personnel to interact as an organizational representative within the community!
IdeaStorm has certainly improved on its communication with its members. The addition of several moderators has made response times quicker, but members still do not hear from the upper management at Dell about what they think of ideas and whether or not they are feasible. Dell needs to get more involved by not only providing administrative support in terms of site management, but also executive support by having a senior manager login and talk with community members.
4.) Ask questions to understand!
Dell shouldn’t just listen to community members’ ideas, but also ask questions so that the community can improve them! IdeaStorm was created to give feedback on the products and services Dell offers. The community is here to help Dell become a better organization, but in order for the community to be effective we need feedback too. Ask members questions about the ideas to make sure that ideas are not disregarded due to a poor description or presentation. If Dell does not understand an Idea – give the community this feedback so the community can help refine the idea for Dell.
5.) If you let members vote, make it count!
Sometimes members’ views on what constitutes a great product are different from Dell’s. IdeaStorm was created to expand Dell’s ability to leverage ideas from outside the formal organizational boundaries. When members vote for an idea, it should count! Even if Dell does not see it as viable at first, the idea deserves exploring. Dell needs to consider that stifling the democracy of the community frustrates and disenfranchises the community.
6.) When Dell is ready to move forward on an idea, present progress clearly and openly!
When an idea does move forward, it is still difficult for the community to track. Make sure the progress updates are clear about what the next steps are, to keep the community informed. The community wants to know the next steps in detail. If we are your volunteer ideaforce, keep us informed so that we can correct misinterpretations and perhaps provide that key piece of information that is preventing Dell from taking advantage of our ideas.

Adopt the truly Green and universal GreenPlug Power Supply standard
Environment, Laptop Power submitted by diggaddict
Apr 30
Green Plug is the first developer of digital technology that enables real-time collaboration between electronic devices and their power sources. With Green Plug, however, intelligent power supplies communicate with electronic devices and agree upon device power requirements for all devices connected to them. All cables and connectors are uniform; so, they work with any device! Being intelligent power sources, they eliminate wasted “phantom power” (power that is wasted when chargers are plugged in and either connected to devices that are fully charged or have no devices connected to them) and improve power utilization and efficiency.
Come on Dell - Save the Planet and Support GreenPlug ( www.greenplug.us ) !!
We can do away with all those ridiculous powerblocks and have one power standard. If you dont do this I am sure Apple will soon.

Offer machine specific XP drivers.
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Operating Systems submitted by jtellis
Apr 28
I recently bought a refurb 1721. Because of development work I'm doing I need to be running XP Pro. I understand that this machine is designed to work with Vista, but apparently your tech guys are telling people that the drivers don't even exist for XP - which they do.
Given that you are now offering XP as an option on equivalent machines, could you post a machine specific driver package for those of us who would like to switch to XP? That way I don't have to dig through and figure out all the drivers I need, I could just bring down a standard set.

XPS Laptop Dual Cooling
XPS products, Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by funeagle
Apr 27
1) Keep the internal fan for standard cooling when carrying the laptop around.
2) Allow the user to select a dual cooling (water plugs) as an option when configuring the laptop.
3) Hide the two water plugs inside the notebook like on the image bellow:
The user can: 1) Plug in the waterpipes when using it for extensive period at home 2) Pull out the waterpipes when moving the notebook
This way the users will be able to disperse the heat when using the laptop at home using powerful and yet affordable cooling to make the laptop enjoyably silent. Imagine a silent laptop with a reserator like on the picture bellow:

Reveal Truth About Microsoft License / Promotion Deals
Advertising and Marketing, Dell submitted by gear
Apr 27
It is now an open secret that Dell PCs sold with Ubuntu and "No OS" except for servers are more expensive than PCs with a Windows license.
It is also an open secret that Dell is not featuring Ubuntu and Windows XP prominently in accordance with customer demands.
It is also assumed that Dell is under a non-disclosure agreement that prohibits the disclosure of terms Microsoft imposes on the OEM licenses, and also the terms for participating in their promotional programs and other inducements to be an exclusive Microsoft shop.
However, in less than a year, the Administration will change in Washington, and with it, the potential for renewed interest in the anti-competitive behavior of Microsoft and their illegal efforts to extend their monopoly to other markets.
i.e. hardwiring in Microsoft search in Vista and making it very inconvenient for a user to use an alternative search engine, or imposing their Internet Explorer Browser by making Microsoft / Windows update incompatible with all other browsers and not offering customers a choice of alternatives like Firefox when you buy their operating system.
Here are my speculations:
Dell is incentivized by Microsoft to participate in these anti-competitive schemes by the following methods:
- Install Microsoft Vista in lieu of any other operating system
- pays a license fee to Microsoft for every PC sold regardless of whether it ships with a MIcrosoft OS installed.
- rewarded for not pre-installing Firefox
- prevented from not offering "Media Direct" or a equivalent system or making this DRM scheme optional.
- incentivized to offer no viable option to Office except for Microsoft Office Live even when viable options like Googledocs, Open Office, etc. exist and are 'out there'.
- incentivized to bundle Microsoft Works with every PC sold
- prevented from disclosing that Dell is a willing party to these efforts to illegally extend Microsoft's monopoly and participating in anti-competitive measures
Under such circumstances, Dell may have considerable legal liability and exposure to anti-trust laws by colluding with Microsoft.
While it may be a year before these issues come up in the USA, the issue may come up in Europe, where the EU has an active ongoing investigation of Microsoft going on.
I would hate to see Dell fined by the EU like Microsoft.
Please start revealing the truth --- because if the terms are as I speculated above, it likely will be the same terms Microsoft give to every other major manufacturer of PCs.

HeatDock for XPS laptops
XPS products, Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by funeagle
Apr 26
Most of the XPS laptops would be used at home and the users would like to benefit from a quiet computer. The laptop does not have to be quiet on the go (that is the tradeoff to keep it affordable) but when using it at home would prefer a quiet solution.
I would welcome a heat docking solution which would touch a copper surface on the bottom of the laptop, pulling away the heat and ideally keep the internal fan off when the cpu is idle or nearly idle.
How to disperse the heat is a different question but you could offer passive and active (water cooling) solutions. My preference would be to able to connect to a Reserator like http://www.zalman.co.kr/ENG/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=182
The docking station should be stylish and could have monitor and usb connection with 4? extra usb ports to function as a real docking station.
Instead of copper touch nanotubes should be preferred (thanks jervis961): http://www.dailytech.com/Sheets+of+Cheap+Carbon+Nanotubes+Now+a+Reality/artic...

Show Max Specs in System Descriptions
Desktops and Laptops submitted by dfrandin
Apr 23
It would make research on ordering Dell systems if the maximum values of RAM, hard drive size etc, were shown on the system description pages. A good example of what I'm talking about: The Optiplex 755, shows on the memory section, "Up to 4.0GB DDR2 Non-ECC SDRAM, 800MHz, (4DIMM)". However, if you take the time to read the online Optiplex service manual, you find that the system supports 2GB DIMMs, for a total of up to 8GB.. A non-technical user would not know to double-check the service manual to find that information out.. Also the Storage entry states "Up to SATA 3.0Gb/s, RAID 1 Data Security, Capacities up to 250GB".. I strongly suspect that the 755 is not limited to a 250GB drive. In the case of RAM, with 64Bit OS becoming more popular and RAM (other than Dell) dropping in price, the 8GB support on the 755, I'm sure, will be heavily used. Please let your customers and potential customers learn this info without resorting to reading the service manual...

Dell should begin producing all 64 bit pc's. WIth rumors of Windows Vista being the last OS available in 32 bit, they should get consumers ready with 64 bit pc's, at reasonable prices.
