Make up Your Own PC & You Call the Shots!!

New Product Ideas, Sales Strategies submitted by worldcitizen9 03/06/07

When people buy a PC/Laptop they want the machine and an OS. If they want programs they can go and buy retail stuff as everyone has personal preferences and freedom of choice should be respected. Yet companies like Dell include retail software on their PC's/Laptops and charge for them. I can't ever remember when buying a PC that I was offered a choice of having or not having a paid version of Word Perfect or Microsoft Word????

Only include FREE programs like Open Office and Ubuntu and let people buy Microsoft XP or Vista or Microsoft Word if they want!!! If I buy a PC/Laptop all I really want is the hardware at the cheapest price I can get.

That's what has forced me to make my own PC's up. I buy the parts and get to CHOOSE the OS and software I want to put on it and NO 3rd party middle men. I have been able to build PC's that retail for $3,000 for a mere $1,400 because I bought the parts myself and no 3rd party software except what I wanted.

Sooner or later people are going to wake up and start making their own PC's and companies like Dell will be out of business because they are throwing in too much unwanted stuff and expecting us to sell our house and car to afford it all when we can get the same PC for a third the price if we don't buy from Dell but buy the parts ourselves & do the assembling or pay $50 to have it all assembled.

This must be of real concern for Dell and a wake up call that we only want the best hardware and to be charged ONLY for the hardware. Leave the software up to US to decide and pay for if we choose to. 1 Comment »

Linux for Home Users

Linux submitted by bridger987 03/06/07

I am very impressed by Dell's willingness to give open source a try, but have only seen business options such as Novell and Red Hat. It would be nice to see a home-user option.

An amazingly large number of people buy computers for very simple tasks such as checking email, browsing the web for information, and typing simple documents. None of these people want to pay up to US$400 for an operating system plus tons of pre-loaded trialware that they don't want or need.

For this market, I could see Ubuntu; or another simple, free operating system being perfect for what I call (not to be prejudiced) the "grandma" market. Not only is Ubuntu, Fedora, and the like simplified and easy to use, but it is not as susceptible to malware such as viruses, spyware, and adware. Noone likes adware on their computer (not even *cough* the pre-loaded kind.) A crisp, clean interface (like Ubuntu), no interferances like malware, and an overall ease-of-use could be a serious buying point for the "grandma" market.

Also, I second (or third, or fourth--you know what I mean) the idea of pre-installing programs such as Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, and OpenOffice.org software on Dell Home PCs for the same reasons.

Thanks for creating the site!

Think about it...

Total Dell Redesign

Desktops and Laptops submitted by pro2ghz 03/06/07

My wish is for Dell to redesign all the dell desktops and Notebooks

>Look at Dell, sure, the Dell has great hardware and software, but the bulky and angular desktops and notebooks

>>Thus to the way of success, I believe Dell should make a total design.

What about you?

(Give me some comments on your design) 1 Comment »

Linux Certified Hardware

Linux submitted by bart_simpson 03/06/07

Add a sticker labelled

"Linux Certified Hardware"

to any piece of hardware which is known to be compatible with Linux. Place the respective signs also in your store and make it a criterion to search for.

This idea is of mutual benefit: Many Linux users spend a great deal of time making sure that the hardware they want to buy is really compatible with Linux. If a user knows that the hardware will work, he is much more likely to prefer Dell to other vendors. 1 Comment »

Dell to please enter the MP3 again

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Sales Strategies submitted by lindleyj 03/06/07

I remember the dell DJ's, they were pretty descent but nothing compared to the zen, zune or ipods, with dell dominating new ideas in the gaming market for computers, im sure they can bring some fresh new ideas to the mp3 market, bring back new dell dj's with new designs, if they put their mind to it im sure they can out perform apple, microsoft and creative. 1 Comment »

Student Friendly Notebook

Laptops submitted by ttulaw 03/06/07

When using a notebook in class (most everyone here has a Dell), noise is a distraction.

1) Much quieter keyboard. Mac notebooks are noticeably quieter.

2) Quieter cooling fan.

3) Mute button should be a hardware switch, like the wireless switch. Comment »

When we mean Linux, we mean Open Source

Operating Systems submitted by nicopoon 03/06/07

It is great to see Dell listen to customers and it is quite interesting to see the amount of votes for Linux systems. On the other hand the idea of using SuSe Linux defeats the principles of open source and hurts the community given recent developments. Suse is becoming another version of Microsoft software and this is not what I am looking for in Linux. I would rather see Ubuntu or Fedora/Red Hat chosen as a result.

Linux on Dell

submitted by wdking 03/07/07

Instead of just certifying linux distributions on Dell hardware, Dell should develop their own distribution. That way hardware and software drivers will be sure to work. If people knew that the features most people use will work it would help increase the popularity of linux and the competition for the desktop will help everybody. 1 Comment »

Separate the Desktops and Notebooks category

IdeaStorm submitted by andrew.clarke 03/07/07 **IMPLEMENTED**

There can be a significant difference in the way notebooks are used versus desktops. For travellers, there could be many ideas specifc to laptops, but end up lost in the Desktop and Notebooks category. Mobile users might be another category option.
There are categories for 'desktops and laptops', just 'laptops' and just 'desktops'.

Make "Business" Parts available to Home Users

Sales Strategies submitted by thetavern 03/07/07

I want 10,000 and 15,000 rpm SCSI drives but I have tgo go to 'business computers' to find them. Same thing with video cards. The 2 divisions have different parts. Why nott consolidate and make your best parts available to all? I should be able to buy any drive , video card or DVD you carry in any division. It might also allow you to streamline your operation and actually order as wider selection with fewer total types of parts on hand that you need to support for years. 2 Comments »

OpenOffice.org and Linux Availability

Linux, Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by chemikalguy 03/07/07

I think that Dell is on the right track, especially with all the problems/issues that WinVista is having. I think supplying OpenOffice would be a fantastic replacement for Works, which is used very infrequently, due to it's incompatibility with MS Office file formats. Most people I know uninstall it from their new PCs the first day they're out of the box, and end up purchasing, or unfortunately pirating, MS Office, simply because everything is required to be in .doc format when sending documents around. OpenOffice does have it's issues as well, but I think they are minor, and with a 'heavy-hitter' like Dell behind the project, they'd be taken care of rather quickly.

As far as Linux goes, I try to suggest to my users (I'm the sole systems administrator for my company), that they try it, even providing them with live cds to make it easy, and not have to install it to try it. Most people are afraid because they don't know anything about it. It's fear of the unknown, plain and simple. If Dell could provide it, preinstalled, even in a dual-boot configuration for a while with the standard windows installation, more people would be willing to try it. The biggest thing that would help, would be if Dell would provide a small amount of time-based support, either in hours or by calendar months. For example, provide ten hours of free phone support for the Linux distribution, or one month of free telephone support, or something like that. That way, people would be encouraged to try it, knowing that there's someone a phone call away to help them when/if they run into trouble, or just need someone to hold their hand while they set up their email. Integral DSL/Cable Modem, Integral Router

Broadband and Mobility, Desktops and Laptops submitted by zafo 03/07/07

I would love the get the router and broadband modem off the top of my computer. Can you make internal modems and router ordering options? We've had internal dial-up/FAX modems forever. 1 Comment »

Computer supporting IBM Cell Multiprocessor and Linux

Accessories (Keyboards, etc.), Linux, Desktops and Laptops submitted by zafo 03/07/07

The IBM Cell device has eight processing engines and a controller in a single core. There is a version of Linux that supports it. This would be a fantastic offering for power users in academic, defense and research, as well as the serious computer geek. Two Cells would be even better! 2 Comments »

commercial linux and star office

Linux, Software submitted by bamorrow 03/07/07

I would like to see Dell offer the big name Linux system fully installed and tested on lower end desktop and notebooks. For me this would be SUSE Enterprise 10 or Redhat Enterprise 4 (5). For me this would give a large solid firm to deal with instead of smaller "3rd" party vendors we have to deal with now.

I would also like to see alternatives like Star Office offered with the system. The support and usability of Openoffice but with commercial support.

These would certainly help in cutting down our procurement paper and time, plus cut out roll out expenses and time. Comment »

Support Linux! We don't want Microsoft anymore!

Advertising and Marketing, Linux submitted by warnerms 03/07/07

I wonder about Dells market research. They would do much better with their advertising budget, for a lot of us, if they actually offered what we want. I no longer use Microsoft products, but I still get plenty of advertising in the mail for Dell products that offer no choice of operating systems. Microsoft has disappointed too many times in the past, so I switched to Linux and have been very pleased with the results. If Dell can not provide a choice of operating systems (when viable options exist), then all their money spent on advertising to our household, is just a waste of paper.
What I wanted when shopping for a laptop. A Linux laptop where all hardware is fully supported. Ubunto, would be nice. What I bought: A laptop from another vendor where all hardware was supported under Linux. Yes I ended up paying a bit more, but I was free of the folks in Redmond :) Comment »

Software Installed on New PCs

Sales Strategies, Software, Desktops and Laptops submitted by ahukle 03/07/07

I am a long-time Dell user and I have other brands of PCs I have used over the years. My biggest complaint about buying a new PC is all the junk software that comes pre-installed. I spend hours removing and reformatting to get the machine I want. What I would like to be able to do is order a new PC with just the software I want installed and not have to spend hours getting rid of all the free trials of this and that.

Let me order the machine configured for my personal use and skip all the bloatware that is the biggest turnoff from ordering a new PC. Comment »

Finding the correct link to solve issues is a mess ( Lousy ) - Fix it !

Dell Web Site submitted by sr45 03/07/07

To locate assistance using Dells online site for an number of topics, whether its on a Warranty, Return to Dell, Customer support, Tech support, and so on is a time consuming mess. It takes a while to find the correct area to solve the individuals question.

Why don't you have only one very large page, listing all the subject matters, that a customer can find the correct topic to click on, instead of going through one menu after another, clicking one link after another to find the correct location on the subject he/she is trying to locate. We don't need differnent pages to click on, one is enough, than find the topic, and click on it.

One page is large enough to include all that the customer needs to find the proper site. You make it too difficult to find things. Comment »
