Stop Stifling Sales to Non-Profit Corporations

Dell Web Site submitted by dralphesq 02/17/07

Your automated web site for sales makes sales of computers to non-profit corporations nearly impossible. No, not schools. The local Red Cross, charitable foundations, legal aids, poverty groups, local art societies, etc. These are not schools. They are not profit making businesses. They do in fact exist, in large numbers, and they do business that requires computing. Yet, your site makes it impossible to submit sales tax exemption certificates, makes individuals render up their personal credit cards, charges sales tax (illegally some would argue), and then makes it impossible to talk to a human being to remedy any of that. What is the problem here? You don't want the business? You want to make it so unpleasant that the business, and the bad taste in one's mouth, are taken to a different vendor?

Our experience was horrible. To the point that we do not wish to come back under those circumstances.

It is simple. Take the business of supplying non-profits. Make it easy to take our money and render up your product. Others do. Why not Dell? 2 Comments »

out of the box -- let me return box for reuse

Environment submitted by howardnyc 02/17/07

issue: reduce -- reuse -- recycle

if you build the shipping box a little thicker, and provide a return address sticker many of us would be happy to return the box to you for reuse....

despite the added shipping charges, you would save money and demonstrate to the world you are indeed "lean 'n green" by reversing the ‘waste stream’

this would be especially true for those corporations purchasing ten (10) or fifty (50) or thousands (1000’s) of new computers all at the same time. . .

heck I could see an entire truckload of stuff getting picked up three days after being dropped off . . .

FYI: corporations in New York City are oft times zapped with special handling fees to dispose of boxes 16 Comments »

Dell true mini-sized desktop

Desktops submitted by jerbl 02/17/07

I suggest that Dell design and sell a true mini-sized desktop CPU.
It would be similiar in size, weight and power to the Apple Mac Mini, but with Windows software.
Customers who buy a LCD or Plasma TV also prefer a CPU with a small footprint. 34 Comments »

Openmanage working with other than RPM-based distributions (e.g. Debian)

Servers and Storage submitted by mkretzer 02/20/07

Today Dell Openmanage (which is the administrative tool to administer Dell Poweredge Servers) is only available on Windows an Linux RPM-based systems.

Debian is used on many comany servers because of its stability and regard as „rock solid“. There is yet no solution for managing the newest generation of Dell Poweredge Servers on Debian-based systems.

Projects like "Dell OMSA on Debian Sarge" do prove that it should be technicaly no problem.

Exclude Crapware as an Option (AOL, Works, Semantic, etc)

Sales Strategies, Software submitted by maruser 02/20/07

As an IT professional who lives on DELL products, I spend more time uninstalling Crapware (AOL, Works, Semnatic) than installing the software that I actually need. What a waste.

It would be great if customers are given the option to Crapware or not.
Most will opt not to have i.

This should be an all or nothing on the Crapware. 2 Comments »

Sell a $100 laptop

Dell, Education, Sales Strategies submitted by ezrider4428 02/19/07

Although the OLPC program is doing great things, i think that Dell should get involved in North America and help literacy programs and under-privaled kids by offering $100 laptops with subsidies and easy payment options like $9 a month for a year or $1 a month for 100 months. 12 Comments »

Eliminate proprietary parts

Desktops and Laptops submitted by dell_youcandoit 02/17/07

The only reason I would build my own PC rather than purchase one is becase of the proprietary parts and lack of CPU choice. Dell has AMD now, so I would almost buy them if I knew what else was inside. Comment »

Provide machine specification in a well defined format

Dell Web Site, Service and Support submitted by pschulz01 02/19/07

There are several tools under Linux which list the detected hardware of a system and display it in a well defined format.. (available under Ubuntu)

eg. lshw, lspci, lsusb

There are also other methods used to obtain more information about a system, which kernel developers usually ask for when debugging hardware problem..

dmesg, cat /proc/cpuinfo

This information is incredibly useful when looking to see what hardware is supported by Linux, and when deciding what hardware to buy, in particular laptops. It would be very helpful if these details were available on DELL products. (Step 1. Boot the most recent Ubuntu CD. Step 2. Run these command and save the details. Step 3. Publish on the DELL Website.) 3 Comments »

Pre-Installed Gimp Photo Manipulation Software

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by kyle.burton 02/20/07

Include a pre-installed copy of the open source Image Manipulation software: Gimp with windows based installs. In addition to open-office, a photo manipulation package like this would be a useful add on. Including picasa or other on-line image organization applications would be useful as well. 3 Comments »

Ship systems with updated OS...

Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by klubar 02/20/07

Since Dell builds the systems to order, why is the OS always several hundred MB out of date. The most current patches should be applied...so the first thing a new user has to do isnt download 50 or 60 patches and reboot half-a-dozen times. Comment »

donation of old computers

submitted by howardnyc 02/17/07

background: on a daily basis there are thousands of computers rendered obsolete or are abandoned due to replacement

suggest: act as a cnsolidation point for donations of computers which can then be refurbished and shipped to a worthy entity such as a struggling school... here or in the Third World...

suggestion: hook up with work-fare and/or prision training efforts to recruit the hands 'n talent to do the detail work...

Diagnostic CD

Service and Support submitted by joeaguy 02/19/07

Include a hardware diagnostic CD. Put it in, boot up from the cd, and it will scan that all your drives, memory, cards, motherboard, etc, are in working order. Some tools to check and repair NTFS, FAT, and etx3 file systems from the disk, and/or scan for viruses would be great also.

Apple provides hardware diagnostic CDs with many of its computers, and also includes a copy of TechTool, which can do disk repair and includes some preventative maintenance tools, with an AppleCare subscription. Having a report from such a tool really helps with support calls, in saving both support diagnostic time, and saving customers time in getting support to realize there is a real problem.

The diagnostic partition included on many Dell machines is just too easy to get erased if you reinstall your OS. A CD would be an option I'd prefer. 36 Comments »

Extendable Laptop Screen

Monitors and Displays submitted by alokjain 02/18/07

I see two usage in desktop environment that have not seen in Laptop environment so much yet, even though Laptop is increasingly displacing desktops. These are:

A. People keep their LCD monitors in a portrait mode as opposed to standard landscape mode. This ofcourse allows for more vertical space to browse website, work on long documents, write code etc..

Monitor in Portrait Mode

B. Usage of two monitors

Dual Displays

Laptops on other hand so far have been restricted to Landscape mode and a single screen only. I think there is value in bringing the above trends into a laptop as well. Ofcourse it's simpler said than done, and has impact on everything - weight, battery etc.. but those are next level issues. First thing is to think if it makes sense from a customer perspective or not.

First the Idea, so here is an illustration of how this my look:

Folding Laptop

This is ofcourse a very very simplified (oversimplified in many respects) view of the concept, but first thing to explore here is the increased screen size and real estate as that is the end value delivered.

< Screen could be folded to get back to current Laptop design format. In this diagram it looks like the folded screen is unprotected, but that can be easily fixed so that whent he screen actually folds the display side faces inwards as opposed to outwards.

The orientation of the second screen could be horizontal as well:

The Free Mouse Pad - And The Many Reasons It Makes Sense

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by googideas 02/17/07

The consumer buys a computer from Dell. It arrives. Perhaps they have fogotten to get a mouse pad.

Suddenly, even though it is the consumer's mistake, they're angry with Dell. Because a mouse pad is such an inexpensive item (and yet so necessary) it will naturally rankle the customer that one was not provided.

Secondly, the computer crashes. No online help obviously is accessible. The person then wants to cvall Dell. Why not print the Dell hotline number on the mouse pad? This actually, as simple as it sounds, is at the heart of convenience. Do you, Dell, want to add to or alleviate whatever frustration the consumer may be feeling just prior to their calling you?

Thirdly, something free is appreciated by the consumer. You earn brownie points for what is but a 30 cent item, and you can use this as a platofrm for printing quotes, calendars, trivia about Dell, and resources (your various websites).

This is a business card and helpful resource, especially when the computer is down. If it were me I'd print "If you approach our customer service representative politely it'll help speed you along."

Doesn't matter what is printed on it: whatever Dell chooses will be more than what we have now.

Require Publicly available Specifications for your components

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by jd 02/19/07

With the influence you have on the component suppliers, why not require them to provide specifications for the devices to the public? Network cards, video cards, RAID controllers all should have the programming specifications available. The Linux and *BSD groups will flock to the hardware platforms that have documented programming interfaces. It will cost you nothing to implement. Intel, TI and Broadcom, are you willing to lose business? 3 Comments »
