Reduce the size/weight of the power adapter

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by yagogak 2 days ago

Why the Dell power adapter are so big and heavy ? Specially for the M90 and dell XPS 17. Laptop are designed for mobility, the power adapter should be small and light. Apple do small adapter, i think Dell can do that.

And why the pictures of a laptop on the website never show the power adapter ? 3 Comments »

Provide the choice of whether to have software and driver CDs shipped with equipment

Service and Support, Software submitted by bbrereton 2 days ago

When ordering equipment from Dell, the consumer should be given the choice of whether they need the accompanying driver or software CDs, and manuals. I currently have multiple copies of Roxio, Cyperlink Power DVD, Dell Monitor, etc. I also get a Dell Computer and Monitor product guide with each machine. This is such a waste of paper and money. If Dell is striving to go "green" this would be one way of making a difference. In addition, I would like to ship Dell any unused CDs so they can re-deploy them, but according to my Dell representative there currently is no procedure in place to do so. 2 Comments »

Trade Ability...?

Environment, Service and Support submitted by infinitelink Aug 4

Dell is amazing for having post-warranty repair service; I am considering using this on a Gen 1 XPS; however I also know about the clogging problems those systems had with dust (and the design flaws), and I never did get to use it without having to lift it even more from a surface for air intake.

This got me thinking...if Dell is able to offer repair services for older machines, why not recycle reusable components and also use it to repair "problem" machines that have brought Dell a lot of flack? Particularly, though, I mean in that if a part can be put into another machine which avoids those problems, is compatible, while allowing the switch (and so you wouldn't have to keep old parts stored) then why not?

Barring cost, etc. the basic premise is that a customer sends-in a machine for repair, but paying extra, Dell basically send them a new machine...utilizing their old parts as far as possible (Hard Drive, Ram, Screen, touch-stick and pads) to mitigate the cost: something of a hybrid between a repair service and a new-purchase service.

You guys are pretty intelligent: so if this could in some way be possible, let me know: school is coming up and I have a magnificent old XPS (the screen was great, DVD/CD+/-RW was great, etc.) that is dead either because of overheating issues that nobody would ever fix, or possibly (according to a lot of users) an sensitized sensor that might be killing the machine (rather than what techs have been thinking: motherboards). I never could get decent help--or even my on-site warranty to be honored; but I thought of this and I think it's a way for Dell to not only deflect some past criticism, but also create a new sort of service, that is of course, if it's viable and possible: I'm hoping something like it would be greatly beneficial to both Dell and the customer.

Here's to success! : ) 1 Comment »

Always prefer DEDICATED Graphics Card Laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by it-professional Jul 30

If you are buying new laptop for Home or Office I suggest you to buy laptop with dedicated graphics card so that you can run Windows Vista smoothly as well as you can do Graphics work as well as playing games too... If you buy Inspirion 1525 please request for dedicated graphics card 1st...
LAPTOP without Dedicated Graphics card is worthless and meaningless if you want to use it for Study or Project work... as well as also I recommended for 15.4" rather than 14" or 17"
Thanks...All the Best

Make ubuntu version of laptop cheaper than Vista version

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by frz Jul 29

Hi,

I have tested the price of the Inspiron 1525 (in Chile) and the Ubuntu version (1525N) with the same Configuration. The result was disapointing.

1525 (Vista): $283.813 CLP
1525N (Ubuntu): $329.839 CLP

Why Vista is cheaper than Ubuntu? 2 Comments »

Pay Attention To Our Ideas!

IdeaStorm, Software submitted by aikiwolfie Jul 29

Using the new "Top Ideas" feature I tracked all the top rated ideas from the highest voted to 0 points. From page 1 to page 400. On every single page there were a healthy number of ideas relating to Linux, Ubuntu, OpenOffice.org, Firefox and free open source software in general.

The highest voted Linux/FOSS idea had 151870 points and the lowest had 9 points. I'm sure there are other with negative votes in the remaining 79 pages. But most of those ideas were about Microsoft products. Windows XP, Vista, Microsoft Works and Office. The remainder were hardware related, things Dell just can't do or non-idea threads.

Sure this must tell Dell something about the demand for free open source software on Dell PCs? The highest voted idea of all time here on IdeaStorm is Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot with 151870 points. In fact the entire first page is all about Linux, FOSS and no trial ware. That theme continues all the way through IdeaStorm to page 400.

So when we ask for more Linux support and better FOSS support please don't fob us off with the old "supply and demand" excuse. There is plenty of demand amongst the Dell consumer base to warrant treating Ubuntu as an equal to Windows.

  1. Please put Ubuntu in the OS list and let people make a proper informed choice.

  2. Please let people deselect pre-installed software they do not want. Including the OS.

  3. Allow people to buy bare hardware.

  4. Give us a choice of web browser, e-mail client and office productivity software beyond Microsoft!

We were told if we voted for it, we would get it!

Dell: improve customer CHOICE - urge Ubuntu to include MULTIPLE desktops!

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by phubert Jul 29

"Ubuntu uses Gnome by default.

I think installing KDE and Ubuntu and XFCE and Enlightenment at the same time and

...allowing the user to choose their own would truly show the power of Linux."

Why have Kubuntu when ONE release with all these desktops would provide BETTER choice? 10 Comments »

Dust Filter

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by phooku Jul 29

I am really impressed by my new XPS 630. But the wide open grill in the front, while great for cooling, does little to prevent hair, dust and lint from clogging the internal heat sinks. I wish Dell would sell a removable dust filter for both new and old XPS desktops. 2 Comments »

Avoid all types of trialware software and remember that customers pay for YOUR HARDWARE not to watch COMMERCIALS. 16 Comments »

Avoid FOXCONN motherboards in later models

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by tom66 Jul 27

Foxconn, a major manufacturer of motherboards, has switched to not support Linux by feeding it bogus data:

if(linux) send(*****)

This is entirely non-competitive only allowing Windows OSes. Some people like to install Linux on their DELLs and they are being deliberately censored.

Try to avoid Foxconn motherboards, or, if impossible, avoid the BIOS versions with this 'feature'. 13 Comments »

OpenSolaris 2008.11 PreInstalled.

New Product Ideas, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by evocallaghan Jul 26

"Why use the OpenSolaris OS you ask? It's pretty simple, you'll find it full of unique features like the new Image Packaging System (IPS), ZFS as the default filesystem, DTrace enabled packages for extreme observability and performance tuning, and many many more. See OpenSolaris datasheet for more details. We think you'll be quite happy you came by to take a look!"

Many developers are on the move these days and OpenSolaris is a great platform to use over Linux.
More info here : http://www.opensolaris.com/

Could Dell provide a model of a Desktop Workstation and a Laptop Workstation replacement that supports OpenSolaris out the box with it preloaded as a option.
I am sure Sun would be willing to help.

Thanks! 7 Comments »

Larger font size for entry of comments, etc.

IdeaStorm submitted by j_hallgren Jul 23

If there is a way to make the font size large enough so a visually impaired user can select what works best for them, I've been unable to locate it thus far! Changing the "Size" in IE6 doesn't appear to have any effect, and I'm really having trouble seeing such a tiny font when entering comments.

The size used to display existing comments is fine for me, but I'm having eye problems now and this minisule font is way too hard to read while I'm typing, ok? 14 Comments »

Give all N models the same hardware customization options as the identical non-N options

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by laptoplinux Jul 19

Why is it that the hardware customization options on N models are not identical to the non-N models. For example, the Inspiron 530 and the 530N. The 530 has an option for a wireless internet card. The 530N does not. There are other discrepancies between what is offered on the 530 and what is no offered on the 530N. These are the exact same machines. Same case. Same processor options. Same memory options. Same hard drive options. Yet somethings are left out of the 530N. Why is it this way? Why can they be just as easily on the 530N as well? Don't they come of the same or similar enough assembly line? 4 Comments »

Make the FreeDOS operating system option available on your webpage

Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by laptoplinux Jul 15

After going through several phone calls with sales associates that vehemently refused my request of either no Microsoft OS preloaded on a computer or a refund for the unused Vista license as granted in the Vista EULA, I eventually came to find out that some Dell models can be ordered with the FreeDOS operating system preloaded, but that option is not publicized in any way, and it can only be done through a phone order. For the models for which FreeDOS is an option, why not make that known on the website. Perhaps somewhere easily accessible you could post a listing of the models that can be preloaded with FreeDOS, and then that can show up under the choice of operating system when customizing the computer.

Most people ordering a computer with FreeDOS intend to replace that with the operating system of their choice once the machine arrives, but Dell doesn't have to provide software support for every conceivable OS that might be loaded on the machine, and they can state that explicitly and very clearly on the site as well. This removes any further obligations on Dell's part. If necessary, Dell can even add something on the customization page to explain to the buyer what the No-OS option entails so that a buyer does not inadvertently choose that option. (But please *please* make the explanation a neutral statement of facts and not a big bold "DELL RECOMMENDS WINDOWS VISTA!!!!!" advertisement like the rest of the website)

(As an aside, while neither software nor hardware support from Dell is necessary with these models, I suggest that it would be a wise course of action for Dell to lean toward hardware configurations of FreeDOS models that are compatible with Linux, since that will most likely be the OS that will ultimately reside on the machines. Again, Dell would not be obligated to such a course of action, but people looking to buy new computers without Microsoft's OS usually do their research and know which vendors/models are friendly and which are not. These types of customers are well informed and usually chained to no vendor, but they can also be fiercely loyal to a vendor that sincerely listens. Again, just an aside.) 15 Comments »
