Build a Dell Linux Distribution
Linux, New Product Ideas, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jemfisher

With the wave of support for the Linux kernel to power desktop PC's, I think its time for a company with the quality build that Dell has to provide users with PC's that work for them. The adoption of Linux to power Dell PC's would give Dell a greater freedom to move forward with innovation. With the adoption of a Linux kernel Dell would be able to sell PC to meet users' demands. Businesses demand different machines than home users, students demand different machines again, machines targeted at younger users, etc.

No monitor

One of the only reasons I won't even consider purchasing a computer from Dell is that I was told I could not purchase a system without also purchasing a monitor as well. I don't need a monitor, so don't make me buy one, and I won't.

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart
02/17/07
Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)
OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as: - Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections! - Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls - Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others &nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM] - PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program - Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing - Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player - Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System
Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.
CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Stripped down, fast Linux Box
Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by pawprintz

How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast
Dell sees the value of this idea, and is keeping the sugestions for a Linux small form factor on the radar. john_h will let the community know of any new information as it comes.

Better Notebook sound and features
Laptops submitted by foxx

I was looking for a high end notebook for video editing. Every Dell model I looked at was missing something essential.
Most serious is the lousy sound. I can understand for low end notebooks, but high end need A REAL SOUND CARD. I would have been willing to buy a sound card, but that required a PCMCIA slot and you had elimintated those. I gave up.

The Clutter Is Forming: We Need A Moderator
Dell Community, IdeaStorm submitted by googideas
02/17/07 **IMPLEMENTED**
Approximately 48 hours into its life, and Ideastorm is filling up with repetition and senseless comments. Since moderation cannot be exercised by the participants a moderator a la Dell Employee must put up her hand. Or his hand. We aren't picky!
One: Repeating the same ideas from earlier posts is a pain to the reader and a waste of space and time. These should be removed.
Two: Suggestions which are without applicability to the issues at hand should be removed: one post states that "Dell should set up Dell Pay to compete with Paypal." Sigh. Why?
For what unique purpose? Dell's business is not online payments, in the same way Apple's is not selling music (they sell music at a loss to sell iPods at a gain). There is no benefit to Dell and it meets no need.
Since this format is experimental and fully funded by Dell, I encourage Dell to cut the wheat from the chafe and remove as much as they see fit. For all of the "I have rights" and "freedom of speech" advocates, you don't. This is a place where the good keep going and the bad go out.
The less posts the better. It provides Dell what they want: the opportunity to test strong ideas properly. Without the removal of clutter, the good ideas will by dint of the time they are posted (e.g. 3am) and the increasing volume of posts, inevitably suffer at times the forest's size despite the grandeur of the tree in question.
I may be going against the grain of popular opinion, but you add your vote to this post if you believe in the goal of this site, and not the freedom it offers to utter the first inane thing which comes to mind. jackie_c is IdeaStorm's moderator. Mark posts as "Duplicate"
IdeaStorm submitted by thorin_2
02/21/07
Many posts are duplicates. A demote button may help but really you need a "Is duplicate" button. If an item get's tagged "duplicate" a certain number of times it get's dropped. Perhaps only after enough tags that include a link to the source or superior post that is *being* duplicated. The fact that there are so many duplicate posts really muddies up the survey pool and makes the vendor's work all that more difficult to compile poll results.

Dell Thin Clients
Servers and Storage submitted by beijaflor
02/19/07
Dell is able to make full PCs for $359.
Imagine what would be the prize of "terminals" for thin client computing ... - a low-consuming processor at 500-700 Mhz - no fan design - on-board 128 Mb flash - on board 512 Meg RAM - VESA mountable - solid state architecture - PXE bootable
- Remote OS and application : http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/9097 Or even Windows Terminal Server for small deployment if people have the money to pay it.
Thin computing answers to 75% of needs related to computers in school, librairies, hospitals and more ...
Dell could even sell the servers coming with the "thin-clients solutions" ...
I also see the Screen+Keyboard+Mouse option
And think about the network ... With modern thin-computing solutions, the deployments are made on a larger scale (thousands of terminals across fiber networks) and with thin-clients provided by a large company like Dell, the savings could be on the hardware AND on the software ...

The Dell Axim PDA is not super-popular, but I think if it moved into the SmartPhone realm (especially in order to compete with upcoming iPhone) then it could pick up some market-share and be a great device for US cell phone providers.

PC with healthcare related products and services
Healthcare, Service and Support submitted by dr.shanghai
03/01/07
Thinking outside the box... let's have creative ideas around healthcare related products and services by maximizing the use of PC and wireless technology to different age groups etc.
For example: partner with healthcare providers to monitor patients such as diabetes and record blood sugar daily or weekly and send out data via wireless to the doctors. We can provide healthcare services to our customers with different packages. Innovation is the key for this idea to be implemented.
