Dell Forums - no Linux/OSS forum

Dell Community submitted by phubert28 04/10/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

The Windows folk here, as well as some OSS folk, have called for a separate forum for Linux/OSS.

Dell FORUMS would be a good place to implement this, if Dell is about to offer machines with Linux pre-installed to the general public.

So.... might we know roughly when we could expect to see a new category under that portal??????

Expectantly,

phubert28 (aka 'the lost' phubert)
There is a Linux forum on the Forums and linux.dell.com.

Sell video card upgrades for older laptops

Service and Support, Laptops submitted by shiningarcanine 05/02/07

In 2001, I purchased a Dell Inspiron 4000 and three years later, I wanted to upgrade its graphics card, but it was not possible to upgrade it. Eventually, I purchased a 16MB graphics card off ebay, which Dell used in some Inspiron 4000 laptops, but it apparently did not upgrade mine due to the motherboard revision.

Now I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 and it has a GeForce 7 Go 7900 GS graphics card. I am not going to buy a new laptop for years, but I would still like to upgrade it as Nvidia comes out with newer mobile graphics solutions, such as the GeForce 8 Go 8800 GS or if I do not upgrade it to Windows Vista, the GeForce 7 Go 7900 GTX when I find the GeForce 7 Go 7900 GS to no longer deliver satisfactory frame rates.

Many enthusiasts who own Dell laptops feel the same way. Dell has probably lost many of them as customers because of this. The only reason I brought a new Dell laptop was because I liked the hardware build quality, but if I do not feel like Dell cares about me and it certainly feels like Dell does not (e.g. all of the junk they load onto their PCs, the recovery partition replacing the Windows and Office CDs, the lack of Dell supported upgrade-ability, etcetera), I might not buy a Dell when I buy another laptop.

Offering hardware upgrades will go a long way in rectifying that, as if I and other enthusiasts perceive that Dell's laptops will be upgradeable in the future, we will buy more of them and then come back as returning customers when we buy new ones. This might change the purchase intervals for a small portion of Dell's customers, but if Dell does this, Dell would have many more customers and many more returning customers as a result. 14 Comments »

Wish list for next gen XPS Gaming Portable

Gaming, XPS products submitted by guardianxps 05/02/07

ok so I have an XPS M1710 and love it.

However I noticed other manufacturers have been getting creative with their high end portables.

So here is my wish for whatever will be the next version of the 1710 XPS

1. Add a number pad PLEASE!!!!
2. Allow the customer to choose the type of keyboards on the system: Black, Silver, or Clear.
3. Backlight the keyboard and touchpad.
4. Allow us to choose a skin of a popular game on the system, preferably on the top and around the keyboard. (the WOW M1710 was cool but didnt cover enough of the system)
5. Add a mic to the portable
6. There are plenty of high end AMD processors, I would ask for a really good one that supports X64.
7. Add thumb print technology to the system somewhere like the Lenovo systems. This is great security technology.
8. Change the chassis to the new system, maybe something really cool instead of what you have now.
9. Hopefully there will be DX10 video cards available for the portables?
10. Move away from Silver chassis systems, its very bland. Maybe all black, or midnight blue, or maybe red?
11. Allow surround sound to be used on the portable. I have a Turtle Beach headset with surround sound. I need another device to make it work, how about add the ports which allow connecting to 5.1 speakers or headset.

Well thats all I can think of right now.

Feel free to add anything else which comes to mind. Hopefully this gets a lot of votes. :) 8 Comments »

Link up with Adobe and create a version of iLife and preinstall

Software submitted by crysalidzzz 05/02/07

Offer Adobe software preinstalled for:
- digital photography
- digital video
- digital vector graphics
- digital music (somthing like GarageBand) - and offer a good keyboard to go with it

I think the Elements software covers *some* of these bases. But with Adobe create an INTEGRATED digital package rather like iLife. (Or a CS3 for the average user).
Then build machines with a suitable spec (esp graphics card) and call them the Dell Adobe Digital World PC. And then offer it at a decent price.

The average user wants to do something with a pc. But sadly, a few of people i've seen are just playing solitaire. Comment »

The DBook: New pro-sumer style for the Latitute D620 and D420

Latitude products submitted by crysalidzzz 05/02/07

The Latitute D620(14 inch screen) and D420(12 inch screen) are imo the jewels in the Dell notebook crown.

So take the basic chassis and technology and create a better external design. Good looking (but quite rugged).

Look a the success of the macbook and VAIO C series. Both are available in different colors, reasonably light and decently priced (though not cheap).

Create a page called "Mobile Student" where these notebooks are prominently displayed. Most students want a notebook which is light enough to carry in a backpack and has a decent keyboard and screen.

Offer the following options:
- Case color
- Glossy or matt screen (alot of people hate the fact the cant get a matt screen with the macbook and vaio C).
- inbuilt camera
- external dvd player for those who want an even lighter (possibly thinner) model
- optional Flash Hardisk.

stop selling hotline help, make it free

Service and Support submitted by arnaudw 05/03/07

stop selling hotline help, making it free :
I have a 4-year old Dimension 4600 with a problem that has never been solved because I used not to care about it. : burning DVDs. Now I do, there is no solution on the database, no solution on forums, and I can't get free help. I bought several PCs from Dell because problems always could be solved. I won't next time because Dell did not help me solve what appears to be a default of their own product. I am sure there must be thousands of other Dell customers in the same situation who abandon Dell because they felt abandonned by Dell. 2 Comments »

stop lying on catalog prices

Dell submitted by arnaudw 05/03/07

I have several times been interested by very aggressively priced offers on paper catalogues (in France and Switzerland), and tried on the internet then called Dell to order : never have I been able to get the product. The phone answer was "I can't find that reference, sorry". I suspect the offer never existed (possibly due to a pricing error) or was limited to so few orders that I never could get one. Such a commercial behavior harms the customer trust in Dell. Comment »

Dell Thin Clients

Servers and Storage submitted by beijaflor 02/19/07

Dell is able to make full PCs for $359.

Imagine what would be the prize of "terminals" for thin client computing ...
- a low-consuming processor at 500-700 Mhz
- no fan design
- on-board 128 Mb flash
- on board 512 Meg RAM
- VESA mountable
- solid state architecture
- PXE bootable

- Remote OS and application :
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/9097
Or even Windows Terminal Server for small deployment if people have the money to pay it.

Thin computing answers to 75% of needs related to computers in school, librairies, hospitals and more ...

Dell could even sell the servers coming with the "thin-clients solutions" ...

I also see the Screen+Keyboard+Mouse option

And think about the network ...

With modern thin-computing solutions, the deployments are made on a larger scale (thousands of terminals across fiber networks) and with thin-clients provided by a large company like Dell, the savings could be on the hardware AND on the software ...

Make Option in the Bios to leave the Media Button LED's On

Inspiron products submitted by rct23 05/03/07

There should be an option in the bios for all current inspiron notebooks which allows the user to set the media button LED's so that they are on all the time and not just when you press them. This would make the buttons much easier to see and functional in the dark. Comment »

Linux vs. Windows option on DELL Laptops

Linux, Software, Laptops submitted by oliver 02/20/07

I've just received my nice DELL Notebook, but had to spend more than an hour to
remove all these 30 days trial crap software, tiscali internet, google bars,
whatsoever...

It would be very nice, if DELL would offer computers just with clean windows and
office. And firefox as the standard browser (instead of internet explorer) and mozilla
thunderbird as the standard mail reader.

Or even better: If DELL also provides Linux Laptops with openOffice, and a choice
option for installing one of the major free linux distributions like eg. free Mandriva and
preconfigured urpmi sources, so that installing additional software works right out
of the box. 6 Comments »

Preinstall linux and offer windows in virtual machine (vmware player or xen)

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by mahei 02/19/07

The first thing i always do is to kick the preinstalled windows of the hard disk, install my favorite flavor of linux and then reinstall windows in a virtual machine for the few tmes i really need it.

Offer that as install option named:
Linux installed with windows in virtual machine

=> this has the side effect for Dell that people order more RAM :) 7 Comments »

ONE SHOPPING CART PLEASE (dell.com)

Dell Web Site submitted by ootleman 02/16/07

Why split it up into 4 different shopping carts (home, small business, etc)? I still don't know how it works. 1/2 my products go into one cart, 1/2 my orders go into the other, possibly depending on where I was browsing from.

And, then, seems like the shopping carts expire after a few hours. After all that time spent configuring, why not keep it around longer.

Matter of fact, why not split the site up at all? If I click on desktops - show me all desktops. Do I, as a small company, need differ computers then a medium business? Please show me everything and let me figure out what works best.

DON'T KILL THE AXIM PDA's platform

Broadband and Mobility submitted by optical10 02/23/07

The world leading x51v WM5 device is only now being bettered by HTC's future "Advantage” PDA / Smartphone matching the Axim 624 MHz power etc 2 years after the party started by Dell's forward thinking product!

Yes it may need to have GPS, EDGE, 3G etc to survive as a Smartphone in this mobile obsessed times but it can be done & the current Axim users will appreciate your efforts into the WM6 platform by buying your products if you reward their loyalty.

Obviously this may be previous if you’re not killing the Axim but most forums think you are so hence this post.

Ron Garriques ex - Motorola were counting on you.

Cheers

ps. For those who require other combi options like say PDA only I request the modarator to open a poll on this topic.

1. PDA only
2. Smartphone
3. PDA + GPS inc
4. Smartphone + GPS

I'm presuming it's a given on the two slots [CF/SD] staying in any of it's incarnations above as we have grown attached to their functionality as is also the case with BT & WiFi. Does much have to change for the Axim x51v to change to bring in inline with the soon to be released crop of WM6 units, I think not if the HTC WM6 units are any thing to go by. Heck the iPhone would also have some way to go to beat my current Axim x51v + Audiovox RTM 8000p voice & data CF card for phone usage. Plus don't get me started on all the add-on projects we at sites like aximsite.com have shared like afarre's X51V & Aximizer as Carputer: http://afarreAximCarputer.notlong.com & the Ratoc.com USB host controller CF card that allows me to use a 169 GB Seagate 2.5" HD portable battery caddy for ALL my media needs at home & on the go & soon a Logitech webcam! 28 Comments »

Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vista™..." from any publication

Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07

It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self.

Somthing linke: "Dell supports muli-OS" would look good! Od: "Dell gives you the real choice" 61 Comments »

A Dell Laptop I can use on my lap! (without being burned)

Laptops submitted by oldsalerogls 02/17/07

I proudly own a 2 year old dell laptop 600m- but it's got heat issues.. who can use their Laptop for 20 minutes before then Laptop begins to get more than warm..and your going to get possibly burned.

Things aren't getting better for new Laptops

Factory Hard Drive and Factory Memory and Processors are running really hot... Noticing it also with other PC Manufacturers (Even with the latest Laptops)

Beat them to the punch...and solve this problem.

Glad to see Michael Dell is Back! 12 Comments »

Full Linux Support

Desktops, Linux submitted by richlake1951 02/20/07

I would love to see Dell sell a fully configured Linux desktop. One similar to the Xandros 4 OS. A multimedia power house loaded with the most popular opens source software, K3b, Amarok, Banshee, Open Office, GIMP, Kaudiocreator, etc. Also I would like the PC itself to be open to all developers, public and private, with full support of Dell and access to the technical knowledge necessary to develop open source drivers and software. 2 Comments »
