How about another update on the highest voted ideas.

IdeaStorm submitted by jmxz Jun 19

It seems many of the highest voted Ideas are the most neglected by Dell

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office (currently with 138079 points) has been one of the top-5-highest-voted Ideas on IdeaStorm since Feb 07. It has no "Status" regarding whether it's in progress, or rejected; and the only comments from Dell were just one employee's personal opinion.

No OS Preloaded (with 85050 points), has also been one of the top-5-highest for over a year. It's status is the same partial implementation (available on a couple models) that has been true from Dell since long before IdeaStorm was around (2004, if I recall). Clearly the Idea is popular because people want to see it on more models. Rather than just labeling the Idea as "partially implemented as always" - could you give some update on the progress on this Idea.

Firefox instead of IE (with 115593 points) has also been a top-5 idea for over a year. With the recent release of FireFox 3 - along with great press from the technology and business industry alike, another update on this idea would be very welcome. The recent Forbes article Why Firefox Matters clearly sees Firefox as the industry leader, and Wall Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal explicitly states that Firefox 3.0 Is the Best Browser for Web. Surely Dell would want to offer the best for their customers, no? 41 Comments »

Don't put the Dell logo upside down on the Mini Inspiron

Laptops submitted by jervis961 May 29

I didn't notice this last night as I was checking out the pictures of the new Dell Mini but it was pointed out by JamesWeb on Dell's "yourblog" that the Dell logo is upside down.

Please don't leave the logo like that, it looks bad. 52 Comments »

No more plastic wrap, please

Environment submitted by falbert May 22

In the last shipment of computers I received I was shocked by the amount of plastic wrap used for items like power cords, USB cables, VGA/DVI cables. Do these items really need to be individually wrapped in a plastic bag. I can just imagine the tons of plastic used by Dell annually...

5 minute "battery backup" on notebooks to allow fast main battery switching

Laptop Power submitted by hjwasson 04/23/07

I would like to see Dell notebook computers incorporate a small internal battery that would allow users to quickly swap out their depleted primary battery with a fresh one - without having to power off or hibernate the notebook first. Hibernation sometimes fails on resume (although far less often than Standby), and shutdown/reboot takes too long when you're in the middle of an important meeting. I've been told that Apple MacBooks allow you to swap out batteries without shutting down first.

Another alternative would be to have hot-swappable module device bays that would allow placing a secondary battery in the bay (in place of the optical drive). This is done on the IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad line of notebooks. If the notebook could run off the secondary battery while the primary battery was being swapped, that would be fine, too. 20 Comments »

This 1 watt (1/10 watt when Idle) CPU does look interesting.

Environment, Servers and Storage submitted by jmxz 08/26/07

Yes, I know all the other VIA CPU ideas seem to be voted down, but this 1-watt (1/10 watt when idle) 500MHz CPU looks very promising. VIA also apparently has the most power-efficient motherboard.

With all the talk of many people getting always-on home-servers in the future, a 0.1-Watt-when-idle CPU in a fanless system sounds like a great environmentally friendly platform to base home-server products on.

===================================================
Dell - please stay focused on the highest-voted ideas, though. Don't distract yourselves with this one until you've addressed these ideas which have been the top-ranked ideas for many months without adequate responses..

XPS ONE UPGRRADE

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, XPS products submitted by mike2912 May 2

I want a 1900x1200 24 inch screen. What is the point of blue ray if you can't watch it on a full HD screen. I would also like 45 nm intel processors. 2 Comments »

Higher Screen Resolution for Vostro 1310

Monitors and Displays, Vostro products, Laptops submitted by ccpljat May 3

I know it is a 13.1" screen. But can't you put a higher resolution on it? I want a thinner and lighter notebook, but I can't sacrifice my screen resolution. It would take away from my productivity. That is what we are all after...right? 4 Comments »

Drop the Inspiron line of notebooks

Laptops submitted by canadaboy May 5

caveat: I'm writing this from an Inspiron 9400

I'm checking through all the laptop brands I can find on the Dell.ca website (as grouped by Dell on the site):

XPS Gaming Laptops
XPS Laptops
Inspiron Laptops
Vostro Laptops
Latitude Laptops
Dell Percision Mobile
Alienware Laptops (not on the site, but now made by Dell)
A ruggedized version (not sure under what line)

That's 7 (or 8) laptop brands, and I wouldn't mind less brands (many are very very similar, older Vostro's were essentially Inspirons in dull clothing).

I suggest removing the Inspiron as the XPS models effectively fill the same role, are new, and look nice. Create the 1730 XPS and retire the Inspiron line.

I was hoping for the Inspiron line, because I've used it as my budget gaming/office computer (the 9400 still has a good video card compared to current models), but it looks from your releases that the Inspiron line isn't getting high end gaming video cards. So please put them into the XPS line, and streamline your offering.

My suggested breakdown -

Consumer Budget:
Vostro

Consumer Primary Brands:
XPS
XPS Gaming

Consumer High-End:
Alienware

Business Standard:
Vostro

Business Specialized:
Latitude Laptops
Dell Percision Mobile 7 Comments »

PORTA

New Product Ideas submitted by brianahier May 5

I would like for Dell to develop an ultra-portable (maybe named the Porta :-) that is roughly the size of a smartphone which has the processing power of a good laptop, and can also function as a telephone. This device might also have the ability to connect to a dock at the base of a monitor which would also allow for network connectivity and peripheral attachments. I would replace my three desktop computers with this device. Of course, I could back up the device “in the cloud” and carry my computer with me everywhere… 6 Comments »

Make a laptop power supply that doesn't stink

Laptop Power submitted by eauxnguyen 02/18/07

Each of the four Dell laptops I have owned all sit gathering dust with failed power supplies. This might be acceptable if it were one or even two of them. The most recent are two Dell Inspiron 8600's I bought for my kids 3 years ago. Both of the 8600 power supplies died at two years of service. If we wiggle the cord just right at the brick it might work for a bit, then no more. I bought one more power supply new and it failed too. What does it take to make a power supply that just works? My now 7 year old Thinkpad power supply continues to work fine and my kids take it everywhere. It will take quite a bit to convince me to buy a Dell again because of this bad experience.

Bury this as unoriginal if you will but this is probably a truth for quite a few formerly loyal Dell customers. Comment »

Power Supply for XPS

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by arid47 05/08/07

The choice of power supplies is limited for XPS 410 and 210 desktop units. Since Vista can be a very intense system with several peripherals added, I think we need more than a 350w power unit to choose from. Comment »

No propietary power supply/motherboard

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by echohead 02/21/07

Dell has used power supplies with propietary connectors along wth those connectors on the motherboards. This causes two problems--1) If your power supply fails, you have to buy through Dell. and 2) If in the future you want to upgrade your computer with a new motherboard, you can't because the power supply won't connect to it. 1 Comment »

Notebook Power Supply Design

Laptops submitted by kram 03/30/07

For the roadwarriior type, notebook power supplies are such a nuisance, and their design hasn't changed for years. I would gladly pay to upgrade my power supply to one that has an effective and fast way of storing those irritating cords. Spring loaded reel inside the power supply case would be best. And why do you need to provide long lengths of both the AC and DC cords. Why not just have a very short AC cord that could be pushed back into the power supply case, and a much longer DC cord (which is thinner, and easier to store).

The best solution (though I'm guessing not possible with modern notebooks) was that of my old Toshiba, that had the power supply built into the notebook - you just plugged the power cord straight into the back of the notebook.

Or here's another alternative: Have a removable optical drive that can be replaced with a power supply for use on the road. Comment »

Portable power supply

New Product Ideas, Laptop Power submitted by magiting May 5

Hi Mr. Michael Dell,

I would like to suggest if you can make another product line
which is a rechargeable 2.5 inch Li-Ion battery that is a plug-n-play design. I do not have doubts about the batteries that today's laptops have but each brand are making their own design. I wish a USB insert portable power supply would debut in the market sold by Dell which can have a battery power ranging from 2-5hours. This is especially good when in the mountains camping or making seminars in remote areas. It is a path towards standardized portable power supply for laptops.

Thanks,
magiting 4 Comments »

Smaller laptop power supply

Laptops submitted by gunnarlium 04/29/07

I would like a smaller power supply for my ultraportable laptop. Dell's power brick is too big for my taste. Reducing the size would increase portability greatly, since I always bring my power supply to ensure that I don't run out of power.

Apple has done it, but Dell could do even better! 1 Comment »
