Dell change your CD/DVD's to SATA for cable reduction allowing better cooling.

Desktops, Servers and Storage submitted by jorge 06/19/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Dell change CD/DVD's on your Desktop and Server models (All) to SATA. Using SATA cables reduces any ventilation restrictions which can occur with IDE ribbon cables. SATA also reduces configuration issues for new computer users, reducing support calls.

Inspiron Notebooks with option of transreflective LCD (sunlight/high ambient light readable)

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by benjesuit 06/21/07

Cell phones, PDA's, Automotive GPS units have them. The time has come that at least a one of your notebooks should have them as an option.

With the near ubiquity of Wifi in metropolitan areas as well as in many park areas...

Not to mention 3G and CDMA EVDO wireless celluar broadband...

The places where a notebook can be used and stay connected to the net or VPN are near limitless.

Business lunch done al fresco. Lunch on the lawn of central park while writing. Sitting out on your deck while watching the markets. Whatever one uses their computer for, it can now be done in the open air.*

Example of Dell's ATG Latitude w transreflective screen versus an IBM w/o

* notebooks should not be used at the beach due to salt air corrosion. They should also not be used in rainy conditions. And certainly shouldn't be used while lounge wading in a pool or Jacuzzi. 11 Comments »

Ubuntu Dells for Premier

Simplify IT submitted by erimar77 06/17/07

Please give the users of Dell Premier the option to purchase Ubuntu Dells.

As a buyer for an academic environment, I have the opportunity to purchase Ubuntu Dells only if they are available through the Premier site. 3 Comments »

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage

Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

Add all the OS's you sell to the "Help Me Choose: Operating System" page

Dell Web Site, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/08/07

These pages: titled "Help Me Choose: Operating System" (a Dell help me choose page, another one)
only list some of the operating systems Dell sells.

I assume you also recommend Ubuntu for some home users (those who want better security and performance, I imagine) and FreeDOS for business (since that's what you sell on your Latitudes - even though I can't imagine why you prefer FreeDOS there over Ubuntu). But unless you put them in those pages, we can't easily make an informed choice. 15 Comments »

Laptop Fans

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by davew 02/18/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Heat rises! Get the exhaust ports off the bottom of the laptops where it just blows back up into the machine. Put them out the side or the top and everything including processors, drives, batteries and the cooling systems themselves will run cooler and more efficiently. I already burned out one mother board, which thankfully was replaced under extended warrantee. I am so protective now that I never use my laptop without a supplemental cooling pad underneath, which blows the air out the sides. Unless this changes I would think twice about buying another or recommending a Dell laptop to anyone else without advising them of the problem.

An even easier site-cleanup idea for Jokes, Dupes, etc.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz 06/15/07

Would this be an easier way to clean up ideastorm.

1. Have a mode that hides Ideas with negative votes.
2. Add a link to put you into a mode that lets you see Ideas with negative votes.
3. Make the default to hide the negative-voted ideas; so execs and normal users aren't subjected to them.
4. Encourage people to vote down dupes; and let people change their votes so longtime users can re-vote down dupes that they didn't notice were dupes the first time.

For any normal user not clicking on the "also show bad ideas" feature, IdeaStorm would be reasonably clean. Dell_admin* and Dell execs could focus on only ideas voted up. People who have an Idea voted negatively can't complain about censorship; and have the option of lobbying elsewhere (slashdot, digg, msn forums) to getting their bad idea back into positive territory if they want people to see it. 6 Comments »

Dell Quickly Create a Transformer Computer for Kids, and enjoy the coming bandgwagon of Transformer mania!

Advertising and Marketing, New Product Ideas, Sales Strategies submitted by jorge 06/16/07

Voted Best Idea! By Kids nationwide! On KidStorm.com

Dell quickly develop a case for both Notebooks and Desktops that either use or are actual transformers. The Movie is going to be out soon and if you time it right you can hit the bandwagon marketing window and cash out! As in sell a plethora of computers using this theme and without using the actual word Transformer! Kids will buy these up by the gross! You can use your outgoing product line as the guts of the transformer computers to use up the remaining P4's and Celerons you still have lying around. These computers do not have to be long lasting only hyped up to sell as a gimmick, and your new Wal-Mart deal can be used to distribute as most of the possible customers will be buying there as it is.

Car companies are gearing up, so don't miss out on this opportunity!

See!

Plant a tree program - send back a thankyou note with tree location :)

Environment submitted by amonymous 03/04/07

I'm usually skeptical about donating money on checkmark things like 'click here if you'd like to help reforestation and plant a tree ($2)'

I may however click on Dell's checkbox because its Dell..but I'd feel better if you send me an email 'Your tree was planted in <sometown>, <somecountry>. Thank you for your support in saving the generations to come.'

Of course you dont have to track individual trees that are planted - but I'm sure there's an order like '1000 plants in <sometown>' Comment »

Linux submitted by lordshipmayhem 05/14/07

Some people prefer Gnome, others KDE. There should be enough room on the hard drive for both. 8 Comments »

Add some colors!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by bajtalan.hunor 02/24/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

In my opinion nowadays colors like gray or black are getting too old. Why Dell does not follow other companies like Sony or Apple or the tiny Flybook. People like colors because it expresses their personality, not everybody is a businessman or businesswoman, we like colors. For example white is getting more and more popular but there are other trendy colors out there.

So PLEASE ADD SOME COLOR TO YOUR NOTEBOOK AND DESKTOP LINES and make them look like jewelry and not like a piece of plastic, do some cool design.

We like to show a laptop to which people say WOW. So the "WOW STARTS NOW"!

The new Inspiron and XPS notebooks do come in colors now, but stay tuned for more ways to customize the look of your PC.

If you preinstall Ubuntu, please change the colours to something fresher than that bright brown.

Linux submitted by cosh 05/16/07

That brown is gonna put a hellova lotta of people off. Put something bright and airy and fresh and modern on it instead.

Okay I know some people like that colour, but something more universal would be a better choice for the mass-market, maybe something Dell-themed. 27 Comments »

Keep Ubuntu computer on the selves for at least a year

Advertising and Marketing, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by zhinker 05/16/07

I don't know what your plans are Dell, but I know some companies often run experimental campaigns like your one with Ubuntu for just a couple months before deciding if it's a success or not. I'd recommend keeping Ubuntu available as an option for at least a year or more before shelving it (shouldn't cost you much to keep it) because that way you would give a better chance to plan on buying a Dell computer for their needs instead of some other one that they would have gotten otherwise, and it would allow more time for the word to spread to non-linux users about the "cheap new Dell computers," especially since it doesn't seem like you're trying hard to advertise them anyways 5 Comments »

Build your computer design

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by danielle_santos 05/17/07

Dell could develop a configuration line of personal computers that you can chose the format, color, size, etc... of your desktop.
Since you are the 1st company to direct sales for personal computers funcionlality you could became the 1st company to configure the computer design.

The desktop will be not black or white model. The costumer can added your personal desktop to a home as a design piece. 3 Comments »

Service and Support submitted by dell_admin1 05/18/07

Dell wants your feedback on the following idea intended to improve customer service and support:

We're considering providing customers the ability to self-select their service queue based on their own technical capability, such as "Advanced Computer Knowledge," "Intermediate," or "Beginner," further customizing the support experience.

UPDATE (May 18 at 8pm Central):
A number of people are asking for more information about this idea so they can comment. However, this idea is not a defined “offer” at this point, so many details have not yet been determined. That’s why we want your feedback! Others have asked if this idea would cost extra or not… in this case, that has not yet been determined and we’re hoping to use your comments to help define the answer. 80 Comments »
