Stop Overcharging on Notebook RAM
Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by realskript
08/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Dell really... REALLY need to stop overcharging... and when i say overcharing... i mean atleast double what you would pay to pick up the ram yourself. On XPS Notebooks... you are charging $500 for 4GB of ram... when you could easily go pick them up at your local computer shop for $250... and pocket the other half of the $500...
It would be nice if dell could save the customers as well as the company itself this hassle.. and start charging NORMAL prices for an upgrade in RAM.
thanks =D
PS..... PROMOTE THIS!!!!

There should be an option of having no trialware on all computers
Software submitted by jervis961
08/23/07 **REVIEWED**
Here is a news article about trialware and how Dell feels that regular customers want it but small business ones do. Do they not look at the ideas here?
"Not interested in all of the trial software that clutters up new PCs? You're not alone: According to Dell's recent research in both focus groups and broader surveys, small-business users overwhelmingly view trialware as an irritant, not a benefit. That research has led Dell to axe the extras from its new Vostro line of small-business desktop PCs and laptops. Eliminating demo applications is a major step for Dell, which has caught flack for the quantity of trialware on its consumer PCs. (One frustrated customer went so far as to develop a "Decrapifier" utility. The company says that consumers who buy PCs for personal use do express interest in preloaded trial software, but that small-business users have different needs. By eliminating the trialware from Vostro machines, Dell says it has cut the system setup time in half. For now, Dell is the only major PC manufacturer to ship small-business systems without preinstalled trialware as a standard practice. (Some competitors, such as HP, allow customers to choose a no-trialware configuration.)"
Dell offers a broad amount of software choice and minimal software shipped. Read jeremy_f's post on the options we give our customers

Put Ubuntu on the list of operating systems when building a PC!
Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by samb0057
08/10/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Ubuntu is hidden in a dark corner of the website. I work in IT support, and I have a client who was having virus problems a little while ago. I fixed the problem by installing Ubuntu on their PC. Very recently they called me asking for advice on a new computer, I told them about your new offer providing Ubuntu pre-installed on PCs and they wanted to purchase, but could not find the section on your site (this person is a very basic user, doesn't know what open-source means, probably didn't even see the open source link). There is no way they would have found your Ubuntu section on their own.
I urge you to offer Ubuntu as a choice of OSes in the system configuration wizard, the only way to really sell Ubuntu is to offer Ubuntu as a primary option, rather than a hidden alternative. I personally am looking to buy a new laptop, and you guys have always been my number 1 PC manufacturer (I don't think I've ever bought a new retail PC except from you guys), but I feel that your Ubuntu offerings are lacking. If you offered Ubuntu on some of the great deals you offer on your home page, I would be willing to pay just as much as I would for a Windows Vista system and I probably would have already ordered.

Standardize Power Cables for Laptops
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by badblood
08/27/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Nothing is more annoying than laptop power cables that are not interchangeable from one computer model to another or from one brand of computer to another. Power cables have been standardized on most electrical applicances, including desktop computers for decades.
Make an effort to promote and implement standard power cables for laptops.

Graphics Tablet PC
Desktops and Laptops submitted by ozzimundi
03/01/07
An extremely obvious market for Tablet PCs are designers and artists! I am pining for a Tablet PC with a decent graphics card and greater pen pressure sensitivity and accuracy than what is currently available on the market. To be able to draw directly on the image and fully utilize the effects of software like Corel Painter... (or even to be able to play games on a Tablet like an extra-large Nintendo DS would be pretty neat.)
I don't understand why no one seems to be appealing to this market - is the technology not small enough to work within the confines of a decently sized laptop? That's my theory as to why Apple hasn't done this already...

Take advantage of the linux kernel developers offer to develop fully supported linux PC's
Dell, Linux submitted by iphtashufitz
02/24/07
On January 29th the linux kernel developers posted an offer on the Kerneltrap website (http://kerneltrap.org/node/7636) offering free linux driver development to any company who asks. To quote from their announcement:
"You will receive a complete and working Linux driver that is added to the main Linux kernel source tree. The driver will be written by some of the members of the Linux kernel developer community (over 1500 strong and growing). This driver will then be automatically included in all Linux distributions, including the 'enterprise ones. It will be automatically kept up to date and working through all Linux kernel API changes. This driver will work with all of the different CPU types supported by Linux (for the CPUs that support the bus types that your device works on), the largest number of CPU types supported by any operating system ever before in the history of computing."
Dell should embrace this offer to its fullest extent. They should work with the linux kernel developers to build fully supported linux PC's (servers, desktops, and notebooks/laptops). Any hardware vendor that doesn't take advantage of this offer is foolish. With the direct assistance of the kernel developers, Dell could offer a wide range of fully supported linux systems that would work with virtually any linux distro.

Include Multiple Dell-Customized Linux install disks
Linux, Operating Systems submitted by artemisgoldfish
05/24/07
Instead of only including one OS on a Dell Linux machine (Ubuntu), include many different Linux install disks which cover the gamut of popular distributions, such as SuSe/OpenSuSe, Fedora, Ubuntu (Of course), Slackware, or other such OS's.
Alternatively, or in addition to that, a Linux Installation temporary OS could be installed on the hard drive of a new computer, which would include a few of the more popular Linux distributions on the hard drive itself and allow a user to select the one they wish to install, which would then delete the other Operating Systems from the drive.

Linux-Compatible Components
Linux submitted by jtoegel
02/22/07
I think Dell should choose Linux-Compatible components for its PCs, i.e. no components from manufacturers which are supported by the linux kernel, a GPL Driver or at least a binary driver provided for major linux distributions. That would also force manufacteres to publish the specifications of their Products, which would make Life much easier for both Linux and Windows users as well as for PC manufacturers like Dell.

Replacment Hard Drives Preloaded with OS.
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Operating Systems submitted by abrezinsky
05/15/07
I've replaced many dell drives in the past few years, and you always ship the drive replacement in the drive holder to slide right back into the system. However you always ship the drive with the originally installation media and a blank drive.
Given how many people I've seen try to install Windows themselves, send a replacement drive that has Windows installed with the drivers all setup, restoring the machine to the factory shipped image. Then the user just has to copy their backed up files over instead of requiring the user to install the OS and get the driver configuration right.

Chase me down for upgrade
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming submitted by jstanell
04/20/07
I own 2 Dell XPS machines a 600 and a 700.
I wish I didn't have to know anything about potential upgrades to these machines. Dell should proactively tell me of available hardware or software upgrades and thier expected benefits/price. Espesially on the XPS machines where most people bought for performance..if I could add to performance somehow, I would..but I don't know what my options are

Offer anti-static wrist straps as a product
Service and Support submitted by kirkktx
05/16/07
I upgraded the disk in my Dell laptop to a larger one. Instructions suggest using an anti-static wrist strap. Why doesn't Dell sell these ?
Given the difficulty in troubleshooting problems caused by static, you might be able to make the case that giving a free strap away with a disk drive would make business sense.
Whenever I buy an item where a strap is suggested for installation, it should be offered as an optional add-on item.
Thanks,
Kirk

Make clear what Windows Vista costs
Operating Systems submitted by rvw
02/21/07
We all know the retail prices of Windows Vista for the different versions, OEM, etc. I would like to see the price difference if I don't want a Vista license. This should be a discount of course, not something you have to pay for (what has happened in the past). This should be the normal OEM price, but probably Dell has a special discount from Microsoft, so the true costs for Dell could be less. I wouldn't mind if Dell used the OEM price.
This way it becomes clear and transparant what the true costs are for using Windows. Of course it would mean that the customer can choose not to buy a Windows license. This should be offered for any notebook or desktop.

BIOS Recovery
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by majestic
03/23/07
I wish Dell would take a step back in time and reintroduce a BIOS recovery scheme on their motherboards.
As an active participant in the Dell Community Forums, I've seen a lot of postings in those forum related to BIOS upgrade problems. Lately, there has been quite a few complaints related to the newer BIOS version not supporting the OEM processor that came with the system as well as BIOS upgrades that fail to properly install thus rendering the system unusable. Lately the Dimension E521 is a frequent topic. In some of these cases, Dell Tech Support honored the warranty replacement of the motherboard while others were left with the out of pocket expense of paying for the repairs themselves on fairly new systems.
All this could be avoided if Dell would revert back to a BIOS recovery scheme. Not only would it give the consumer a little confidence in knowing there is a remedy for a bad BIOS flash, but it would save both the consumer and Dell the expense of replacing the motherboard. If nothing else, at least socket the BIOS chip so that it can be swapped out in the event of a bad BIOS flash. Presently, I would be reluctant to advise anyone with a new Dell system to flash the BIOS unless Dell Tech Support was walking them through the procedure over the phone.

No More Dumbed Down WordPerfect, incessent ads on machine
Software submitted by dralphesq
02/17/07
We bought five Dells for our office. This has been a WordPerfect shop since 1985. I have nearly 10,000 documents on my hard drive. WP Ver 8 was getting indigestion XP Pro, so we looked forward to getting WP Ver 12. Wait, the new WP 12 had the search feature deleted. Try to find the document you did for a client two or three years ago. Try to find a different document so as not to have to re-discover the wheel.
So, Mike, I just paid off my credit card for ordering WordPerfect standard edition from Amazon. Now I can use WP again. What a pain in the whatever body part you care to choose. Also, the never ending requests to buy software, generated on my own HD months later? Thanks, but we want to do business without being pissed off by our own computers that we paid good money for.
Get rid of the dumbed down software, and get rid of the advertizements on the HD.
Why would I ever want to buy from you again? To suffer repeating irritations and roadblocks to using MY computer?
Think about it.
Thanks. Good luck.

Performance Tablet/Thin and Light
Gaming, Laptops submitted by chungng

What I'd like to be able to buy from Dell:
13.3 ~5 lb Performance Tablet PC with great discrete graphics options (x1700 or GeForce 7700) possibly even upgradable. Possibly a dual graphics chip option similar to the Sony SZ line to help with battery life. A nice high res wide viewing angle screen WXGA+ or better option for working with multiple text files 9 Cell (or larger) battery options to get 5+ hours of life Built in optical drive with swappable drive bay battery options Latest WiFI (802.11n) and bluetooth Great keyboard with trackpoint nub and touchpad. Non-plastic case options. Carbon fiber, magnesium alloy... whatever... just something without the cheapy plastic feel. Backlit keyboard All the little extras - SD card reader - finger print scanner - extra usb ports - firewire - PCMCIA (for corporate smart card readers) and ExpressCard
External docking station Possibly a camera options Possibly a non-tablet version as well
