Graphics Tablet PC
Desktops and Laptops submitted by ozzimundi

An extremely obvious market for Tablet PCs are designers and artists! I am pining for a Tablet PC with a decent graphics card and greater pen pressure sensitivity and accuracy than what is currently available on the market. To be able to draw directly on the image and fully utilize the effects of software like Corel Painter... (or even to be able to play games on a Tablet like an extra-large Nintendo DS would be pretty neat.)
I don't understand why no one seems to be appealing to this market - is the technology not small enough to work within the confines of a decently sized laptop? That's my theory as to why Apple hasn't done this already...

Pure web browser
Software submitted by hoggy
04/03/07
With more and more sophisticated applications available online, we're spending less and less time using local applications and the features of the operating system.
Mobile phones have very capable web browsers, without expensive and troublesome hard drives, cd drives, graphics cards - why should they have all the fun?
Surely it's time for a cheap browser, with a tiny form factor, or better still embedded in an LCD display.
Would save lots of space, energy, and maintenance

Compatiblity
Linux, Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by omaha
02/20/07
Make all Dell pc's linux and vista compatible. Make all Dell printers and xtras linux/mac/vista compatible. If components or systems doesn't work with both/all, dont sell it.
Then Dell will be a major force in compatiblity progress - it will sell like danish pastry!
Avoid preinstalled software. ( Some - like Norton 2007 is a nightmare to get rid of)
Provide a more or less universal DVD with all optional software. When customer inserts the DVD - Auto check it by using eg serial number - grey out what the customer didn't buy. The rest is a customer's CHOICE.

Get Microsoft to pay you A LOT to stay away from Linux - after all they paid Sun billions
Dell, Linux submitted by jmxz
03/14/07
Before doing all the Linux ideas here, perhaps check with Microsoft to see how much they will pay you not to.
And yes, Microsoft almost certainly will pay.
Dell is probably the biggest Vista reseller in the world - and the only significant one still totally loyal to Microsoft (HP's pretty excited about Linux right now) - so if Microsoft wants Vista to succeed, they need Dell far more than Dell needs Vista (especially since even your Windows users seem to prefer XP).
With that negotiating power I figure you could get way more from Microsoft than the $2 billion dollars they gave Sun in their 2004 PR war against Linux http://news.com.com/Sun+and+Microsoft+Friend+and+foe/2009-1014_3-5184266.html and they gave Novell a third of a billion dollars to help spread FUD http://news.com.com/2100-1014_3-6133361.html< Dell's more important to Microsoft than Sun and Novell put together - so surely they should give you guys at least the $2.3 billion they gave your competitors.
As a Dell customer, of course I want you to provide Linux -- but as a Dell shareholder, please see if you can get billions of dollars from Microsoft first.

Another update on your Linux progess
Inspiron products, Linux, Small Business submitted by jmxz
04/09/07
I've been checking IdeaStorm and http://direct2dell.com/ daily waiting for information on your progress on Linux laptops - especially a higher-end home or small-business laptop.
I notice that on http://direct2dell.com/ you've given many updates on some of the other idea storm ideas (Vista driver issues; and resuming XP shipments) -- but no updates for quite some time on your Linux Laptop progress.
I'm ready to buy a new laptop now - and the only OS's I'm considering are MacOS and Linux.
If you can say your Linux Inspirons for Home or Small Business will be coming in a couple weeks I'd be happy to wait for you because I've been happy with Dells in the past (both desktops long ago and Linux servers recently).

Ultra-Ultra-Ultra Portable Computer
Broadband and Mobility submitted by ty1323

Ok... you need to know the time, you need to know where you are, you want to know whether there is wi-fi about, and maybe you want to look cool like the guys in a spy movie? Eh? Go the next level of ultra portable! Dell should begin development of a wrist-watch computer that can do all of the above and whatever else Dell could imagine into it. This could be big in the very near future. Just... imagine... how cool... you would look... talking to someone through bluetooth... by you watch. Oh yea.

Reduce Reuse Recycle ...
Environment submitted by rkielty
04/12/07
Provide a "case-platform" that will allow customers to upgrade internal components as newer hardware becomes available. The scenario is this, customer buys a PC, over time new hardware becomes available on the market, customer returns PC case to have a "guts upgrade", Dell manufacturing does the upgrade reusing the case. Advantage to Dell, keeping the customers you got cheaper than getting new ones. Advantage to customers, keep costs down. Customers feel that their investment is "future proofed" to a degree. Advantage to the environment, less waste. Old components could be forwarded on to charitable reuse or appropriate recycling.

DELL LiveCD/DVD == UBUNTU 6.10 + BERYL
Linux, Simplify IT submitted by ruddykins
02/26/07
Alright. Checkit out Dell. You have a REAL chance to shine here...
UBUNTU 6.10 + BERYL == aka LINUX VISTA (via LiveCD/DVD - HD install option)
--Eyecandy
--Eyecandy
--Eyecandy
--Test Drive / Demo
--Preinstall environment
--Diagnostic environment (basic/detailed)
--Dell "customer contact point" (where is Dell at 3am?)
DETAILS
--This would provide for immediate connectivity / useabiility out of the box (no driver headaches)
--Test Drive / Demo (maybe simple/full)
--Preinstall environment = users can try out whatever they want using ISOs preloaded on the HD - quick links on the Ubuntu desktop to allow single click installs..."Download and install..." or... "Keep Windows XP" or "Dualboot"
--Diagnostic environment: LiveCD boots & runs Dells custom diagnostics on the hardware: all good popup OR problem EASILY and QUICKLY found (with SOLUTIONS for the user: call hotline...etc.)
--The CD would remain a platform "key" to easily boot into the Ubuntu environment to access NTFS partitions / files on HD so WHEN the existing WIndows install gets hosed, the user can still have a "backup environment"
--Wizard driven "what's wrong: hardware, software? -- Os or application -- ??" OR "type in the error message"
You get the idea.

Please give buyer the option to save money and deliver a software license free product. If DELL hardware is Linux compatible, users can install their own operation system...
At the moment it's not so easy to use DELL notebooks and PC with regular Linux distributions like Debian or Ubuntu, Red Hat ...

Technical manuals
Service and Support submitted by macka
03/14/07
Release technical manuals for all your products, both business and consumer.
Specifically, publish the real capabilities of laptops. It would be much simpler if we could answer questions such as those below without pulling apart laptops just to find manufacturers part numbers:
* Can I swap out my Core Duo processor in my Inspiron 9x00 with a Core 2 Duo (post-delivery)? * What time of memory do I need? * Can my DVD player read dual-layer disks? * Is my hard disk SATA or PATA? * Do I have a spare memory port? * Can I add a bluetooth card? * Do I have a free mini-PCI slot?

A Student Laptop
Education, Linux, Laptops submitted by chentefox
02/22/07
It would be great if Dell create a "Student Laptop". A basic and cheap system with Linux, OpenOffice, Firefox, WiFi or LAN (for Internet on the campus), and a long-life battery.
Like this computer is not for playing games, edit video or "high-level software" it doesn't need too much ram or a high-speed procesor, this laptop could be cheap; it could be just for edit/create/view documents, navigate on internet and maybe watch movies.

Alternate approach to increase Axim's longevity - community support
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by malevolent
04/26/07 **REVIEWED**
I have seen countless threads and editorials concerning Dell’s recent decision regarding their direction for the Axim: nowhere. I am making one (almost certain) assumption based on my development experience, that even makes this idea possible. I am assuming there are software tools and unpublished functionality targeted solely for the Axim and its Dell developers.
If support is indeed being dropped for the Axim (to some simply meaning, no WM6) then contribute / host a Dell-approved site that allows would-be developers / hackers / porters easy access to information and tools giving us open source developers and the community a jump start to taking over the needs of the Axim user base thus allowing Axim users to not feel totally abandoned by your company.
I understand the business world and can appreciate the fact that perhaps the Axim was not doing your bottom line any justice, but seeing as the Axim went from seemingly a bright future to being a product that is discontinued all in the time between making and receiving my order, I cannot help but feel a little cheated. The simple fact is that despite the power, potential, and possibilities of the Axim line, they would totally go untapped if Dell does not provide some kind of attempt to ensure its survival. I know it would feel good to the Axim team if they saw their product prosper and grow beyond what it has.
I would like someone from Dell to make some kind of statement regarding this, because despite the fact that I love the Axim, not to mention the financial investment I have made, I will need to find another alternative. I am a developer and developing for the MS WM6 emulator is just not the same.

moderation and voting against
IdeaStorm submitted by goomoo
03/09/07
This site needs to be moderated desperately. Users don't give a darn what category their ideas are in, so long as the reach the top. In every category, there's someone screaming about how they want their particular flavor of linux preinstalled and supported or some other nonsense that's completely unrelated to the category. Which brings me to the second part of my idea, and why i'm posting it in the IDEASTORM category, cause my idea is actually about the IdeaStorm site!
I would love to be able to vote against ideas. Not really to take points away from an idea, but an additional score of "voted against". I find a lot of ideas being a wasted effort. Being able to vote against ideas will give Dell more of a focus. Currently the only way to show Dell your opinion is to leave a comment on that item, but if that idea gets lots of votes, I'm sure someone will just glaze over the fact that there's actually lots of comments against the idea.
For example, there's certainly discussion about AMD vs Intel. At this point people who like Intel really don't have many complaints and therefor no reason to voice opinions on the matter. I noticed there are a couple ideas to bring more AMD processors into the Dell line. Without voting against, Dell could fill their whole line with AMD processors and watch their sales plummet. Then some genius would say "Sales plummeted? But that's what the customers asked for." Well not all of us. We're lazy customers and without an easy way to vote that "I think this is a bad idea, or a wasted effort, or otherwise shouldn't be done" we're not going to say anything because we probably like things the way they are already. The simple fact that there is such a site as Ideastorm should prove that Dell has a pretty successful formula already.
There's an idea, how about "Keep up the good work Dell!"
