Could Dell Own Green?
Environment submitted by adrian

Environmental concern and sustainability are today real issues with consumers and voters in many of Dell's markets. It looks as if a genuine commitment to reducing carbon and cleaning up their footprint will become a more important factor for companies wanting to strengthen consumer loyalty in the coming years.
Dell has already made its environmental commitment clear. My suggestion is that this could become a hallmark of the company - why not make the products, literally, green? If Apple can own 'pretty' and IBM/Lenovo can own 'serious', why can't Dell own 'green'? Dell continues to do a lot to support our environment like our Plant a Tree for Me program and other activities documented on our Environment blog on Direct2Dell. Click here for more details.

Pre-install kid friendly software and set internet properties accordingly.

I am a parent and every time I start looking for computers for my kids I am surprised on how little computer makers focus on setting desktops and laptops to be used by kids.
Just pre-install applications that are used by kids, games, etc, and pre-setup the internet access so it blocks websites, chat rooms, etc that are not appropriate for kids. Hey, you could even have this as an option with different software and settings depending on the kid's age group.
Make it easy for parents and fun and safer for our kids and we'll start buying more computers for our kids.

Observations on Ubuntu Linux systems
Linux submitted by mwtomlinson

As the proud owner of a new Inspiron E1505n laptop, I have a couple of observations:
1 - When I enter my service tag in the "Downloads - Drivers" page, I'm asked to select an OS. Only problem is my OS (Ubuntu Linux 7.04) is not listed. Does this mean I can't download the softmodem and wireless drivers that came installed on my computer?
2 - Related - my system came with Ubuntu installed on a small /boot and a large / partition, both EXT3 filesystems. I prefer separate /boot, /, /user and /home partitions, with the last three using the XFS filesystem. Normally, I'd just do a "clean" install - but I would lose the OS and DellUtility partitions. The problem is that there is apparently no way to get the OS or DellUtility partition images - either as downloadable ISO images or as orderable/purchaseable CD(s). In my opinion, this should be included with the computer as a "system recovery" CD/DVD, but I'd settle for being able to get bootable images, somewhere, somehow...

Extend Gold Technical Support to Home\Home Office
Service and Support submitted by jonnormand

I do Dell warranty work day in and day out. There is a little known option that is not provided to devices purchased under home and home office, but IS provided under the Small Business section of Dell's website. This option is Gold Technical Support that utilizes North American technicians. Why do I bring up the fact that I do warranty work for Dell? Because the #1 complaint I see in the field is not being able to understand the tech on the other end of the phone. When a customer is already frusterated this does NOT help matters. While I do point them to support.dell.com as a viable means of contacting Dell through chat there is still a certain segment of users who basically tell me they demand someone on the phone. (*shrugs* Its the whole tech savvy thing.) I've shown them th options for Gold Technical Support under the small business section of Dell's website and universally no one has said they wouldn't spend $70 for that option. I'm 100% certain I've also kept several somewhat furious users from dropping Dell because of this revelation, at least when it comes time for them to get a new system. Might I suggest expanding Gold Technical Support to the home consumer side of your site as well? I know when it comes time to upgrade my Dell I'm probably going to go that route. $70 is nothing if it means getting someone you can understand.

I currently own a GX270, and have noticed that in an effort to get rid of some wires, they have this card the connects to the motherboard via IDE like ribbon. I would appreciate it if Dell would not change things like this, it makes it hard to upgrade your computer.
I am not going to pay extra $$ to have a computer that is easier to customize. I want to be able to take the system components out of my GX270 case and place them in a bigger case, with better airflow and a better power supply. But that weird card thing won't let me....

Plant a Tree Program - Add to Google Earth
Environment submitted by jeremiah

When people plant a tree add its coordinates & who purchased it to Google Maps. Send a thank you email/letter after their purchase with the coordinates of their tree & a link showing their tree and other peoples trees, donated through Dell.
A map with dots or icons to show the growing numbers would better illustrate the effect of the program. Personally assigned trees would feed people's feeling of personal contribution & could spark tree competitions (my family or company has more trees than yours).
I'm sure the trees are planted in bulk, but each tree can be assigned an individual after the fact.

on June 17, 2007 the price for a 1GB usb flash drive was $319.99 at dell.com http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&s...
at best buy the average price for a 1gb usb flash drive was under $30.00 - i could have more than 10 usb flash drives fro the cost of one at dell.
dell sales rep: So i have one xps 410 with a 20 inch flat screen and dell printer, would you like to add a 1gb flash drive for only $319.99
customer:I dont know if thats going to be big enough, how much for a 2gb model, be sure to quote a quality item, no cheap walmart junk for me.
dell sales rep:only $125.99 which includes biometrics to protect you data mr customer. if you loose it your data will be protected.
customer: let me get this straight i can buy a standard flash drive with 1 gb for $320 or a 2gb w/ biometric for leas than half the cost of a 1gb?
dell sales rep: yes, mr customer that is right
customer: maybe we need to look at the XPS 410 quote and see if there is a model with twice the stuff with more bell and whistles at less than half the price.

Linux Media Players
Linux submitted by tatepc

My only concern in regards to linux installs on your notebooks is hardware support including wirelesss, video, sound, bluetooth, and a dvd decoder. If you supplied those files on a separate disk, or made access easy to executables on your website, that'd be great. No more ndswrapper required, nice.
Oh and lets not forget a stellar media player too. Then it wouldn't matter what distro your running for the most part.[reply]
Would it be too much to ask Dell Developers.. to hire some programmers (or in house) and make a great media player for linux platforms that supported all major audio and video formats?
In the long run, your company might be able to open additional income streams, and be one of the first open source media players that actually sells content too.. like AOL, WinAmp, Real, and Windows Media Players. Thanks!

Add scroll notch to Axim X51 (similar to X30) for easy reading
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Broadband and Mobility submitted by yong54321

Dell pda is very popular when it releases the Dell x30. It is the most affortable and productive with wifi build in and selling way below the competitors.
In X30, the design is well designed, quite different from x50 and onwards. X50 in total is not as user friendly as x30. One of the most use of a x30 is to read pdf files. As said, the x30 scroll notch device on the left side of the pda is very helpful - you can read ebook easily with only 1 hand to scroll down the page.
Beside the absent scrolling device, x50 and above has a more difficult to use wlan scan. X30 is more helpful to provide wireless information.
I have bought 2 units of X30 and were very pleasure of it. The next year, i bought 5 units of X50 and find it dreadful and sold them at online auction quickly. I will consider to buy dell pda again if they improve the usability mentioned.
