Microsoft: number of 64-bit Vista PCs doubled in three months
By Emil Protalinski | Published: July 31, 2008 - 06:45PM CT
Unlike Apple, Microsoft does not control the hardware that its software runs on. This means that Apple can more easily move all its users to an x64 operating system: all Macs currently have 64-bit CPUs, and Snow Leopard is rumored to be a 64-bit-only release. Windows 7, on the other hand, will still be released in x86 and x64. Microsoft would prefer not to make Windows 7 available on computers with 32-bit CPUs (indeed, Windows 7 Server will be x64-only), but the decision is driven by software compatibility demands.
Many businesses still use 16-bit applications, which cannot run on a 64-bit operating system, or have 32-bit applications that for one reason or another don't run properly in an x64 environment. Few software developers offer x64 programs, and Microsoft doesn't want to hurry them up; the software giant wants the industry to make the move by itself. Apparently, this has already started. On the Windows Vista Team Blog, Microsoft has posted details of how the PC industry is moving from 32-bit to 64-bit PCs:
We've been tracking the change by looking at the percentage of 64bit PCs connecting to Windows Update, and have seen a dramatic increase in recent months. The installed base of 64bit Windows Vista PCs, as a percentage of all Windows Vista systems, has more than tripled in the US in the last three months, while worldwide adoption has more than doubled during the same period. Another view shows that 20 percent of new Windows Vista PCs in the US connecting to Windows Update in June were 64bit PCs, up from just 3 percent in March. Put more simply, usage of 64bit Windows Vista is growing much more rapidly than 32bit.
This rapid growth may appear to have come from nowhere, but on closer inspection, it hasn't. The major advantages of running a 64-bit installation of Vista is the ability to use 4GB or more of RAM and to use 64-bit applications. Although 32-bit operating systems can use more than 4GB of memory, for compatibility reasons MS limits 32-bit desktop OSes to 4GB. Prices for RAM have fallen, however, and OEMs are offering PCs with 4GB of RAM and more, forcing the switch to 64-bit Windows. The realization that Vista x64 has significantly superior compatibility to XP x64 is also starting to sink in. In Vista, 64-bit drivers are required for WHQL certification, and so many hardware manufacturers that were previously ignoring x64 have finally started to release x64 drivers.
Microsoft is also playing its part in the move to 64-bit. In addition to its 64-bit ready webpage, the company recently launched the Windows Vista Compatibility Center into beta phase, which will tell users whether a given product is 64-bit-compatible or not. x64 is clearly the future. If Redmond does indeed follow through with its decision to offer x86 and x64 versions of Windows 7 (and there's no indication that it won't), the company should at least make the effort to get OEMs to offer x64 by default on systems that can run it. Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM
Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript
08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself. On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...
It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.
thanks =D
PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware
Linux submitted by gergnz
02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**
I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!! Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

I got this idea from http://badvista.fsf.org/ Before i read this [quote] I thought Vista was great now... well see for yourself.
" * They decide which programs you can and can't use on your computer * They decide which features of your computer or software you can use at any given moment * They force you to install new programs even when you don't want to (and, of course, pay for the privilege) * They restrict your access to certain programs and even to your own data files
DRM is enforced by technological barriers. You try to do something, and your computer tells you that you can't. To make this effective, your computer has to be constantly monitoring what you are doing. This constant monitoring uses computing power and memory, and is a large part of the reason why Microsoft is telling you that you have to buy new and more powerful hardware in order to run Vista. They want you to buy new hardware not because you need it, but because your computer needs it in order to be more effective at restricting what you do.
Microsoft and other computer companies sometimes refer to these restrictions as 'Trusted Computing.' Given that they are designed to make it so that your computer stops trusting you and starts trusting Microsoft, these restrictions are more appropriately called 'Treacherous Computing'."

Fix/Remove the new backdoor(s) from Vista SP1 before shipping it.

Vista SP1 apparently has yet another new NSA backdoor; in addition to speculation of similar in XP and various other spyware features built in to Vista.
It seems that when Microsoft speaks of Vista "Security" - they're really talking about the RIAA / MPAA / Copyright laywers, and governments being secure from computer users (by giving both technical hooks as well as legalese in the EULA to let such groups go after users) rather than protecting the computer users themselves.
I imagine Dell would lose international sales if they were suspected of shipping software with government sponsored back doors; and US corporate spyware - so at least for your international sales, my Idea is that Dell should fix and/or remove these suspected backdoors before shipping.

Correct Sigmatel audio drivers "Stereo Mix"
Service and Support submitted by komaramusic
04/20/07
My last Dell computer upgrade Purchase of an Dimension E310 has some sort of sigmatel Audio on the Intel motherboard with the "Stereo Mix" recording feature turned off. More info by Google'ing "Dell Sigmatel Stereo Mix".
Whether this was done with hardware or software drivers, I cannot say. But my 4 previous Dell computers all had "Stereo Mix", and as it is required in Audio software recording, and probably costs more to turn off than leave on.
If something like this is going to be "disabled" that should be noted in advance.
I am not going to detail the horrendous Technical Support nightmare that followed from India. One of many wonderful ideas was to 'plug in the speakers'... enough said.
So now I am buying the extra sound card that will (one can only hope) correct this. Though such a purchase was not required for the 4 previous Dell computers. Let's also note that Dell tech support would not mention even one time, after repeated requests. that the new Soundcard would solve this. So I paid more and bought a better card... one still must hope. It arrives next week.
But I'm on my own, oh except for all those other people out there with the same problem... wish me luck.
