Rename IdeaStorm To SuggestionBox

IdeaStorm submitted by aikiwolfie Feb 16

When I signed up to IdeaStorm I thought the whole point was for people to get together and come up with awesome ideas for Dell to implement. We could all vote up or down the idea and Dell would take on the most popular ideas.

It would seem however that I was wrong as the current moderators continually discourage conversation amongst IdeaStorm members. It seems like a very strange thing to do. To restrict creativity in an environment designed and intended to encourage creativity.

Granted some of the conversation does go off on a tangent. But that is part and parcel of creative discussion. Sooner or later someone, a member of the group and not a mod, will bring us back on track. That is how life works on an open forum on the internet. A lesson Dell clearly has not learned yet.

While some conversations don't seem to have anything to do with IdeaStorm at first glance they do serve to inspire IdeaStorm members. Personally I have found the suggestion to use Dell Forums for such conversation wanting for some stimulation. I prefer to discuss ideas in the ideas own thread. Not only is this a more familiar environment but it is also more appropriate as the idea it's self will attract participants who are interested in "participating".

So here is my suggestion. As Dell are clearly only interested in headline ideas created by individuals, rename IdeaStorm to SuggestionBox. Because that's all you'll ever have when ideas are created purely by individuals alone. 11 Comments »

Latitude XT with Linux? Latitude XTn?

Latitude products, Linux submitted by aikiwolfie Feb 16

Are Dell planning to release a version of the Latitude XT with Ubuntu or some other flavor of Linux?

This is both an idea and a question. I would really like to see a version of the Latitude XT with Ubuntu. Looking at the video that has been posted on D2D and is now currently doing the rounds on the Linux Community site, it would seem Dell are teasing us a bit.

So how about it Dell? Are you big enough to bring the Latitude XT to Ubuntu? 6 Comments »

XPS One with Ubuntu

Linux, XPS products submitted by aikiwolfie Feb 16

I think this idea is really obvious and something Dell should have thought of before. All in one form factor systems aren't really intended to be upgradeable. This isn't a problem for newer versions of Linux as they will run very well on lower end hardware. This means the XPS One will age more gracefully and stay relevant to the home consumer market longer.

Yes there are issues with the ATI graphics drivers for Linux. But we could always just stick an Nvidia graphics option in there for Linux models, The XPS One-n. 39 Comments »

Bluetooth Headset and Microphones

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by epic4life Feb 16

I don't know about all of you, but I am constantly changing from my speakers to my headset. I have all of my cable nicely stored in the back of my computer, but I have to keep the headset/mic in the front input holes on the dell XPS 420.

It would be great if Dell invented a bluetooth headset and Microphone that was integrated into the hardware of the computer, either mobo or soundcard. This would eliminate my cord in the front, allow me to easily store and access my headsets and allow me the freedom of walk around my apartment without taking off my headset everytime I needed to use the restroom.

Just a thought

Guarantee for Ubuntu Laptops WAY more EXPENSIVE than windows

Linux, Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by madjr Feb 16

since Ubuntu has been offered i have purchased 2 Dell Laptops (sadly with Vista included... and yes, formated afterwards which was a pain with that dell media center stuff, windows based, screwed up partitions)

why i had to buy them with windows?

because the 3 year Guarantee for windows laptops is way cheaper on most models (or just wait a few weeks and you can get a huge bargain on the guarantee).

i´ve gotten a 3 year guarantee for just $99 on some of the windows offers.

while SADLY the 3 year guarantee for Ubuntu is $260 to $300.......

if it's the same GOD UMM hardware, why i can get a cheaper warranty on windows ones and not the ones with Ubuntu ??

i only purchase Ubuntu compatible models, but sadly can't get em with Ubuntu pre-installed.

My purchases counted as windows instead of Ubuntu ones, to me as an Ubuntu and Dell costumer thats worthless..

You have 2 choices:

A- lower the guarantee for all Ubuntu based PCs

B- Include an option on ALL (yes all compatible) INSPIRONS 1420 and XPS M1330 to let you choose bettween VISTA and UBUNTU, without extra charge or making the guarantee more expensive if you choose Ubuntu as pre-installed OS. 12 Comments »

Separate Hardware and Software Warranties

Service and Support submitted by lugo02 Feb 16

Dell, there are many people who would like a long hardware warranty without also having to pay for your software support warrantly.

You can continue offering the bundled warranty, but I believe many technical users would simple prefer paying for the hardware warranty only. Comment »

DELL shouldn't charge $150 more for their (PRODUCT)RED model and only donate $50 to Africa

Dell submitted by jaylus12 Feb 16

*** UPDATE: ***
I didn't look close enough. The (PRODUCT)RED model includes Windows Vista Ultimate. The other model comes with Home Premium, and costs $150 to upgrade to Ultimate. So DELL is not actually charging more for the (PRODUCT)RED, they are just forcing a Windows upgrade on you...

-------------------------------------------------------------...
While all other companies charge the SAME price for their (PRODUCT)RED model, and donate a percentage of the proceeds to fight diseases in Africa, DELL charges $150 more -- the specs are identical mind you, and only donates $50.

So where is the other $100 going?

Post StudioDell videos on IdeaStorm that relate to an idea

IdeaStorm submitted by jervis961 Feb 16

I was looking at Studio Dell and found this video which relates to one of the biggest complaints on IdeaStorm: BLOATWARE.
The video does a good job explaining what bloatware is and what Dell is doing to improve the situation. Why not post these videos as comments?

On a seperate note it was a pain to post this since StudioDell has no embed feature so I had to search YouTube for it. 1 Comment »

Using Desktop Processors on Laptops

Laptops submitted by wallyhorse Feb 17

One thing I have noticed recently is there are some smaller outfits that actually have laptops that use the Desktop Core2Duo (usually E6000 series) processors, especially on the larger laptops (like the 17" Inspiron and the 17" and 20.1" XPS). This is something that I wonder if Dell would be able to do also. If so, it would make for some of the fastest laptops in the business. 9 Comments »

For the proposed Dell/ANDROID smart phone. Mobile Mapping application for a public traffic watch forum. Users post travel watch voice clips as situations occur via wiki-style functionality. Warning icons are automatically mapped for others to see at the poster's GPS location. The service is supported via advertising services. Give XPS Notebooks Gigabit Ethernet

XPS products submitted by croftki Feb 17

I understand that Dell market research says home users in general are not interested in gigabit ethernet for home networks. Those who pay for the premium design in the XPS line, however, are more likely to want gigabit ethernet. I would rather buy something more exciting than a business class notebook, but I want to build on my home technology with each purchase I make. XPS Notebooks unfortunately do not help me do this. It seems my only option is to buy a Latitude. 28 Comments »

ATI-Powered Ubuntu Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Laptops submitted by zero79 Feb 17

Recently, ATI has been doing a lot to support the development of fully open 3D drivers for their cards [1].

It would be great if Dell were to support their efforts by offering ATI video cards on their ubuntu laptops.

High-Res XPS 1330

XPS products submitted by zero79 Feb 17

The 1280x800 resolution on the XPS 1330 is a bit low. It would be great if this laptop came in a 1400x900 flavor, or even better in 1650x1050. 15 Comments »

Konqueror-Compatible Dell Configurator

Dell Web Site submitted by zero79 Feb 17

Many Linux users use the Konqueror web browser, which is an alternative to Firefox. However, Dell's computer configurator site does not work very well with konqueror. The pictures of the computer are not shown, and it is not possible to progress through the steps to configure the computer. Please make the configurator compatible with Konqueror. 3 Comments »

IdeaStorm: Remove the Team Picture area on IdeaStorm

IdeaStorm submitted by jorge Feb 18

Some of the new add-ons, especially the "The Team" pictures has no business on IdeaStorm, a Business WebSite who's goal is to improve Dell not to "caricature" it.

In addition, this is offensive, the caricature of the Dell employees is offensive and demeaning, I mean does Dell do this to put them at a lower level than a regular employee? Does Dell feel they can't put the real picture up for any particular reason? I'm sure the feminism organization would throw a hissy fit if they saw this. Well I just forwarded it to them. The whole business aspect alone is really wrong, as far as taking them seriously, or am I the only one laughing at them? (the caricature's, not the persons, I know you were thinking the wrong thing, typical Dell assumptions)

Besides, those links only go on to waste precious time, I mean don't we want the ideas processed and implemented? Or does Dell want to spend time converting all its employee's pictures to caricatures? I'm sure if any IdeaStormer posted a caricature of a Dell employee they'd be banned or sent a nasty e-mail. Or are we also free to post caricature's of Dell employee's?

Edited per .chris's request or comment, see comments do add to the idea Dell, get with the program! 11 Comments »

Allow LCD screen of a Laptop to be turned OFF - provide a power button

Laptops submitted by greatidea Feb 18

Allow LCD screen of a Laptop to be turned OFF - provide a power button.

I observed that we can save a lot of battery power by turning off the screen. But when would we like to do that ? Yes, when we want to just listen to something while not watching or working on our PC, for ex. listen to songs (use it like a music player) or just when we want to do some long s/w installation,/maintenance but still save batteries. In such cases we can turn could be able to turn off the screen to save power.

Encourage Dell to make this change guys ! 15 Comments »
