Proximity sensor for keyboard backlight activation on XPS laptops Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by tovare Jun 19
One of my consens with keyboard backlight is that it would light up the PC too much in the dark for instance when watching a DVD. Varius timeout modes from last keyboard activity is clumsy, because then you need to say hit one of the arrow-keys (although it would have been fun to see a keyboard once with an actual ANYKEY). With the pending release of the "Studio" Line of Inspiron notebooks, it appears that Dell is looking to take back the notebook market. There are new design features that put the "Studio" notebooks on par with Macbook Pros... slimmer/update design, slot loading DVD +/- RW and/or Blu-ray drive, BACK LIT keyboard, eSATA drives and a host of color options. Copy new features on the Studio back to the XPS line XPS products submitted by jeopardy Jun 27

I'd like to bring to your attention to a design problem with the Dell XPS M1330 with the nVidia 8400 GS option. Make complete hardware docs freely available Simplify IT submitted by amesbury 07/04/07
One of the historical problems with Dell hardware is that hardware documentation isn't freely available. While the Linux crowd has made significant inroads into addressing this problem by incorporating binary, vendor-supplied drivers into their OS, this approach doesn't work universally for all distributions or, more importantly, for operating systems not recognized by vendors. In particular, I have a strong business need for systems which can run smoothly under FreeBSD, as it fits its role better than Linux (for our purposes; not interested in a "my OS is better than yours" war). The Dell PowerEdge 750 and PE1850 were the last PowerEdge systems I know of which worked flawlessly. In particular, they had Intel NICs and Adaptec RAID hardware, both of which were heavily documented and supported in the Open Source community. The PE860 and PE2950, unfortunately, have Broadcom NICs (in my experience not nearly as well supported and openly documented) and LSI RAID (a.k.a., the PERC 5/i, also not as well supported and openly documented). Laptop Theft is an important concern of many businesses. Even home users often store sensitive information (banking info, "remember your password" browser features, etc) on their computers and could risk identify theft if their laptops are stolen. It's your second chance. Firefox has come out with a gleaming new version of their internet browser. So install it as the default browser before it's too late. Laptop Power submitted by y_eilom Jun 21

I have two batteries I switch back and forth and I always have to charge in the laptop. I know Gateway used to have one about 5-6 years ago but some how the idea died there?? 5 Comments » Hot-swappable laptop batteries. Laptop Power submitted by jmxz May 31
I'd like to be able to swap the battery on my laptop without having to turn it off or hibernate it. It seems you could do this by putting a large capacitor or tiny internal battery that could provide power for the 30 seconds or so it takes to switch to a spare battery. Another way you might be able to do this is instead of having one big battery in each laptop, have 2 small ones instead; and you could swap them one at a time. A conglomeration of metal pipes under sidewalks and parking lots that can be turned on with a simple switch that would melt ice and snow to keep companies like shopping centers, dentist and doctors offices from getting sued if someone should fall. New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by mostlyharmless22 May 13 Eee 900 PC and HP Mini-Note 2133 are selling like hotcakes and just about every other laptop manufacturer in existence has released tentative specs for a low-cost sub-notebook. Meanwhile, Dell drags its feet on releasing specs for its own. If you read the blogs, there are multitudes who want to wait to see what Dell comes out with but are losing patience and buying the new Eee or, if they aren't worried about mechanical hard drives, the HP Mini-Note. Every single Eee 900 or Mini-Note sold is a sale that Dell coud have had. Very bad idea. 13 Comments » New Product Ideas, Software submitted by nivek Jul 1 Dell needs to be ready for the O-LED technology. Work with Microsoft to have the most compatible Drivers and Software for touch-screens made from O-LED's. By the time Windows 7 comes out, O-LED's will be cheep enough for everyone to use them as wallpaper, then you could have your computer screen on all the walls of your house! If Dell and Microsoft partner and work together, Windows 7 will be the best Operating System to Run your O-LED wallpaper on. Just think, you could take your finger, draw a square on the wall, and choose if you want it to be a digital window or a Television! If Dell and Microsoft can recognize this amazing concept and work as a team, the competition (including Apple, Sony, Toshiba, and more) will not stand a chance and be forced out of business. 4 Comments » Off switch for touchpad on notebooks Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by jscottd 02/23/07 All of my users would love the ability to turn off the touch pad. I've alrady posted this idea but it wasn't very explicit : Dell E Slim with NON-glossy panel Monitors and Displays submitted by happymaster23 Jun 15
I have falled in love to new Dell E lineup and Dell E Slim specially. This product looks superb, with no badness, but I found one - this is glossy panel. I hate glossy panels, so Dell please make customization selection between glossy or non-glossy. LED Backlit Displays for Higher Resolutions for XPS M1530 Monitors and Displays, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by whitefrost May 14 The release of the LED backlit 1440 x 900 display is great, but needs to be expanded to higher resolutions most notably the 1680 x 1050 resolution which a large number of people use and are most comfortable with. It would not be a threat to the M1730 as you can keep the LED Full HD 1920 x 1200 for it alone. 5 Comments » If Apple is poised to take Microsoft down...
