National Call Centers [and other Service Improvement Ideas]

Service and Support submitted by henrieb 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

As a corporate customer I like Dell's products and my USA customer support. I have read the web about all the people that have had problems with Dell customer service and mine and others are not isolated incidences. If you want people to be loyal take a hint from the corporate sales and give Home users even a little customer support. My corporate help does not read scripts, they have the power to take ownership and fix the problem. Granted I do buy Gold support. If Dell thinks it saves money for bad support; I have personally talked 20 or 30 people out of buying a Dell.

* Addition: After reading several of the comments on this topic it appears that what we really want is someone in customer support that will listen to us, and hopefully help us. Culture and language barriers just make this harder. Maybe a better way to track customer performance would be to find out if they really helped someone and not how fast they can end the call. Dell management needs to start taking ownership of this problem. Maybe Dell management needs to start calling Dell support with fake problems and see it the system they created can help them, it sure does not work for us.

Simplest Laptop Alarm... Can it be this easy?

Broadband and Mobility, New Product Ideas, Laptops submitted by kschang 06/27/07

I just thought of something that seems to be so obvious, it's... well... doh. Tell me what's wrong with the idea...

Latest notebooks have Bluetooth, right? (many/most of them anyway).

You need to "pair" Bluetooth with another device, right? Say, your phone?

Bluetooth's range is only, what? 30 ft at most? And that's controllable depending on transmission power, right? Actual effective range is a bit less.

Imagine this: say you pair the Bluetooth in the notebook to your cellphone. The cellphone stays in your pocket.

Someone steals your notebook. When it reaches 15 ft or so from the phone, the weak Bluetooth signal is lost, so the the device is disconnected, pair is interrupted.

ALARM THEN GOES OFF on BOTH the cellphone AND the notebook!

Can it be that easy to implement? Sounds like this is 99% software. WIth up to 128-bit encryption available in Bluetooth, this pairing should be almost impossible to fake. 11 Comments »

Make Media Direct available for downlaod

Dell Web Site, Software submitted by cgarjeff 06/27/07

There is nowhere to download Dell Media direct software. Not the repair utility, but the full 500MB+ file. Everything else is available but this software.I have searched and googled many times to find it, and always get a broken link to notebookforums.com. I have read numerous threads about how impossible it is to get the right media direct software from Dell. Please post machine specific files in the download sections. 3 Comments »

Two PCs in one box (I don't mean dual/quad core)

Desktops and Laptops submitted by si 06/28/07

1 box which contains two seperate personalities:

If you want to do light work like surfing the web and/or downloading files then press the green power-on button. This powers up a very simple processor, a reduced area of your LCD monitor, a light version of Windows/Linux and storage running on solid state memory e.g. memory stick. This means e.g. you can leave your big file downloads running while only using a fraction of the normal power required.

If you want to do heavy processing work then press the normal power-on button. This powers up all the things that eat power like 100% of your big LCD screen, fast processors/multi processors, HDDs, DVDs, high-end graphics cards and all the associated cooling fans etc.

Ideally the eco processor can even add an extra boost to the performance system when needed. What do you think? 19 Comments »

Option for gigabit ethernet for new Inspirons.

Inspiron products submitted by benjesuit 06/29/07

Currently, only 10/100 is offered.

Would be awfully nice to have the option to have gigabit ethernet on the Inspiron 1520/21, 1720/21.

That being 10/100/1000. 7 Comments »

This is exactly the form factor I want in a home PC:

Desktops, New Product Ideas submitted by jmxz 06/30/07

This is exactly the form factor I want in a PC for most rooms (my living room, my home office, terminals for all the non-computer intensive users at work). It's fanless, and takes no unnecessary space in a room since it fits totally in (yes, in) the wall socket..

http://parthsuthar.com/derive/2007/06/20/a-computer-so-small-it-fits-in-a-wal...
http://www.jadeintegration.com/prinfo.php?i=efi6700

U.K. firm Jade Integration has unveiled a computer so small, it fits into a wall socket and is powered via Ethernet. The Jack PC, a rival to the smallest PC in the world, can hook up to a standard monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and runs Windows CE, the stripped-down version of Windows often used in portable devices. It comes with up to 64 MB of flash memory and 128 megs of RAM, so don't expect to play Half-Life 2 on it, but it should be able to handle basic Internet functions decently.

With my home directory (and media files, etc) on file server in my garage anyway - and at work all compute intensive stuff is done on servers anyway, I don't need hard disks or fans or large boxes in most of the computers I use.

It seems for everything except laptops (which need to be self contained) and gaming machines (where obviously you need bigger chips, more memories, and big graphics cards) I think this form factor computer would meet most needs.

Update: Better information from the company that makes it here: http://www.jadeintegration.com/prinfo.php?i=efi6700 10 Comments »

iPhone - No VIDEO - No Java Applets - DELL Make a Phone with Video OUT & Real Sun Java RTE

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dell, New Product Ideas submitted by reg 07/01/07

It's True.

iPhones have no video playback output.

Did you just download a $19.99 movie from iTunes into your iPhone?
Wanna watch it?
3.5 inches all you get - and it's letterboxed , so it is more like 2.5 inches of Hollywood.

And you wont find this on the Apple iPhone,
REAL Sun Java:

Tuquito is an easy-to-use, desktop-oriented Linux distribution which is very popular within Latin America, and is tailored for spanish-talking users. It would be a great OS for DELL PCs and laptops in the Latin-american market. 6 Comments »

English Speaking Support in the Caribbean

Service and Support submitted by creativepragmatic 06/28/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

I am based on an island in the English speaking Caribbean. Every time I order from Dell, I use the website because I fear not understanding or being misunderstood by the Spanish speaking reps assigned to my country. While I appreciate the Spanish speaking reps' efforts, communicating with them is frustrating for me and when I make a large order on behalf of a client, it is important that each order be 100% correct. Mistakes are costly for me, my clients and Dell. Dell should either set up a small sale/service center staffed by native English speakers to service customers in the English speaking Caribbean or route our calls to a North American center staffed by native English speakers. I live in a country where I know Dell sells a lot of computers, will likely sell more in the future as the country develops, and where people love famous brands. Providing native English support to native English customers should not be that difficult.

Apple's Web Site is "WOW"

Dell Web Site submitted by robert 06/27/07

http://www.apple.com/

Apple has a "Wow" Web Site. Just look at it. Who would not want to navigate through this site and BUY something? Notice the smooth, calm and pleasing "non tabs" at the top, the uncluttered and not to many items per page and the combinations of black backgrounnds, white backgrounds, mixed with great color. Large pictures that grab your attention. Notice the symmetry of each page. Anyone that likes order appreciates symmetry. They do not clutter and confuse with too much verbiage which takes up too much space and no one reads. A little humor on some pages as well as interesitng info. This should not be hard stuff for DELL to create. A web site that is a "Vacation" will sell computers. Hey, I like/own DELL, but Apple's site really makes me want to buy something..maybe an Iphone. 31 Comments »

How about limiting user name length?

IdeaStorm submitted by mistern 06/24/07

Yeah right, jorge_is_my_hero_he_is_so_cool_and_smart_i_think_he-should_be_president is a funny guy. Still, his name is too long.

How about limiting user names to 20 characters (or maybe even less)?

Come on, you bloody like this idea! 4 Comments »

IdeaStorm submitted by kenjennings 06/25/07

The next/previous links are found at the bottom of the page:

« Previous 1 2 3 ... 396 Next »

I think they should also appear at the top of the page to reduce the amount of scrolling needed to get to the paging controls. 3 Comments »

Produce Computer For car?

New Product Ideas submitted by kim_hon_yap 06/24/07

It was not surprise to see use of computer in high end cars like BMW and Benz but have we ever thought of 'built in' computer for mid and low end commercial cars? This may be a crazy idea but using computer for car basic functions control is not impossible to make some breakthrough! Such as much effective security and safety control would be area of consideration. 6 Comments »
