IdeaStorm seems to be built on Ruby/Rails on Apache Linux - Tell us what SW you use, Dell.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 04/03/07

Interesting

http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http: me that www.IdeaStorm.com is running

Dell Computer Corporation 143.166.82.44 Linux Mongrel 1.0.1 28-Mar-2007

Last I heard, Mongrel was a Ruby infrastructure, and Linux is clearly Linux.
Seems odd for a company that "Recommends [whatever Microsoft tells you to]" on every page.

What are you using on IdeaStorm? Can you recommend that as well? 10 Comments »

Are You ACTIVELY AVOIDING WINDOWS VISTA?

Dell Really wants to keep You as a hardware customer, and not lose your business!

Let DELL know WHY:

1. Your Employer Banned Windows Vista.
2. Your Government Banned Windows Vista.
3. (1 & 2 are the same, Employer = The Government).
4. Incompatible with Important Software or Valuable Hardware.
5. Too expensive to upgrade, plus upgrade software and hardware.
6. Can't get it to load on my Commodore 64.
7. Other, and please tell Dell why you don't want Vista:

Switch completely over to AMD Processors for Dell computers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by squirekyle 04/04/07

You can buy a Intel processor for the same price as a amd processor, and the amd processor will be about 75% faster than the Intel processor, so dell could sell ceaper computers if they switched completely over, you can research yourself on Google and see that amd is faster, cheaper, and more reliable than intel 3 Comments »

Dell....Google, Apple, and The Internet!!

Dell submitted by oagostinho 04/04/07

Today and The Future, it's very important to think not about the computer itself, but the computers, users, and the Internet like one system.

In one way, that is google do at the moment, seeing by the Eye's Internet (Social Networks, You Tube, Google Talk, iGooglePhone (Maybe or MayBe Not), etc). And, Dell? What they want to go? Be a simple computer manufacturer? Or, may be the next enterprise in this new era?
And, what does it means?, what it is all about? "À LA APPLE WAY", may be, may be not.... I'm not GOD, and in a matter of fact, anybody else, but i'm convinced that the new Dell, have to be one enterprise that can changes and continues to innovate in others way that anybody cannot imagine yet.

For example: Why don't build the next Java or .NET language? Why don't participate in any project that help to find the next HIV vacinate? The next VoIP++?

Did you see? Going to be the next big thing...!!!

Super Sleek Ultra Sexy Dell Laptop

Laptops submitted by undoit 02/21/07

Having done tech support professionally over the past 7 years, I've gathered people's opinions of various computer brands.

I think the general opinion of Dell is that their laptops are boxy and unattractive. A lot of people are not interested in purchasing a Dell because they don't like the aesthetics and believe that the build quality is poor due to the outer appearance. I also think a lot of people don't care for the "dude" image.

Being a power user myself, I appreciate owning Dell laptops. My current Inspiron may not be as sleek as my MacBook, but I go for functionality over form. I like that my Dell laptops have been easy to upgrade, usually have the latest cutting-edge technology available, provide options for user input (dual pointing devices), come with a full install of Windows so I can wipe out all the junk that comes preloaded and have different screen options (resolution and glossy or matte) among other reasons.

I think Dell should focus on designing an ultra thin laptop with smooth lines. This would give users who value aesthetic appeal a very good reason to purchase a Dell laptop. 5 Comments »

Great Idea for Ultra Mobile Computer

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by snowbob230 02/18/07

A low cost quality UMC. I would love to have one, but the cost is way too high for me. If you could make a UMC for under 1 K that had a GPS Wireless and bluetooth I would be thrilled. 10 Comments »

reusable/replacable laptop screens

Environment, Laptops submitted by tomwright 04/01/07

Design laptop screens/monitors to be easily replacable and tranferable between PC's. This would ease repairs when needed and would also lower costs of new laptops by allowing someone to transfer a screen from an old laptop to a new one. This is a big reason why desktops are so cheap, you do not need to purchase a monitor with one as you do with every laptop.

So someone with an older Dell laptop could buy a new laptop, without a lid/screen, and move the entire lid/screen from the old one to the new one. While the current ones would not allow for that, a new design would. Either the entire lid could be moved or perhaps the screen could be inserted into the lid like a giant PCI card. That would allow for redisgn of the case and reuse of the LCD from old to new laptop. 2 Comments »

It is all about the keys (PKI)

Broadband and Mobility submitted by catalyst 04/01/07

The Internet much like nuclear weapons is too powerful to be controlled
by one government. Especially the US Government.
The battle is not Linux Vs Microsoft or Apple.
The battle is over PKI. (That is the point I have been trying to make.)
You have heard the mainstream media talk about .xxx TLD's.
You do not hear them talking about this.
SAIC does not want this! The business model I have discribed
at www.saic.tv prevents this orwellian intrusion, simply by it's very design.
I would invite engineers from outside the USA to study the data presented
in my article on OLPC. (Additionaly 5 or more global alpha servers operating
"indi"pendantly of government would keep everyone honest.)

(Here is the article.)
Slashdot and Cryptome report that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is demanding the master key for the DNS root zone - a demand that has other nations alarmed. With the master key, DHS would have control over the Internet, as Slashdot describes, quoting an "anonymous reader."

The key will play an important role in the new DNSSec security extension, because it will make spoofing IP-addresses impossible. By forcing the IANA [Internet Assigned Numbers Authority] to hand out a copy of the master key, the US government will be the only institution that is able to spoof IP addresses and be able to break into computers connected to the Internet without much effort. 10 Comments »

MultiCard reader on Laptops should include a CF card reader.

The Mulicard reader currently on DELL Inpsirons cannot read CF cards.

Pity, since many high-end cameras still use CF cards. 5 Comments »

Bring IT Back To US Shores

Service and Support submitted by 19rocketman67 03/02/07

It's quite obvious that even though Dell outsourced most of it's Service and Support it did no good to the bottom line as far as profits are concerned.
So let's bring Service and Support back to the US and make Dell the great company it use to be. 3 Comments »

Add GPS to Notebooks

Laptops submitted by andrewmilnermobile 02/28/07

Start integrating GPS into all Dell Notebooks. This would be a big incentive to buy a Dell because people wouldn't have to buy external GPS devices. This could be an option that is bundled with Microsoft Streets and Trips, or some other GPS software.

Also, you could try addidng support for GPS into anti-theft software to literally track down a theif. Have the laptop report its location whenever it has a connection to the internet after it has been reported stolen. 9 Comments »

my own look+feel

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by arohrmann 02/26/07

Isn't it easy to give users there own designed notebook cover or PC box?
No!

Look at Postbank in germany. There you can create your own Visa Card design.
Look at other notebook seller. They have many designs to make cool notebooks. Look at this page: http://www.cyber-system.de/

Isn't it cool :-) 1 Comment »

Where is the innovation?

Desktops and Laptops submitted by gothamtech 02/26/07

I've been upset at Dell for many, many months, so much so that I've moved away to a competitor for my personal use and for all of my clients. There are several reasons, but a BIG one is complete lack of innovation. Here are some innovations I would like to see:

Notebook Improvements:

- Backlit Keyboard (IF YOU DO ANYTHING AT ALL, DO THIS!!)

- Software Customizable hotkeys on keyboards

- Fingerprint scanner option

- Built in webcams

Desktop Improvements:

- Full line of chassis design options (For each Dell model there should be a choice of chasis, professionally designed, appealing, and well thought out like what comes out of Apple's design teams)

Bottom line: Dell's product roster is stale and monochromatic. You need to have dedicated design teams who think out of the box, are ahead of the curve, and consistently put new ideas out there. This (and better durability) is the only way you'll be able to compete going forward. JMHO 1 Comment »

Software Selector Instead of Preinstalled Packages

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Software submitted by rawrsome 02/26/07

When I buy a Dell, I would like to have a cd/dvd media that has all of my software instead of preinstalled on the system. The software selector would provide a graphical interface with a multitude of commercial and free software.

For example:

Internet Browser Selection

Click the Internet Browser you want to install.

< Firefox (information of product displayed, with screenshots, ratings)

< Opera

< Maxthon

< Netscape

< Optimal Desktop

< FineBrowser

< iNetAdvisor

< Browse3D

CD/DVD Burner Selection

Click the CD/DVD Burner you want to install.

< Nero (specs of product, screenshots, ratings, purchase price)

< Roxio

< CDBurnerXP Pro

< BurnQuick

< Cheetah

Anti-Virus Solutions

Click the Anti-Virus solution you want to install.

< NOD32 (info, screenshots, pricing, ratings)

< ClamAV

< Sophos

< Panda

< eTrust

< TrendMicro

< AVG

< Kasperksy

< Norton AV

< McAfee

This is just an example of the Software Selector. Obviously, there will be much more eye-candy and content but everyone should get this basic idea.

Say no to preinstalled software! Comment »

More laptops with a stick mouse.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by arthurdent3 02/26/07

I noticed the trend of all laptops are moving away from the stick mouse and going strictly with a pad.

I for one cannot live with out a stick mouse and I find the pad most annoying.

Please keep these as an option for your consumer laptops also, instead of just the business laptops.

I have had many dell laptops in the past and now I am using my first IBM just because of the stick mouse issue.

Since you still offer it on the business models why not at lease offer it up as an option on the consumer models.

Even better how about a full size keyboard with a stick mouse integrated into it. 4 Comments »

Pre-install Google Pack

Software submitted by wulf 02/26/07

I think there would be a significant benefit to users if Dell PCs came with Google Pack pre-installed.

The software included (by default) with Google Pack is: Google Earth, Google Desktop (which is already included on Dell PCs), Picasa, Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer (also already included with Dell PCs), Google Pack Screensaver, Mozilla Firefox with Google Toolbar, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Norton AntiVirus (which I believe is also installed on all new Dell PCs, although I can't find a reference) and Adobe Reader. Google Talk, Google Video Player, RealPlayer, GalleryPlayer HD Images and Skype are optional.

Not only will the unified update system make it easier for users to update Google Desktop and the Google Toolbar for IE, which are already pre-installed on Dell PCs, it will provide other great software (such as Mozilla Firefox, which has already been suggested at this site by thousands of users) to improve the user experience. 5 Comments »
