I have a XP Pro retail copy, will soon buy retail vista, I also like Linux: Make WINDOWS-FREE, and OS-Free an option for more than just expensive business lines.
Dell has systems available that do not have an OS pre-loaded called N-Series line. You can check them out at www.dell.com/nseries.

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.
I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available. This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

ubuntu on my computer: open source for education

I am a french teacher working in the south of France .The school's computers are Dell and Nec computers. Like most of my colleagues, I am using "opensource" (free) softwares, and specially Ubuntu for 2 years. It works perfectly and the pupils who tried Ubuntu like it very much. I hope it will be possible to buy a Dell computer without Windows very soon and I hope that all the Dell computers of my school will use Ubuntu. Not only because Ubuntu is free (even if it's not insignificant in a french school...) , but because working with Ubuntu forces you to understand and to think how and why you are using your (Dell) computer. I know that I'm speaking and writing english language like a spanish cow, so I'm sorry. I just want to finish my message with this: please be the first big computer manufacturer offering Ubuntu or Windows (which is very performant, but not the only one and specially at school) .

A new handheld PDA line
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas submitted by genjinaro

With the recent talks of Dell ending the Axim line of PDAs, it has hit our community hard. Being that Dell has produced one of the most powerful handhelds ever manufactured and to this day few have come close to the hardware specs of this small but powerful unit. Even to this day it is recognized as the most powerful stand alone PDA in the market, the Axim X51v.
My proposal is that Dell continue to stay in the handheld market, it doesn't have to be a stand alone PDA, since recent models are now PDA phones. I'd love to see Dell make 2 different types of handhelds, 1 being a PDA type, and the othe,r a PDA/UMPC dual-unit with 2 Operationg systems, Windows Mobile & Windows Tablet (Vista).
In my honest opinion I would love to see a Dell handheld keeping both the CF & SD slots (favored but not necessary) with updated hardware and a Windows Mobile 6 or greater OS. The twist is, is that each would have the same hardware specs but a different form factor, one similar to a traditional handheld and the other as a mini tablet form.
As for the PDA/UMPC dual unit, this would really make up for the current UMPC's downsides, one of them being the fact that you simply cannot effectively use a UMPC with instant on and good battery life and you don't have the same speeds as a mobile OS does. On the oither hand when using the mobile OS isn't enough for your specific tasks you can switch to the desktop OS ala the UMPC side of the unit. I'd love to see a Windows Mobile 6 Professional OS & a Windows Vista Business combination all in one dual-unit.
I would also reccomend an Optional Dock Disk Drive Stand for CD/DVDRW etc. or similar to those lines for the PDA/UMPC dual unit.
I would also count the PDA/UMPC unit as being the high end unit in comparison to the PDA/ phone type unit.
I would direct the PDA type to college students & the UMPC/PDA type to business users. Also I would recommend bluetooth keyboards and mice with both, as separate purchase accessories or in bundle packs for fair pricing.
If priced competitively well as you have did the Axim I can see a future here. They would also make for good display items at Dell Kiosks. Keeping a price range of $400-$980 would be ideal, much bettter than what current competitors offer.
I'm sure the handheld community will agree, Dell shouldn't leave the handheld market, Dell is a powerful name in that community...

What I'd like to be able to buy from Dell:
13.3 ~5 lb Performance Tablet PC with great discrete graphics options (x1700 or GeForce 7700) possibly even upgradable. Possibly a dual graphics chip option similar to the Sony SZ line to help with battery life. A nice high res wide viewing angle screen WXGA+ or better option for working with multiple text files 9 Cell (or larger) battery options to get 5+ hours of life Built in optical drive with swappable drive bay battery options Latest WiFI (802.11n) and bluetooth Great keyboard with trackpoint nub and touchpad. Non-plastic case options. Carbon fiber, magnesium alloy... whatever... just something without the cheapy plastic feel. Backlit keyboard All the little extras - SD card reader - finger print scanner - extra usb ports - firewire - PCMCIA (for corporate smart card readers) and ExpressCard
External docking station Possibly a camera options Possibly a non-tablet version as well

The XPS and E series notebooks are great, but a move into making 12.1 and 14.1 inch tablet PC convertible notebooks would be fantastic. I can easily see the m1210 and the e1405 being ported to the tablet medium. Check out what Glenn from the tablet team has to say about the Latitude XT.

The Simple TabletPC

How about a normal, boring, simple TabletPC?
Give us a 14.1" screen with a decent resolution, a Wacom based digitizer, a standard dual core CPU, 1-2gb RAM, and a decent graphics card.
There are power users out there that just want the tablet for simple notetaking and quick sketches, doodles, etc and do not need the gestures or finger touch. When we need to move around the OS, we use the mouse and keyboard because it is faster.
Please give us a normal TabletPC with a better price point.
