Dell can help the market standardize on Blue Ray faster

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by ranjith 02/14/07

Dell has already declared support for Blue Ray but is not a visible part of its offerings yet. Dell can push the vendors to drive the prices down and help this technology adoption at a faster rate. 1 Comment »

Welcome to India

Dell submitted by nimitsoni 04/26/07

Come into a huge emerging market for computer market like India is realy a great opportunity for a giant like Dell. But one thing which the company should keep in mind is about the rural market of India and the supply chain need to be established in this market segment. The company can hire local trader in the field. These local traders are generaly dealing in computer assembly. In this rural market the awairness of Branded computers is still low. People preffer in assembled computers. If the company want to cater these customer than need to make more promotion and creat awairness about branded product of this catagory. 2 Comments »

Sell cheaper Used Windows licenses like the ones the Govt of Munich buys.

Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 04/26/07

Munich buys Windows 2000 used licenses
2 Jan 2007

The German city of Munich is buying a whole pile of Microsoft Windows this month - but it won't be the newly released Windows Vista. Instead, it will buy 2000 legit "used licenses" of Windows 2000 Professional, claiming it will save them money.

Second hand licenses are growing in popularity. In the UK, sales of second-hand Microsoft software licences are, apparently, doubling month-on-month.

That's not surprising: for instance, 218 licenses of Windows Office XP will cost €70,000 (£47,000) in Germany, but when used, the price drops to €32,000.
Yes, that was 2007; and yes that was Windows 2000. Windows 2000 if perfectly adequate for many user's needs; and at less than half price it's pretty appealing.

This will also be useful after Microsoft stops letting Dell ship new copies of XP. Selling used copies of XP could let Dell continue to fill the demand after Microsoft stops OEMs from selling new ones later this year. 8 Comments »

Provide a way to associate similar ideas/posts

IdeaStorm submitted by hjwasson 04/26/07

There should be a way to associate many similar posts together. If you page through IdeaStorm, you will find clouds of posts regarding "Please don't kill the Axim," "Fix the search feature," etc.

1. IdeaStorm members should be able to click on "This post seems similar to another post."

2. They can then paste the URL of the similar post(s) and click Okay.

3. There should be an "I agree/disagree" voting function for each URL, similar to the current promote/demote. This would appear on all of the potentially similar posts.

4. Once the agree value reaches a set threshold (say 100 points), the posts become associated.

5. Associated posts get a sub-heading stating "This post is associated with x, y, z" and there should be an aggregate value of all the points earned by the associated posts.**

**This is the heart of the matter - if there was an easy way for Dell (& all of us) to see just how popular a general topic of discussion was, I think you'd be able to spot huge trends that might otherwise get buried because no one individual post got enough posts to rise to the top of the discussion lists. 10 Comments »

IdeaStorm should check to see if your post is similar to existing posts

IdeaStorm submitted by hjwasson 04/26/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

One of the greatest failings with IdeaStorm's otherwise wonderful concept is that many similar posts are created - and although they all get votes, no one post gets enough votes to rise to Dell's attention.

When you submit a post, I would like to see IdeaStorm search for similar posts, and if it finds any, prompt you:

Your post seems similar to this/these post(s):

1. Yes, it is. Please make my post a comment to the existing post instead (& I will vote on that post).

2. No, they are different - but related. Please associate my post to the existing post.

3. No, my post is not related - continue posting.

#2 is related to my suggestion to be able to be able to associate similar posts:

http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/66450/Provide_a_way_to_associate_simila...

For all of this to work, Dell would have to vastly improve it's search ability within IdeaStorm (perhaps collaborate with Google?)! Use Google's advanced search features, with www.ideastorm.com as the domain to search, if you want to see for yourself the differences in how well the search features function.

Duplicate ideas suggestion feature has been added.

Add Expiration Dates to Software & Equipment Quotes

Service and Support submitted by jbhagan 04/26/07

When I get a quote from my Dell rep it takes time before I can act on it. I have to put together a customer proposal and wait for a response. I never know if my quote is going to be good by the time I am ready to purchase because there is no displayed expiration date. Some quotes have been good for at least a month while the last one I received expires after 3 days (glad I asked!). If I get customer approval on a quote that proves to be expired, I get stuck with the change in price (sometimes good, sometimes bad).

Saved shopping carts are even worse, but that's another issue. 2 Comments »

Makes the prices consistent

Sales Strategies submitted by painterhenry 04/26/07

1) sometimes when I use the system configurator to upgrade the spec of a certain lower end system, the resulting price would be less than the cost of a higher end Dell preconfigured system of exactly the same spec! Similarly, sometimes when I use the system configurator to downgrade the spec of a higher end system, the resulting price would be less than the cost of a Dell preconfigured lower end system of the same spec! Please eliminate this kind of inconsistency.

2) Another price inconsistency happens when you do upgrades with the system configurator. For example, for a given Dell preconfigured system, if one wants to upgrade the basic 20" mon to a 27" one, the price of the monitor (figured as the price when you buy it stand-alone from Dell ) plus the upgrade cost *exceeds* that of the price of a 27" if you buy it as stand-alone! This again is silly as it discourages upgrading as if to punish someone who wants to upgrades.

So, what one usually does is to take the basic 20" mon and then order another 27" and then sell the 20" away. I think this is not what Dell wants to see.

3) Final price inconsistency is a Dell component sometimes costs more than the retail price of the same component. For example, one can buy a 8800GTX card (eg Asus) cheaper than the *upgrade* cost (upgrading from a 7900GS to 8800GTX via system configurator)!
So, what one usually does is to get the basic 7900GS and then go out and buy an Asus 8800GTX and then open the case and switch them. This is something Dell does not want to see too. 5 Comments »

Linux or OSless on every system

Linux, Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by tacone 04/27/07

Now that you've decided to offer Linux please don't restrict to a little number of systems.
Try to offer it on every desktop/notebook. If not possible, offer a OS-less option instead.

Windows OEM keeps (or maybe discourage a little) some of us from buying. Comment »

Free DOS as an OS choice while configuring laptops online - INDIA

Operating Systems, Laptops submitted by jlanetuser 04/27/07

The configurability of DELL laptops online is restricted in that the OS choice almost always is limited to either Windows VISTA or XP. It will be better if Free DOS is provided as a choice. This will be extrmely useful for many end users who would rather buy the OS of their choice rather than being restricted to the bundled OS option. Also the end users might already have access to a purchased OS, in which case the bundled OS becomes an unnecessary cost factor. This option is already available in many HP Compaq laptops avaialble in the market.

Only after posting this I noticed that this option is indeed available for DELL laptops (for the Latitude range) in USA. However consumers in INDIA are not so lucky. Why this discrimination :-((( 2 Comments »

True PNP hardware driver support standard

Service and Support submitted by dino 04/27/07

Work with other vendors and Microsoft/other OS manufactures to create a true local Plug and Play hardware driver standard, where the driver for supported operating systems is stored on the hardware device physically. A small flash memory module installed on each hardware device that stores all supported operating system drivers. When the hardware device is detected the operating system will detect the driver from the flash memory on the hardware and if found the correct driver will install automatically. If not the user would be asked for the driver as normal. When the user downloads an updated driver from the internet an option to update the PNP firmware should be available. This would allows all drivers to be installed during operating system installation and when installing new hardware on a computer system. This would also reduce calls to tech support for driver related questions and create a stable operating environment since the user will always have the correct driver support. Comment »

make it possible to buy a machine with ONLY the OS and drivers installed with none of those garbage "trail softwares"

Operating Systems, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dontlunch 04/27/07

Please stop including so many peices of "trial software" in new machines. I didn't ask for any of that stuff, and I don't want any of that stuff.

When I buy a computer with vista or XP that is ALL I want. I don't want a thirty-day version of AOL, or a bunch of stupid cheap games or 30-days of macafee or 30 days of MS office or any of all that other garbage that is always installed. Its a real hassel to either figure out how to uninstall everything, or reinstall the OS from scratch. i shouldn't have to do that, I shouldn't be forced to get software I don't want.

You could have an option to purchase a machine with ONLY the OS and your hardware drivers installed and nothing else. (I'd be willing to pay an extra 5 or 10 bucks to be saved the hassel of trying to clean all that garbage software off of a brand new machine, and that would help offset the loss of the money all those companies pay you to install thier garbage on all your machines) 11 Comments »

Doc 30 day getting started contracts for free...

Advertising and Marketing submitted by supeg 04/27/07

I think that if we somehow had a program where instead of offering the 30 day getting started contracts for 50 dollars, if we offered them for free. By doing so, we will have a lot more people using it, therefore we are able to position upgrades to a ton of people who would get to use the service and find out how valuable it really is.

I think the main thing keeping people away from getting DOC is they do not know that we have tools like Dellconnect, and we can basicly do whatever a tech could do in person, software wise.

We could even make it into a incentive to buy a Dell Computer, by including 30 days free support. Comment »

Make the laptop keyboard easy to clean

Laptops submitted by dlipton 04/28/07

The keyboards in laptops are extremely difficult to clean. If crumbs fall under or between the keys it can be tough to fish them out. What if there was a way to pop open the keyboard to easily vacuum out under the keys or, even better, if you could just throw the think in a sink to wash it out. 2 Comments »

Offer XPS M1710 BluRay Kit

Gaming, XPS products submitted by muzicman82 04/28/07

I purchased an XPS M1710 notebook in early December 2006. Not two weeks later, Dell announces that the same model is available with a BluRay drive, and is nVidia PureVideo certified.

Granted, at the time of my purchase, this new hardware option was not in my budget... but what if I want to add it later? Do I spend another $3,200 on a new system of same model?

And so, my idea is simple. Offer upgrade packages that give recent or past purchases additional upgrades, preferably at a discounted price than just ordering the "spare parts".

For example, if I want this slim BluRay drive in my current system, you could offer that packaged with the current top of the line nVidia graphics card. Or perhaps bundle it with additional memory.

Many Dell customers including myself currently resort to online marketplaces such as eBay to find "after market" parts, or those we can't simply purchase from Dell directly.

While I am speaking for my own instance, upgrade kits for other systems and models would certainly be a huge benefit. 2 Comments »

Integrated Universal Remote For Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by transit60 04/28/07

Dell should partner with Logitech to develop an integrated universal remote control. Not a seperate, hand held remote, but a system that would be within the laptop, with control buttons in place of the media control buttons currently on Inspirons in the front. Software based controls could also be implimented. For those of us who use their laptops at home in the living room, we would never have to hunt for the remote again. 1 Comment »

Make all notebooks' warranty global

Service and Support, Laptops submitted by painterhenry 04/28/07

Notebooks are meant to travel around, not just within a country but also globally. I propose each and every single Dell notebook should carry international warranty.

This has little practical impact to business travelers who usually stay in another country for too short a time to utilize the international warranty for repair and service. But this means a lot for students (especially those in college) who are going to study overseas or for immigrants who are moving to another country. 4 Comments »

Better Notebook sound and features

Laptops submitted by foxx 02/17/07

I was looking for a high end notebook for video editing. Every Dell model I looked at was missing something essential.

Most serious is the lousy sound. I can understand for low end notebooks, but high end need A REAL SOUND CARD. I would have been willing to buy a sound card, but that required a PCMCIA slot and you had elimintated those. I gave up.
