Living Room Entertainment PC

New Product Ideas submitted by tkalhar 06/01/07

Offer a living room media PC that has high-end video/audio (and include a DVI to HDMI cable) in a form factor that's appropriate to place in an entertainment center. Low-profile, sleek and with a front-display that indicates the "mode" the PC is in, acting as either a DVR, stereo tuner, DVD player or PC/Gaming system. Provide additional components that either "stack" or link up to the main unit, i.e. hard drive storage unit for media, a high-quality speaker base or surround sound speaker bar (Yamaha produces a great unit, could you partner?). Even eliminate the need for a monitor/TV and produce a small form-factor HD projector that stacks/links to the main unit as well. The system would come with a wireless keyboard/trackball/trackpad (Bluetooth?) and a remote for switching between media modes. Heck, why not even make the remote have a slide panel like the new cell phones do and have a hidden full-QWERTY mini keyboard so you only need the full-size keyboard for longer periods of use?

I did some design sketches (PDF file at http://www.mycuriouslife.com) for a case competition last year and would be more than willing to share them ... there just aren't enough nice looking PCs out there. The design I had in mind is round, just slightly larger than the Mac Mini, with curved side panels that can be swapped out to modify the overall look (i.e. faux wood panels, high gloss colors, metallics) and could add to your bottom line by being either add-on's or come as inexpensive mod kits and could be mass produced quite easily. The awful thing is that Sony's Vaio TP1 came out in January with a similar design. Sony doesn't, however, offer other components in the same form factor that literally connect directly to the base PC unit. 10 Comments »

HDMI Enabled HDTV PC Monitor hybrid

Monitors and Displays submitted by joeevil5000 06/02/07

With HDMI video cards on the horizon, Dell could possibly offer HDMI enabled monitors, with a configurable option of an HD tuner built in. Dell already offers component enabled monitors 24" and above, which is awesome. But, having HDMI, would future proof them, and a built in tuner would also be a plus. Yes most HDTV's support VGA, and DVI, put suck as PC monitors. Having a solution that would be capable of being it's own independent HDTV, and support high-end monitor resolutions would be a huge plus. Comment »

Sell without Keyboard

Desktops, Sales Strategies submitted by ispenguin 06/03/07

Default keyboard and mouse(cheapest) that dell provides are nothing but a trash (since I don't use it)

by eliminating default keyboard and mouse you should give a little benefit to the customor like $5 off. I know that currently you offer no keyboard option without any price incentives but I don't think it is a good idea since people tend to choose free stuff if it doesn't give any price difference and it is bad for environment and it is a waste of resources. 1 Comment »

Let's skip a generation on the 410

XPS products submitted by joeevil5000 06/03/07

With the next generation of a lot of Dell's models on the horizon (XPS 720 already released, and Dimension E530, and 531 on the way) That would mean that the next generation of the XPS 410 would be the 420. It would be the subject of a bit of ridicule from the "less mature" crowd. XPS 500, or 415 would be a better name, just to be PC

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college.

Demote an Idea should require a Comment

IdeaStorm submitted by s3indiana 04/03/07

When an idea is demoted a comment should be required to give the original poster a perspective that was missed. It doesn't take much research to note those that are demoting for the sake of demoting... 70 Comments »

Turn off USB boot in BIOS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by hollywood13 06/05/07

There is no reason that we have USB boot option enabled in BIOS. This causes no boot device available errors when customers have SD cards in left in the printer slot or media card reader. This error can occur just by having a usb printer attached without a media card in the slot. People that want to boot to a usb device usually know how to change this option. This could decrease unnecessary calls to tech support. 6 Comments »

out of the box -- let me return box for reuse

Environment submitted by howardnyc 02/17/07

issue: reduce -- reuse -- recycle

if you build the shipping box a little thicker, and provide a return address sticker many of us would be happy to return the box to you for reuse....

despite the added shipping charges, you would save money and demonstrate to the world you are indeed "lean 'n green" by reversing the ‘waste stream’

this would be especially true for those corporations purchasing ten (10) or fifty (50) or thousands (1000’s) of new computers all at the same time. . .

heck I could see an entire truckload of stuff getting picked up three days after being dropped off . . .

FYI: corporations in New York City are oft times zapped with special handling fees to dispose of boxes 16 Comments »

Bulk Shipping

Environment, Desktops and Laptops submitted by zgamer 06/05/07

This is in focus to purchasing multiple desktops and notebooks.

When purchasing systems from Dell we tend to purchase a large number (a couple hundred) systems once a year. Upon delivery I am amazed by the amount of waste produced.

IDEA: Bulk ship desktops where five systems are in one box or ten laptops per box. This would allow to cut down on the amount of packing material greatly.

On a side note when we have had systems arrive in this method there tends to be a far fewer chance of getting systems damaged in shipping :) 5 Comments »

Dont eliminate XP just yet

Operating Systems submitted by javaprog07 02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.
Check out the Idea in Action to find out more about Dell offering XP.
