Next level of Ubuntu multimedia

Now, when Dell included in Ubuntu 7.10 comercial DVD playback and Adobe Flash player, is time to move and enhance this initiative to next level...
When Ubuntu 8.04 LTS will be released, ship it with pre-installed high quality multimedia codecs from Fluendo. "Complete Set of Playback Plugins" will move entire Ubuntu experience to whole new level with legal, properly licenced and fully functional playback of those media formats.
Maybe should Dell also cooperate, support or work together with this company and bring to us even more improved (and legaly licenced) codec pack for it own customized Ubuntu version and advertise this added value on Dell Homepage.
This will be something what will motivate me to buy Ubuntu Dell PC much more than some aditional year of support contract.

Graphics Cards + Screen Resolutions + RAM = The "Sweet Spot"
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by stufitexpander

I'm amalgamating a lot of other peoples' ideas here, but this is what I needed in a laptop and Dell didn't have it:
1)1680X1050 15.4in Matte Screen 2)Reasonably quick gaming graphics card (8600M or faster) 3) XP Pro 4) 3 Gigs of RAM (4 is overkill for me with 32-bit XP Pro) 5) Less than 1500 dollars with warranty included
People have posted all of these ideas seperately, but really, its all of them together which makes a computer worth buying for me, and I feel like, lot of other people, too. We all come on and vote for 1-5 in this list, but that doesn't mean Dell knows we want 1-5 in ONE computer.
My computer is used primarily for work; I'm a programmer (of sorts)/researcher/excel user who likes to play the occasional well reviewed game. I feel like there are a lot of people like me.
I don't mean to be rude, but Dell should take a look at www.powernotebooks.com if they think it can't be done. That kind of selection is more what I would call "customizing".
What ever happened to economies of scale?

1900x1200 XPS ONE

We need full HD on XPS ONE because it has to be one of the best computers in the business, plus it is an XPS which is supposed to mean somthing. Full HD would make it the best all in one computer out there. It also wouldn't hurt to have a 22 inch screen option.

XPS M2010 - The Mobile All-in-One (offer it on desktop section)
XPS products submitted by stormrider451

Hello there..
I have just recently looked at, for the first time, the beauty of a computer the XPS M2010 is. This is an amazing product DELL has on its hands with a ton of potential. Not only can this computer be a regular laptop, it can serve as a stationary all in one desktop when need be. The ability of the keyboard to dock into and out of the laptop is just brilliant. I propose that DELL starts to give this computer more propaganda as the: "Mobile All-in-One". How cool is that? This computer comes standard with a 20inch screen, which is just the same as the XPS One. Not to mention, it has better graphics card and the ability to make it 4GB of RAM which beats the XPS One. Even if you do not start this propaganda, at the very least, offer it on the desktop section where the current Dell XPS One is (not just under laptops). Or, make a single section under desktops for All-in-One PC's with the XPS One and this baby right here. I am SURE that a lot of people looking for desktops (especially All-in-One's) will consider this computer when they see that they can not only have a clean and tighty desktop but in the case that they want to take it to a meeting or what not, they can!!! Many people looking for desktops will NEVER look at the laptop section, never seeing this great product. So add it to the desktop section already! Add the ability to add a wireless mouse to all of them too (cheaper versions do not).
This computer won me over DELL! I wanted an XPS One when they got more powerful, but this computer gives me that RIGHT NOW and the versatility of mobility! Both my desktop and my laptop are comming of age and will have to replace them some day. This computer would offer me the possibility of replacing them both with one computer. I know this comp doesnt come cheap, but I would have to pay a whole lot more to get both a laptop and a desktop with the power this comp can bring.

Better integration between Linux and Windows on Dell Computers.
Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by guindog

It is interesting that the experience of using Linux on a Dell is more integrated with the rest of the products of the company.
I mean, it would be a point that would make the difference on the remainder of the competition if, for example, in a business meeting where there was a Dell, the exchange of information or execute applications is not an impediment, regardless of whether having computers with Windows or Linux. That is to install a demo, see a website with specific plugins and acquaintances, video codecs and sounds or document formats, it should not be an issue to try to discuss the quarterly balance sheet, conducting a video condeferencia, or see a presentation.
I do not claim an iLife (which pretty serious anyway), but if a CrossOver Office or Wine try to be much more integrated into the specifications for a Windows Vista pre-installed and supported by Dell. And so to see a movie, hear an audio file format. Ogg,. Mp3 or. Wma or whatsoever, and so on ...
I know that there are limits that can not be avoided (drivers?, dll?), But that the experience of using a Dell is not limited or marginalized by the operating system that one has wanted to choose.
Thanks.

Gracias.

Offer high end processors for XPS 1530 in India
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by pradeepbhargav

Hi,
Till end of Feb 2008, I was able to choose processors upto T7700, now since 1st March the top end processor available is only T7250.
I was waiting to buy XPS1530 with a hope that 2.5GHz Penryn processor would be offered. Instead of offering the penryn processors, they have even stopped providing option to choose processors above 2.0Ghz.
I feel that, there is no point in buying a XPS without a top end processor in it.
Please provide the option of selecting processors higher than T7250.
Regards, Pradeep

I think this is time for Dell to develop a software market place or a center that bring like a Dell's Recommendation OpenSource Software.

Take the whole anti-vista resistance thing and exploit it

Windows Vista is arguably (meaning there are people that dispute this) the WORST operating system since Millenium Edition. So keep loading all of the computers with XP until M$ doesn't allow the company to do so and after that start advertising Ubuntu 7.10 systems that are preloaded with lots of good freeware on them and maybe some non-freeware as well. This is a list of software that could be loaded along with the stuff that's included with Ubuntu. I think this would make Linux machines look just as good as (if not better) than Windows:
Default desktop environment: Gnome (included with Ubuntu) Other desktop environments: KDE, FluxBox,XPDE desktop environment (similar to XP's environment), Xfce, Enlightenment
Freeware games: Cube, Cube 2 (sauerbraten), Armagetron Advance, BZ Flag, Astro Menace, Assault Cube, Nexuiz, Alien Arena, Tremulous, Warsow, Legends(Tribes clone that ROCKS), Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, Neverball / Neverputt, Glest
Non-free software: Pioneer Linux Electricity (Windows Emulator)
Graphics: Kolour Paint

DELL Idea Storm Team - Each idea should be responded to.
IdeaStorm submitted by stormrider451
Mar 4
Hello there.. I realize this might have been posted before. But, it obviously has not worked to this point. So here it is.
I think the DELL IdeaStorm Team should try their best to reply to EVERY idea regardless of how unrealistic that idea is; not just most popular ideas. I can understand not posting to negative ideas or ideas that simply have been posted to screw around. Every positive idea should be commented on. Its not that hard to have someone go over every idea that has been posted in a day and write some sort of small message. It doesnt take much, just a simple message saying for example: "sorry but I think this idea is not going to happen soon". Or "sorry but we do not find this idea possible". Its simple things that really make the poster know that they are being heard at least. Many of us are here because we like DELL so much we would like to give them a hand with ideas that we might come up with. Of course, some ideas will be regarding things people want on a certain product they want to buy, but I think thats fine too. Take for example my case, I have three ideas so far posted and only one has been answered:
1) Answered: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10076698/XPS_One__More_Video_Power_on_X... 2) Not Answered: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10077288/XPS_One__Unecessary_Adobe_Elem... ** 3) Not Answered: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10077717/Dell_Ink_and_Printers__Sell_th... ***
If you go look at the one that is answered, you will see an example of what I am asking for, you can see there how the idea was answered swiftly and at least it gives me some sort of reply. Comments like these is what I am looking for. Not getting ideas answered makes me really not want to post anything else because I feel I am loosing my time trying to figure cool things that could help my favorite computer company. Dell, if you have this idea storm, lets do it the right way. Make your costumers feel welcomed and that they should keep trying. Is that so much to ask? I mean, I go over each idea posted every day in less than 10 min. Its doable.
Thanks!

Clarify your implemented and coming soon tags
IdeaStorm submitted by theideasman
Mar 4
When i see comments with the "implemented" or "coming soon" tags id like to know exactly when they are coming soon or when they were implemented so that i can see wether or not the ideas are available to the public yet. It could be as simple as putting a date next to the tag such as:
IMPLEMENTED 03/06/2008 COMING SOON 04/05/2008
Just something like that so we know when to expect them or when they became availabe to the public.
EDIT: Also be region specific so different regions know when to expect the idea to be available to the public. Dont just give an American date.

Upgradable graphics in the m1530!!! (no more soldered cards)
Gaming, XPS products submitted by theideasman
Mar 4
Im sick of my laptop graphics getting old and then finding that i need to buy an all new system. Cant the xps come with modular cards (mxm) that can be upgraded direct from dell if the consumer requests a graphics upgrade. Of course there will be a cost involved but surely it will be better than having to buy an entire new system!

8700m gt in m1530
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by theideasman

Alienware have done it and gone one step further (8800m) and they are owned by dell! So why dont dell do it too? Its a simple idea as the 8600m gt is getting a little old now. The 8700m gt seems like a logical answer. It would be nice to offer the upgrade soon as well while the card is still fairly new...

Make 64 bit Vista a standard OS option for all SMB laptops
Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by stewie
Mar 4
For some bizarre reason, the 64 bit Vista option for Small Business Laptops is not included in the standard OS options even though the machines are available w/ 4GB...
Even more strange.., the 64 bit option for small business does exist but it's hard to find and it's not possible to get in all configurations.
I'd like to see it available as apparently the OEM OS license is only for the specific version the unit comes with (32 bit or 64 bit) and cannot be upgraded.

How "new" are IdeaStorm ideas?
IdeaStorm submitted by bayusb

Dell should give feedback on just how "new" are the ideas posted in IdeaStorm. Dell has an internal IdeaStorm system for their employees. Why not give us some feedback on whether the ideas posted here are new and different from the ideas posted by Dell employees?

Dell, Try Home Automation
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by bsmmoney
Mar 4
Everyone's heard of the new Mycrosoft Sync. The same principle has been applied to homes. What if Dell got into Home Automation? Dell could make home servers, touch screens, and voice-activated controls for HVAC, Blinds, Lights, All sorts of media, etc. Think, you could start dinner by calling your oven! You could have a warm breakfast ready before you get downstairs. You'd save money on heating and air, and your lights would be on when you got home! This is a market unexplored by most computer companies and would give Dell more of an edge than a cell phone. If this was affordable and available to normal people, home automation could be a new craze, not just a cool idea.
