HD Receiver in Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by sanjitkumar 07/04/07

Dell Laptop's display have excellent clarity/resolution, and with more travellers using laptops, I think an "HDTV" Off-Air Receiver built in as an OPTIONAL add-on along with an Optional TV Tuner card, can make laptops as instant "Portable HDTVs".

I have a "HD TV Off air Receiver" hooked upto my HD-TV and it works great.

Wondering if Dell can come up with a portable HDTV thru its laptop??? 10 Comments »

Make complete hardware docs freely available

Simplify IT submitted by amesbury 07/04/07

One of the historical problems with Dell hardware is that hardware documentation isn't freely available. While the Linux crowd has made significant inroads into addressing this problem by incorporating binary, vendor-supplied drivers into their OS, this approach doesn't work universally for all distributions or, more importantly, for operating systems not recognized by vendors. In particular, I have a strong business need for systems which can run smoothly under FreeBSD, as it fits its role better than Linux (for our purposes; not interested in a "my OS is better than yours" war). The Dell PowerEdge 750 and PE1850 were the last PowerEdge systems I know of which worked flawlessly. In particular, they had Intel NICs and Adaptec RAID hardware, both of which were heavily documented and supported in the Open Source community. The PE860 and PE2950, unfortunately, have Broadcom NICs (in my experience not nearly as well supported and openly documented) and LSI RAID (a.k.a., the PERC 5/i, also not as well supported and openly documented).

Dell: *PLEASE* use your weight to encourage your suppliers to release documentation on their hardware products into the community! This would benefit *ALL* open source operating systems, and make your hardware products that much more attractive to those of us who frequently buy bare-metal systems from you. 1 Comment »

Dell start a smokeless campaign on the Dell campus and related sites

Dell, Healthcare submitted by jorge 07/04/07

Dell start a campaign to get your smoker employees to stop smoking. For one do not allow anyone to smoke on the Dell campus or affiliated sites. Start a detoxification program as well, you need healthy employees who will file less health claims, which in the long run save you health insurance money!

Nice Skin You Got There!

Desktops, Inspiron products submitted by daniel117 07/04/07

I was thinking of a "skin" to put on your Inspiron desktop computer. You can put that beautiful picture of your son and daughter or even Mona Lisa on the side of your desktop computer to get a one nice, processing, and Windows Vista operating piece of art. By putting a skin on your computer, instead of that blank, white side on your computer, you can mail or e-mail your picture, submit your picture while building your Inspiron PC online at Dell's website, or choose from Dell's archive of photos (which will include Mona Lisa as well) when building your PC. The photo will be on the right side on the computer case.
I can't wait to put my favorite photo on an new Inspiron (if Dell would be interested about this and put this as an option, so please promote it!). 2 Comments »

Show the Vista performance rating during system configuration.

Dell Web Site submitted by jervis961 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

People may not realize that Vista gives your computer a performance rating based on several factors (processor, RAM, hard drive and video card).
Dell should show the performance rating on the side as you build your computer and update it as you go along changing the configuation. This should give people a guage as to if an upgrade will really improve your overall performance and also what kinds of games and programs your new computer will be capable of.

Basic value

Dell submitted by traveler 07/04/07

Stop focusing on wall street short term numbers and actually focus on delivering a higher quality product to the customer than the cheapest crap from the low bidder. Customers do in fact care about the average life they can expect to get out of a product. Basic 3 year parts and labor warranty included in the price. I bought a Sony about 6 years ago and it is still going strong. My Dell unit, well let's not go there right now. Low bidder = Low quality = Low customer retention. And the knee jerk reaction for Dell appears to lay off their workers and treat them like commodities.

Two-finger scroll

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by hephaestus 07/04/07

The Apple Macbooks have a two-finger scroll, which is fabulous. You don't have to grab the scrollbar of your web browser or arrow down. You just use two fingers on the touchpad and the page automatically scrolls. This seems like such a simple, but wonderfully convenient feature, it should be standard on all Dell notebooks. 8 Comments »

Dell quit producing special computer systems for Ubuntu, just install it, it works.

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jorge 07/04/07

Dell stop spending money producing systems solely for Ubuntu/No-OS, it works as it is on your current product line! Just install it! Try it! Do you need a tech lesson on how to do it? Don't mean to be mean but just Google it!

Your wasting your resources and money R&D-ing new special systems when it works already. Don't be afraid to erase the pre-installed Windows partition, you can recover it by backing it up if you're really worried about the license and at worse you can install one of the drives in the Refurbished bin to test it out, without voiding any warranties, which by the way you can call your tech support to verify or ask for help on to do (swapping out the hard drive).

I've also tested No-OS and it works great! 6 Comments »

User-programmable keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by cendrillon117 07/05/07 **NOT NOW**

When I was keying in a lot of numbers to Excel, I was able to keep my right hand over the number keypad and didn't need my left hand except when I wanted to tab to a new column. I thought it would be neat at the time to have another key over at the keypad for tabbing. After studying things, however, I see that is not practical.

What might be neat is to have an easily user-programmable keyboard that one can change the use of one key to something else, such as the * key could become tab if that user needs that function more. Perhaps while in Excel for a long time we could program a tab key as stated, then reset it back to its original when done. These could be RAM-type changes that default to original upon reboot, too.

When using an AS400 system, they have keyboard maps that can be altered by the user and that's what gave me this idea. 3 Comments »

Have your support staff listen to the customers' responses

Service and Support submitted by s43 07/05/07

I have had to contact dell support on over 5 different problems, all about hardware failure. But that's not what I'm complaining about. Before I call dell, I like to see if I can fix the problem first. Anyone who has ever used dell support knows that when you do contact them, they ask you what steps you have taken to try to fix the problem, so that you don't repeat them. Every time I tell them what I have done to try to remedy the situation, and I just end up repeating those steps. The outcome is that you spend 5 hours on the phone with dell and your computer still isn't working. If they actually listened, you could actually get something done in those 5 hours or less. Have your support staff listen to those responses, or don't have them ask what I've done to fix my computer already! 3 Comments »

Offer the Inspiron 1420 in Europe.

Inspiron products, Monitors and Displays submitted by crysalidzzz 07/04/07

The Inspiron 1420 with the 14 inch screen is not available in Europe. This is the notebook i wish to purchase. Fairly mobile and can be configured with an anti-glare screen.

The 1520/21 is available however. But a bit too big for my tastes. 4 Comments »

Make decent 3-d graphics widely available

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.) submitted by gkenaley 06/25/07

Right now most manufacturers will sell you a near-perfect PC for a reasonable price -except that they usually have weak, integrated 3d graphics and a power supply that will not support a powerful aftermarket graphics cards. What I would like Dell to do to differentiate itself is:

1. Make more sub-$1000 systems available with powerful graphics chips from Nvidia and/or ATI. They don't need to be high-end chips, just a lot faster than the integrated GPUs commonly on motherboards.

2. Clearly state the availability of PCI Express slots and reserve power supply capacity on all desktop systems, so that end users can easily add mid-range 3d cards if desired. You could even resell or recommend cards from EVGA, etc.

Dell can profitably follow this strategy to provide cost-efficient and power-efficient 3d graphics to the masses without cutting into its high-end XPS gamer sales.

Since Dell is putting Ubuntu on their notebooks and a desktop computer, I figured out that they can put it on their tablet pc's as well.

Please don't make us buy what we don't need - it'll only cause waste.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by rawlplug 06/25/07

Do I really need a keyboard for my third Dell - or a mouse? Offer a very basic system upon which the customer can build. That way there would be a reduction in the number of keyboards etc that are consigned to the scrap-heap! 3 Comments »

More physical switches on laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops and Laptops submitted by badblood 06/26/07

Please include on laptops and desktops additional physical switches to adjust or turn on and off:

-Volume
-Screen brightness; and turn on/off screen
-Webcam
-Microphone
-LAN
-External drives/media

Not electronic buttons that don't work when the HD the is booting or doing something else annoying- but physical switches that you can turn off anytime and that override the system.....

Thanks. 3 Comments »
