Dell's Website must work with Firefox running on Linux

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by qgonjon 07/16/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

It's discouraging to have a Tier 1 vendor (Dell) selling Linux products and yet not really tailoring to Linux. Don't get me wrong Dell, I am not trying to take away all the good you have done. Offering Linux is a step in the right direction and I would like to see more steps taken in a monthly or quarterly basis. But, it seems that the basis for your current Linux promotion is for the Open Source enthusiast like me. I use Linux at home and at work as my main operating system. I use Firefox as my browser and I'm trying to order a Dell Inspiron 1420N. However, it seems that the embedded flash script that shows the different colors choices for the Inspiron is not working under Linux. It also shows that I can't see the different images thereafter. It works with Windows running Firefox as my vmware machine verified. But that is not the type of user that will most likely purchase a Linux laptop.

My request is simple. Can someone fix and verify that this page works well with Linux browser technology? So, that users can enjoy purchasing your Linux products and demonstrate that Dell really cares about their customer's operating system preference.

Dell I wish you the best in this venture as your success in this territory will help the Linux Desktop become a reality to the open source community.

The Dell Experience, Reloaded | on Linux & Windows

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 07/17/07 **IN PROGRESS**

Offer as an OPTION on all Dell PCs a well-chosen collection of add-on software, "Dell's best picks", including Dell visual themes and other software settings.

- Create a unique and distinguishable Dell look & feel (like Apple has done)

- Use advanced interface design with transparency, compositing, 3D effects, etc.

- Make it slick, polished, dead-easy to use and well integrated (e.g. make Vista look better than Microsoft has done)

- Make the Dell software pack look & feel similar on Linux, Windows XP and Vista

- Offer the Dell software pack on all new PCs, and for download for old Dell PCs and competitors' PCs

- Promote Dell software and services such as Online Backup & PC TuneUp

- Deliver updates for drivers and ALL other bundled software

- Include other rich online applications, with Firefox add-ons and themes

- Generate extra revenue with subscriptions, extended theme galleries, thematic tie-ins to movies, music, toys, and other consumer stuff (e.g. Spiderman™ theme by Dell™, etc.)

- Allow the user to easily revert to OS-default settings, and back again (with one click!)

- Allow the user to selectively choose to enable/disable each component (like Google Pack has done)

- Allow the user to select between profiles such as "Simple", "Family", "Power User", and "Custom"

- Set a high standard for any software to become part of the Dell software pack (e.g. components must be well-behaved and not popup-infested crapware)

- Make clear distinctions for each component whether it is open source, proprietary freeware, proprietary trialware, subscription-ware, etc.

- Make clear the impact on system resources for each component (e.g. startup items, estimated percentage of use of system resources such as memory, storage, CPU, network, etc.)

Improve linux notebook line

Linux, Laptops submitted by della 07/19/07

Hi. I actually use a macbook with Ubuntu Fesisty Fawn on it.
I would be *very* pleased to switch to Dell cause:
1. I will not pay for a OS, MacOSX, that I do not use.
2. A Dell with Ubuntu preinstalled works out of the box while the macbook has to be configured and not everything is possible.
3. I would be happy to support a company that has been the first to make a choice that I consider important.

But something retains me to do so:
1. linux dell notebook are not sell outside US
2. dell notebook are ugly to see. Come on guys, a macbook is very beautiful. Is not a matter of "cool" vs "serious", is about "beautiful" and "ugly". We spend a lot of money in technology, we spend the most of our days in front of a notebook, we want that it is powerful and beautiful and comfortable and so on.
3. linux dell notebook linup have poor choice, I need at least a model with a serious graphic card (nvidia or ati) with it's own memory, a integrated camera and such things. I am sure you are already working on this, just my +1 here.

This is my thoughts.
I hope I could buy a dell notebook in Europe soon :) 5 Comments »

XPS M1330 needs to be more price competitive with Apple Macbook

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by hephaestus 07/04/07

I was looking over the recently introduced Dell XPS M1330 notebook, which was so clearly introduced to compete with Apple's Macbook, and I noticed there's a significant cost delta for what seems like little difference in offerings. If you compare the base model Macbook at 2.0GHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD, it's $1,174 and a comparably equipped Dell M1330 is $1,474. What's the deal? They don't look much different on paper. Is it Vista driving up the cost? I'd rather have OS X and my $300. Dell needs to be competitive in both product quality and price. 9 Comments »

Two-finger scroll

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by hephaestus 07/04/07

The Apple Macbooks have a two-finger scroll, which is fabulous. You don't have to grab the scrollbar of your web browser or arrow down. You just use two fingers on the touchpad and the page automatically scrolls. This seems like such a simple, but wonderfully convenient feature, it should be standard on all Dell notebooks. 8 Comments »

Offer 8400M GT on the XPS M1330 not the current GS Version!

XPS products submitted by tolkan 07/10/07

The Why offer the GS Which is much weaker than the GT Version. By offering the GT version the M1330 would be the best of performance and work. Considering that the 8400M GT is referred to as an under clocked 8600M GS. I really want to purchase the XPS M1330 so please Promote this. If there is currently another idea on this topic please do tell me so i can promote.

Thank You In Advanced...

Linux Kicked Out of the Spotlight

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by daniel117 07/03/07

At the release of a line of computers with Linux, they put Linux in the banner on the home page, but after that, it's like they put Linux in the back room of the website, with other old links in the stinky, old, cobweb-filled room. The only way you can access the Linux link is by only typing in "Linux" or "Ubuntu" or "FreeDOS" in the "Search" box (a.k.a. where you type searches). Dell should make a link for this product, or they would not really see profit in this, because it wouldn't be popular by not being in the front page, and you know what this means (out the window it goes)! 3 Comments »

TV Commercial for New Ubuntu PCs

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by josmar52789 05/03/07

Dell should produce a new commercial for the Ubuntu PCs. It could tell the consumers of America why Dell has chosen to pre-install Linux on mainstream computers and hopefully promote the advantages of this new endeavor. Plus, it's likely that Dell's Linux initiative would be much more successful. 117 Comments »

Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage

Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com)

When I go to dell.com and I search for the product model numbers I never can find them I have to go to the other page and then I see it. The only thing I saw on the main page is a small flash ad which then takes you to the page.

Why cant you place these models with the other models on your page.........

Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops

Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol 05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops.

Shop Dell PCs with Linux. Require more visibility!

Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by yesmathew 06/01/07

More visibility required for "Shop Dell PCs with Linux" while shopping Windows PCs!

Checked this morning at USA > Home & Home Office. Very less to no visibility on selling Linux based PCs. Unless one accidentally lands at Linux page.

Request to add links on all Windows based PC pages saying " Shop Dell PCs with Linux* "

Dell with Opensuse (not only Ubuntu )

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by xhen 06/01/07

I have read recently about this new idea of DELL which is perfect, but in my opinion (working as IT manager On Veolia environment for 8 years) I think dell should try opensuse instead of ubuntu, I think is more easy for the Final User who need to change from windows to Linux.
With opensuse you needn´t run any sudo command (ok sometimes yes but are less) to install things like ubuntu.
In my personal opinion and after my own experience, recently (i´m not very familiarize with linux) I have spent 5 days trying to install ubuntu in one computer and finally I have decided to give it up and install again Opensuse 10.2 which is more efficient for the final user and more friendly.

I hope Dell give us more options not only ubuntu, especially nowadays when Microsoft and Novell have made a deal to get a better relationship between Opensuse and Windows (actually a better relation of windows with Linux-Opensuse not on the contrary), I think this would be one of the most important distribution of Linux for companies which want to change windows for Linux.

Best Regards ;)

Go ahead with more Points!!! 12 Comments »
