Dell Outlet Should Offer OS Choice of Linux

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by durango95 05/01/07

Budget minded consumers love the Dell Outlet because we can save hundreds on the latest equipment... and I am batting 100% on the quality of the systems being shipped from the Outlet.

HOWEVER... One thing that irks me is that I am forced to take WINDOWS VISTA when buying these outlet machines. The first thing I do after receiving them is format them and install Fedora Core 6. I have bought twelve XPS 410s in the past calendar quarter and have formatted them all clean and installed FC6.

It's just plain unfair to pay the Microsoft Tax and agree to their unreasonable EULAs if we do not have to. I am all for giving B. Gates and company money for any of their products that actually give business value (i.e. usually this means Excel or possibly Visio in this day and age as business-line people require perfect Office-compatible functionality -- OOo is great for developers and more casual users but not necessary for front line heavily analysis people). I'd rather the software money go to VMWare or Red Hat or some company actually delivering uncommon value nowadays.

Since Dell will not be able to compete with Apple on HW/SW combination OS choice is king at this point. It behooves Dell to ally with Linux now more than ever to face the Apple threat. 2 Comments »

Don't limit Ubuntu sales (like the media's reporting you are doing)

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by jmxz 05/08/07

From: http://techiqmag.com/2007/05/08/dell-limits-ubuntu-linux-sales/

If you’re planning to load up on Dell’s new Ubuntu Linux systems for a corporate department or small business, Dell may have a surprise for you. As the old saying goes, read the fine print.

Yeah, I know the article mentions you have similar limitations on Windows Home machines -- but don't limit the Ubuntu sales for small-businesses. It's not clear from the article if you intend to do that or not. 8 Comments »

Shop Dell PCs with Linux. Require more visibility!

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by yesmathew 06/01/07

More visibility required for "Shop Dell PCs with Linux" while shopping Windows PCs!

Checked this morning at USA > Home & Home Office. Very less to no visibility on selling Linux based PCs. Unless one accidentally lands at Linux page.

Request to add links on all Windows based PC pages saying " Shop Dell PCs with Linux* "

Provide OPEN Linux drivers for all DELL products!

Linux submitted by lucianotolfo 05/27/07 **REVIEWED**

I think it's important for DELL to provide OPEN and FREE Linux drivers for all their products (notboocks, desktops, printers, etc.) to mark the way for other manufacturers, to develop linux drivers too (or they can work together with the linux community to do that)

Also the Linux users can get an easy way to configure their DELL products on Linux. Because linux users also take into account which hardware will be compatible on their Linux systems
We have open Linux drivers on our server products today and are driving our desktop and notebook vendors to do the same.

Make a DEBIAN repository for DELL's drivers

Linux submitted by dutchfish 05/04/07

Ever had to install a linux desktop or server? Does the endless search for drivers and documentation how to install them ring a bell? Your problems could be over and make DELL your first choice of buying a linux desktop or server if there was a DEBIAN repository for DELL's hardware. 5 Comments »

SELL LINUX COMPATIBLE PRINTERS

Linux, Printers and Ink submitted by nycnikato 05/27/07

Right now DEll sells rebranded Lexmark printers. I bought and A920 later to find out that it is very very poorly supported on Linux, and also does not support Macintosh. Most Lexmark/DEll printers for home/soho use are not well supported under Linux. Here are some ideas to fix that, in order of preference

1) Sell Rebranded BROTHER printers, Virtually ALL of brother's printers and multifunctions support Linux (and Mac), they have open source binaries and source code that you could include with ubuntu or any other

http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/cups_drivers.html< there is no bad blood or competition between brother and DELL
Brother printers are very very inexpensive, so there is room for margin. Surely brother would manufacture custom cartridges for dell.

2) Compel Lexmark to make their printers Linux compatible. This is unlikely because Lexmark likes to be proprietary with drivers. For some reason it is difficult technologically for Lexmark to produce Linux drivers. There is no processor inside their printers. Brother, HP, Samsung, and others do not have this problem.

3) Sell Rebranded HP printers---- Not so good because HP makes all the money, and DELL directly fuels a competitor.

Have Ubuntu loaded machines on display at Dell Direct Stores

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by joeevil5000 05/31/07

If Dell is pushing for alternitve OS's to get in the mainstream, they should show them to thier customers in action. There should be at least one machine running Ubuntu at every Dell Direct Store kiosk. That way, dell sales reps can show it to customers, and compare it to Windows as to what it can do. Dell gets customers from computer savvy geeks, to the computer illiterate grandma, but thier core consumer is the computer illiterate. They are more than likely going to want to go with a Windows system, because it's what they have heard of, and known about for so many years, but, it will let them know that Windos is'nt the ONLY OS there is. Simply put, by displaying Ubuntu, people will get to know that it exists, and what it is, and spread the word. 4 Comments »

Dell recommends, Ubuntu, like did with Windows Vista!

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by oagostinho 05/29/07

I'll be very glad if Dell recommends Ubuntu too, like do with Windows Vista! Why not? Think about it! Ubuntu is the best open-source operating system out there for us!! See Ya!! Orlando Agostinho, Computer Engineer, Lisbon/Portugal 25 Comments »

Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vista™..." from any publication

Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07

It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self.

Somthing linke: "Dell supports muli-OS" would look good! Od: "Dell gives you the real choice" 61 Comments »

Extend offers like Linux pre-installation to the UK & Europe

Dell, Linux submitted by leftcase 05/03/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

First of all - well done Dell for listening to the people and making some brave decisions about the operating systems you provide your computers with.

Supplying pre-installed Linux (and XP instead of Vista for that matter) goes a good way towards giving customers what they want.

One thing that is slightly irritating however is that none of these offers are available outside of the US. Browsing through peoples comments, blogs and the Dell forums reveals that many people from the UK (for example), want the opportunity to get pre-installed Linux on their new Dell PCs.

The UK and Europe marketplace is not insignificant, and many people feel that you should extend your offer to this market too.

Please see Ideas In Action for additional information. Ubuntu Linux in other countries is coming soon.

15.4 size XPS system

XPS products, Laptops submitted by lilredfoxie 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I think theyre needs to be another 15.4" size XPS system, currently the XPS lineup has no middle ground, theres either the m1210 which is too small, or the m1710 which is too large ( I dont count the m2010, since its not really a laptop, its more of its own hybrid desktop/laptop comptuer thing) use the e1505 chassis, give it the cool XPS lights, and a D-dock connectior below
Check out the Idea in Action post for details about our new 15in system.

Ubuntu on the Latitude D630

Latitude products, Linux submitted by jmxz 05/24/07

Based on advice from dell_admin1 in this thread: http://ideastorm.com/article/show/67329 who writes

Re: no OS on other models - you might want to pick a model you'd want to see added to Dell's n-series, and then post an idea specifically saying that. (unless you already have) Just a thought.
it sounds like Dell is suggesting it's useful to submit IdeaStorm ideas on specific models.

But dell_admin1: no, I don't really want the D630 "added to the n-series", where it seems computers often cost more for the same hardware - I want Ubuntu as a choice on the standard D630 which seems to have excellent price/value right now. 1 Comment »

Dell Tablet PC

Laptops submitted by gautam 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.
Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.

Build a Linux Info Page on Dell.com

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by josmar52789 05/04/07

More Support for Ubuntu on Dell Please :)

Operating Systems submitted by mrubuntu 05/26/07

Hello, I'm an italian user and I've just bought an Inspiron 6400 that should arrive in the next two days. In Italy it's not possible to buy it with Ubuntu 7.04 installed, but I want it, so I started walking around Dell's site looking for a software to install in Ubuntu to make my Inspiron 6400 working properly, but I didn't find anything like this.
So this is the idea, why don't you create a kind of form where it's possible to submit the configuration of the notebook/desktop having back the ubuntu software needed to make it working properly?
Thanks for Listening 3 Comments »

Offer 32 bit OS and 64 bit OS on website

Dell Web Site submitted by nyyankees625 05/26/07

As a customer to have an option to whether have the computer come with a 32 bit operating system or 64 bit operating system would be great. I know you have to request it when you call into the Dell sales department, but the website does not give you an option for this. So give use an option as to whether to have the 32 bit OS or 64 bit OS. 2 Comments »

Integrated Smartcard Readers for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by jeremiah 06/06/07

Make laptops available with built-in smart card readers. Availability on Ubuntu laptops would be a must, especially since windows requires lots of 3rd party software for Smartcard support. Comment »
