Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)
OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program

ReactOS Development

Although I probably wouldn't offer ReactOS as an installed or even installable opton for Dell at this time, Dell would probably benefit within the Open Source community if they put their support behind the ReactOS project. The code has been found to be clean of MS proprietary code, and yet the system is very much on its way to being MS compatible. Dell does not need to provide ReactOS anything more than visibility and possible drivers for their hardware. With more visibility many disgruntled MS developers may find a new home with ReactOS. And hopefully ReactOS can develop the best open source support community around. Once the project and community have matured to a point of supporting more wide spread distribution then Dell would be prime for offering them as an install option for MS users looking for a 'free' change. (Free of so much bloat.)

Keep up with Santa Rosa & HP

HP has come out with a 14", 15.4", and 17" personal Santa Rosa laptops.
Dell has yet to announce Santa Rosa personal laptops while HP has gone on a Santa Rosa Blitz. All of the Santa Rosa laptops so far come with only an integrated video card (Nvidias have already been announced) which out does all of the Dell non-integrated Inspiron video cards.
I really do want a Dell. The reputaition and my past experiences have left me addicted to the machines. But...
HPs have Dell beat in so many ways recently.
HPs are smaller/lighter, better battery life, cheaper with exactly the same hardware, better version of media direct, button placement makes much more sense, parts are avalible at local electronics stores, microphones on personal computers, accidental warrently is avalible in Florida, and perriphirals are better with HPs. The only thing I dislike about the new HPs are the mouse pad's material and feel.

Similar to the functionality built into the XPS M1210, a set of 3 Stereo Mini-jacks would be highly appreciated. The audio processor and jacks should be capable of the following modes:
1) 5.1 Surround Audio
2) Stereo Out x 3
3) 4.0 Surround Audio / Line In
4) Dual Stereo Out / Line In
5) Stereo Out / Mic In / Line In
FURTHER EXPLAINED:
Two of the Jacks (B+C) should serve as high-quality DACs and ADCs, capable of both output and input:
(A+B+C) Stereo 24-bit/96kHz 104dB+ Digital to Analog Converters
(B+C) Stereo 24-bit/96kHz 100dB+ Analog to Digital Converters (Line/Mic In)
FINALLY:
The SoundBlaster Audigy/X-Fi Software Edition should be capable of delivering EAX 5.0 in full 5.1 Surround, and delivering ASIO 2.0 Recording for 4 Audio channels (2 x Stereo via Jacks B & C).

Proper Professional Ports for Notebooks

I am asking for proper ports on Dell Notebooks - specifically the XPS and Precision series. This includes:
- One 6-pin Firewire 400 Port &
- One 9-pin Firewire 800 Port (Both with Texas Instruments 1394 Controllers)
- Dual eSATA Ports (RAID Capable)
The current integrated 4-pin 1394 Ports are incredibly inconsistent and unreliable for 3rd party Audio/Video Interfaces. I have an $2700 Inspiron 9400 that is incapable of working correctly with M-Audio and Presonus Firewire products.
SCRAP Ricoh and O2Micro Controllers - They DON'T do the job!
eSATA is the fastest standard for external storage, Dell should be taking advantage of this.

Become the open source OEM

I read the same question on Linux forums, all the time: What is the best brand of computer/laptop to purchase for Linux. I know that there is the n series of computers and notebooks, but it could go a step further. Accept the recent offer of free Linux driver development from the Linux Kernel Community so that DELLs "just work" with Linux. Maybe look at some ideas like LinuxBIOS and/or OpenBIOS. Become the OEM that everyone recommends. There is a growing market for Open Source friendly computers and DELL could own that market.

I have a XP Pro retail copy, will soon buy retail vista, I also like Linux: Make WINDOWS-FREE, and OS-Free an option for more than just expensive business lines.

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.

Do away with 512MB of memory as a base option to buy consumer desktops and notebooks. With Vista running best on 1GB at a minimum, don't make customers have a basic experience with the new OS because Dell wants to be able to advertise at a lower price point. The success of Vista -- and subsequently for Dell -- will be largely in word of mouth. Take a long-term view and build the momentum one great customer experience at a time right now!

No Discs Included (Included In Price)
All Discs Included (this means everything -- all software discs -- OS/Security software/etc., and all driver discs -- this means Windows or Linux drivers or both, whatever applies -- add $0)
Other options (OS disc only, all software discs only, driver discs only, etc. -- add $0)
For some computers, Dell does not include the reinstallation discs. Even if Dell offers them, Dell charges extra for us to get them. In fact, the only time I seen reinstallation discs being offered without charge were for Dell XPS desktops with the flashy lights -- that is, the Dell XPS 600, 700, and 710 systems, for those ware the only systems to offer operating system options like "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center WITH REINSTALLATION CD".
Also, most of the time when software reinstallation discs are not included, driver reinstallation discs (such as XPS flashy lights, as well as printers and monitors) are not included either. Therefore, don't just include the software reinstallation discs -- include as well the Windows/Linux drivers for the hardware (depending on the OS purchased with the computer, if any, which in turn depends on the user's preferences).
Besides, Microsoft as well as ALL software companies include the discs when you get the software seperately, so why can't Dell do the same when the software is preinstalled...?
Customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media.

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
