Universal Notebook Power Adapter

Laptops, Laptop Power submitted by slateslate 08/24/07

1. I've owned Dell Latitudes and Inspirons since 1998.
2. Your power adapters have a life expectancy of 12-18 months under daily mobile use. It is annoying for have these adapters fray.
3. Subsequent generations of notebooks each have unique adapters. Make all adapters the same after this generation of notebooks. So that should one power adapter fray, I can swap with another Dell adapter even if it's from a different notebook model.

OR

1. MAKE YOUR POWER ADAPTERS LESS PRONE TO FRAY AT THE END WHERE THE ADAPTER MEETS THE COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4 Comments »

simple OS

Operating Systems submitted by cheetak 08/21/07

Most of the people on this planet have no clue about English as a language.
But even the most illiterate village people can use a cell phone.
Only because humans are good at understanding and remembering images.
A simple OS would allow people to use a PC like a cell phone based mostly on symbols. Most OSs' have a good looking GUI but very complex to browse.
If there would be GUI's within a OS for desktops ranging from basic to advanced.
This way even a person who never heard a word of any foreign language can use it.
If chimps could remember symbols and dolphins could beg for food, humans could do better. 3 Comments »

Automatic Dell driver & software update (maybe even bios?)

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Dell Web Site submitted by prijswij 02/21/07

Like windows and Adobe e.t.c. it would be nice to have dell automaticly update drivers and software instead of me surfing to the dell site to find new updates. 11 Comments »

Add 802.11n wireless option for your Linux offerings.

Linux submitted by jmxz 08/15/07

I can't find any of your Linux offerings with a 802.11n offering. Seems most 802.11n chipsets have pretty weak driver support right now; but fundamentally 802.11n does work with Linux (heck, Cisco 802.11n devices are even linux based). Adding 802.11n as an option along - even in a partially working state with a disclaimer that drivers are not stable - would help some linux customers including (a) those people who don't mind helping debugging the driver, and (b) those people willing to use wired networking until the drivers get more mature.

Also, of course Dell could tell the vendors to provide a working driver as Michael Dell himself suggested
http://www.techweb.com/wire/story/TWB20000815S0014

"One of the big challenges has been the driver world," Dell said. "Chipset companies and peripheral companies need to develop for Linux. Dell can be a powerful ally. We can say, 'if you want to work for Dell give us drivers with support for Linux.'

Dell - please stay focused on the highest-voted ideas, though. Don't distract yourselves with this one until you've addressed the ideas below which have been the top-ranked ideas for at least 6 months without adequate responses..
  1. 147,808 - dhart - Pre-Installed Linux [and not just on a couple obsolete models in limited geographies]
  2. 127,719 - dhart - Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
  3. 107,313 - robinjfisher - Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
  4. 89,183 - ootleman - No Extra Software Option [only a couple models are crapware-free today]
  5. 78,007 - gergnz - Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware
  6. 73,600 - agreer - No OS Preloaded [and not just on a couple obsolete models]

Internationalisation of Ideastorm

IdeaStorm submitted by premcv 07/26/07

We have seen over the past few months there have been quite a few posts requesting and also posting ideas in different languages.

These people would have genuine ideas to put forth and should not be prevented or required to have a translator to help them.

I propose that Dell should create Internatinalised versions of Ideastorm, and create links to these Internationalised versions on the Ideastorm home page.

To go one better implement a feature which, if anybody posts an Idea say, for example, in Spanish here in the English version, then it should be automatically translated and inserted as an idea. And the person who posted the idea in Spanish should be redirected to the Spanish version of Ideastorm and their idea posted there. Thus catering to various International cultures and languages. 16 Comments »

Dell Include a Ubuntu CD with every purchase of a Non-Ubuntu OS System for every System you sell.

Dell, Operating Systems, Software submitted by jorge 08/14/07

Dell Include a Ubuntu CD with every purchase of a Non-Ubuntu OS System for every System you sell.

Your other non-Ubuntu OS offerings are hurting due to viruses, Trojans, e-mail bombs, worms, random system errors, un-reproducible memory handling errors, the list goes on. Offering them a second option once they experience the pain and agony is the best thing Dell can do.

Show your customers you care and provide them with a Ubuntu OS install CD (which can run in Live mode as well). 15 Comments »

Change the CPU Heatsink Assembly in the Inspiron 1520 from Copper/Aluminum to All Copper

Inspiron products submitted by bsamm97 08/10/07

This really should be a no brainer. The small CPU heatsink assembly in the Inspiron 1520 should be all copper. Right now, you have a copper heat pipe leading to an aluminum heatsink. The 8600m GT heatsink assembly in the 1520 is all copper, why not the CPU as well? An all copper heatsink assembly would allow the laptop to run quieter. 1 Comment »

Love the new XPS M1330 but need more video power

XPS products submitted by md-cyqb 08/11/07

M1330 is really the way to go for a laptop, it's perferct in term of size and design. But it really need better video option. The video card is just not enough powerfull to meet today multimedia requirement. 256m video card is a must on XPS system as they are advertised as ultimate multimedia notebook.

256m M8600 gs or gt for m1330 that would be great.
Better screen resolution also and matte finish

And if not possible for the M1330 due to it size, why not offering a mid range XPS with 14" or 15" screen but still light and small like M1330 but with really better video option. 9 Comments »

Please promote so that Dell knows that people want the new Intel processors!

XPS products submitted by nick7 08/10/07

For almost three weeks now I have constantly been going dell.com and searching the internet for news on the e6850. I am going away to school soon and I need to get a computer in the next two weeks, but at this rate Dell won't offer the E6850 for another month. I know that this is not an idea but please, if you have any sympathy, promote this so that Dell will see that people really want the E6850 among the other new Intel processors. 1 Comment »

Offer a notebook that is all black in color.

Laptops submitted by jervis961 08/10/07

Not the shiny black that collects dust and fingerprints like crazy but a matte black. No paint either use colored plastic or a rubber coating so it won't rub off. Now add a blacklight to illuminate the white letters on the keyboard in the dark. Make it thin like the XPS M1330 with a LED backlit high resolution matte screen that is transreflective. 12 Comments »

1520N and 1720N

Inspiron products, Linux submitted by benjesuit 08/10/07

What does the "N" stand for anyway? Nemesis? Non-restrictive?

Anyway, I have an idea why Dell chose not to sell pre-installed Ubuntu on the 1520/1720.

That said, why not set aside 500 units of each and see how fast they sell out with Ubuntu preinstalled. What is more, on the website have a real time "quantity on hand" indication like you do in the refurb site. Might be a fine way to build excitement.

Imagine the news headlines and blog chatter;

"Dell's selling Ubuntu notebooks like hot cakes."
"Dell sells 100 1520N's in 24 hrs."
"Dell's Ubuntu notebooks 1520N and 1720N sold out in first 2 weeks of debut."

Free advertizing.

Give it a shot Dell.

Oh and make at least one Vostro notebook available for Ubuntu pre-install. That all black theme is sharpish. 22 Comments »

Stackable PC--easy to upgrade

Desktops submitted by av1945 08/10/07

How about a PC that is made up of different sessions that place on top of each the (like bricks). The base section would contain the CPU, GPU and SPU. The next one could contain the HDD and the next could contain a disc drive and so on. If the user wanted to upgrade their HDD, al they have to do is buy a new 'block' and clip it in place! 9 Comments »

National Call Centers [and other Service Improvement Ideas]

Service and Support submitted by henrieb 02/17/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

As a corporate customer I like Dell's products and my USA customer support. I have read the web about all the people that have had problems with Dell customer service and mine and others are not isolated incidences. If you want people to be loyal take a hint from the corporate sales and give Home users even a little customer support. My corporate help does not read scripts, they have the power to take ownership and fix the problem. Granted I do buy Gold support. If Dell thinks it saves money for bad support; I have personally talked 20 or 30 people out of buying a Dell.

* Addition: After reading several of the comments on this topic it appears that what we really want is someone in customer support that will listen to us, and hopefully help us. Culture and language barriers just make this harder. Maybe a better way to track customer performance would be to find out if they really helped someone and not how fast they can end the call. Dell management needs to start taking ownership of this problem. Maybe Dell management needs to start calling Dell support with fake problems and see it the system they created can help them, it sure does not work for us.

Add all the OS's you sell to the "Help Me Choose: Operating System" page

Dell Web Site, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/08/07

These pages: titled "Help Me Choose: Operating System" (a Dell help me choose page, another one)
only list some of the operating systems Dell sells.

I assume you also recommend Ubuntu for some home users (those who want better security and performance, I imagine) and FreeDOS for business (since that's what you sell on your Latitudes - even though I can't imagine why you prefer FreeDOS there over Ubuntu). But unless you put them in those pages, we can't easily make an informed choice. 15 Comments »

12.1" Inspiron

Inspiron products submitted by migizi 07/24/07

I think there should be a 12.1" Inspiron notebook. I have a 700m and my wife has an XPS 1210. I want to see another upgrade to the 12.1" line. If I could get 12.1" with a dedicated graphics card and the color options of the Inspiron line I will upgrade my system. Offer it with the LED back light as well this will make it an excellent ultra portal laptop. The ability to get 5 hours of battery life with normal tasks and about 3 playing games is great. Dell needs ultra portal laptops that are not part of the XPS line, cheap, good quality Inspiron is the way to go. Not everyone wants a 6lbs laptop or large screen. I would like to have the option of an AMD processor. 4 Comments »

Make A Wireless Dell

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**

Apple has a real, valid point: Too many cables in a typical PC setup.

I think Dell could make a combo cable, or a unified display (display/camera/stereo speakers).

Dell should work on a nice clean design - like Apple's clean design - less cable rat nests, more computing power. 220 Comments »

DELL Idea Storm Team - Each idea should be responded to.

IdeaStorm submitted by stormrider451 Mar 4

Hello there.. I realize this might have been posted before. But, it obviously has not worked to this point. So here it is.

I think the DELL IdeaStorm Team should try their best to reply to EVERY idea regardless of how unrealistic that idea is; not just most popular ideas. I can understand not posting to negative ideas or ideas that simply have been posted to screw around. Every positive idea should be commented on. Its not that hard to have someone go over every idea that has been posted in a day and write some sort of small message. It doesnt take much, just a simple message saying for example: "sorry but I think this idea is not going to happen soon". Or "sorry but we do not find this idea possible". Its simple things that really make the poster know that they are being heard at least. Many of us are here because we like DELL so much we would like to give them a hand with ideas that we might come up with. Of course, some ideas will be regarding things people want on a certain product they want to buy, but I think thats fine too. Take for example my case, I have three ideas so far posted and only one has been answered:

1) Answered: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10076698/XPS_One__More_Video_Power_on_X...
2) Not Answered: http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10077288/XPS_One__Unecessary_Adobe_Elem... **
3) Not Answered:
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/10077717/Dell_Ink_and_Printers__Sell_th... ***

If you go look at the one that is answered, you will see an example of what I am asking for, you can see there how the idea was answered swiftly and at least it gives me some sort of reply. Comments like these is what I am looking for. Not getting ideas answered makes me really not want to post anything else because I feel I am loosing my time trying to figure cool things that could help my favorite computer company. Dell, if you have this idea storm, lets do it the right way. Make your costumers feel welcomed and that they should keep trying. Is that so much to ask? I mean, I go over each idea posted every day in less than 10 min. Its doable.

Thanks! 36 Comments »
