Tell us what WiFi chipset a laptop has.

Broadband and Mobility, Dell Web Site, Linux, Laptops submitted by tonyb2006 08/29/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Tell us the WiFi chipset used in a laptop before we buy it so we know if the WiFi chipset supports a feature we want, or if it supports Linux or another operating system that we intend to use. The WiFi chipset being like "Intel ipw2200" or "Broadcom BCM4306", or "Ralink rt2500".

Allow Anti-Virus as Optional

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by rgb66rgb 09/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Some purchasers already have subscriptions to anti-virus products that can be ported to new systems. Not having a 'no anti-virus' option on every system order page forces those users to essentially buy two licenses when only one machine will be used.

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

Offer BOTH the 32 bits AND the 64 bits versions of all Windows Vista editions (Home Basic/Premium, Business and Ultimate) on all PCs

Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by winoffice Feb 24

(Note to XP and Linux users: I am not against Dell offering XP and Linux as well, but this idea is specifically about Vista.)

(Note to Dell: I have never seen any exact duplicate of this so far, as I have seen no idea asking for both 32 bits and 64 bits yet. So please do not merge with what you might find to be a duplicate, until you notify me and I make a reply.)

The idea has been thrown around the site for quite a long time now. I have seen ideas asking for 64 bits Vista, but no specific mentions of 32 bits Vista. So I decided to post it.

Offer both the 32 bits and the 64 bits versions of all Windows Vista editions (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) on all PCs.

That way, I could choose any of those four editions in either 32 bits or 64 bits format. With 32 bits, you can get better compatibility with hardware and software. With 64 bits, you can get better use of memory, and you are able to get up to 4 GB of RAM and even greater.

In my opinion, neither outweighs the other, so I would like it if Dell could offer all of it. I personally will buy only 32 bits Vista because for me, compatibility is more important than memory usage and I do not happen to need 4 GB of memory. But many others want the option of 64 bits Vista.

HP can offer 64 bits Vista Ultimate (I myself have tried to configure their PCs), why can you not? The problem with them however, is that I am forced into buying 64 bits Vista Ultimate or no Vista Ultimate at all. You currently offer 32 bits Vista Ultimate, and keep that option. Just add 64 bits Vista options to your current offerings, but keep your current offerings too. 50 Comments »

Keep the XPS Product Line

XPS products submitted by dabrace1984 May 12

According to Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/12/dell-dropping-xps-focusing-on-alienware) Dell is going to be dropping the XPS product line and focusing on the Alienware brand for gaming and high performance computing. Promote this Idea to let Dell know that we need to keep the XPS desktop and laptop product line. 31 Comments »

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood 08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.

Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Make a calendar with all COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas

Advertising and Marketing, IdeaStorm submitted by krasmussen 09/22/07 **REVIEWED**

One of the biggest annoyances with IdeaStorm is that the horizon for an idea being implemented is very blurry, if at all existing. If you're lucky, you get "third quarter 2009", but mostly, there is no timeframe at all. This leads to the feeling that not much is being done, and exactly that feeling is what IdeaStorm should be eliminating.

Therefore, I propose that you make a list or calender with all the COMING SOON and IN PROGRESS ideas with timeframes for all of them. Just a "december 2008" would be nice, or better yet, "deadline 31st november 2008".

I don't know if this is connected with some goal management inside Dell, if it is, maybe you should work on improving that, too?

Today, the best way to know the progress of an idea is through Ideas in Action, our Weekly Update or Dell comments in the thread.

Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM

Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript 08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself.
On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...

It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.

thanks =D

PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers

Software submitted by jervis961 08/23/07 **REVIEWED**

Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?

"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"

Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Touchpads suck! A new internal mouse invention for Notebooks

Laptops submitted by liurical 02/16/07

Touchpads suck. I don't get why they've been around for so long. None of the big companies offer a good alternative besides us having to buy and carry around an external mouse.

I came across this invention that is effective like a normal mouse, but can be contained within a notebook computer. It can definitely remove the issues I face with the touchpad .

I characterize it as the trackball of an optical mouse, but would actually work well if designed properly.

I came across this invention after stumbling on the inventor's site. http://www.nextintuit.com He has a prototype simulation of the simple invention in flash.

The Wii and iPod were both hits, the way they input data had a lot to do with that success. I want to see something different from Dell for a change. 32 Comments »

Touchpad disabled when USB mouse plugged in.

Option in BIOS for touchpad to be disabled with USB mouse is present.

DELL's older laptop models have that option is BIOS. I hope it continues. 1 Comment »

Off switch for touchpad on notebooks

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by jscottd 02/23/07

All of my users would love the ability to turn off the touch pad. A simple recessed button near the touch pad or even along the side of the machine. How about by the power switch? I know other manufacturers already have this. Let's get up to speed. 8 Comments »

Make expandible graphics cards for laptops.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming, Desktops and Laptops submitted by mastercestes 05/07/07

This would make the Laptops just as competitive as the standard Desktop market. And would introduce a new corner of the market for "tinker's" of Laptops.

This would also let gamers be able to keep up in the development of games. 1 Comment »

Warn people of poor Vista performance where they choose between XP and Vista

Gaming, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 05/07/07

Another new review today. http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTMzNCwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA== And it's not just performance:

We initially had some major problems getting this game to patch under Vista. It would say that a shortcut could not be created, or more interestingly, “An unknown error has occurred. Process will end.” Good times – fodder for the “Mac vs. PC” commercials.
People interested in gaming should be cautioned against using Vista.

They'd probably be better off with Ubuntu+Wine than Vista for playing Windows-XP games.

XPS drivers

Gaming, Service and Support submitted by forestfire_88 04/21/07

I have two Insp XPS laptops, both Gen1 and Gen2 models. When I purchased these laptops, I was expecting to use it for gaming as well as other tasks. But a few months after the purchase of Gen2, there are no longer any new version drivers on the Dell support web site. It's 2007 now, and the video card driver posted on dell support site was released in 2005. The worst part is that nvidia.com and ati.com drivers does not work with the Dell systems. I pay over $3000 per laptop, I think the least Dell can do is provide updated version drivers, especially for the video card driver for the XPS line product. So, PLEASE UPDATE THE DRIVERS!!!!!!!!!! 2 Comments »

underpowered / misconfigured graphic cards

Gaming submitted by kjano 07/27/07

dear dell team, i am really a big fan of your desktops and notebooks but there is one thing that drives me crazy! dell sells excellent and reliable hardware - no question. but since month a good 15,4" notebook with strong graphic card is missing. the problem is not just the missing power for games, but also for GIS and CAD applications. i was so happy to see the new Inspiron 1520 notebook using the 8600M GT card, but then it turns out, that it is based on DDR2 memory. sorry, but this is crazy. if you look at reviews of MacBook PRO, ASUS G1S and many more all running their 8600M GTs with GDDR3 (as proposed by Nvidea) and than compare it to a notebook (such as the new Acer 5920G) using the same card but with DDR2 the difference is about 20%. Selling a notebook such as the Inspiron 1520 with DDR2 memory for the graphic card is really a misconfiguration.

The situation is even worse for the new Precision M4300. the website says that it is made for CAD etc, but the FX 360M is the smallest nvidea card for professionals, it has just a 64-Bit-interface. thats really too slow.

I would be very happy to see well powered graphic cards in dell notebooks, not just only for 17" - nobody like to carry them around. there are so many manufacturers that are able to deliver such notebooks, why not dell? 8 Comments »

santa rosa + nvidia 8 series + 15.4" = cash money

Gaming, Sales Strategies submitted by goomoo 03/08/07

Simply put: If Dell were the first to hit with a new XPS machine that was a lightweight 15.4" on the new Intel Santa Rosa platform, with a nvida 8600 dedicated video card, they would not be able to make those machines quickly enough for at least a year. 14.1-15.4" laptops are the biggest hole in Dell's lineup right now, especially with decent gaming power. Every major laptop manufacturer (including Apple, but not Lenovo), has a 14.1-15.4" notebook with either a x1600 or 7600. Some even have x1700 and 7700 gpu's now. Dell's turned a blind eye to this, and to gamers, especially gamers who like lan gaming! Gamers already know that these technologies are on the horizon, and have been watching Dell like hawks for years...

If Dell made this machine, with the Santa Rosa platform, and the nVidia 8X00 gpu, they might literally encite a riot of cash-weilding gamers clammoring at their doors. And who doesn't like cash money? I certainly do! 5 Comments »

Bring back the 15.4 inch XPS Laptop

Gaming, XPS products submitted by hoopsomuah 04/26/07

The Latitude D820 is a great laptop as long as you don't want to game. It's got fantastic resolution in a nice form factor and pretty good battery life.

Unfortunately there is no Inspiron or XPS equivalent of the D820. This means there's no high-resolution gaming road warrior laptop (think AlienWare m5550)

An XPS inspired by the D820 would be the ultimate work/gaming laptop.

Things to change from the D820 or to add to the XPS version:
1. Much better GPU options
2. DVI port
3. Better speakers
4. Built in web camera

Keeping the docking station connector would be really nice but I'll be talking for that elsewhere... Comment »
