Nothing or Linux

Linux, Operating Systems, Software submitted by r0xx 02/21/07

I would like to see systems without any software on it or just Linux. Most of us already own a copy of Microsoft Windows, or are Linux/Other OS users and are forced to buy a new Windows copy everytime you order a new PC.

Thanks for the attention. 1 Comment »

OS choice (Windows and / or Linux)

Operating Systems - Multiboot submitted by mikeweb 02/23/07

A choice for Linux takes down the total price. There must be a choice. No Windows and just Linux or both with a dual boot menu. 1 Comment »

coreboot (formerly LinuxBIOS) instead of proprietary BIOS

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by yesmathew 02/20/07

coreboot (formerly known as LinuxBIOS) is a Free Software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS (firmware) you can find in most of today's computers.
- Fast boot times 3 sec.
- Runs in 32-Bit protected mode almost from the start
- Can boot Windows too...

Offer a Linux Media Center system

Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by jontheisguy 02/21/07

Dear sirs,
The guys at http://store02.prostores.com/servlet/tvease/StoreFront have the right idea and are beginning to get it done!! Bring them in as a partner to boost the Linux offering from Dell. It is a media center pc built on Ubuntu Linux technologies.

PS. Also work out a bulk deal with the owner of digital blasphemy. Offer a 6 mo. subscription with the purchase of any PC over $600 (or whatever your threshold). The membership is golden and provides many wallpaper choices to the new Dell family member.

Thanks.

Windows Vista Business: add $60
Ubuntu 6.10 Linux with OpenOffice: add $20
SuSE 10.2 Linux with OpenOffice: add $20
Fedora Core 6: add $20
No Operating System installed: subtract $

This is in support of Linux on Dell's. 1 Comment »

Larger Linux Call Center

Linux, Service and Support submitted by bradleydsmith 02/23/07

If Dell was to offer Linux pre-installed, I think they should offer support for Linux itself instead of passing the tickets to Ubuntu,RedHat or Novell. They could have a American based call center. By doing this Dell could make hardware vendors take notice and produce better drivers. If Dell is having trouble filling slots for Linux developers or techs they can call me, I would love to help them out:) 4 Comments »

Linux Wireless, Video Drivers

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux submitted by brokencrystal 02/23/07

Make the drivers for your wireless cards available for those of us who run Linux. I bought a Dell Inspiron 1501, but there are no Linux native drivers for it. I also have the ATI graphics Radeon Xpress 1150, but no Linux drivers available for it. It would be great if Linux drivers were available for all the hardware you make and sell. 4 Comments »

Linux compatibility assurance

Linux, Operating Systems submitted by moseby 02/20/07

The first major PC vendor that provides a product line and an online ordering system that allows me to shop and configure machines that are assured of having 100% support by linux wins my business.

I would expect some hardware to require vendor supplied binary drivers. I would want an indication of that fact and be given the choice of choosing that device or other hardware with community support.

Other ideas offered here that I resonate with are: 1) I don't need machines preloaded with any distro but may choose that option if offered, and 2) I don't need Dell support for the OS, that is what the community is for. 5 Comments »

Pre-Installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot

Linux, Operating Systems - Multiboot, Sales Strategies, Desktops and Laptops submitted by dhart 02/16/07 **PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED**

Offer the 3 top free Linux versions for free pre-installation on all Dell PCs.

Quality free and open source software drastically lowers the cost of new PCs, and helps prevent software piracy. For example OpenOffice.org, the Microsoft Office alternative, can shave hundreds of dollars off the price of a new PC. Cast your vote for OpenOffice and other free software.

Offer easy multi-boot options with Windows Vista, Windows XP, or NO Windows (yes, Linux can entirely replace Windows!)

Offer trade-ins and Linux CDs for older model Dell PCs. Cast your vote for the mini Linux Dell PC and the Universal Education Dell PC, both utilizing free software.

Would you try Linux if it were this easy?

CHOICE is what consumers want on their new PCs, not annoying surprise circus-ware (the typical smattering of confusing 3rd party popup-infested software found on most new Dell PCs). Quality free and open source software is well behaved, and may be legally pre-installed on PCs, and legally shared with friends and family, sharing is encouraged! Cast your vote for consumer CHOICE and public transparency at Dell.

Please take a look at www.dell.com/open for linux options on the Inspiron.

Remove: "Dell recommends Windows Vistaâ„¢..." from any publication

Advertising and Marketing submitted by tho.meier 02/21/07

It would be nice to see advertising without any Micro$oft, from Dell. I think there is enough advertising for MS from MS it self.

Somthing linke: "Dell supports muli-OS" would look good! Od: "Dell gives you the real choice" 61 Comments »

Why pay the Microsoft tax when u can get the same for a lot less?

Dell, Sales Strategies submitted by uomolinux 02/23/07

I'm now a Mac fan but still use a Windows laptop here at home and probably will use a PC for the rest of my life since I need a PC here and at the office, I'm a technician. I wok in a mental health, non profit organisation, witch rely heavily on old PC since we can't afford to pay the Microsoft tax.

Mos users use the computer for word processing and Internet(Firefox), software that can run easily on Linux. My point is that if our organization didn't had to pay the MS tax we could probably afford new computers witch is not the case right now since most desktop are still expensive due to the MS tax, witch probably account for 200$ to 300$ more with Office included, not much for rich corporation but way to expensive for US.

I know that Dell computers are great and not very expensive, but think about a computer without MS products(MS tax) they would be way more attractive for poorer corp or organizations, there is a market there just for Dell to grab if they consider offering alternative to the monopoly-money-hungry MS. 2 Comments »

Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware

Linux submitted by gergnz 02/19/07 **IN PROGRESS**

I don't care whether the OS is pre-installed or not, I want all the hardware to be totally supported in the Linux kernel without in mucking around. I currently have a Dell M1210 and I wish the modem would work, just in case I need it. The web cam would work, just in case I need it. At least the Intel wireless card is totally supported. Thanks Intel!!
Drivers are available for Linux to make some but not all hardware work. We continue to work with our partners to provide for better hardware support. See more specifics from john_h.

Stripped down, fast Linux Box

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Desktops, Linux submitted by pawprintz 02/17/07 **REVIEWED**

How about a fast, Internet ready Linux desktop. Small form factor, pretty monitor, mouse & keyboard, the O.S., OpenOffice & Firefox. Cheap'n'fast

Dell sees the value of this idea, and is keeping the sugestions for a Linux small form factor on the radar. john_h will let the community know of any new information as it comes.
