Correct Sigmatel audio drivers "Stereo Mix"
Service and Support submitted by komaramusic

My last Dell computer upgrade Purchase of an Dimension E310 has some sort of sigmatel Audio on the Intel motherboard with the "Stereo Mix" recording feature turned off. More info by Google'ing "Dell Sigmatel Stereo Mix".
Whether this was done with hardware or software drivers, I cannot say. But my 4 previous Dell computers all had "Stereo Mix", and as it is required in Audio software recording, and probably costs more to turn off than leave on.
If something like this is going to be "disabled" that should be noted in advance.
I am not going to detail the horrendous Technical Support nightmare that followed from India. One of many wonderful ideas was to 'plug in the speakers'... enough said.
So now I am buying the extra sound card that will (one can only hope) correct this. Though such a purchase was not required for the 4 previous Dell computers. Let's also note that Dell tech support would not mention even one time, after repeated requests. that the new Soundcard would solve this. So I paid more and bought a better card... one still must hope. It arrives next week.
But I'm on my own, oh except for all those other people out there with the same problem... wish me luck.

Improve the Idea Process on IdeaStorm
Dell, IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961

The current way this site works lacks proper feedback and process to show the customer that their ideas are important to Dell. The process also does not allow the ideas to gain proper exposure from visitors that is needed to propel the ideas to the popular ideas front page. Here are some suggestions for improvement.
1. All ideas should be read by a Dell representative and tagged as acknowledged within 3 days of being posted. I know this will be difficult on old ideas but if you go through and read them you will spot lots of duplicates to merge in the process.
2. Every time Dell has a meeting to discuss the top ideas they should change the tag to appropriately identify Dell's reaction to the idea. Currently there are several ideas on the front page without a status tag that should have been discussed by Dell already.
3. When users visit the site they should be taken to the recent ideas page to give those ideas more visability. I'm sure that Dell's own research shows that most users only visit the first page or two of the popular ideas tab which is unfair to all the other ideas submitted.
4. Don't just delete ideas and send off an email to the poster, allow them to defend themselves first. While it only takes a minute to read an idea, some users have spent a lot of time creating it. Dell should ask for clarification or post a comment on why they feels it should be deleted and the poster should be given 3 days to respond (unless there is a TOU violation involved).
5. Have an open mind and quit being a bunch of bean counters. We have read responses from Dell worried about profitability of ideas. While profit is the primary goal of the company, sometimes you have to take a chance. A truely innovative idea may not earn direct profits but may garner significant press and show Dell as the leader is should be rather than just another follower.
Feel free to post any other ways you feel the process can be improved inside the comments of this idea.

Students.....surely there's and opportunity here
Education, Sales Strategies submitted by perryphilipp

Ok so I'm a graduating student so this is more for my peers, but surely there is the option to have and education option here in the UK, i know the USA has a dell education site.
Every year there are hundreds of thousands of students within our universitys, colleges, and high schools that seek computers for their studies....
Obviously there are the usual offers in September when everyone is starting the new educational year, but could there not be a whole educational sub-site, with competitions, organised DELL events at universities etc... much like Xbox Live is doing with live gigs etc,,,
There would be the opportunity for DELL to not only procure personal information of thousands of people to sell or do with what they want, but also it would improve their general image, and if someone has a computer that is good quality during university they tend to stick with that brand.
I am waiting for another DELL laptop for myself, as they are all i've ever had and quality-wise have never let me down, comparitively my friend sticks to sony and has done the last 10 years.
Its not all about discounts, its also about regular interaction with your customers, on various levels.

System Update
Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by ahazan

Crrently in Dell software & driver support dell takes your system tag and shows all available drivers and software for all peripherals that were offered on that system. that could mean 5 video cards 3 wireless nics, 4 CDR drives. It should be more like windows update or Lenovo thinkvanatge system update where it detects what hardware you have (or looks up what was shipped by service tag) and offers you only software and drivers for WHAT YOU HAVE. and also only offers drivers newer than what's currently installed

Provide option of HDD which can be replaced with SSD in near future..

The time has come when DELL should provide option of HDD which can be replaced with SSD in near future. This is because in near future price of flash based SSD will drop, and then customer would like to replace the HDD with SSD, and carry HDD as a backup memory in separate case. This will also add to battery time due to low power consumption of SSD, along with faster response. hope DELL will start thinking and working on this idea.

Provide a Dell Update function on the Dell support site

Provide a Dell Update function on the Dell support site.
Updating Dell-specific system files on Dell computers is ridiculous. The way the updates are classified, you need to browse each category, click each update and read each description in order to even just see the date and version - so that you can decide if you need each. Then for each, you must either remember whether or not you have it already, or you must look through the computer's updates to see if it's already there.
There should be a website function (a la Windows update) or a universal updater application that you can download and run (one that would work with ALL Dell models - not one for each model). Either way, you should be presented with which ones are important, which are optional, which are already installed, and when they were posted/installed/etc. And then the download and install can be managed by the app as well. Again, like la Windows Update.
This should be made available to all owners of any dell computers - not only to enterprise or large businesses.
