Dell be the first OEM to ship systems with KDE v4.0 on Dec. 11th (you have time to implement!) on all your computer systems, including Windows! Don't wait too long or it will end up taking over and you'll be seen as the company with the short sightedness to have missed out!

Remember Dec. 11th

Business class Linux notebooks with large screens.

Linux, Monitors and Displays, Small Business submitted by nategoose 09/19/07

I check the dell.com/open everyday looking for the day when you have a higher end Linux notebook. Bigger screen and possibly 2 hard drive bays. Maybe a docking station, but not necessary. 1 Comment »

Smaller Form Factor

Desktops submitted by bnkr327 09/19/07

Guys,
I have 4 Dell Desktops, 3 Dell Laptops Needless to say, I like Dell.

I Enjoy that Dell wants to hear what the public wants and is not trying the "This is what they are going to buy" approach.

How about a different form factor?
a Simple 2 box setup:
One Box for the Motherboard and two optical drives
With dual Monitor support and optional - built in Wireless Keyboard and Mouse.
(Also, How about a monitor that I can plug my KB and Mouse into?)

The Second Box a Raid 5 (or Raid 6) E-Sata Setup (Hot Swapable).

Each box not to exceed 12" cubed (I am looking at some cube shaped bookshelving units and think it would be great if I could put my system in two cubes of space.

This Saves me Desk Space, and could solve some of my ugly cable issues. 2 Comments »

15.4 size XPS system

XPS products, Laptops submitted by lilredfoxie 02/16/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

I think theyre needs to be another 15.4" size XPS system, currently the XPS lineup has no middle ground, theres either the m1210 which is too small, or the m1710 which is too large ( I dont count the m2010, since its not really a laptop, its more of its own hybrid desktop/laptop comptuer thing) use the e1505 chassis, give it the cool XPS lights, and a D-dock connectior below
Check out the Idea in Action post for details about our new 15in system.

Add 12-cell battery option to ALL notebooks

Laptop Power submitted by nicopoon 08/23/07

12-cell batteries are now mainstream with many vendors, but not at Dell. Why? See HP: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12152_na/12152_na.html

Having 2 of these batteries would greatly improve mobility. Please vote and support :) 5 Comments »

Make the XPS line the "Mac" crushers

XPS products, Laptops submitted by nicopoon 08/23/07

After all this time I am still amazed that Dell has not been able to offer good hardware options like Apple has been offering for so long, now.

Examples:
- thin & elegant design from small to large size notebook. See the Macbook Pro 17 inch vs. the Dell XPS 1710 (or the rumored frankenstein 1730)
- backlit display and keyboards
- high quality keyboard and speakers
- display axle that folds the screen down as you open it, which saves valuable space when seating on an airplane

That, plus 12-cell batteries that HP offers, or 64SSD drive options that Toshiba has too. Dell has the opportunity to offer it all and make amazing premium notebooks. But, it's not done it in all these years.

High(er) spec Ubuntu laptops for UK/France/Germany

Inspiron products, Linux, Laptops submitted by jarocooke 08/24/07

I am literally sitting here willing to buy a Dell Ubuntu the second it is available, however there are a few things that it must have:

1. FSB of 667Mhz (at least)
2. A Core 2 Duo processor
3. A 1440x900 display

These things are all available options on the US 1420N model and were they available in the UK I would already have bought one. Please offer a higher spec laptop with Ubuntu installed as soon as possible. 4 Comments »

You have to be inventive and innovative!

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Sales Strategies submitted by grinser 08/24/07

What I miss from Dell is innovation and new inventions!
You don't get new product ideas until others are long ahead!

For example, who was the major one developing the new Windows Home Server boxes with Microsoft? Not dell, it was HP! Why wasn't it dell?

Another example: Tablet PC - where was dell when the first Tablets where introduced? Why do we only get a dell more than a "decade" later? You could do so much with and for this formfactor - build a designer centric tablet with high resolution display (at least 1440x900) and high quality inking capabilities (wacom technology) - look at other ideas to get a thought.

Where is a Dell UMPC? Plenty room for innovation here!

Where is the Dell All In One PC that successfully competes with Apple iMac in looks, functionality and price?

Where is a Dell Touchscreen PC like HP has? Do you want to stay behind until Apple introduces something similar to the iPhone but in computer formfactor?

Where is good advertising in europe? Why don't you make Dell attractive to students like in America? Students are potential customers for the future! Take a look at the Apple on Campus program and advertising! You might get it right in the usa, but NOT in europe! I want to be informed about your student discounts (through advertising (on website, on campus, ...), etc.) instead of having to ask myself via chat or hotline if you kindly give discounts!

Why can we only pay with credit cards in some european countries? For some people, credit card payments on the internet are still a show-stopper! (because they have non or of security concerns!)

I like your product designs, but you could do it much better! A product similar to the macbook pro would bring you many customers if perfectly marketed!

Why is your website so cluttered? At least on the german page there are often suddenly english texts and images. Images aren't correctly fitted, design is cluttered. Maybe get help from an design agency like frog design!

Please build a more clear and innovative website, readable font sizes and offers and please give us more detailed pictures of your products - we want high resolution images! Customers often hardly buy a product they never touched but with big images, a decision to buy is easier made than with those little pictures on the current website!

Roll out your retail strategy in Europe more quickly that you can compete with HP and others! Don't fixate on one particular partner, use every retail partner like others do! 8 Comments »

Universal Notebook Power Adapter

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by slateslate 08/24/07

1. I've owned Dell Latitudes and Inspirons since 1998.
2. Your power adapters have a life expectancy of 12-18 months under daily mobile use. It is annoying for have these adapters fray.
3. Subsequent generations of notebooks each have unique adapters. Make all adapters the same after this generation of notebooks. So that should one power adapter fray, I can swap with another Dell adapter even if it's from a different notebook model.

OR

1. MAKE YOUR POWER ADAPTERS LESS PRONE TO FRAY AT THE END WHERE THE ADAPTER MEETS THE COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4 Comments »

Make better default wallpapers for your computers

Advertising and Marketing submitted by wing044 08/25/07

Dell make better wallpapers for your computers please! I know many people will change it as soon as possible, nonetheless the out-of-box exprience is important to your branding.
Looking at the stock wallpapers on current generation Dell laptops, they're just enlarged logos on color backgrounds which can be done by any Photoshop novice. XPS, Inspiron, Vostro they all get the same lame and soulless style. This is far short of the "Express yourself" slogan.

Why not do something like this,
XPS - closeup of a jet engine with a Dell badge in the middle. Communicates the power of the XPS brand

Inspiron
Midnight Blue - City lights, looks cool
Spring Green - grassland, closeup of a leave or a frog in a pond
Alpine White - forest covered with snow
Ruby Red - piles of freshly picked tomatos or apples
Espresso Brown - sitting in a cafe
Sunshine Yellow - Tulips under the sun

Or otherwise hire some professionals to do it. 11 Comments »

How about a stylish Notebook that can be swirled or rotated?

Laptops submitted by petzymathuram 08/25/07

One among the recent releases of Hp includes a laptop that can be swirled or twisted or adjusted
It means:
- In a notebook the monitor part can be rotated / adjusted moved this way and that way (like how we adjust desktops)
- when you open your laptop you can proceed normally with the monitor still fixed facing you or can be changed or rotated or swirled around, just to prvent light reflection or to have an easy and relaxed position...

How about this?......;) 4 Comments »

Dell separate the ordering process so the customer can skip sections they don't want.

Dell Web Site submitted by jorge 08/25/07

Dell separate the ordering process, currently Dell forces (the home shopper) to go through a lengthy process to get their orders done allow the customer to skip sections they don't want. Separate the ordering process by

1. Hardware (options relating to hardware to be built into the system)
2. Warranty (hardware)
3. OS (this should only affect the remaining steps not the former)
4. OS Support if needed
5. Accessories (printers, usb add on's etc.
6. Software
7. Summary
8. Shipping
9. Financial
10. Paper trail summary printout or e-mail receipt.

At the end of each allow the customer to skip the next, of course Shipping, Financial and Receipt will be required to be processed (no skip option).

Efficiency Dell, this will give you a head start on the rest. 8 Comments »

How an existing windows customer migrate to or install Ubuntu?

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by yesmathew 08/26/07

As Dell also pre-installs Ubuntu on selected Notebooks and Desktops. As most of the Dell computers are Ubuntu friendly. Many existing Dell users would like to switch to or try Ubuntu Linux, a Dell web site or wiki dedicated on this subject will encourage to try a better and safer free operating system to those who do not want to dump their computers for new non-free operating system. Help reduce e-waste. Save Planet.

Remember:
- "Windows viruses” are not computer viruses.
- "Windows bugs” are not computer bugs.
- "Windows blue screen deaths” are not computer blue screen deaths.
- "Windows performance issues" are not computer performance issues. 27 Comments »

Take care with the market of developing countries

Advertising and Marketing submitted by laujie 08/24/07

In the developing country (such as china and india) the system for trade on the network isn't perfect, many people was cheated,so
many people don't like to buy the goods with network, and that when a computer was selled dell company must get money frist, then
sends the computer to the customer. It will let many people don't believe it,and they think that it was a pitfall. So I hope DELL company
can do that"sends the computer frist then get the many or the customer can pay by installments for the PC"to let the customer believe
it isn't a pitfall. And DELL isn't a wellknow brand in China. Now you may ask me why,and you'll don't believe it,won't you? But, I must
tell you that is true in China, many of chinese don't know DELL.Because that many Chinese touch the PC in the internet cafes in the
frist time(the PC have no brand,DIY by the boss). When they want to buy PC with a famous Brand, they'll watch TV to find a famous
Brand isn't throught the Newspapers and magazines.Because People think that only some famous companies can have advertisements
on CCTV(include some famous Televisions) ,only some bad companies(isn't famous and the company want to cheat the persons'
money)have advertisements with newspapers, magazines and websites.
We can see "Free Upgrade" in the advertisement of DELL,It's good for customers, but most chinese think that should be a fraud,so
change the word "Free Upgrade" into "Discount" ,I think it's better.
Most pc of Dell were selled by the network, so the website should be designed well.In fect, the webpage of DELL China isn't
good,The webpage of US is better only.I think Apple and SONY are good at it(The webpage of APPLE -China & SONY-China are the
examples),So DELL Company Must be do it well.
Today the products of DELL are colorful, but the products' skin don't have many styles(skin of INSPIRON are the same),such as
INSPIRON 1420,1520&1720, the face are the same, not creative, only the color are different.
Expect that ,DELL NOTEBOOK PC don't have enought SIZEs for Customer to choese, such as INSPIRON don't have the size which are
12.1 , 13.3 Inch. XPS also don't have enought SIZEs for customer to choese,IT don't have the SIZEs ,such as 14.1& 15.4. Comment »

Make ordering Notebooks in Europe similar to the US

Dell Web Site submitted by exul182 08/22/07

Where I come from (Romania), in order to get myself a notebook with my ideal configuration, i have to send the specs I want to a distributor which send me back a price, of course higher than the one in the countries that buy directly from Dell. Problem is they shove some parts down my throut that i don't really need. Ordering from the Dell site and being able to play with different configurations is only available in a hand-full of countries and we would greatly appreciate not having the intermediate companies in the way. Also..for some reason...some notebooks didn't make it on the market here...like the Inspiron 1420 ( we have the 1520 and the 1720..but no 1420). Please make it easier for all the countries in the EU as it is for Germany and England. No more intermediates. 7 Comments »

All possible options should be available via the website

Dell Web Site submitted by steve0073 07/27/07

On the Dell website, many options are not available. But they are available when ordering by phone. For example, the Inspiron 1720 can't be configured with an 7200rpm harddrive, but it can be ordered with such harddrives by phone (yes, I asked).

Now, this is what I don't get:
Every person who wasn't asleep during the last 20 years can tell you that taking orders by phone is much, much more expensive for a company than taking orders via a website. Orders by phone take time, use up expensive human resources. You maybe need to hire more people for this, and the already hired ones are stressed out and don't have the time for real special cases where they would be really needed. And they maybe even forget to call you back because they're just too busy (yes, happened to me twice now).
That adds up to more costs and bad customer service.
If you would allow configuring everything on the website, you would have a lot less people calling your customer service.

So please Dell, provide all the possible options directly on the website so we can order what we want/need much easier and with less stress, and less cost for you. 5 Comments »
