Recently, I bought a Dell computer and got a 725 Printer with it for free. I found out that there is only one cartridge in it for both black and colour printing. Now after some printing my prints turn from black into brown into red. I also have to buy a new (color) cartridge very often. Of course these cartridges are only for sale at Dell. I do not like to be locked in!
1. Please Dell, if you give me something for free, give something good. Give a quality printer or give me just a cheaper computer.
2. Please, do not sell or include printers with only one cartridge for both colour and black/white printing.
3. Finally, also start selling printers with standard cartridges, that you can buy anywhere. Give us freedom of choice!

Keyboard with no Windows logo

It would be nice to have a keyboard without Windows logos, especially for those that use other operating environments than Microsoft Windows.
There would be several alternatives to have a Windows' logo on the "Super" key, including:
- having a Dell logo instead;
- having a custom key (maybe less cost-effective?);
- having a key with no logo, and perhaps several stickers with Windows, KDE, GNOME logos, Tux, etc.;
- having some other nice icon;
- ...
Desktop keyboards, which have two Windows logo keys, offer even more chances for alternatives.

Affordability and Durability for Student Laptop Initiative

If our district was to even consider a 1:1 student to computer ratio, we would need something much more affordable than what is out there now. Money could be saved by cutting storage space, video quality, and more. What our students generally need at their desks is the ability to surf the net and work in an "office" suite. Advanced projects can be done in our more robust labs.
Also, a laptop initiative is no good if in-house support increases 10-fold. These have to be durable. If they fall off a desk, they have to keep working. Replacement batteries need to be less expensive or an extra battery should come with each purchase.

Please stop including so many peices of "trial software" in new machines. I didn't ask for any of that stuff, and I don't want any of that stuff.
When I buy a computer with vista or XP that is ALL I want. I don't want a thirty-day version of AOL, or a bunch of stupid cheap games or 30-days of macafee or 30 days of MS office or any of all that other garbage that is always installed. Its a real hassel to either figure out how to uninstall everything, or reinstall the OS from scratch. i shouldn't have to do that, I shouldn't be forced to get software I don't want.
You could have an option to purchase a machine with ONLY the OS and your hardware drivers installed and nothing else. (I'd be willing to pay an extra 5 or 10 bucks to be saved the hassel of trying to clean all that garbage software off of a brand new machine, and that would help offset the loss of the money all those companies pay you to install thier garbage on all your machines)

Laptop design is an important factor for customer appreciation, even geeks dislike ugly looks.
Some ideas:
- pink interchangeable cover and wrist pad/keyboard... for a girlie look
- aluminum or any other light alloy cases... for execs
- black resistant plastic... for No-logo adopters
- Brown case, with Nautilus stripes... for Ubuntu freaks
- Orange stripes... for, you name it
etc...
Would you like a car brand, where cars come only in white color? Would like a car with a black interior which turns grayish when using the seats, just because the paint doesn't last?
Use colors in the plastic, not painted plastic... use colors, not only grey and black outfits.
Throw out all the stickers... Make your products to be THE most loved product anybody wants to own, inspire yourself from the best mobile phone producers (i.e. Nokia for example), which manages to sell the same product several times just because they came out with a fashionable look... People love displaying their phones on a table, what about a laptop?

Notebooks can now come with support for 3G Data services integrated into the machine. These though are restricted to just one network operator.
Please allow the end user to chose which operator they want to supply their 3G data services. This shouldn't be too hard to do - just leave an empty SIM slot on the notebook and let the user pop in the appropriate network SIM (Dell should not be acting to restrict consumer choice as to which network operator they use).

Dell became a top company by providing choice and customer service to a customer that wasn't available at the time but has since fallen behind the pack in these areas. Needing a translator when calling customer support is unnacceptable and other companies are rapidly passing Dell in technology advancements. While this site is a good start, many things need to be changed for Dell to become the market leader again.
1. Customer support needs to be in well spoken English and with employees who are allowed to do more than just read from a script. If they are speaking with a computer savvy customer the rep should be allowed to deviate from the script as long as they don't go outside the relm of normal policy.
2. Better options: Other companies offer high end components in small computers but Dell only supplies intel video processors in its 14" laptop. Dell needs to allow customers to get the size computer they need but with options from low cost through the high end so they can get a computer that is "Purely you".
3. Less forced options: I hate that I am paying for and XPS with internet security when I don't need it because I already have a subsciption that will transfer over or AOL is installed when I know I don't need it. They need to add an option of none of the above to all the added software sections.
4. Better pricing: Why is it over $200 to upgrade from 1 GB of 533 MHZ ram to 2 GB of 677 MHZ RAM? I can go to Crucial.com and get the 2GB 677MHZ kit for under $200. Upgrading with Dell after you own is even worse at over $300 this is crazy.
5. Custom Dell website: Customers want to feel special why not make a MYDELL website that when you log in you get a site designed the way you want it. If you aren't interested in the small business site it gets removed, you don't like to go thru the accessories sections when customizing a system so you don't see that section. Click on customer support and a list of your computer pops up asking which one you need help with and only shows the options for that system.
6. Customer loyalty rewards: I have bought 6 Dell systems over the last few years, why can't I get better customer service or pricing due to my loyalty to the company?

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium.

Definition
A solid state drive is primarily a data storage device, for use in computing applications that traditionally use a hard disk drive.
A solid state drive is based on non-volatile memory instead of the spinning platter and mechanical-magnetic head found in a conventional hard disk drive. With no moving parts, a solid state drive eliminates seek time, latency and other electro-mechanical delays and failures associated with a conventional hard disk drive.
Advantages
* Faster startup - Since no spin-up required.
* Faster read time – In some cases, twice or more than that of the fastest hard drives.
* Low read and write latency (seek) time, hundreds of times faster than a mechanical disk.
* Faster boot and application launch time - Result of the faster read and especially seek time. But only if application already resides in flash and is more dependent on read speed than other issues, eg. OS bootup that detects devices will not be significantly sped up even with faster seeks & reads.
* Lower power consumption and heat production - no mechanical parts results in less power consumption.
* No noise - Lack of mechanical parts makes the SSD completely silent.
* Better mechanical reliability - Lack of mechanical parts results in less wear and tear. High level of ability to endure extreme shock, vibration and temperatures, which apply to laptops and other mobile devices, or when transported.
* Security - allowing a very quick "wipe" of all data stored.
* Deterministic performance - unlike mechanical hard drives, performance of SSDs is constant and deterministic across the entire storage. "Seek" time is constant, and performance does not deteriorate as the media fills up (See: Fragmentation).
* Lower weight and (depending upon type) size
* Faster than conventional disks on random I/O

Remove metallic Windows sticker

The unremovable metallic "Vista capable" or "Designed for XP" sticker serves no purpose as soon as the laptop is in use by the end-user. Dell should design its notebooks to be sleek, stylish and simple -- and a permanent stickers is the exact opposite. This is (in part) why Apple sells the most stylish laptops, and why the one you buy is never as nice as the one you see in the promotional-pictures (no stickers!)
Replace the metallic sticker with an easily removable one !!! Dell should be large enough to stand up to Microsoft (who no doubt enforces the metal stickers).

All Discs Included (this means everything -- all software discs -- OS/Security software/etc., and all driver discs -- this means Windows or Linux drivers or both, whatever applies -- add $0)
Other options (OS disc only, all software discs only, driver discs only, etc. -- add $0)
For some computers, Dell does not include the reinstallation discs. Even if Dell offers them, Dell charges extra for us to get them. In fact, the only time I seen reinstallation discs being offered without charge were for Dell XPS desktops with the flashy lights -- that is, the Dell XPS 600, 700, and 710 systems, for those ware the only systems to offer operating system options like "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center WITH REINSTALLATION CD".
Also, most of the time when software reinstallation discs are not included, driver reinstallation discs (such as XPS flashy lights, as well as printers and monitors) are not included either. Therefore, don't just include the software reinstallation discs -- include as well the Windows/Linux drivers for the hardware (depending on the OS purchased with the computer, if any, which in turn depends on the user's preferences).
Besides, Microsoft as well as ALL software companies include the discs when you get the software seperately, so why can't Dell do the same when the software is preinstalled...?
Customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media.

Dont eliminate XP just yet

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.
