Matte high-resolution screens

Monitors and Displays submitted by programmer001 03/05/07

Dell unfortunately jumped on the TrueLife display for laptops.
These are good for gaming and movies because of the colors and brightness, but are bad for working because they are too much reflective. I am a programmer and the reason for which I used to buy Dell is because of the very high resolution screens (UXGA, WUXGA). In facts I would like to see high-resolution screens available in more laptop models, possibly even in the 15" ones, and in particular I would like to see MATTE high-resolution screens available, not TrueLife.

I guess movies/gaming customers probably buy low-resolution screens, while programmers like me buy high-resolution screens (UXGA, WUXGA) and these are the ones that would benefit from a modern matte screen. A good choice for Dell would probably be to provide the low resolution screens as TrueLife and the high resolution ones as matte, while now it is more like the opposite.

Please offer matte high-res screens at least as an option. 6 Comments »

A better 17" 1440x900 Anti-glare (non glossy) screen and a black-silver design.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays submitted by pmb 02/27/07

I have severals 17" inspirons 9200-9400 notebooks and the "ultrasharp"-dimm screen stinks. In think it's a good idea to have a "middle-cost" professional alternative with a really good anti-glare (non-glossy!) screen. I not a gammer and for works we need a 17" notebooks, why don't sell a Latitude o similar 17" bussiness oriented laptop at decent price (not the overpriced M90 workstation, please!)

In have also a pair of inspiron 1300 with 15.4 screen. These screen are really very good in my opinion, why canno´t put the same quality screen in the Inspiron 9400 line??

Also the white-silver chasis it's really very ugly in my opinion. The general impresion it's they are a bulky and cheap desing copy of Mac laptops...

Please a black-silver design like latitude or maybe Inspiron 1300 it will welcome (why not a inspiron 1300 line with 17" screen option??).

Thanks and please excuse my poor english :-) 1 Comment »

Matte (NOT TrueLife) Display on XPS m1330

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by mw 06/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

The XPS m1330 seems to be the perfect machine, aside from a few imperfections (no Gigabit Ethernet, for example). However, there is one feature that is an absolute dealbreaker for me--the glossy TrueLife screen. I remember the day before the shiny screens, and what a beautiful day that was.

If the XPS m1330 were available with a matte option (along with LED backlighting, of course), I would order one right now. I just don't think I can deal with the TrueLife panel.

Non-Glossy Screen on the XPS 1530

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by zero79 Feb 17

Glossy screens are reflective. This is bad. Please provide a non-glossy option on the XPS 1530. 11 Comments »

Bring back non-glossy displays on the Inspiron notebooks!

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays submitted by blomster 10/26/07

The only display options showing today (10/26/07) for the 1420 and 1520 notebooks are all glossy screens. ARGH!

I want to buy an XPS M1330, but the glossy screen is a deal breaker for me. Then I was looking at the Inspiron 1420 because it had an antiglare screen available. Now the antiglare option is gone from the website.

Why, Dell? Why? 5 Comments »

Avoid Glare On Screens and Notebook Frames

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bobetsue 02/20/07

Glare and reflection from high glare screens, screen frames, and notebook computers is annoying and distract from function and use.

In stores, this may be a marketing ploy. Consumers may not fully understand the problem of glare. Online sellers like Dell should inform buyers when shopping whether the screen and case are "glare" or "nonglare."

When "nonglare" was introduced to television, shoppers considered it an advantage worthy of extra expense. In the art world, nonglare glass is considered worthy of extra expense.

How did we ever get glossy screens?

Dell should offer customers a choice between "glare" and "nonglare." 226 Comments »

Use better LCD panels in laptops.

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by mlazarov Feb 26

In order for laptops to be a viable platform for graphical applications, the color reproduction and viewing angles of their displays must be addressed. Most laptops use TN/CCFL displays that suffer from poor color range and color shift. Dell should at very least offer an S-IPS/LED display option in their workstation-class laptops. I realize several of Dell's laptops already have LED backlighting, but there would a significant improvement quality if S-IPS panels were used.

Update: I thought it'd be best to illustrate the difference between TN and S-IPS displays. Below is a side-by-side comparison of a TN (left) and S-IPS (right) display from an off-axis vertical angle.

http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/10884.jpg

Having such dramatic color variation at different angles almost precludes any sort of in-field collaborative image editing or similar application. The laptop on the right is a (discontinued) ThinkPad T60p.

Give us the option of a glossy or a non-glossy screen on ALL desktop monitors REGARDLESS of color

Monitors and Displays submitted by winoffice Mar 13

I have checked the Dell Web site and I have seen in most cases (on desktop monitors) that the black screens have non-glossy screens and that the silver screens have glossy screens. And why is that Dell? What if I want a non-glossy screen on a silver monitor, or a glossy screen on a black monitor? Please give us the option of a glossy (TrueLife) or a non-glossy (anti-glare) screen on ALL desktop monitors REGARDLESS of whether it is silver or black.

And now BEFORE those of you who hate glossy screens demote this, please notice that I am asking for nothing other than the OPTION, so that you could always opt out if that was what you wanted. 3 Comments »

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Allow customers to come to Dell.com and Order just "Plant a Tree"

Dell Web Site, Environment, New Product Ideas submitted by clocks 06/27/07 **ALREADY OFFERED**

Allow users to work with dell to imrpove Dell's "green" image. Make an "Accessories" product to allow people to just order "plant a tree" or to order as many "Plant a tree"s as they want. This option was not presented when I bought a desktop just a few days ago and I personally would go back right now and order "Plant a tree" because I would like to.

I think that if nothing else, the few minutes it would take Dell to setup this option would give you guys something to point to, even if it wasnt an option that a lot of people had taken advantage of.

if you wanted to take the concept a step forward, build a few add banners/buttons etc to make freely availible with the code to insert one on your web page. The button would be something along the lines of "Join Dell in planting trees". Your logo is associated with an environmental practice, blue logo on green with various tree abstracts in the image, etc. Reputation boost, plus you have genuinely provided a capability to your user base and various concerns on the internet to actively take part in helping Dell be green.

Sure, maybe you are using a few hours of the time of your salaried workers who you already pay for to add the item to the site and create some logos but if you really care about improving your reputation in this area, it might be an investment well worth it. 14 Comments »

Inspiron Notebooks with option of transreflective LCD (sunlight/high ambient light readable)

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by benjesuit 06/21/07

Cell phones, PDA's, Automotive GPS units have them. The time has come that at least a one of your notebooks should have them as an option.

With the near ubiquity of Wifi in metropolitan areas as well as in many park areas...

Not to mention 3G and CDMA EVDO wireless celluar broadband...

The places where a notebook can be used and stay connected to the net or VPN are near limitless.

Business lunch done al fresco. Lunch on the lawn of central park while writing. Sitting out on your deck while watching the markets. Whatever one uses their computer for, it can now be done in the open air.*

Example of Dell's ATG Latitude w transreflective screen versus an IBM w/o

* notebooks should not be used at the beach due to salt air corrosion. They should also not be used in rainy conditions. And certainly shouldn't be used while lounge wading in a pool or Jacuzzi. 11 Comments »

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Check out the white LED backlights on the <ahref>XPS M1730.

Geeks to Grandmas - Service Customization

Service and Support submitted by dell_admin1 05/18/07

Dell wants your feedback on the following idea intended to improve customer service and support:

We're considering providing customers the ability to self-select their service queue based on their own technical capability, such as "Advanced Computer Knowledge," "Intermediate," or "Beginner," further customizing the support experience.

UPDATE (May 18 at 8pm Central):
A number of people are asking for more information about this idea so they can comment. However, this idea is not a defined “offer” at this point, so many details have not yet been determined. That’s why we want your feedback! Others have asked if this idea would cost extra or not… in this case, that has not yet been determined and we’re hoping to use your comments to help define the answer. 80 Comments »

MagSafe power connectors, by Apple, are magnetic power connectors that pull out harmlessly when the cord is tripped upon.

They are very cool and quite sensible.

NICE New Dell montor! Keep making great designs like this.

Monitors and Displays submitted by jmxz 05/18/07

http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/18/dells-ultra-thin-concept-lcd-with-displayp...

Dell's ultra-thin LCD concept with DisplayPort going retail?
...
Remember that super swanky Dell monitor concept we went ga ga over back at January's CES? Yeah, we still find it hard to believe it's a Dell design. Well, it'll apparently be up for sale later in the year.
Beautiful - we want more great designs like this. 41 Comments »
