The Internet Computer

New Product Ideas submitted by googideas 02/17/07

This idea is called the Internet Computer (IC) as opposed to the regular PC.

It comes with nothing but internet surfing capability, like Firefox, photo music video storage, standard gaming specs, and a media CDR drive.

I wouldn't buy it, but I am not the mass-market consumer who is young, plays on the internet in many ways, and almost never utilizes most of the guts. Can you make an IC notebook for about $500 retail?

If a piece of software like Excel or Word is needed then one can buy it separately. Get back to the bare bones and locate this niche, and you'll find both huge sales and a willingness of this segment of the market to pay for the trinkets to personalize and dress up their IC.

This is not an idea for me; it's an idea for Dell to make inroads and get back on top.

Ubuntu & Win XP Dual boot; Open office and Firefox /Thunderbird

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Desktops and Laptops submitted by bsteff 02/20/07

Sell desktops (and yes laptops) with dual boot of Ubuntu AND Win XP. My particular work environment cannot tolerate Vista and I don't like the control Microsoft is attempting to exert over my PC. Consumers are NOT mindless idiots!!! GEt rid of DRM. I will gladly pay for digital content and I will not sell/give it to a friend or acquaintance (read pirate/thief). GWA is bad enough with threats from Microsoft to crank up the pressure on non-genuine PC's. I am a physician and I control, to a large extent, at my hospital system what type of software we get in the form of PACS (computerized x-ray digital image viewing on local PC's - thin client) Almost all of imaging is now digital.

The threat of Microsoft DRM degrading images used for the critical diagnosis of patients is intolerable such that we are exerting considerable pressure on vendors to provide clients that run under open source. Why open source? Simplyu because it puts us back in control. If images are degraded and critical diagnoses missed, we docs and our patients are going to pay the price. Ubuntu, and other GUI's of LInux (such as Xandros) can let us avoid this. I run Ubuntu routinely and find it dependable and easy to use. I can trust it. Microsoft has lost my last shred of trust with Vista and its DRM and driver situation.

On another front, we in medicine are under tremendous pressure to cut costs. For a faculty of over 400 at my medical school and staff of about 1500, the cost of MS Office is tremendous. Open Office Org. software is a great help in this regared and even has features that MS Office does not offer. MS has lost our trust. We will probably all use Open Office Org in the future - so why not offer it as loaded at purchase time. I would be willing to pay a nominal fee, say $30-50 for the loading up of the software on my PC so htat i can use it immediately when I receive it.

Dell should know that the loading of all the JUNK software that comes on my PC's from Dell is a Large factor in my reluctance to order new PC's at shorter intervals, no matter what the technical hardware advances.

Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser

Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**

Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF.
Firefox advocates at Dell have initiated discussions and driven action around exploring alternative internet browsers and experiences. As you can tell from our response to the Linux community, open source continues to be a part of our conversations about new products and services.

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Alternative browser - Opera

Software submitted by yves 02/23/07

I am surprised to notice that Opera is not mentionned as an alternative to Windows Explorer. OPERA is the most secure internet browser, and is easy to use "out-of-the-box" without having to install so many plug-ins as with Firefox to make it usable. It is also FREE.

Firefox, Mozilla thunderbird as well as mozilla sunbird

Linux, Software submitted by rakeshinnovation 02/27/07

I have been an internet user for the past 5 years, I have used all almost all the browsers, and without doubt i can say that in terms of performance, security, and user interface the open source browsers are the best, the kind of addons and features i get with Firefox i will never be getting with internet explorer, so i was thinking why do not dell ship computers with Firefox Mozilla thunderbird and the calendar software subird???? it could add to the efforts of the open source community, me as a supporter for the open source community would love to see Dell systems with open source applications, I would request that all people who support open source please cast your valuable vote for this idea, I was also thinking that if the Mozilla community cooperates with Dell , Dell could have a customized browser which will be really good for the customers of the Dell and it could add value to the Dell line of products, lets see the what Dell's thinks about this idea//?

Do post your feedbacks,

Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office

Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/17/07

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)

OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
- Firefox: web browser with popup and privacy controls; say goodbye to Internet Explorer infections!
- Thunderbird: email program with free anti-spam and privacy controls
- Pidgin: instant messaging all-in-one program for popup-free MSN, Yahoo, AOL and others
&nsbp;[ed: GAIM was renamed Pidgin in April 2007 to settle the issue with AOL's trademark on AIM]
- PDFCreator: creates Adobe PDF files from any program
- Scribus, Inkscape & GIMP: desktop publishing, freehand drawing & powerful image editing
- Audacity & VLC: multi-track audio editing & universal all-in-one media/video/movie/DVD player
- Stellarium & Celestia: planetarium viewer & outer-space mapping, like Google Earth, but for our Solar System

Pre-installed quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. Cast your vote for Linux and other free software. Cast your vote for the Universal Education PC [ed: article removed/merged by dell_admin] utilizing free software.

Firefox support on Japanese website

Dell Web Site submitted by tenrou 02/20/07

Unbelievable as it may be in these days of near 20% market penetration for Firefox DELL's Japanese website denies access to the system-configuration pages to any and all browsers except Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and above or Netscape 4.6 or above.
Having such an antiquated browser-check is totally ridiculous!
I was considering buying a XPS m1210 on my next visit to japan but unless this issue is fixed (and I thus can surf in and order my DELL with my Ubuntu-powered computer) I will most definitely look elsewhere for a laptop that suits my needs.

On an unrelated side-note I would very much like not having to pay Microsoft-tax on any machine that I might be purchasing from DELL as I have no intention of running any of their software on it. But i suppose that is discussed in other parts of this site as well. Comment »

Affordability and Durability for Student Laptop Initiative

Education, Laptops submitted by hdrews 02/21/07

If our district was to even consider a 1:1 student to computer ratio, we would need something much more affordable than what is out there now. Money could be saved by cutting storage space, video quality, and more. What our students generally need at their desks is the ability to surf the net and work in an "office" suite. Advanced projects can be done in our more robust labs.

Also, a laptop initiative is no good if in-house support increases 10-fold. These have to be durable. If they fall off a desk, they have to keep working. Replacement batteries need to be less expensive or an extra battery should come with each purchase. 18 Comments »

Disable the spyware pre-built into Vista - or warn customers about it before the purchase

Operating Systems, Software submitted by jmxz 03/21/07

One of your software vendors (Microsoft) seems to have a habit of building spyware into the software they get you to pre-install.

There are many examples, but I'll give 3 specific examples here to let you know

For one example, the Windows Media Player
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,3995,00.asp
"February 21 Associated Press report that alleged the existence of DVD-tracking spyware hidden deep within Windows Media Player for Windows XP (aka Windows Media Player 8, or simply MPXP). .. It's bad enough that the very existence of a DVD cache might tempt nosy roommates, private investigators, and overzealous government agents. But, the article asserts, privacy experts fear that the ID-based tracking mechanism could even be exploited by media conglomerates"
I don't really want Microsoft and my ISP knowing my preferences in home movies; and I assume neither do many other Dell customers.

For another example, Windows Activtation's Hardware checks. I don't want Microsoft checking on what kinds of hard drives I put in my system - for example, if they don't like one particular hardware vendor in the future, I don't want them making my machine flaky on purpose.

For a third, Vista has spyware that scans your software as well looking for software they don't like:
http://www.itbusinessedge.com/item/?ci=20916
http://www.itwire.com.au/content/view/6149/983/
"Vista 'Spyware': The Best Thing to Happen to Linux" "Microsoft's intention to crack down on software piracy by putting what amounts to spyware on users' computers. Now I'm thinking twice about whether I really need or want this new operating system."

.

Remember, it's us your customers buying these machines - not Microsoft.

And I promise you your customers would prefer getting their machines spyware-free regardless of how well-intentioned it was.

And as much as your home customers don't like it; corporate IT security should be even more panicked that your servers out of the box are off sending packets around the internet at one of their competitor's (many of your customers are competitors of the company in question) requests.

If you can't (for technical reasons) disable these spyware features - please make sure a pretty visible "spyware warning" is placed right on the infected OS's right on the "select your OS" part of your web page; since I'm pretty sure your customers would at least like to be warned that you're helping companies spy on your customers. 15 Comments »

BOYCOTT VISTA!

Operating Systems submitted by reg 03/21/07

Dell Dudes,

Microsoft reserves the right to spy on your computer.

The more you learn how Microsoft EULA has the right to enter your computer, check out what software you are using, and also use the DRM tools in Vista to prevent you from seeing files, data, videos, or hearing 'unauthorized' music files - the more you get a sick, sinking feeling in your gut that someone else has taken control of your machine.

US Federal Government Agencies have BANNED Microsoft Vista, and for good reason.

The Microsoft EULA takes control of your machine, stating directly: "this agreement only gives you some rights to use the software. Microsoft reserves all other rights." Even potentially deleting files or disabling programs.

Compared to the costs of Apple OS X or any Linux Distribution,

The Costs of Windows Vista are Unacceptable.

Keep in mind that Microsoft was convicted by U.S. Courts for its criminal behavior, and is being forced to pay $4 million A Day by the European Union for being in violation of their judgments.

Anti-freedom Vista takes away your rights - do you want to Confirm or Deny?

BOYCOTT WINDOWS VISTA MACHINES!

If you support Linux, freedom, democracy, or just want to keep control of Your own machine that You buy with Your own money, PROMOTE this idea now.

Microsoft - Where in the world did you think you were going to go today?

Let Dell know - You Don't Want Windows Vista. 984 Comments »

No Interest for Students

Education submitted by badduri 03/21/07

There shouldn't be any interest for students buying computers.

These days paying fee is costly issue.

To buy a computer paying $600 - $1000 is hard ( i know ppl will eventually buy them but giving this option would make you a hot pick ). Comment »

PXE OS install?

Operating Systems, Desktops and Laptops submitted by grtechguy 03/21/07

How about shipping machines without OS and PXE enabled by default to connect to an OS repository?

Choose your linux (free) or windows OS (much money) to download and install via broadband connection.

This could allow to reimage to alternate OS's at anytime. Comment »

Make Dell website more effeciency

Dell Web Site submitted by ken_li 03/21/07

Why we don't sell our proudct as a solution package. For example, I want to buy a notebook, I would like to investigat the speaker, wireless mouse, wireless AP etc. But DELL website can't take them together just put these related proudcts as a category column list so that customer can easy to select these product as a package.

That should be useful for consumer customer. It wast too many time to find all customer want to do a deal. And more critial that cause I am tired to find the accessories to math my system. so I give up.......

How can we do more homework to win back customer like me?

How to improve the customer's experience who buy system online? 2 Comments »

Facial Recognition Using a Webcam

Software, XPS products submitted by lektronimo 03/21/07

Could a facial scanning software be integrated into XPS systems, so maybe along with fingerprint readers we can get two modes of protection against data theft? Don't know what the camera resolution must be to plot the dots on the picture, but I'm guessing around 2mpx would be more then enough. Obviously, you would get difficulty in unlit rooms, so a small led flash could be incoperated next to the rotating camera.

And can this be somehow used with Vista Ulitmate's BitLocker function?

Check out my other idea as well, it could tie in with this one easier. Comment »

XPS and Alienware

XPS products, Desktops and Laptops submitted by guardianxps 03/21/07

How about we see a system which is on both Alienware and Dell/XPS.

Kind of a hybrid between both systems.

Since they are both under the same company Dell, why not.

XPS and Alienware customer both get to share technologies with each other.

Maybe combine XPS and ALX into a new breed of system.

1 portable and desktop version. 3 Comments »

Products that we want

Laptops submitted by kuroyama 03/21/07

OK... I would offer that while most users use the windows or linux operating systems, that all users can agree that Apple makes very attractive Apple makes hardware that people WANT. Things that are attractive to the eye, and pleasing to the touch.

Dell IMO makes nice products. But the are like wrenches. People buy wrenches because they NEED them, few people actually WANT any given type of wrench. So when you go to buy such a tool, you buy based on two things;

1) cost
2) reliability

As long as it wont break, or its got a guaranteed replacement if it does, then pretty much cost is the deciding factor. Once that given use is complete, the wrench is forgotten until its needed again.

Much unlike an iPod, or iBook. People WANT these things and spend time obsessing over them. I shouldnt be very hard for a company with the power of Dell to build products that people will WANT. Get some designers together, generate some ideas. There havent been any radical changes in laptop design in recent memory, but some products have stood out (IBM ThinkPads, Apples new metal powerbooks, Slender Sony VAIOs) Each of these products have had distinctive look and feel that have generated user following

I think a user following based on love of Dell products vs. love of Dell product pricing would really help to grow Dell's business. 3 Comments »
