DELL - Standardize all countries or most of them at least.

Sales Strategies submitted by stormrider451 Mar 28

I think there is a big opportunity for DELL to come out with an innovative sales strategy that not many computer companies employ currently. They would be able to mine the fast growing international market better than other companies. As far as I have been able to look, all computer companies have differences accross the countries they serve in terms of the products they sell, the upgrades one can do to these and prices. I know this would be a process that would take a lot of time to do because you would have to make all your different regional departments (Latin America, Europe, USA etc) be in sync in terms of availablity of parts and products so that they can be shipped and computers can be fixed properly. All this differences obviously makes costumers feel alienated (my self included) and end up not being happy with what they get (if they buy a computer) because usually the differences mean you are getting a far worse product than whats available in the US.

I think DELL should standardize their sites so that ALL OF THEM or offer the same products and same upgradabilities. ATLEAST MOST OF THEM for I can imagine underdeveloped countries would not serve as big markets for top end gaming products for example. But, there really isnt an excuse to have differences in terms of product availabilities between say the UK and the US, and other developed countries like Canada, many european countries, Puerto Rico, and Latin American countries like Mexico, Chile and Argentina (for example). Why have differences? If the reason is so that you can sell off any remainding older products, then why not make a section where older products are sold for a bit cheaper? I am sure there are MANY people who would not mind buying older products if they were made a bit cheaper. If its a problem of having so many products all over the place simply waiting to be purchased, then make it so that these countries have a to wait a bit more for their products to arrive while DELL sends the products to the DELL people station in that country. I can assure you many would not mind having to wait a week more if they are able to buy say a M2010 that is currently not offered to them.
The dell costumer would have a lot more freedom in terms of moving to another country and not worrying that the computer they bought is not offered by say the Latin American department of Dell and thus they do not carry parts to fix his computer. This is something that is obviously asked by many as we can see from the numerable ideas posted here asking for products to be offered in X country:

Driver Storage - Built-In

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by leolonewolf_nw08 Apr 2

How many times have you lost the driver disc for some errant piece of hardware? Or can't seem to find the website to download the driver from? Or can't even get on the internet becuase your system has crashed and you have no other computer available?

The Solution: A onboard (motherboard) compact flash slot that is completely internal from the chassis (physcially accessible only by opening the case) that allows you to store and access a compact flash card, your choice of size, and be able to replace it if need be. This flash drive would act not only as a storage location for drivers, which can be preloaded from the factory, but also updated by the dell update software or the user if non-dell parts are added to the system.

Additionally it could also be designed to create a bootable portion for the computer in the event of a HDD failure.

You could even take this as far as adding a second slot that would allow for encrypted file storage, being that they would have to be small files and not excessive in quantity. 23 Comments »

approval ratings on ideas

IdeaStorm submitted by jdelidc Apr 2

kinda like the real voting. you got the total number of people that vote (x10), but you should also have the percent of people that vote up and idea. so you would get someting like a 60% approval rating on something if 6 people voted for an idea and 4 people voted against an idea 5 Comments »

Dell: join in! Offer a low-cost Linux PC!

Linux, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by phubert Apr 2

It appears Dell remains afraid of Microsoft... and here is an answer we haven't heard from Dell on IdeaStorm:

"The top PC makers have so far treaded carefully. Dell's website sells Ubuntu computers in a separate section for open-source PCs, out of direct comparison with Windows machines. Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden said the placement reflects the fact that Linux is still not a mainstream consumer product."

From the USA Today article:

Burst of low-end PCs could boost Linux

"Business computing suppliers are finding open-source desktops especially gaining traction in cost-conscious developing markets. For example, IBM and Linux vendor Red Hat recently launched Microsoft-free desktops for Eastern Europe.

One buyer is Aleksandar Spagnut, a director of Moscow-based Rushotel, which needed new desktop PCs for a hotel-building project. Spagnut said his company saved 30 to 35% over comparable Windows machines. He added that Linux PCs are now common enough that a snowball effect is emerging, whereby technical support and "drivers" — which essentially tell programs how to interact with hardware — are much easier to find." ****

More sales like this Dell: $842 off the Precision M90 notebook PC!

Sales Strategies, Precision Workstations submitted by winoffice Apr 3

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&o...

The Precision M90 is available at $1,249, after an $842 discount. I think that Dell should offer more discounts like these on more notebooks, as well as desktops and servers. 2 Comments »

Custimizing home computers

Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by karlgo Apr 3

I was very disapointed to read the article from Dell upper management saying they will move away from customizing computers. That is the very reason I switched to Dell! It must be time to move on because when it comes down to it, they all make PCs about the same don't they. I can't tell enough how that is a bad idea. Everyone is panicing because of a temporary slow-down in our economy. Dell is panicing. They do this and Dell will drive so many customers right in the arms of HP. Dell is making a huge mistake in competing with HP...Dell blinked. 17 Comments »

Upgradeable Graphics cards for discrete notebooks at dell parts and assesories store

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by ward733 Apr 5

Nvidia has designed a pci express platform verry much like the desktop platform and it is existant in say vostro 1700 (8600m gt) where you have a standard platform.. One card fits all.. To that knowledge the 8800m should work just as the 8600m and as the 8700m . Not like when you wanted to take a video card from an inspiron 8600 and put it in a inspiron 5150 they would not work..two totally differant designs.. This is why we have only seen nvidia cards in the latest systems because ati hasnt conformed to that platform.. So just like the desktop line of cards the notebook graphics cards should be available for an upgrade option..With the option to pay for a tech to change them out, like the repair depot that dell has normally locally within the state..To protect dells interests if you opt for your own removal, then the components envolved in the upgrade should be enalled from warantee much like there parts only dispatch.. Sli video on medium grade notebooks and desktops

Desktops and Laptops submitted by ward733 Apr 5

Sli video again ,is available in select xps models.. I think that if there was the option for sli but with lower end cards say dual or buy the system with one card and have the option to uprade to 2x 8600 cards that there would be a good market for this. This is what is keeping the build it yourself maket open because except for the break the bank xps systems there is not an option for sli..Sli isnt fresh technology and has been out for a while.. leave the quad sli for the xps for a while until the newest technology comes out.. There are dual core cards that kind of take the place of sli but it doesnt carry the same weight.. Comment »

More Customization Options for XPS Sysytems

Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by bundy88 Apr 8

I have been a Dell customer for about eight year's now and have recently visited their website to possibly purchase an XPS 630, me being a game enthusiast and all. It looked like a well put together system and I know Dell build's very good computer's haveing owned a Demension 4600 for seven year's with little to no problems. Upon checking out the customization options for the system I realized they were lacking certain item's that would appeal to gamer's such as a motherboard selection, cpu fans and heatsinks, power supplies, more processor selections like the new q9300 quad, and other name brand memory like Corsair xms2, and Muskin xp2 extrme then just Dominator as the only memory with a heatsink. Also Nvidia has there new 9 series of video cards out on the market, I don't know why Dell wouldn't be offering them instead of the soon to be outdated 8 series.

Another area I fell I should cover before I wrap things up is the case itself. Dont get me wrong its very sharp and sexy I was just hoping for maybe a side window option that maybe wont cost an extra $200 like the 630's big brother the 720, come on Dell thats alittle ridiculous dont you think. Also you should have the option to add extra fans to the case if the buyer deemed necessary.

In conclusion people love having options to choose from and in the case of spending anywhere from $1,500 to alittle over $5,000 for a good gaming computer we want more choices than God himself. 2 Comments »

Offer 1920x1200 on all of your 17"+ desktop monitors!

Desktops, Monitors and Displays, Laptops submitted by winoffice Apr 8

Dell offers a 1920x1200 screen resolution on its 17" and even 15.4" notebook displays (the Vostro 1700 is a 17" notebook and it offers 1920x1200; the Precision M4300 is a 15.4" notebook and it offers 1920x1200).

And yet for some reason Dell offers only a 1440x900 screen resolution on its 17" desktop displays (they offer 1920x1200 only on the monitors that measure 24" or greater).

So Dell thinks that desktop users have less vision than notebook users? Or Dell thinks that I sit close to my notebooks, but not to desktop monitors? I can tell you that the answer to both of the previous questions is no! I use both desktops and notebooks and of course my vision is the same, no matter which of those I might be using at a given instant. And I sit close BOTH to notebooks AND to desktop monitors.

If Dell can offer 1920x1200 on its 17" notebook displays, then they can definitely do the same for 17" desktop displays.

So offer 1920x1200 on all of your desktop monitors that measure 17" or greater.

Now before you anti-1920x1200 people demote this, note that I said "offer" so it would only be an option, and you could always opt out.

And yes, this is a duplicate, a duplicate of my own post even. But I want to buy a 17" Dell monitor, and without 1920x1200, it becomes difficult. 3 Comments »

Stop Making Canadian Purchases 20% More Expensive Than US

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by canadaboy Apr 9

I just did the pricing of a Inspiron 1720 on the US and Canadian versions of the web (www.dell.com, www.dell.ca)

The price for the exact same models and warranty (3 year complete care, onsite):

US: $2331
CND: $2767

Difference: 18.7%, $436 Difference

This is not unusual, and it's actually grown very negative in my approach to Dell as a Canadian customer (and I love Dell). It's hard to understand why the cost difference exists as it does.

Now, I understand that each country is tweaked for it's own buying habits (example, the US site starts with a warrenty push, and the options are presented slightly differenty than the Canadian site), and I assume that it's to maximize country based biases into better margins. That's cool (really), upselling through options and the way they are presented is really cool.

But when pricing out the same products, the prices should be in line. Otherwise, just get the feeling the Dell is really a big US company which doesn't care about other country markets. 8 Comments »

Allow operating system CHOICE

Linux, Operating Systems, Sales Strategies submitted by rahbm Apr 9

Please make the operating system a priced option on EVERY PC, so that people know how much they are paying, and for what.

This will allow Ubuntu users to buy any system, as opposed to the limited range now, increasing sales.

This will not disadvantage Windows purchasers; they can simply tick the box for XP or Vista, and have a choice not available now.

This will also open up sales to those who want NO operating system, so that they can load their own. So far I have always bought 'white-box' PCs, but would like the ability to buy a real brand-name PC with support and warranty.

Simplified ordering (just pick the PC), with more potential customers!

Thank you for your consideration. 2 Comments »

Sell XP PC's at a discount

Operating Systems submitted by halvorwh 02/20/07

Explain to your customers why a Dell desktop with XP Pro operating system costs the same (or more) than one with the equivalent Vista operating system? How is this possible.? Surely the new Vista operating system with all of its development costs must be more costly than XP? It appears that you (and M$) are charging the same for XP and Vista? Explain this to us -- oh, don't bother, we know why XP is not available at a discount. No one would pay $300 to buy XP service pack 3 (commonly called Vista). Comment »

Ban Vista DRM hardware

Operating Systems submitted by swa 02/24/07

Please ban all Vista certified DRM capable hardware.

The spread of such hardware that cannot have it's specs public nor source code public means that Microsft wins the true opensource battle and all we'll be left with are binary driver blobs for a few non Microsoft OSes. 2 Comments »

Dell Vostro 1700 with Windows XP OS

Operating Systems, Vostro products submitted by icpeanuts 09/05/07 **REVIEWED**

I love the Vostro 1700 and would want to buy it. One huge problem. This is a Small Business Laptop, why is the option for Windows XP Professional OS not available. I am sure there are other users out there that keeping WINDOWS XP as the OS choice is a MUST. Why not just offer it as an option, why make it so difficult for users to hunt down the drivers for the various hardware.

More Windows XP Support . . .

Operating Systems, XPS products submitted by ahtistudios 04/23/07

I read on the Ideastorm homepage today about Dell finally agreeing to package Windows XP with more of their systems, in response to the posts here requesting such an action. As an audio professional and computer enthusiast very familiar with Microsoft's continued pattern of releasing operating systems before the bugs are worked out, I'm happy to see this. I'm actually in the market for a new desktop right now, and can't use Vista, as many of my hardware pieces and software programs don't work with it. I'd like to buy an XPS410, but after having spoken with two Dell sales reps at different times (one before Dell's announcement to have increased XP support, and one today), I've found that the only XPS system to come with XP is the 710. I don't need the advanced cooling system or graphic cards of the 710. I just need a Dual Core desktop, priced competitively, running at an optimal speed (the 410 is the only one that fits my needs, without adding extra stuff I don't need). If Dell can add XP to their Dimensions, why not the XPS series in full? 1 Comment »
