OS Choice

For the last several months I have been in quest of “laptop” this is my first venture into laptop land and quite frankly, I find the total absence of OS choices appalling.

The only choices I have are XP or Vista, both of which are totally
unacceptable for my application, now this only leaves a third choice which is to pay for the OEM version of a bloated, insecure OS, enhance the bottom line and sales stats for an unresponsive, largely irresponsible soft ware publisher, allowing them to perpetuate the modern myth “there is only one real OS”.

This is also totally unacceptable.

Why not give the consumer the option of ordering a system minus OS or the ability to return backup disks, with the removed key sticker, if the product has not been activated or registered, mail a refund for the unwanted software.

This would certainly give you a real barometer on just what your clients want rather than forcing an unwanted product for them to blow off to data heaven and pay dearly for the “one size fits all” shrink wrapped mentality in an otherwise built to order world of laptops.

After doing some homework I really want a Dell laptop, but I refuse to support a publisher that conducts themselves in such a strong arm fashion as part of the deal. I don't like their product, don't want it, won't use it and will send it to data heaven on first power up.

Give me SuSe 10.3 or nothing!

I would rather give Novell $130.00 for a job well done than give 25 cents to MS. 8 Comments »

Consider the software used by Ubuntu BrainStorm to replace the SalesForce software powering IdeaStorm.

Ubuntu's BrainStorm seems to have similar capabilities to Dell's IdeaStorm. Notable differences are

1. BrainStorm has a search function that works very well; and a great Advanced Search that works even better. I imagine if IdeaStrom.

2. It feels much faster, though apparently having a *lot* more activity. Comments submitted 1 day ago have thousands of votes with roughly 100 comments. But every page I refresh there happens instantly.

3. I can provide attachments to ideas and link it to tickets in their support system.

4. It has a functioning "Report Duplicates" feature. 23 Comments »

Dell: Provide your customers a website in the community section to obtain OpenSource Software

Dell, you keep adding software to your systems to provide your customers with a baseline level of unusably from day one when their computer arrives, so you believe the sale of the OS is not enough to get the customer started or enough to make them productive.

Why not provide for your customer an avenue to become even more productive by helping them along through applications that will not cost them a red cent? The good karma and well being it would put Dell in are just too enormous to count!

Inspiron 15xx huge enourmous battery with 15+ hours on fullbright and full cpu utilization

I just bought a 1520 with a 9 cell battery. 3.5 hours just isn't long enough.

I honestly don't care about size or weight. The battery could extend downward with feet on it to prop up the notebook to promote better cooling. 36 cells would be just fine. The battery would have its own charger port that plugs into the exisiting charger port as a pass through.

2 GB of memory STANDARD

Dell should start putting 2GB of memory STANDARD on all its computers. Vista runs poorly with anything less than 2GB, and even Linux can sometimes be a little sluggish with only 1GB. Memory is CHEAP Dell, and in my experience it improves performance much more than a faster processor. 18 Comments »

Explain how long "shortly" is.

Last evening when trying to access the IdeaStorm Web site I instead received the following message:

"The system is down for
maintenance as of 16:38 PST.

It'll be back shortly."

or something similar. Could you please explain how much "shortly" is? It might be obvious to some, but some uncertainty does remain. Is "shortly" an hour? 15 minutes? 30 minutes? I understand that Dell cannot give an exact amount, but something like an estimate would be great. Thank you. 11 Comments »

Dell: Help your fallen Corporate Buddie Billy Gates, Create the Vista Computer!

Dell, your buddy and fellow corporate chum Billy Gates is taking a beating! The news releases on how they helped your other buddy Intel sell a few more chips when they released the "Technology" eater OS Vista and lowered its Spec requirements even though it would not run correctly on their older chipsets isn't helping either one! Of course Dell knew none of this, Dell is innocent, no way would Dell sell a computer that they themselves would know didn't meet the real world requirements of an OS they are pushing on its customers like air to an ex-smoker on a breathing machine.

So help a brother out (corporate chum's) and start only using the latest chipsets on all your products, allow for SLI/Crossfire with the latest Nvidia and ATI Graphics cards if not the new three and four card setups and add several more RAM slots to accommodate at least 16 Gigs, don't forget to allow for multiple core CPU's and multiple sockets (to allow for even more processing power), over clock the living daylights out of it too! Who cares if its hot and sounds like a 747 on take off! Its all about backing your corporate buddies out!

So drop everything you're working on and back the hand that feeds and produce the computer that can run Vista correctly! Well computers, looks like many of the so called "Capable" computers do not meet the specs (the real ones). 27 Comments »

“Retail” store with a slightly different approach. Make the store look like a Dell factory. Some imagination will be required! Not just pictures on the wall but a very authentic looking “computer building assembly line”. Sales people could provide information about the factory—for educational purposes—and information about buying a computer.

I WANT TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW THEY ARE MADE.

Why do this? Because it would be interesting!

There are two suggestions currently which I think could be combined.

I'd suggest Dell take a lesson from some tiny competitors and -expand- on them.

Perhaps leverage existing staff who support large accounts for more company contact with the public.

Possibly in cooperation with Staples, offer an actual Dell on-site presence to combine the thoughts of the following TWO ideas to generate greater interest in computing in general and in DELL as a result?!

More feedback from Dell on popular ideas

I would like to see more (official) feedback from Dell on popular ideas eg. +1000 ideas.
For example, many people have been requesting an LED backlit screen for the XPS M1530. Look on any forum where this model is being discussed and you will see people saying that they are holding off on purchasing until it becomes available (I'm one of them!) so it would be helpful to know what is happening.

Another example would be illuminated keyboards. Saying it is "partially implemented" doesn't really tell us anything. We know you have done that! If a popular idea is not practical or its implementation is problematic for whatever reason, communicate back so discussion can take place. This is how brainstorming works!

I also wonder how many good ideas are overlooked because Dell believe the cost would be too great for the product in question. Be upfront about your concerns regarding costs. For example, you may find that Inspiron/Vostro customers would not be prepared to pay extra for a premium screen and illuminated keyboard but XPS customers are. Post polls so that members can vote on these issues and provide you with accurate data. We are here to help so use us. 7 Comments »

Multitouch touchpads exclusively for laptops sold with linux

Since you insist on charging more for a laptop with free Linux pre-installed than with Expensive Microsoft Windows Vista pre-installed, You could at least throw in a multi-touch touchpad exclusively for linux laptops. It will justify the higher cost as long as you do it only on laptops that have linux preinstalled. Multitouch enthusiasts and the open source community will jump on this functionality and create rich innovative applications within a short time. It also provides a smaller (linux user only) test base to expirament with multitouch and create applications to speed up and test it's readiness for full on windows users.

Options in the Ubuntu XPS m1330

Okay, maybe I'm being ungrateful, but before I run off and place my order, I want to have a few more options. Why are the higher-end processors not available in the Ubuntu version of the m1330? What about the intel next-gen wireless chip? What about a fingerprint scanner? What about blu-ray (okay, that one's not in the windows version either, but still)? What about other colors than just black?

Allow LCD screen of a Laptop to be turned OFF - provide a power button.

I observed that we can save a lot of battery power by turning off the screen. But when would we like to do that ? Yes, when we want to just listen to something while not watching or working on our PC, for ex. listen to songs (use it like a music player) or just when we want to do some long s/w installation,/maintenance but still save batteries. In such cases we can turn could be able to turn off the screen to save power.

Let us leave the laptop plugged in for as long as we want without negatively affecting the battery.

My rule of thumb is if a battery goes down below an hour of laptop life it is useless . This usually happens within the first 8 months of owning a laptop for me.

If I'm using my laptop to surf the internet I will usually plug it in until it's full, then unplug it, then plug it in when it gets low, then unplug it again when it's full. This got so annoying that I eventually just left it plugged in and my battery now lasts 15 minutes with wifi off and the screen dimmed all the way down. There has to be a better way to manage laptop power than this. Let us leave the laptop plugged in for as long as we want without negatively affecting the battery. 5 Comments »

Prevent laptop overcharge

It seems like leaving the power cord plugged in too long decreases the capacity of the battery over time. There should be a switch or software setting to disconnect the battery form the power source when the battery is fully charged and reconnect it at a specified amount.

If you have it set to 80% then the battery would disconnect from the power cord until the battery got down to 80% then it would reconnect and charge the battery again. If you turned it off, the battery would stay connected to the power source as long as it is plugged in. 13 Comments »
