Dell submitted by badblood 04/08/07

Dell profits are grand, even during low seasons. Give a little more back to all those people that make it possible - DELL EMPLOYEES! And I don't mean a bonus, I mean an honest to god meaningful salary increase. Include in that all the Dell Dudes working in call centres around the globe.

Celine Dion, Coca Cola and Microsoft

Advertising and Marketing submitted by steveoc 03/14/07

When I buy an CD player, thankfully, it does not come with big stickers all over it saying 'Designed for listening to Celine Dion', and 'LG Recommends Celine Dion'.

Not only would I not play Celine Dion music, but I wouldnt buy an LG player if it had these stickers on them either - out of principal.

What exactly does Dell gain by plastering 'Dell recommends Windows Vista' adverts all over its products and website ? Recommend it for what ? You DO understand that those adverts are offensive to some people ? You do understand that you are alienating a section of your potential market ?

Dell must receive some monetary reward for providing this advertising - so why stop there ?

Lets include some more paid-for advertising on the Dell web site. How about 'Dell recommends that users drink Coca Cola' ? that might bring in a decent subsidy.

There is big money in religion these days as well - so why not sell that out to the highest bidder as well ? 'Dell recommends pentacostal christianity' might be a good start .. unless those oil rich saudis are willing to chip in and replace it with 'Dell recommends that all users convert to Islam'

Lets see a 'Dell recommends Celine Dion' sticker on the CD drive then, and rake in the advertising revenue. At least when things get that stupid, the average punter will be able to read your existing 'Dell recommends Windows Vista' adverts in the right context. 7 Comments »

No monitor

Monitors and Displays submitted by kushboy 02/19/07

One of the only reasons I won't even consider purchasing a computer from Dell is that I was told I could not purchase a system without also purchasing a monitor as well. I don't need a monitor, so don't make me buy one, and I won't. 17 Comments »

Moderate or ability to vote-out a topic

IdeaStorm submitted by jlauro 02/27/07

Many of the items need to be cleaned out. I will not even talk about the problem of duplicate item. For example, in the Servers and Storage area, we can easily find several ideas that are laptop specific. Why bother having categories if they are not enforced, and there doesn't appear to be a way to vote misplaced articles out. Many times the ideas are good, the only problem is they spammed across all categories. 20 Comments »

Option to exclude gray/voted articles from lists.

IdeaStorm submitted by arclight 02/26/07

An option to exclude articles that a user already voted on when bringing up a list in IdeaStorm. For example- to be able to bring up "popular ideas" list without any 'grey' vote articles appearing. 39 Comments »

Reward most popular ideas put into action

IdeaStorm submitted by j.bandringa 04/21/07

There's a lot of interesting ideas on IdeaStorm. It’s time to motivate people even more!

Why not give the persons who posted the most popular ideas, put into action at Dell, a free Dell computer of their choice?

Backlit Keyboards

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by rarmasu 02/21/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option.

I would actually pay extra for that convenience if the option was available.
This could be done for desktops or notebooks.

Check out the white LED backlights on the <ahref>XPS M1730.

small scale build cell in malls/outlet malls

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by jgoose6 05/20/07

Install small scale build cell in malls/outlet malls to configure basic systems for shoppers. Build the systems to order, have the customer return in 1hr for pick-up, build basic configurations, install/download software in small scale burn rack, box the unit and process for pick-up. Eliminate the logistical cost, greatly reduce cycle time, owned and operated by Dell (no retailer / no middle man), customers have the ability to take it home in as little as 1 hr. Benchmark the Gibson guitars custom factory inside of the Opry Mills Mall in Nashville, TN. Comment »

Fire Dick Hunter

Service and Support submitted by dcndn 04/12/07

Despite boards like this and the Direct2Dell blog, the day-to-day customer service experience continues to deteriorate. By shoehorning customers into a preset rubric of customer options, making it difficult to reach a human operator, staffing call centers with individuals who are unable to help customers, and encouraging their customer support representatives to pass-the-buck, Dell's customer service system is resulting in the loss of customers and embarrassment to the company.

Dick Hunter, Vice President of Customer Experience, has failed to revamp his department, which reaches a new-found nadir of customer satisfaction each day. He and the leadership of the customer experience department should be fired, customer service call centers should be relocated back to the United States, and a "one-call" initiative that encourages line-level CSRs to resolve problems immediately should be started. 8 Comments »

Put some attitude into the Latitude

Advertising and Marketing, Latitude products, Laptops submitted by jervis961 05/04/07

Dell needs a new Latitude model for people who need a stylish notebook for work but want it to be capable of play activities also. It should have a LED back lit 13.3 inch high resolution/contrast ratio trans reflective screen that swivels like a tablet but without the touch screen (touchscreen could be an upgrade). The option of a non-glossy screen would be available.

Media buttons on the monitor would be helpful for times when the screen is turned around and wouldn't be accidentally pushed when resting the notebook on your lap. A good example would be when you're on a plane watching a movie, the notebook would fit better in this configuration allowing you to see the screen easier.

Dell should use a design like in this leaked photo of an upcoming ultraportable.

It needs to have options like Dual core processor (Quad core when available for mobile), DVD burner, fingerprint reader, SSD, 5-1 card reader(with a cover so the card doesn't fall out), HDMI, Dolby Certified sound as well as a video card that is DX10 with at least 256mb of RAM(perhaps use cards from the Precision line for things like video editing) . It needs to be dual hard drive capable, 2 headphone jacks, built in microphone and the option of a built in camera 2MP or better. A WiFi hot spot finder would be helpful. Don't forget the docking port and gigabit Ethernet. Please, Please, Please do not skimp on bandwidth, only the newest technology please.

A LED light that can illuminate the keyboard in dark rooms and media connect must be standard. I would actually recommend using a black light over the keyboard as the white letters would pop without using a very bright light.

Vista Sideshow could be an option as well. At least a small monochrome screen with basic information so you don't have to power up the system.

I think there would be a large market for this type of system.

The advertising would be a great boost to Dell's image. Showing how your "new L-attitude" has changed your life. I've always looked at the Apple VS PC ads and wondered why can't I have both. I think Dell can supply the notebook that finally brings work and play together in a stylish but professional looking package.

What other options do you think should be added? 53 Comments »

Sell ink cartridges at local retail

Printers and Ink, Sales Strategies submitted by guardianxps 02/21/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

So, for convenience and ease of access, can Dell sell ink cartridges through local retail stores? I realize Dell is an online store; and not suggesting you stop the online part, but also make it available through retail stores. Considering weather or other natural occurrences, and the latest discomfort from DHL leaving the ink cartridges on the door just to be stolen gets annoying.

We now sell ink cartridges at Staples. Click here for more details

Bring Back the Super Geeks

Service and Support submitted by smilindog2000 05/01/07

In the 90's I helped convince two companies I worked at to switch to 100% Dell. My most convincing argument was simple: "If you have a question about a Microsoft product, just call Dell." Everyone knows that calling Microsoft is a total waste of time, but the Dell support guys would typically first remind me that they don't officially support non-Dell products, but since they knew the answer off the top of their head, they'd tell me anyway. Knowing Dell products isn't enough. Bring back the Super Geeks!

When Dell fired their US based Super Geeks, and replaced them with Indian noobs, I stopped calling. When these guys started arguing with me about whether I needed a replacement motherboard or hard drive on a defective computer, I stopped ordering any warranties on any Dell products.

If Dell brings back the Super Geeks, I'll not only start ordering 3-year on-site service again, I'll start telling my friends to switch back to Dell. I doubt I'm alone here.

Rewards for Dell Shoppers

Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by john_saddington 02/17/07

Dell should provide a way for customers to accrue rewards, or points, for purchases! I have bought a number of Dell computers over the years, and would love to see some appreciation for my allegiance!

For example, every time I buy a computer, I get 100 points. After... say, 300 points, I get 50% off my next purchase, or something to that effect.

Just like Credit Card Rewards! 17 Comments »

Internet Laptop Design Contest

Advertising and Marketing, Laptops submitted by mucho 02/16/07

In order to get direct input from Dell customers, and tie more closely with consumer trends, why not sponsor a contest over the internet to design a line of laptops for home/consumer use? This would tie into Dell's philosophy of direct relationships. So the new laptop would not only be built specifically for you, but also DESIGNED directly by Dell customers. Of course, designs would have to be reviewed by Dell engineers to be sure that they are technically feasible and can be built within cost constraints, etc... Seems like this could be a very cool way to design a new generation of home/consumer laptops thru collaboration directly with Dell customers. 9 Comments »

Allow '+' for E-mail addresses in IdeaStorm registration form

IdeaStorm submitted by deepstar 05/14/07

I use '+' and a suffix in my email address when I register on websites, so I can distinguish between spam and genuine e-mail coming from that site (for example e-bay or amazon).

For example, myaccount@somehost.tld is my email-address. For IdeaStorm I wanted to register with myaccount+ideastorm@somehost.tld.

The registration form complained that this is an invalid email address.
(Also, some mail-systems use '-' instead. Maybe you want to add that too)

kind regards,

Dell should be also cool.

Desktops and Laptops submitted by velegno 05/10/07

Why dell don't leave its image of old-serious company and become a nice one such apple?

This idea storm is cool, and linux, firefox and all that free software. It gives the user other options different from microsoft and its bad image. Think about that the young people know a LOT more of computers than the oldies and they will be the owners in some years... and I really don't know anybody who loves microsoft as so many people loves their iPod.

Dell should be also cool.

Clean-up IdeaStorm

IdeaStorm submitted by josmar52789 05/03/07

If Dell expects us to post ideas on this website, they need to remove some of the junk we are currently suffering with.

Make it easier to find articles, especially our own so that we can see our rank.

By the way, maybe they could remove articles with a promotion score of -1000 or something... It only provides clutter anyway... 14 Comments »

Backlit Keys on Laptops

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Laptops submitted by fwayne 04/20/07

Anyone who has used a laptop in dim or dark lighting knows that the keys are very difficult to see. Back-lighting the keys would be a huge improvement, and for those with vision imparements it could be a real useability feature. There are external keyboards on the market that have this feature and it would be great to have on a business or home class system.

One note: Please dont go for the translucent "light up the whole key" method. This is not very effective. The keys themselves should remain dark, witht the actual charactors being illuminated.

Also, a competitor has used a screen mounted LED to project light onto the keys, this isnt all that great either.

Do you agree? 5 Comments »

Dell machines should be the same price in the Canada as the US

Sales Strategies submitted by trosendal 05/09/07

The price of a given computer in Canada should be the same as the price of the same machine in the US. There is no reason to price gouge on either side of the border. I realize that components are not made in North America so NAFTA doesn't apply and therefore tariffs can be very different from one country to the next but here's an ugly example:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 (1.8 Ghz, 800 FSB)
Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
No Monitor
2 GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667 Mhz - 2DIMMs
320 GB Serial ATA HD (7200RPM) w/Databurst Cache
16x DVD+/-RW Drive
256 ATI Radeon X1300 Pro Video Card
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
2 Years in home next day service

In Canada $ 1348 CAD ($1220 USD)
In the US $ 949 USD

That is almost 30% more expensive in Canada after currency conversion.....

That can't be right. 5 Comments »
