Offer Linux Friendly Peripherals

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by wh0rd 05/08/07

With Dell offering Linux on the Desktop, it would be just awesome if there were peripherals thrown in with Linux compatibility. Purchasing a new Linux computer you might also need things like Printers, Webcams, Scanners, Wireless Mice/Keyboards, etc. This wouldn't be limited to new purchases either. I think the rest of the existing Linux users will find comfort in purchasing peripherals from Dell also. This is because there are numerous threads on Linux support forums just on silly peripherals that don't comply with Linux out of the box. 3 Comments »

End the Novell/Microsoft Deal

Dell, Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by plasticboy 05/07/07

Dell should end its deal with Novell and Microsoft to distribute SUSE Linux and provide patent protection to end-users:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2007/may07/05-06MSDellNovellPR.mspx

This deal violates the spirit of the open source license under which Linux is distributed and is a slap in the face for every free software contributor.

Entering into this deal will put Dell in a tight place when open source projects that are key to Linux, such as the Samba project, begin to use the next version of the GNU General Public License which will specifically prohibit such deals:
http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS7188736246.html

If Dell is serious about Linux, then it must be serious about the freedoms that Linux affords to its users. The Novell deal endangers these freedoms by acknowledging the intellectual property claims that Microsoft has made over Linux:

Dell Could Become the OpenGL Hero to the Open Source Community

Linux submitted by hmwamboldt 05/01/07

For a very long time, OpenGL support in the Open Source community has been spotty at best.

If Dell would take on the role of comprehensive testing, and repackaging (for updates) Nvidia or ATI drivers for several supported hardward (and software) configurations, that would make Dell a hero, at least to me. I've spent an inordinate amount of time installing, updating, patching, downgrading, and repairing damage done to systems by installing OpenGL drivers and OpenGL related system crashes over the last few years. It should be noted, (in defence of ATI and Nvidia) that many, if not most, of these problems stem from interactions with various chipsets, bridges, and bugs in various Xorg components. Hence my emphasis on testing.

Furthermore, if Dell could encourage Nvidia and ATI to release the specs for their oldest propriatary hardware (it's gotta be at least 4 or 5 years old now), that would probably provide a global benefit. But, if nothing else, comprehensive testing of new drivers and providing "Dell certified" update packages for Linux, would probably make Dell a prefered vendor for many, many midtier OpenGL users like myself.

Ubuntu system should be sold in Canada

Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by trosendal 05/07/07

Dell should consider a Northamerican wide launch of the Ubuntu PC not just in the US. This will create more hype and therefore sales. We want a Dell preloaded with Ubuntu in Canada. 12 Comments »

Gaming, Linux submitted by homerhomer 05/07/07

Dell is an huge step for Linux and they have a huge voice for the computer community . I would love to see Dell talking to gaming companies on bringing there products to Linux.

One way I could see this would be to bundle a game like Quake 4. 11 Comments »

Support Drivers for older Dell models on Ubuntu

Inspiron products, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by bradyq 05/06/07

I bought my e1505 under a year ago. I installed ubuntu myself shortly thereafter. I have an ati graphics card and a draft-n wireless. I love linux and ubuntu, but to install linux I have to use some hacks to get everything working. If dell is going to be offering ubuntu now there should be downloadable drivers for those who purchased their computers within the last two years. In my case I b elieve that everything on my laptop is still offered on the e1505. Just an idea. 2 Comments »

Make a DEBIAN repository for DELL's drivers

Linux submitted by dutchfish 05/04/07

Ever had to install a linux desktop or server? Does the endless search for drivers and documentation how to install them ring a bell? Your problems could be over and make DELL your first choice of buying a linux desktop or server if there was a DEBIAN repository for DELL's hardware. 5 Comments »

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Extend offers like Linux pre-installation to the UK & Europe

Dell, Linux submitted by leftcase 05/03/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

First of all - well done Dell for listening to the people and making some brave decisions about the operating systems you provide your computers with.

Supplying pre-installed Linux (and XP instead of Vista for that matter) goes a good way towards giving customers what they want.

One thing that is slightly irritating however is that none of these offers are available outside of the US. Browsing through peoples comments, blogs and the Dell forums reveals that many people from the UK (for example), want the opportunity to get pre-installed Linux on their new Dell PCs.

The UK and Europe marketplace is not insignificant, and many people feel that you should extend your offer to this market too.

Please see Ideas In Action for additional information. Ubuntu Linux in other countries is coming soon.

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

All Dell products should be available globally

Dell submitted by hjwasson 04/25/07 **NOT LIKELY**

Consumers should not be restricted on what is available to them based on geographic location!

I've learned that Dell does not offer all models of computers outside of the United States. That seems strange, since Dell is a direct vendor, using web sites and toll-free phone numbers to make sales - and the products for the most part aren't even made in the US! Dell should offer all their products to everyone, regardless of where they live. If Dell wants to charge a little more for the shipping, I'm sure the users would be willing to accept that to have more choice. 12 Comments »
