Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Monitors and Displays submitted by reg 08/07/07 **COMING SOON**
Software submitted by estherscott 06/20/07 **ALREADY OFFERED** It would be helpful to have pre-installed or available through Dell, a backup program. One of the major failures of most home users is to do regular backups. Having this available pre-installed may encourage people, such as myself, to do regular backups. It would need to do a full system backup, as well as specific areas (like MyDocuments and MyPictures). Even a "recent changes" option would be good. I have tried two programs on my own, and they don't work with the hardware I have available. Knowing that I had a backup program available that would work at a reasonable cost (say two or three CDs - not 20) would be great. 26 Comments » Small, cheap laptops without all the expensive features Sales Strategies, Laptops submitted by bjomape 08/09/07
I noted that one of your competitors is launching a small lightweight laptop with a crappy 7" screen and a tiny flash based disk (4-8GB), running a Linux version adapted for beginners (but still containing tools for linux pros). The interesting point is that you get a small and light laptop for less than $200. Despite the poor specifications, I'm extremely tempted to get one - it would be a perfect complement for my Inspiron when I travel (or actually just for work - it's photography, movie watching, gaming, and other leisure applications that require more performance). Monitors and Displays submitted by drew08867 06/28/07 Dell should transition all monitors to LED back lighting. More cost effective (in terms of energy use), greener, longer life. 11 Comments » Dell's Website must work with Firefox running on Linux Dell Web Site, Linux submitted by qgonjon 07/16/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
It's discouraging to have a Tier 1 vendor (Dell) selling Linux products and yet not really tailoring to Linux. Don't get me wrong Dell, I am not trying to take away all the good you have done. Offering Linux is a step in the right direction and I would like to see more steps taken in a monthly or quarterly basis. But, it seems that the basis for your current Linux promotion is for the Open Source enthusiast like me. I use Linux at home and at work as my main operating system. I use Firefox as my browser and I'm trying to order a Dell Inspiron 1420N. However, it seems that the embedded flash script that shows the different colors choices for the Inspiron is not working under Linux. It also shows that I can't see the different images thereafter. It works with Windows running Firefox as my vmware machine verified. But that is not the type of user that will most likely purchase a Linux laptop. Before I buy, I would like to have the options of downloading the full technical specifications of the system. Not just the brief specifications. Place a link under "tech specs" tab that allows you to view or download the full specification PDF file for those of us who care about and understand such things. This way everyone is satisfied. I find myself many, many times in dark or poorly lit environments having to guess the various keys - would be fantastic to have a backlit keyboard - with backlit individual keys as the best option. Sell Ubuntu Systems to Businesses Linux, Sales Strategies, Small Business submitted by defrex 06/20/07
Recently Dell refused to sell their Ubuntu PCs to a small non-profit business. Please do sell them in future, letting the market for the Ubuntu PCs expand however it chooses. Explain why you made Windows cheaper than Ubuntu again for the same hardware Linux submitted by jmxz 07/07/07
Dell, you labeled the idea "Implemented: Ubuntu Dell is $50 Less Than Windows Dell" as "Implemented" Just did my own 1420 vs 1420N comparison. The Windows machine comes with a free upgrade to 2GB Memory and 160GB Drive, which each cost more on the Ubuntu machine. Apparently, it's harder to install memory and hard drives on Linux??? Hmmm.. no, not that I recall. Anyway, with all the same options selected between the two machines, the Ubuntu Tax apparently is now running $275. Now I know Ubuntu's a better OS; but c'mon - even I wouldn't pay a $275 premium for Ubuntu over Windows. Or are you trying to kill the Ubuntu sales - and if so, just come out and say that? 14 Comments » Software submitted by ootleman 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Would love the ability to have a clean Vista install. No AOL software, no earthlink software, no google software - just a clean, original OS. Make the dell ubuntu models available through the main webpage Dell Web Site, Linux, Sales Strategies submitted by rajeevbhatta 06/19/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Instead of having the model listings on a different webpage ( www.dell.com/open) have these models available from the product search you have on the main page or a link available through the main page (www.dell.com) Ubuntu on 12.1 or 13.3 inch laptops Linux, Laptops submitted by miceagol 05/31/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**
Preload Ubuntu on your 12.1 (XPS M1210) or 13.3 inch (XPS M1330) laptops. As it is now, there's only one choice for a laptop, and that choice is not a light laptop. The 12.1 inch and 13.3 inch laptops are much better to carry around than heavy 15 inch++ laptops. Add all the OS's you sell to the "Help Me Choose: Operating System" page Dell Web Site, Linux, Operating Systems submitted by jmxz 06/08/07
These pages: titled "Help Me Choose: Operating System" (a Dell help me choose page, another one) Have Firefox pre-installed as default browser Software submitted by robinjfisher 02/19/07 **REVIEWED**
Does what it says on the tin! Most people only use IE because they aren't aware of other browsers - they think Internet Explorer is the Internet! What would really drive take up of alternative browsers is if Firefox was pre-installed as the default browser so that when people look for the "Internet" in Windows, they are using FF. Make Dell Ubuntu PCs available to businesses and non-profits Linux, Sales Strategies, Small Business submitted by wyleyr 06/20/07 **UNDER REVIEW**
Dell is apparently not yet willing to sell Ubuntu-based PCs to business users, non-profits, or other organizations larger than a "home office." See this Ubuntu forum thread for more: track my votes
