Increasing laptop performance

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by markeread Jul 30

Focusing on some performance fundamentals, can Dell push to increase the following metrics (specifically around precisions workstation laptops):

Larger SSDs
Hybrid configurations including SSD and spindles
64-bit configurations including support for 16-96GB RAM
numeric keypads
faster graphics
latest intel chips (why lag so much?)
memory that matches the FSB speed of the chips

I know I'm pushing a lot of thermal and battery limits, but I would rather lug around 10 lbs than sacrifice ANYperformance. 2 Comments »

Eliminate Slip Sheets, excess paper

Environment, Desktops and Laptops submitted by daytraitors Jul 30

Glossy slip sheets that show us how to unpack computers and plug them in seems a bit excessive.

You can probably accomplish the same thing by printing the graphical instructions directly on the cardboard box!

Also, is it really necessary to include paper documentation with every computer? It's a computer! Digitize your documentation, and load it into the PC!

This might require that you pre-load Adobe Acrobat Reader, but that's something that you should be doing anyway. If that's an issue, then there's always HTML! 1 Comment »

Always prefer DEDICATED Graphics Card Laptops

Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by it-professional Jul 30

If you are buying new laptop for Home or Office I suggest you to buy laptop with dedicated graphics card so that you can run Windows Vista smoothly as well as you can do Graphics work as well as playing games too... If you buy Inspirion 1525 please request for dedicated graphics card 1st...
LAPTOP without Dedicated Graphics card is worthless and meaningless if you want to use it for Study or Project work... as well as also I recommended for 15.4" rather than 14" or 17"
Thanks...All the Best

Back-lit Logo on Lid - Make as an option

Advertising and Marketing, Laptops submitted by nazukeoya Jul 30

Like Apple and Alienware, make the Dell logo back-lit as an option on laptop lids.

In addition, add the option to attach your own created logo to your order to make as a back-lit logo on the lid of your laptop.

It would add a charge to the order price but WELL WORTH IT.

This would be so rad...especially the option to customize the logo you have on the lid. too too cool. Comment »

Axims as WiFI Phone

Broadband and Mobility submitted by sirebral Jul 30

Apple has the iPhone, and Microsoft has the laughable Zune. Maybe DELL could enter into the market with a PDA that connects via WiFi and offers WiFi phone service. Leave the Cell Phone out of it and pack more hardware into it for a more enjoyable experience.

This might be a way to upgrade the Axim Line.

I'm asking that you don't use Windows Mobile. Instead, get a Linux Light package with Pidgin, then work on a Pidgin update so that we can access VoIP. Add Skype and Vonage, and maybe even Pidgin access to Skype and Vonage, and you could cover just about everyone.

With Skype and Vonage the user can decide if they want to add friends to their list for free calls anywhere, or if they want to cough up the extra for the service.

WiFi is going to turn into the new cell phone someday. 3 Comments »

Small form factor no frills computer

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Small Business, Desktops and Laptops submitted by bknfla Jul 31

We need a low cost, no frills computer for our call center and rest of the business. Combine the small features of a laptop with a desktop. We do not need a CD-rom. We do not need any speakers, we only need USB ports, to plug headset with a microphone into, and if speakers were needed, they could be plugged into an usb port. If possible, make the keyboard and mouse wireless, if not make keyboard have multiple usb ports so that mouse and headphone/microphone could plug into the keyboard.

If mouse/keyboard/headset with microphone could all be wireless and be able to sit in close proximity with other computers that would be icing on the cake. If all we had to do was, plug monitor into computer and plug the computer up to power that would be amazing!

We need at least 1 gig of ram but 2 would be nice (so we do not have to upgrade the machine for a while. Quiet or no fan would be nice. The computer should be as small as possible, a mounting bracket for under the desk. USB ports need to be able to be turned on an off via the bios so that if we wanted to disable a USB port so people could not plug in anything else we could.

If it had a built in battery backup similar to a laptop so we did not have to put a UPS at the desktop that would be great as well. This would allow the machine to shut down gracefully during power outage or make it through a power surge.

Thank you 12 Comments »

By that it'll be powerful, not heavy one, optimal screen size & combines the benefits of the XPS & Latitude laptops. 3 Comments »

What's in a name...?

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by anji Jul 31

Everything! And if Dell wants to push sales for their MP3 players, or any other small handheld, they need to get with the times. DJ Ditty? Is this supposed to appeal to the young-ish crowd that is the main purchaser of such things? Nope. I say, hold a contest, open to the public, of course; and give some of the products away as an incentive for the best name(s). Who better to name a product than those who use them? 4 Comments »

Choice of the graphic card

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by enibas Jul 31

For the XPS M1530, we can't chose a graphic card other than 8600 mGT. I think it could me good, given that this card as a default of made, we have the choice to take a 8700 mGT or 8800 mGT.

What do you think about it? Do you agree with me?

OEM Win XP Drivers for VISTA only computers

Operating Systems submitted by calvindoth Jul 31

Dell should make OEM Windows XP drivers available for all Vista only computers, with the stipulation that Dell does not support Windows XP on these systems. To get any Warranty or Support the customer must have a Dell Diagnostic code if Windows XP is on the computer. 3 Comments »

Can we get Studio Hybrid with Ubuntu?

Desktops, Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by arhere Aug 1

I LOVE the new Studio Hybrid PC's. Can we get it preinstalled with Ubuntu? This would drop the price even more and be a GREAT PC for surfing the Web and such.

If you say no to this idea, can we at least get a "Ubuntu capable" certification for the hardware?

1680x1050 LED Backlit screens for XPS 1530

Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by middlep1 Jul 30

Isn't about time Dell started to filter more LED backlit screens into the mainstream, I've grown accustomed to using 1680x1050 15.4" laptop screens over of having 2 Dell and 1 Asus laptops with that resolution, 1920X1200 on a 15.4" is just silly, 1680X1050 is just perfect for my web design and development usage, and LED backlights would be perfect as well, I'd even go as far as paying a extra (modest) premium for the privilage. Pay Attention To Our Ideas!

IdeaStorm, Software submitted by aikiwolfie Jul 29

Using the new "Top Ideas" feature I tracked all the top rated ideas from the highest voted to 0 points. From page 1 to page 400. On every single page there were a healthy number of ideas relating to Linux, Ubuntu, OpenOffice.org, Firefox and free open source software in general.

The highest voted Linux/FOSS idea had 151870 points and the lowest had 9 points. I'm sure there are other with negative votes in the remaining 79 pages. But most of those ideas were about Microsoft products. Windows XP, Vista, Microsoft Works and Office. The remainder were hardware related, things Dell just can't do or non-idea threads.

Sure this must tell Dell something about the demand for free open source software on Dell PCs? The highest voted idea of all time here on IdeaStorm is Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot with 151870 points. In fact the entire first page is all about Linux, FOSS and no trial ware. That theme continues all the way through IdeaStorm to page 400.

So when we ask for more Linux support and better FOSS support please don't fob us off with the old "supply and demand" excuse. There is plenty of demand amongst the Dell consumer base to warrant treating Ubuntu as an equal to Windows.

  1. Please put Ubuntu in the OS list and let people make a proper informed choice.

  2. Please let people deselect pre-installed software they do not want. Including the OS.

  3. Allow people to buy bare hardware.

  4. Give us a choice of web browser, e-mail client and office productivity software beyond Microsoft!

We were told if we voted for it, we would get it!

Non-Glare High Resolution LED Displays

Monitors and Displays, XPS products, Vostro products submitted by anonym Jul 18

Please stop the glossy display nonsence and provide a non-glare display options for all models. If possible with LED backlight, because it is brighter, thinner and less power consuming. I like the XPS M1330 very much, but the glossy display is a real show stopper...

Btw, the glossy finish of the Vostro 1310 case also seems quite pointless to me. 14 Comments »
