Biodegradable Packing material
Environment submitted by ewagnerjr2000

When I received my 32" lcd screen it had an extremely large amount of Styrofoam. Dell is working to be environmentally friendly, maybe they should consider a better packing material at least one that will biodegrade.

Thin and Light Laptops
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by yaletownkid

I used to be all about performance and display with my choice of laptop. But I went "thin and light" about 3 years ago, and I will never go back!
I know the majority of buyers prefer the 15" (or bigger) screens, and big wrist-wrest keypads, but have you ever tried to use one on a plane? Send the Product Manager on a few cross-country, economy class flights and they'll see what I mean. I have an office, home office, and i"m mobile daily. Honestly try carrying around 8lbs and 15" form factor - its like carrying dumbbells.
Please look into: 1. Form factors of 12" screens, Less than 3lbs 2. try magnetitic power connection 3. solid state memory possibilities 4. Dire need of a style/design update. My 640m has all the sex appeal of a dial tone. 5. I would pay a premium to NOT have all that bloatware pre-installed. 6. the optical drive - can we make this totally optional?
Thanks for letting me participate.

System Security - Fingerprint Scanners
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by guardianxps

I would like to see computers have some new technology added like Fingerprint scanners. Stolen computers are an issue and adding this will create a better level of security. The only downside I can see would be if one person sold the computer to another and didnt reset the scanner.
Still, I would like to see this and I am sure others would too.

A Dell Linux Timeline - The Countdown Begins <strike>today</strike> in 1992.
Dell, Linux, Small Business submitted by jmxz
04/20/07
For those newer to Linux, here's a timeline of Dell's involvement with Linux.
The Idea for IdeaStorm is that Dell should support Linux as well as it had in the past (before the Mar 2002 event)
I consider this document a work-in-progress and any additions are welcome. PLEASE Find more links and post them in the comments and I'll add them to the timeline.
- Feb 1992 · Linux runs fine (except for swapping) on a Dell 235D (25Mhz 386).
- Mar 1992 · Dell employees help vote for the creation of comp.os.linux
- Aug 1992 · Dell employees active on the Linux-Activists mailing lists.
- Oct 1994 · Dell employees help thier customers run Linux on Notebooks with a footnote that"In this isolated instance these are indeed the opinions of my employer"
- Jun 1995 · Dell tests Linux on Notebooks and notes to potential customers "OS/2 Warp is supported. Linux isn't officially supported but unofficially, it works fine. I've been using these machines for over a year... I'm on the notebook design team at Dell.".
- Mar 1998 · Ralph Nader sends a letter to Michael Dell requesting pre-installed Linux "after learning that Dell and other OEMs were reluctant to offer a Linux client PC on the grounds that it would harm the OEM's relationship with Microsoft."
- Feb 2000 · CNN reports "Red Hat Linux 6.1 is now available on the Dell Inspiron 7500.... The Linux-enabled laptops will cost no more than their Windows 98 counterparts, according to a spokesperson for Dell....With the availability of Linux on its laptops, Dell is leading the pack in the deployment of Linux, ...I think Dell has set themselves as the innovator here,...With their basic business model, they don't have to build 10,000 Linux machines and then worry about getting orders."
- Apr 2000 · Michael Dell says "I think Linux on the desktop has a fair shot over the next couple of years"
- Jun 2000 · Michael Dell responds to "if I log on to your Web site and order a laptop running Linux, will you ship it to me", Dell: "Absolutely. Not only can you order a laptop, but you can order at least one configuration of every single product we sell, and we would encourage you to. We are one of the leading providers of Linux-based systems, and I believe that's a rapidly growing part of the market."
- Aug 2000 · Michael Dell says "Dell is now the No. 2 provider of Linux-based systems worldwide and the first major manufacturer to offer Linux across its full product line"
- Aug 2000 · Michael Dell says "configurations of all Dell products are now designed, tested and certified for Linux. Our factories can now customize each system -- from PCs to servers -- with Linux. "
- Mar 2002 · Media reports that Microsoft killed Dell Linux.
- Jul 2002 · Dell's support channels still provide excellent support on pre-installed Linux Dell Notebooks.
- Jan 2003 · Michael Dell says "We continue to offer Linux on the desktop and there is nothing else to say,"
- Sep 2004 · Near impossible to buy a Dell Linux desktop (they apparently stopped pre-installing though the website suggested they did).
- Sep 2005 · Dell introduced a notebook with pre-installed Linux for the French market.
- Jan 2007 · Dell introduced a notebook with pre-installed Linux in China.
- Mar 2007 · Dell writes "Dell has heard you and we will expand our Linux support beyond our existing servers and Precision workstation line. Our first step in this effort is offering Linux pre-installed on select desktop and notebook systems. We will provide an update in the coming weeks that includes detailed information on which systems we will offer, our testing and certification efforts, and the Linux distribution(s) that will be available. The countdown begins today."
Yes, it's focused a bit heavily on notebooks now - because that's what I'm in the market for - but if your interest is in a different area, feel free to add more links in the comments. After I verify your link I'll add it to the main posting.

Scroll bar control for laptops
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by carlolsen
04/20/07
Add a simple "mouse wheel" device to the edge of a laptop (possibly in multiple locations for convenience) that simply causes the vertical scroll bar of any active winow to scroll.
That way, there is no need to move the mouse pointer over to the scroll bar, in order to scroll, which can be awkward with the little mouse touch pad thingies

Better search options on the Dell Outlet site.
Dell Web Site submitted by tgmaniac
04/20/07
I would like to be able to search for a system on the dell outlet easily. For example - put in a minimum processor speed or search for a specific wireless card on laptops or a minimum number of cores in the processor. Also I would like to see more details about the servers like how many processors the server comes with.

Make Dell desktop systems "QUIET"
Desktops submitted by jtome
04/20/07
I currently own a Dell XPS tower. It works great, but while doing professional design work it gets hot and starts making an awful amount of noise. I've tried turning on the AC during the summer, this helps but the system even gets hot in the winter time! I have another smaller Dell desktop in the other room which does not make noise, but it is not as powerful. I've upgraded my XPS system to have a TV Tuner and watch live TV. This works great but after a few hours of watching the fans are running hard.
I've used Apple Mac Pro systems which are more powerful than my 3.2Ghz XPS system and they are super quiet. I've even gone into computer labs which have all XP Intel extreme systems and another lab with all Mac pro systems and the noise difference is astonishing. You could hear pins dropping in the Mac Pro lab while they have to have the AC on 24/7 in the XP Lab to keep the buzzing noises down.
I've had clients over my house before to record audio for a video I was editing, and I had to ask them to be patient while I powered down my XPS system to cool off !!

Make A Cheaper Laptop
Sales Strategies, Laptop Power submitted by clicky
04/20/07
How about making a low speed, smaller screen "Internet" laptop (kind of like the ones theyre sending to africa) available that would make internet access much more affordable and available to lower income and homeless US RESIDENTS (or just ANYONE) who just needs to access the internet (many cities are now wireless), possibly create and print a resume and dont want to run high power games and business apps. Maybe use Linux . Sell for about $199 and can run from regular batteries ( or 12v DC car battery) with solid state low capacity hard drive.
They can do it for OTHER countries ....why not here? Thanks!

Windows Vista
Operating Systems, Service and Support submitted by markwhitewolf

Now, I am well aware that many people are hesitant to change to Vista. In fact, we've apparently been vocal enough about the return of XP to Home-line machines that something actually came of it! That's wonderful. However, what about those of us who have been left out in the cold in reverse here?
I purchased my E1505 in August of '06. It's a great machine (albeit the keyboard included is inferior, and needs replacement from time to time even in just a home environment w/ one user!), and I love it to death. After forays into IBM/Lenovo and Apple, I came back to Dell hoping that there had been a change. I feel ripped off, and left out that those who purchased their computers two months later than I did are being offered a gratis upgrade to Vista while those JUST outside of that window are staring down the barrel of a $40-$90 dollar upgrade, at minimum.
Why is it that the exclusion has to be October? Particularly for users who purchased higher-end machines and spent a pretty penny, such as myself. If you're looking to keep a customer base, try sending out a coupon for your $1100+ laptop customers and $899+ desktop customers for the upgrade to Vista. Instead, I get a magazine thanking me for my business, pushing newly Vista'd machines. Makes it a cold slap in the face when I just bought a E1505 that was just a shave under completely maxed out.
Tell me Dell, what are you going to do for the customers who are loyal, returners who have bought computer after computer, and would buy again? Where's the loyalty programs of years past that encouraged repeat business? I might as well go to another company, because at least there I get a bone thrown to me from time to time if I purchase regularly enough.
Cordially,
Markwhitewolf

Silent Graphics Card Option
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Advertising and Marketing submitted by fahim.a.sabir
04/21/07
Hi,
Firstly, I think this is a great idea.
I recently bought a Dimension 9200 which included a GeForce 7900 which has fan that is really loud under Vista - so much so that when I put a passive 7600 in my machine, I could barely hear it.
I am actually quite disappointed as the machine was advertised as being cool and quiet. It is far from what I would describe as quiet and has forced me to spend a further £80 to get a replacement graphics card. The only reason I chose this particular card was because it was the cheapest one that gave me 2 DVI ports.
I have been given the excuse about fan control by drivers in Vista, and to be quite frank I don't care. Dell sold me the system, so I hold them responsible for any issues with it.
Please sort this out, these days - with the technology about, there is no reason for a computer to make any noise - I mean Apple computers are silent....

Free Anti Virus and Firewall Preinstalled
Software submitted by cisherwood
04/21/07
I know of many people who have no clue about computer security. Even though I know all about this stuff, I can't be the IT technician for all friends and family.
I know Vista has improved on security features, but, since Dell already bundles software with new computer, why not bundle something useful? I know either McAfee or Norton Internet Security suites are bundled, but these are trials. Most people I know have not purchased a subscription after the trial subscription ended.
So, why not load free security software that automatically updates and scans, such as AVG Free Anti Virus and Zone Alarm Firewall Free Edition? I use that on all of my computers, and since then, I have not had one malware problem.
I know many people are against preloaded 'crapware' - I am, too. But security software that actually works is not crapware, it's necessary. Yes, give people the option to not have it included w/ their purchase, but explain that the program will NEVER expire, and explain all of the benefits.

Delluniversity Student Shop for Europe!
Education, Sales Strategies submitted by rseibel

Please offer a student laptop shop for europe with discounts for the one who need them to write papers, do research and spend much time with them studying.
The delluniversity shop is great you have a big market waiting for you in europe. Find a way to cooperate with the universities, you maybe already deliver products to them.
It is not possibel to get student discount as easy as in the US in Germany for example.
I have to go to https://www.academic-center.de/cgi-bin/pages/dell_notebooks to get an account custimize, than they will order one for me.
- Almoust no one knows about this possibility, you have to google for a while. - You still have an intermediary ordering the Laptop for you it is not direct, it is not dell philosophy...
Try it in a country you suppose you can earn most, than move to the others, it is worht it.
Please fell free to comment.
