Notebook+UBUNTU+SSD+Open=Killer
Monitors and Displays, New Product Ideas, Operating Systems submitted by officeglen

Ideastorm has, in various ideas, come up with the killer product:
- Notebook - SSD - No CD/DVD drive - Wide range wireless networking - UBUNTU - Firefox - Open Office - Free videos pre-installed on the computer explaining how to do common tasks (browse, email, word processing) on the laptop - $350 (don’t bother if price will be over $400) - Sell at Walmart - Cool brand name (Apple has the iphone, not the Apple Dimension 8923a)
Now Lenovo will try for this too, so got to hit this for the 07 holiday market
For business, an LCD that has, in the base of the unit:: - SSD - No CD/DVD drive - Wide range wireless networking - UBUNTU - Firefox - Open Office - Lease these LCD++s at $20 a month for a two year lease, option to buy at any point - Show businesses how the low power requirements save them $$$ on energy bills - compare to PC+non-LCD monitor

Better Notebook sound and features

I was looking for a high end notebook for video editing. Every Dell model I looked at was missing something essential.
Most serious is the lousy sound. I can understand for low end notebooks, but high end need A REAL SOUND CARD. I would have been willing to buy a sound card, but that required a PCMCIA slot and you had elimintated those. I gave up.

GNU/Linux + AMD64 + NVIDIA/ATI Graphic

I've seen ideas about "GNU/Linux + AMD" and "GNU/Linux gaming system", but I think this combination would be great:
GNU/Linux + AMD64 + NVIDIA/ATI Graphic
especially on DELL laptops. For example imagine this notebook:
OS: Ubuntu 7.04 GNU/Linux CPU: AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 Graphic: NVIDIA GeForce 8800M RAM: 2 x 2GB
or this one as a cheaper choice:
OS: Ubuntu 7.04 GNU/Linux CPU: AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-52 Graphic: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 RAM: 2 x 1GB

minimalistic ultraportable.
Broadband and Mobility submitted by ogechter

Hello,
We are a lot of people looking for a cheap and minimalistic ultraportable. The objective is to be able to WORK (and not play or watching video) with a very small, reliable machine, everywhere (in a subway or in a plant as an example).
This kind of machine could be usefull in the industrie, for writers, for assistant, in east europ countries, in china and india. It could be usefull for old people afraid by the power of the new machines, and for old people who prefer using wordprocessing machines. And it could be a "ecologic friendly" machine (few material, low power needs).
To make a long description short : this machine is more or less a mix between a PDA (but focus on work applications) included in a keyboard, connectable on an external screen. In the past, the Psion minicomputer was perfect for that, unfortunatly, this machine is not sold anymore and nothing can replace it at the moment.
The minimum machine could have : - around 5 to 8 inches "panoramic" color touch screen. - Ultraportable keyboard (someone taking the keyboard in the hands could be able to reach all the keys just with the thumbs). - No hard disk, but memory stick. - USB2 plug. - memory cards drives (multi format, as in the Compaq Nc6320) - Wifi connectable.
The screen could be included in the keyboard without articulation. The angle between the keyboard and a table could be adjust with feet. It could be possible to connect an external screen on the keyboard.
No internal CD or DVD drive. No PCMCIA slot. Minimum sound capabilities. The machine would use basic microchip. The objective is to be cheap and avoid heat (and allow a very good autonomy). The design has to be attractive.
The machine could use Epoc OS, Palm OS or other portable OS. Ideally, the software have to be freeware or opensource. The minimum software package will be : - A basic but complet word processor (like the Windows wordpad), compatible with rtf. - a spreadsheet (like Excel 5), compatible xls. - a schedule manager - a portable internet browser, with Java - a pdf printer/viewer, - an archive manager (like 7zip). - an email software - a contacts manager.
From the basic user point of view I think it could be enough. The softwares and OS have to be very stable, fast and easy to use.
I hope that you will like this idea (which is not "my" idea. I discussed this with a lot of people who are looking for the same product as me). regards O.Gechter

Bring Back XP

I commonly have to setup new users pc's with now windows Vista.
Not because they wanted it, because they are forced into vista. I hate having to explain to people over and over why their old software doesn't work on this new operating system, Why their old hardware is not supported, and sadly enough, Why it is so much slower even though they have a new pc...
This OS is a joke, We need the option of XP again.. I have had to wipe multiple machines and load them with xp. This is an additional expense to the end user, Seems to me that Dell could sell a new pc preloaded with XP for a little more and people would probably buy it.
Im not sure what Microsoft was thinking on this one, I constantly have people telling me about all of the problems they have with vista, Some go as far as buying mac's..
Maybe they could start a new ad campaign. Don't Buy a Mac Just Yet!! Get a Dell with XP, We won't force you into this new OS. You have a right to choose. Thats what our Constitution is all about...

Environmental Laptop Based on Solar Energy/Hydrogen Fuel Cell
Environment, Laptop Power submitted by gchakra
02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
What's smart for the environment is smart for Dell. Dell should build units that are degradable or can be easily recycled. Sure, its going to be a little more expensive, but it will be a smart product. It will use a lot less energy. The laptops could have a solar panel or be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The first microelectronic implementation of a fuel cell will give Dell a tremendous marketing boost. It will be incredibly popular with kids in college. Gopal

Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS.

6 major issues to be fixed by Dell
Dell, Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by jervis961

Dell became a top company by providing choice and customer service to a customer that wasn't available at the time but has since fallen behind the pack in these areas. Needing a translator when calling customer support is unnacceptable and other companies are rapidly passing Dell in technology advancements. While this site is a good start, many things need to be changed for Dell to become the market leader again.
1. Customer support needs to be in well spoken English and with employees who are allowed to do more than just read from a script. If they are speaking with a computer savvy customer the rep should be allowed to deviate from the script as long as they don't go outside the relm of normal policy.
2. Better options: Other companies offer high end components in small computers but Dell only supplies intel video processors in its 14" laptop. Dell needs to allow customers to get the size computer they need but with options from low cost through the high end so they can get a computer that is "Purely you".
3. Less forced options: I hate that I am paying for and XPS with internet security when I don't need it because I already have a subsciption that will transfer over or AOL is installed when I know I don't need it. They need to add an option of none of the above to all the added software sections.
4. Better pricing: Why is it over $200 to upgrade from 1 GB of 533 MHZ ram to 2 GB of 677 MHZ RAM? I can go to Crucial.com and get the 2GB 677MHZ kit for under $200. Upgrading with Dell after you own is even worse at over $300 this is crazy.
5. Custom Dell website: Customers want to feel special why not make a MYDELL website that when you log in you get a site designed the way you want it. If you aren't interested in the small business site it gets removed, you don't like to go thru the accessories sections when customizing a system so you don't see that section. Click on customer support and a list of your computer pops up asking which one you need help with and only shows the options for that system.
6. Customer loyalty rewards: I have bought 6 Dell systems over the last few years, why can't I get better customer service or pricing due to my loyalty to the company?

Make All Parts Optional: Part Two
Sales Strategies, Service and Support submitted by big5sports

Some of you might have read the recent post "Make all parts optional" which is an idea of buying exactly what you want in a system (or not want).
I personally would love this idea to become reality at Dell. You might spin the idea a little differently though. It sounds like you want Dell to become a "white-box" vendor. In a way that is how Michael Dell started the company.
Long Story Short -
Dell make available the individual components of a system from the XPS and Inspirion lines. Allow us frequent upgraders to say I want the chassis and motherboard and new processor, but you can keep the rest. Give us a warranty on the parts you sell us - not just the 90 days you give on spare parts or other electronics.
There are customers out here that still beleve in the Dell brand - or we wouldn't be posting here - but we don't need to buy a new system every time we want something new. The "old school" computer shops are becoming smaller in number making components more expensive. Dell has the buying power to make these components truely affordable (and reasonablly priced) for the geeks and common user who just can't afford to buy a new system every six months.
A line of computers at Dell that are truly "Made to Order" is the Dell Direct Way!

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
Software submitted by robinjfisher
02/19/07 **REVIEWED**
Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF. Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.
