Always include all software and driver reinstallation discs for free (or at least let us get the option to)... don't make us pay extra

Software submitted by winoffice 05/01/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

Always include ALL software AND driver reinstallation discs for FREE (or at let us get the option do get the for free if we want as follows)...don't make us pay extra in case that we have a disaster and need to reinstall from scratch...!

No Discs Included (Included In Price)

All Discs Included (this means everything -- all software discs -- OS/Security software/etc., and all driver discs -- this means Windows or Linux drivers or both, whatever applies -- add $0)

Other options (OS disc only, all software discs only, driver discs only, etc. -- add $0)

For some computers, Dell does not include the reinstallation discs. Even if Dell offers them, Dell charges extra for us to get them. In fact, the only time I seen reinstallation discs being offered without charge were for Dell XPS desktops with the flashy lights -- that is, the Dell XPS 600, 700, and 710 systems, for those ware the only systems to offer operating system options like "Microsoft Windows XP Media Center WITH REINSTALLATION CD".

Also, most of the time when software reinstallation discs are not included, driver reinstallation discs (such as XPS flashy lights, as well as printers and monitors) are not included either. Therefore, don't just include the software reinstallation discs -- include as well the Windows/Linux drivers for the hardware (depending on the OS purchased with the computer, if any, which in turn depends on the user's preferences).

Besides, Microsoft as well as ALL software companies include the discs when you get the software seperately, so why can't Dell do the same when the software is preinstalled...?
Customers no longer have to pay extra for re-installation media.

Make color of the XPS cases optional for the customer.

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by maverick4ever 08/01/07

I think it would be a good move of Dell to give the customer the option of choosing the color of his/her PC's color. Personally, I don't care for the current red and silver case of the XPS 710, but I would like to have the 1kilowatt powersupply and other advantages. Meanwhile it seems like at this moment the black XPS case, which I preferred a lot more, isn't even being offered. Like with Alienware, give the customers options with the color of their PC's cases. 5 Comments »

Make Prices Reasonable and Allow All Possible Configurations for All Dell Machines!

Advertising and Marketing, Sales Strategies, XPS products submitted by perfectcode 08/02/07

4 days ago the XPS 720 was around $2,900 dollars. Yesterday it was at $3,000 or so with the Sound Blaster® X-Fi™ XtremeGamer (D) Sound Card standard, but Dell changed the price of the 2GB Corsair Dominator ram to $270 instead of the $100 which it was at.

Now the price of the red (they added the black XPS 710 to the XPS 720 selection and you are extremely limited to the configurations of that one) XPS 720 is at $3,299 with the same features as when it was priced at!!! I was going to buy it 4 days ago but didnt have time due to one of my family members health issue and now this happens... great... as if things can't get any worse. =/

I also dislike how limited you are when customizing a Dell computer and how inflated the prices can be sometimes. They always start you (by default) with the lowest priced configuration and then everything else that can be added costs more money. Let's say there is a 320GB HDD at 10,000RPMs, well what if I want the 160GB because 320GB is too much? Let's say it starts me out with a Single Drive: 16X CD/DVD drive, well what if I want a Blu-ray or HD-DVD drive instead? There is no options for things like that. : (

Well that's just my two cents.

Stop lying.

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 08/02/07

You just sent me another dead-tree-catalog full of "Dell Recommends Vista" on most pages; and practically everywhere I go on your web site I see it.

Yet the press reports that you guys are smart enough to hold off on deploying it yourselves no matter how strongly you "recommend" it to others.

Intel, Dell hold off on internal rollout of Vista
...
Dell has also not yet rolled out Vista internally, ..."We are pretty much in the same position as Intel within Dell," he said Thursday. "We knew we would roll out Vista internally faster than any other OS (but) if we are at the SP1 level it is going to be safer."
Please change your
"Dell Recommends Vista"
lies with
"Dell recommends holding off like we're doing internally".
on both your website and send print corrections to customers you lied with in print.

Dell - please stay focused on the highest-voted ideas, though. Don't distract yourselves with this one until you've addressed the ideas below which have been the top-ranked ideas for at least 6 months without adequate responses..

  1. 147,808 - dhart - Pre-Installed Linux [and not just on a couple obsolete models in limited geographies]
  2. 127,719 - dhart - Pre-Installed OpenOffice | alternative to MS Works & MS Office
  3. 107,313 - robinjfisher - Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser
  4. 89,183 - ootleman - No Extra Software Option [only a couple models are crapware-free today]
  5. 78,007 - gergnz - Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware
  6. 73,600 - agreer - No OS Preloaded [and not just on a couple obsolete models]

Unleash the full potential of Linux's multi-user capabilities: Ubuntu + Ndiyo's Hubster

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Desktops and Laptops submitted by limulus 08/02/07

When you think of a Windows machine, generally speaking, its a box connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse, which one user uses at a time. Dell's Desktop Ubuntu machines are currently shipped the same way.

But Ubuntu is Linux and so has the potential for many users to use the same computer at the same time, as is done with a server.

Imagine if you will being able to buy a single computer and everyone in the house can use it at the same time; no more fighting over who gets to use it when or who gets stuck using the old computer if there is another one. This is the exciting potential of Ndiyo's Hubster.

"Hubster is the first ultra-thin-client terminal with completely user-configurable hardware"

* plug a USB hub into your computer
* plug the Hubster, a USB keyboard and mouse into the hub
* plug a monitor into the Hubster

and you have a Terminal that behaves just as if it were its own computer. Repeat the process for a second Terminal, etc.

Some new monitors will even have the hub built right in to make it that much easier.

Watch the demo video on their page and be as awe-struck as I was :-)

AFAIK, there is nothing currently like this offered by any major OEM; if Dell were to get it to market I'm sure many families would want one! 18 Comments »

nvidia 8700m in Inspirons

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Gaming, Inspiron products submitted by real_df 08/03/07

Dell should have the option of putting an Nvidia 8700m w/ 512MB VRAM into the inspirons. the 8700m is the same hardware as the 8600m just overclocked a bit and with more memory so there shouldnt be an issue with fitting it into the chassis. if battery power is the issue... then idk. ive never gamed on my laptop without first plugging it in.

or at least give Inspiron purchasers the option of a 512 video card. 1 Comment »

Stop advertising on the O'Reilly Factor.

Advertising and Marketing submitted by rengeln 08/03/07

We believe that Dell should immidiately cease all advertising on The O'Reilly Factor, a program which is responsible for an unending stream of vitriol and intolerance. Bill O'Reilly is a liar, a bigot, a pervert, and a creep, and by advertising on his program, Dell Computer is giving the lunatic a soapbox from which to scream his message of hate and fear. We do not believe that Dell Computer endorses his views, but nonetheless, your money helps keep him on the air. As Dell customers, we are repulsed at the idea of our funds eventually being channeled into O'Reilly's pockets. We request that you follow the recent example of Lowe's and Home Depot and cut all ties with The O'Reilly Factor and Fox News. 4 Comments »

Dell coporation should pay some insurance company to cover possible payment fraud

Service and Support submitted by marvelkkk 08/04/07

DELL (at least in Europe/France) is asking for a "proof" of delivery address even once the credit card payment has been fully accepted by the bank system:

That is to sent by "fax" of "post" a home electricity bill !

1) It means the online payment isn't trusted
2) It goes against the basic principles of Dell business model (that is suppose to be online).
3) It stops sales. Customers don't want to deal with a unpleaseant and old-fashionned procedure.

If the web isn"t trusted, it should be easy to find an insurance company that would cover in case of problem. Comment »

Smaller Mini Keyboard Option

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops submitted by desertc 08/04/07

Give option for smaller mini keyboards. Many people never use their Keypad, yet everyone must move their hand over that five inches every time they go between the mouse and typing. This takes up desk space, it may increase RSI risk, and it prevents the user from leaving the keyboard in the lap. Typing with the keyboard in one's lap is the most ergonomic way because our arms naturally fall there when sitting. Yet, when typing from one's lap, the keyboard is off-balance because of the keypad when the right hand operates the mouse.

There are after-market keyboards available, but they cost $50-$100, a price that most are not willing to spend on a keyboard. Should Dell provide smaller mini keyboards for users, then people will have an easier time working on their computers. 2 Comments »

Stop painting notebooks!!!

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), XPS products submitted by jervis961 08/05/07

Since Dell is having such issues with the XPS M1330 because of paint issues and the fact that so many people have had their paint wear off on a Dell notebook, they should find a new way to color their products. They could switch to colored plastic, use more metal products, dyed rubber coatings or find another method. 21 Comments »

Add all the OS's you sell to the "Help Me Choose: Operating System" page

Dell Web Site, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/08/07

These pages: titled "Help Me Choose: Operating System" (a Dell help me choose page, another one)
only list some of the operating systems Dell sells.

I assume you also recommend Ubuntu for some home users (those who want better security and performance, I imagine) and FreeDOS for business (since that's what you sell on your Latitudes - even though I can't imagine why you prefer FreeDOS there over Ubuntu). But unless you put them in those pages, we can't easily make an informed choice. 15 Comments »

Make Dell Ubuntu PCs available to businesses and non-profits

Linux, Sales Strategies, Small Business submitted by wyleyr 06/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**

Dell is apparently not yet willing to sell Ubuntu-based PCs to business users, non-profits, or other organizations larger than a "home office." See this Ubuntu forum thread for more:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=478975

If Dell is serious about offering "choice" to consumers -- the main reason that they're offering up Ubuntu -- they ought to offer it to all their customers, including commercial and non-profit organizations.

Perhaps the greatest barrier here is that these other customers often require different support contracts than home users. It wouldn't be necessary to offer the same support options to organizations that purchase Ubuntu PCs as are offered to home users, or to organizations that purchase Windows PCs. (Perhaps Dell doesn't need to offer any support at all, except for hardware; as long as Canonical can support these organizations.) But they ought to at least have the option of buying the boxes, even if they have to get support in a different way.

Visible Link to IdeaStorm on main Dell site

Advertising and Marketing, Dell Web Site, IdeaStorm submitted by ipaw 07/01/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

IdeaStorm should have a visible link and explanation on the main Dell site as well as a Desktop shortcut on all new installations.

I've been a Dell customer since my XPS-500 back in the mid 90's and I only just found out about IdeaStorm through a PodCast.

If people know they can have a voice and make a difference, they'll use it.

Thanks

This idea has been partially implemented, as our new home page now has a prominent link to "Dell Community" - within that page are links to IdeaStorm and our other community properties, including Dell Community Forums, Direct2Dell, StudioDell, etc. Thanks for the idea!!!
