We are professionals. We love Linux. We love Dell.
Dell makes some awesome and affordable hardware. Many new Dell machines have the PERC 5/i SAS RAID controller, which is a rebranded LSI MegaRAID SAS.
LSI makes some nice RAID cards. Dell likes LSI. Dell made a deal with LSI to provide the chips for their fancy new PERC 5/i cards.
We buy machines with these cards in them. We need to monitor our RAIDs, rebuild them, and do all manner of other maintenance tasks. We do not expect LSI to provide perfect tools. LSI is a hardware vendor, and it's understandable that they provide terrible *software*. What is NOT understandable, though, is why LSI's terrible tools are closed source.
What is further incomprehensible is why Dell is willing to accept this situation on behalf of their enterprise customers. Has anyone from Dell even tried to use the tools LSI provides, and Dell recommends, to manage a RAID array on Linux?
MegaCli is the worst command-line utility I have ever seen, bar none. But, we don't expect LSI to make it better, we expect LSI to OPEN SOURCE it. That way we software professionals can spend our own time to make them better. We need better tools. We are willing to work for free. Give us the source, or give us good documentation, but give us something.
We're willing to provide infinite amounts of value to both Dell and LSI. Dell has enough clout with LSI to make this happen. Please make it happen.

Website Dedicated to Linux Support for all Dell Model Computers

A website that dedicated to Linux On Dell. Recommendations for xorg.conf file configurations and power management configuration/drivers. It would be great if Dell would dedicate some resources to Linux Support on Dell. When I think of what laptop to buy I think about which Vendor is the most Linux friendly or else what Makes and Model's seem to be working out best for Linux users. Dell laptops seem to have a lot of new powerful hardware that's tough getting Linux to work well on it. For example, the drivers/modules for getting the power management features to work and the Alps/Synaptic drivers and configuration tools is also tricky. The X-windows monitor and graphics card detection and auto-configuration doesn't work well on many Dell Models. Dell has an opportunity to do a lot for the Linux community and in turn the Linux community could do a lot for Dell. I used to have a Dell D600 and now have a Dell 620 and I'm always spending weeks trying to get everything to work properly.

No McAfee

I think everyone agrees here. No McAfee. i cant unistall my copy because it will take all my settings for the Microsoft firewall with it. That includes my outlook settings, internet, and just about every program. Why cant i say "no McAfee please"??? is it really that hard? use Norton....

Dont eliminate XP just yet

Ok, well I know I may be chastised for bringing this up, but vista is still a young operating system with its own problems etc... I would like to see both Home and Business computers, especially notebooks have an XP Home and Pro option on top of Vista until it has at least been out for a year. For those seasoned users like me who just feel that you need to let a new OS mature before jumping right in. I am planning on buying a new notebook, and I would like to insure I wont have to format it on arrival just to have XP.

Add GPS to Notebooks

Start integrating GPS into all Dell Notebooks. This would be a big incentive to buy a Dell because people wouldn't have to buy external GPS devices. This could be an option that is bundled with Microsoft Streets and Trips, or some other GPS software.
Also, you could try addidng support for GPS into anti-theft software to literally track down a theif. Have the laptop report its location whenever it has a connection to the internet after it has been reported stolen.

Silent / Quiet Computers: Sound levels in decibels

I'd like Dell to provide the sound level in decibels for each of their desktops, under max load as well as at idle.
How a manufacturer can produce an expensive computer, and then have the user acoustic experience of that computer dominated by the noise generated by a cheap fan worth just pennies, for the entire lifetime of that computer, is incomprehensible. Computers are noisy when brand new, but those cheap fans begin to rub and oscillate and make additional annoying noises, frequently within a short period of time of purchase.
Personally, the peace and quiet of my personal workspace is very important to me, it's my sanctuary from the world where I can focus and be creative. To have that experience disrupted by cheap fans is sad, especially when slightly more expensive fans and some reasonable design would solve the issue. Another reason why I consider buying an Apple.
If the cost of a better sound design and fans is significant, it could be an extra cost option.
In general, Dell provides noise data of its products in the Environmental Datasheets. Tests are conducted according to ISO standards in a NVLAP accredited acoustics facility. Click here for more details

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!

I have a XP Pro retail copy, will soon buy retail vista, I also like Linux: Make WINDOWS-FREE, and OS-Free an option for more than just expensive business lines.

Provide OpenOffice.org for free pre-installation alongside Microsoft Works and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org is more capable than Microsoft Works, and a serious competitor to Microsoft Office, at a fraction of the cost (it's free!)
OpenOffice.org can open, create, edit and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
Provide as OPTIONS for pre-installation many other high-quality free software programs such as:
