Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops
Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol

Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops.

Check out the Idea in Action update.

Synergize Dell products with some of Mahatma Gandhi's favourite sayings
Advertising and Marketing submitted by cosh

The new colourful notebooks: You should be the change that you want to see in the world.
The XPS series: Truth alone will endure; all the rest will be swept away before the tide of time.
The Ubuntu N-Series: First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win. ("they" referring to Microsoft)
The expensive ones: Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.
The business ones: Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.
Tech support: A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption in our work. He is the purpose of it.

Dell's Website must work with Firefox running on Linux
Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by qgonjon
07/16/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
It's discouraging to have a Tier 1 vendor (Dell) selling Linux products and yet not really tailoring to Linux. Don't get me wrong Dell, I am not trying to take away all the good you have done. Offering Linux is a step in the right direction and I would like to see more steps taken in a monthly or quarterly basis. But, it seems that the basis for your current Linux promotion is for the Open Source enthusiast like me. I use Linux at home and at work as my main operating system. I use Firefox as my browser and I'm trying to order a Dell Inspiron 1420N. However, it seems that the embedded flash script that shows the different colors choices for the Inspiron is not working under Linux. It also shows that I can't see the different images thereafter. It works with Windows running Firefox as my vmware machine verified. But that is not the type of user that will most likely purchase a Linux laptop.
My request is simple. Can someone fix and verify that this page works well with Linux browser technology? So, that users can enjoy purchasing your Linux products and demonstrate that Dell really cares about their customer's operating system preference.
Dell I wish you the best in this venture as your success in this territory will help the Linux Desktop become a reality to the open source community.

Improvement of Medical Care
Healthcare submitted by mhvstrick
07/06/07
I read that Michael Dell wanted to improve medical care in the world. I am a MD and I tried this idea on Bill Gates and never got to anyone. Basically, most doctors understand anatomy, physiology, disease processes and pharmacology. They could understand/ust the latest medical information if it were readily accessed. However, try to search Medline about a topic and you may see that thousands of citations are listed, but one can only get abstracts or titles for most items.
I have tried to search a particular topic for a medical school lecture or a paper and end up spending hundreds or thousands of dollars and many hours to get information that I could comprehend and use with only minutes of time were it easily available. I proposed that the world literature (at least the last 10 years) be loaded into a databank (in English) where it could be accessed by hyperlinks or other mechanism that allows one to go right to the information desired without reading 10,000 full articles. This would be a massive undertaking, but once done, the database could be kept up to date with maybe only a few hundred programmers. Medical schools, hospitals and doctors could subscribe to this database (I would pay $5,000 a year myself for such access).
I believe that if a physician could have ready access at his fingertips to the newest medical knowledge, then the average doctor could be a super-doctor. If the doctors are too lazy, sell access to the patient for a particular medical condition and they could determine if they are receiving state-of-the-art therapy for their conditions.
I have seen patients waste money and time (months or years even) trying to obtain treatment that is effective, only to finally find a knowledgable doctor after three of four tries.
I realize that this is a software problem, but hardware would be needed to use this program. I contacted the best known software GURU first and was ignored, so I thought that Michael Dell may have an interest.
Sincerely,
Maurice Henry Van Strickland, M.D., F.A.A.A.A.I., F.A.C.A.A.I., F.A.A.P., A.C.P. , A.M.A.A., Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of Kansas School of Medicine, Wichita, Kansas

Provide Solaris as an Option
Operating Systems, Servers and Storage submitted by psa
07/07/07
It'd be really nice if Solaris was provided as an option as well.
Solaris is one of the strongest server platforms available and makes great use of 64 bit CPUs. While it's really a must on the server side, it'd also be a solid option to supply for desktops.

Dell list out service requirements for you computer systems like auto makers do for cars.
Service and Support submitted by jorge

Dell provide your customers with service interval requirements/recommendations for their computer systems. Much like auto makers list out service intervals for their automobiles, Dell list out required/recommended service intervals for computer systems! ------------------------------------------------------------------------... Auto:
-------------------------------------------------------------------... Computer:
??????? What do we need to do? To keep our computers in tip top shape! ???????? ------------------------------------------------------------------------...
Dell here's your chance to not only help customers but have an angle to get customers to pay you do to the service! How ingenious! (of me) Imagine the revenue! It could pay for the Hummer in one week! And the Gas!

Frequent Buyers Program
Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by sgrabinar

I've nought two Dell notebooks in the last 7 years. Now, I'm wondering if I should be buying an XPS. Or a cute little iBook .
Maybe I should look at the Sony and Tosh too.
If that 4th or 5th Dell notebook were free...
If I could use my Amex or Qanats reward points at the Dell store _in conjunction_ with my previous Dell purchases....
Michael, all my bases would belong to you.

Notification about updates to product lines
Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by brutten
07/09/07
As a reseller of a fair amount of Dell’s products it would be really nice to be notified of major changes in the product lines before they hit the web page. Maybe a mailing list?
CUSTOMER: “I really like this laptop will you order me five more?”
ME: “Sure, I will order them today!”
DELL: “That model has been replaced with XXX”
ME: “Hello customer that model is not available anymore let’s start over from the new product lines.”
CUSTOMER: “Hmm, what has changed... options, price, specs etc...
ME: “Arrgh!”

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site
Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw
07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.
I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.
If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.
Thanks
This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!

Modular Webcam, any one?
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by kschang
06/28/07
Not the next best thing since sliced bread for sure... but... Think about it...
One of the problems with webcam is mounting, and the fact that it's a separate piece of hardware.
Perhaps it's time to introduce a small port on the top of the screen, where a special webcam can be added later? This can be done to all laptops and notebooks. On models without the option, it's just a piece of plastic cover. On models with the option, it's a rotatable webcam with webcam, almost a snap-in installation.
You can put the SAME PORT on the next generation of LCD monitors. Home PC's need webcams too, albeit they may not need it "built-in" as much as notebooks and laptops, but they'll need them sooner or later. And having them built into the monitor should even accelerate their acceptance.
Sony's VAIO line of home PCs already have several models with built-in webcams. Extremely slick and stylish, but they're not modular. In fact, nobody else offers a modular webcam that fits into a monitor (or a notebook) that I can think of.

Two PCs in one box (I don't mean dual/quad core)
Desktops and Laptops submitted by si
06/28/07
1 box which contains two seperate personalities:
If you want to do light work like surfing the web and/or downloading files then press the green power-on button. This powers up a very simple processor, a reduced area of your LCD monitor, a light version of Windows/Linux and storage running on solid state memory e.g. memory stick. This means e.g. you can leave your big file downloads running while only using a fraction of the normal power required.
If you want to do heavy processing work then press the normal power-on button. This powers up all the things that eat power like 100% of your big LCD screen, fast processors/multi processors, HDDs, DVDs, high-end graphics cards and all the associated cooling fans etc.
Ideally the eco processor can even add an extra boost to the performance system when needed. What do you think?

Slot Loading Drives
Laptops submitted by drew08867
06/28/07
All dell notebooks should be fitted with slot loading drives similar to the macbook, ps3, and the recently released XPS 1330. They are less prone to damage, slimmer, and all together cooler. It fits with the direction dell is going. The new inspiron line is fantastic! Great job Dell!

Dell offer a Networkless Computer
Broadband and Mobility, New Product Ideas submitted by jorge
06/20/07
Dell offer a networkless computer. Many of your customers are not ready for the World Wide Web, in fact they're scared of the WWW (as we'll call it for short), these customers are not buying computers due to the fact that they all come with networking which will facilitate it to be connected to the WWW. Offering networkless computers will open up sales to these customers who would otherwise not purchase a computer due to being on the WWW. As they are not on the WWW nor will they get on the WWW we need to offer them a voice!

The Option to Preinstall Alternative Browsers
Software submitted by gossymer
06/20/07
When it comes to browsers, people are beginning to understand that there is a choice beyond Internet Explorer. Provide them with that choice when they buy their computer.
Let them choose if they want to install Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Safari (for PC) etc.
The reason I mention several alternative browsers is because, it really depends on the country.
America likes Firefox as an alternative while Europe seems to be just as interested in Opera. Then there is Safari for PCs which is making some waves- might be worth it to provide an option for it once the final version is released.
When it comes to tech news, browsers are making a lot of noise. This is an easy way for Dell to use that to its advantage.
NOTE: This is not more bloatware! The buyer decides if they want an alternative browser. Otherwise nothing extra is installed.

DellConnect (download via FTP)
Broadband and Mobility, Service and Support, Software submitted by sysace
06/20/07 **REVIEWED**
DellConnect - Please make this tool available via FTP (public or private) rather than just via http protocol. This would make remote troubleshooting sessions much easier for browser related issues.
Currently I have to download an alternate browser (Firefox) via dos mode ftp, complete installation, then use that to download DellConnect client software... a direct ftp link would decrease handle time and increase CE in my opinion.
FTP is an option we are considering. Check out what andrea_l, DellConnect program manager has to say.

Dell remove all Browsers from any OS you offer.
Operating Systems, Software submitted by jorge
06/20/07
Dell no one wants bloatware as can be seen by the plethora of Ideas and votes against bloatware. One which has been left off the list previously is Browsers! Remove all browsers from any OS you offer, its removal also prevents any additional add-on from working so kills two with one un-install. While you're at it get rid of that pesky calculator! Its eating up my disk space.

Offer upgrades
Sales Strategies submitted by packof5
06/20/07
I think Dell is missing out on alot of sales. I have a Dell, I like my Dell, but I would like to upgrade my Dell. All I get in the mail is ads and more ads for new Dells. Why would I buy a new Dell so soon after buying one for myself and one for my son. What I would buy is a screen upgrade, maybe a harddrive upgrade, batteries, etc. I am also in the market for a screen upgrade for my desktop. As a loyal Dell purchaser I feel I'd like to stay with Dell and buy more Dell equipment, but there is no easy way to to upgrade. Dell needs to market upgrades and make them easliy available to their customers at reasonble prices to keep them in the family. If I can't upgrade easily, next time I won't buy a Dell. I'll buy a more market-support friendly computer. Offer me upgrades at good prices and I'll stay. In the meantime, save your advertising dollars (you'll need them to pay off Semel) and quit sending me the ads.
