Flybook

Broadband and Mobility, New Product Ideas submitted by badblood 04/18/07

Mobility redefined! Flybook is a go-anywhere, do-everything computer. It’s as powerful as a desktop or a heavyweight laptop PC and as handy as a mobile phone. At a tiny 235 x 155 x 31mm, it’s crammed with the latest multimedia and telecommunications technology.

It is the best compromise between the UMPC form, a tablet PC and fully functional PC.

Dell buy Flybook or make a computer just like it!

Mechanical Mouse Moratorium

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by sla161 04/19/07

The mechanical mouse is dead, or at least should be in my opinion. Anyone who has used one curses the mechanical mouse after a few days of use. Yet it costs approx $15 to upgrade from a mechanical mouse to an optical on Dell's website. I can get a basic Logitech optical two button mouse for under five bucks. Get rid of the mechanical mouse and give us an optical by default raising the system price a few dollars, or allow us to select no mouse and actually take a few dollars off each machine. It's not much, but for those of us who purchase huge quantities of systems, it all adds up. 7 Comments »

Let customers choose what trialware/demoware to pre-install to subsidize their machine.

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by jmxz 04/19/07

Many people understandably complain about third party software on Dells (it's one of the top rated items on ideastorm).

Many people also respond by defending this software pointing out that it subsidizes the cost of the machines.

And perhaps show it in a "optional trial / reduced functionality software" section like this:

McAfee Trial - (subtract $10)
Norton Trial - (subtract $15)
AOL trial - (subtract $20)
MSN default search engine (subtract $20)
Microsoft Works - (subtract $100)
on your purchase pages.

That would give people who don't want the hassle of the third party windows software ways to avoid it; and it would give power users who don't mind it and know how to uninstall/avoid it the benefit of the cheaper subsidized machine.

Personally I would get them all -- yes, including Norton and Macafee and any other antivirus programs - because the first thing I'd do is remove Windows from the machine anyway. But it would be interesting to see if I can get a machine sufficiently cheaper that my savings would offset the time it would take to install Linux vs the presumably higher cost of buying a less subsidized pre-installed Linux machine. 9 Comments »

Biodegradable Packing material

Environment submitted by ewagnerjr2000 04/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

When I received my 32" lcd screen it had an extremely large amount of Styrofoam. Dell is working to be environmentally friendly, maybe they should consider a better packing material at least one that will biodegrade.

Desktop and Notebook Fusion

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by ninkorn 04/19/07

For professionals who owns both laptops and desktops, they want the best of both worlds.

They want ultimate portability and long battery life on their laptops. (Battery life issue can be compensated by abandoning the current laptop AC power cable design. Why do they always come in 2 different components that you have to connect together? And why are they so big and heavy? Why can't all laptops come with AC adapters that old iBooks and Powerbooks used to come with. They were so portable and small that one can carry it around in their jean pocket!) They might be indifferent to sacrificing some performance (such as processor power, graphic cards etc) and extra drives (such as DVD/RW Rom) in exchange for portability. Afterall, laptops users carry their laptop everywhere.

But when they are home, portability is no longer an issue. Now the users want power and performance to do extra activities such as photo editing, home movie editing, gaming and etc. To satisfy this need, should they purchase a more powerful desktop PC when they already own a notebook computer?

Why not come up with some kind of sync feature that can fuse the laptop and desktop together. Once these two devices are connected, the user can use the laptop as monitor and keyboard, while having access to hardware components of the desktop PC. (Of course, the user should have easy access to both hard drives on the laptop and the desktop for file sharing - kind of like PDA synchronization with PC) Once they are separated, they should also work as two different machines.

This will be perfect for most professionals with different needs throughout the day. Innovation, perhaps Dell should embrace it with open arms. Comment »

Apply Thermal Grease At The Factory - Thermal Pads Are Terrible.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by burner 04/19/07

The use of thermal grease instead of a thermal pad will cause better heat transfer between the CPU and heatsink. More heat will be removed by the heatsink as a result. This should increase the lifespan of several components and reduce fan speed/noise.

I dropped the idle temperature by 34 degrees celcius (from 84 to 50) on my Inspiron 1300 by replacing the Dell-supplied thermal pad with my own thermal grease. The fan is now barely audible and the case/exhaust is cool to the touch.

This small change could result in cooler, quieter and longer lasting computers. 8 Comments »

Thin and Light Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by yaletownkid 04/19/07

I used to be all about performance and display with my choice of laptop. But I went "thin and light" about 3 years ago, and I will never go back!

I know the majority of buyers prefer the 15" (or bigger) screens, and big wrist-wrest keypads, but have you ever tried to use one on a plane? Send the Product Manager on a few cross-country, economy class flights and they'll see what I mean. I have an office, home office, and i"m mobile daily. Honestly try carrying around 8lbs and 15" form factor - its like carrying dumbbells.

Please look into:
1. Form factors of 12" screens, Less than 3lbs
2. try magnetitic power connection
3. solid state memory possibilities
4. Dire need of a style/design update. My 640m has all the sex appeal of a dial tone.
5. I would pay a premium to NOT have all that bloatware pre-installed.
6. the optical drive - can we make this totally optional?

Thanks for letting me participate. 1 Comment »

System Security - Fingerprint Scanners

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by guardianxps 02/17/07

I would like to see computers have some new technology added like Fingerprint scanners. Stolen computers are an issue and adding this will create a better level of security. The only downside I can see would be if one person sold the computer to another and didnt reset the scanner.

Still, I would like to see this and I am sure others would too. 31 Comments »

Bring Back The Save Configuration Code

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by csecu 04/20/07

The Dell website used to create an "E-Value Code" customers could use to save their custom system configurations for later purchase, or to e-mail to relatives, friends, etc, so they could just type it in and order a system you had configured for them. What happened to that?

Bring back the code! Comment »

Improve Inspiron quality

Inspiron products submitted by edovia 04/20/07

I have an Inspiron 6000 that blew up only a few weeks after the warranty was over. The design is bad and causes the CPU to overheat and give up. And I'm not the only one!

There is a class action going up here in Canada but does not include model 6000... yet!

So much for a 2000$ CAD computer... Pigs will fly before Dell sees my money again!

Thank you, Dell! 9 Comments »

Systems that the customer can define

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by justjoe9074 04/20/07

I have many Dell computers. I always buy a Dell and I wouldn't think of buying any other type. However, right now my needs are for speed (ie 4GB+ RAM, Fast processor) not storage or other "add-ons". For example, I would like a bare bones machine with XP and alot of RAM/Processing power. I don't need the bundled software, I seldom use it. I use my own firewall software, I use my own video production software, I use my own photo editing software and I just end up removing most of the pre-installed software everytime I get a new Dell.

I wish Dell would offer a cost effective way for users to get pure power without having to pay for the stuff that I don't want (like the certain preintsalled software). I want bare bones raw power at a good price. XPS is too costly. Thanks! 4 Comments »

Clearly mark all cables and powergenerators

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by lysglimt 04/20/07

I have been with Dell for 10 years and have bought dozens of machines.
I have a room full of Dell stuff.
Whenever I need say a extra Laptop power converter I look in the room first.
But all the stuff is not marked, so I have to spend a lot of time finding out what is what.
Please just label everything, what it is. With a number I can look up online and order more , see it it fits new equipemt etc. 5 Comments »

Make batteries compatible

Laptop Power submitted by lysglimt 04/20/07

I have a Dell Latitude laptop where I have bought spare batteries for when I travel. I was about to buy a new Latitude, same model - just newer. But my spare batteries won't work! They are the same voltage but the design is slightly different. So I have to trash 3 perfectly fine working batteries and buy new ones. Please think long-term - think 5-10-20 years ahead. Make sure the batteries and other parts are standardized and always fit. 9 Comments »

Make coloured cases

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by mauricio_martins 04/20/07

The market has elected computer cases colors a standard: or you got it black or you got it white. This resembles the old days where the only colors for cars was only black.

Why do not tightly work with the customers leaving them decide about the colors of their computers? This is a thing that car industries does... a set of basic colours (at no cost) and a set of custom shiny-cool-beautiful-colors at some cost. 10 Comments »

Loyalty Scheme

Sales Strategies submitted by jspuds 04/20/07

I would like to suggest a Dell Loyalty Scheme. I like most techies help family & friends buy pc's and laptops and always suggest they buy Dell.
What if as a techie or helper I could register with Dell and when people we help purchase are buying machines from your website they should be able to put in a name or member number of the Dell member who helped them buy or choose their purchase.

This Dell Member would then earn points per purchase and this they could use to get discounts for themselves.

coupons on xps notebooks

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by robertobiggio 04/20/07

never saw any coupon on dell xps notebooks since that series came out.

i dont mean xps is overpriced.
but look at other premium notebooks, its not up to bar with apple mac series.
or even some good sony notebooks.
so why not let market decides products price instead
let dell executive--kevin rollins make the pricing policy. 6 Comments »
